Just an amazing dominance by the Helena squad over Missoula this series -- it's now 14-3 H-Crew, having scored in every inning (they're in the 6th). Angel Salome just collected his 4th base hit tonight, a double, and has eight RBI in the three games. DFE Darren Ford is as exciting as advertised, and has reached base in all five plate appearances thus far (four hits, one BB). Huge nights (again) for the middle infield combo of Kenny Holmberg and Ryan Crew -- all four players mentioned in this thread hitting .500 or better this week. Wow...

We'll kick off the player features thread on the baby Brewers with this commentary on 3rd round RHP Will Inman, written shortly prior to his signing: Fresh, brash and so talented Commentary by Aaron McFarling, Roanoke.com DRY FORK - He spits on the dugout floor and looks up from behind a low-brimmed cap. The most exciting high school player around is trying to explain what really gets him going. His mind drifts ... then he snaps to attention. "Oh, this is the one I love hearing," Will Inman says. "I love hearing the leadoff batter strike out and then go back to the dugout yelling, 'He's not throwing that hard! He's not throwing that hard!' "Yeah, I love that one. That's always a great one." Change your plans this morning. Skip work, skip class, find a baby sitter, do whatever you've got to do. Get down to Calfee Park in Pulaski and watch Tunstall senior Will Inman play at 11 a.m. in the state baseball semifinals. You won't be sorry. Oh, you might get annoyed a time or two by something Inman does. You might even walk away thinking that sportsmanship's gone completely to pot, that the Milwaukee Brewers just drafted - and offered a half-million dollars to - a total madman. But trust me on this: You'll be thoroughly entertained. Inman knows he has plenty of critics. Maybe they don't like the way he pumps his fist after the 92 mph fastball cracks the mitt, or the way he shouts to the sky when the curve ball breaks just right, or the way his home run trot seems to take a little longer when it stings the opponent the most. But these people need to get over it. The fact is, nobody plays the game harder. Nobody. The 18-year-old right-hander is everything that's great about these high school playoffs - high talent, higher emotion - and if it rubs somebody the wrong way, too bad. "Oh, God, yeah, dude," Inman says, when asked if he caught any flak after last year's state championship game against Cave Spring when he struck out 12, smacked a three-run homer and held none of his cocksure antics back in a 4-0 Tunstall win. "Random people saw me and would get on me. About yelling! After getting a big strikeout or something, yelling and a fist pump." He shakes his head. "I want to see these people pitch in the World Series," he says of his critics. "Do they not watch baseball on T.V.? Do they not see Josh Beckett out there chunckin' it? Roger Clemens? Randy Johnson, dude, this guy used to just chew down some hitters, man. They'd outweigh him by maybe 30 or 40 pounds, and he'd just chew them down. Man, you can't be scared. "I don't care what people think of me on the field," he says. "Because if you don't know me off the field, you have no right to make a decision on me." His pulse is quickening now, his voice rising. He's getting into his competitive mode, the one that has made him the all-time strikeout leader in the state of Virginia with 585, the one that sometimes has his coach on the defensive. "I've had other coaches and umpires say, 'Coach, you need to tone him down,'" Tunstall coach Barry Shelton says. "But as a coach, it's hard to do that when that's his makeup. If you take away his makeup, you take away some of the edge that he has out there. That's what makes him go." And go he has. A 41-3 career record, a 0.68 career ERA, 29 career home runs, a school-record 26 doubles. Of course, having a fastball that consistently hovers above 90 mph doesn't hurt either. But it's the total competitive package that convinced Auburn University to offer him a scholarship, an offer he will decline after the Brewers selected him in the third round this week and ponied up the $500,000 signing bonus Inman was seeking. "I'm not a big spender," Inman says, explaining that he plans to save the money. "The necessities keep me very comfortable. I don't like having anything nice because I always screw it up." This is the other side of Inman, the side his teammates know, the modest kid who grew up just outside Danville and was surprised that he developed into a prospect. He's only flown once - for his official visit to Auburn - and says he's rarely left Dry Fork. "I guess I never really compared myself with the rest of the world," says Inman, who struck out the first 11 batters he faced in his freshman debut. "I didn't know what else was out there." He knows now - a new challenge. And as soon as this state title run is over (Inman will likely DH today and pitch Saturday in the finals if Tunstall makes it), he'll sign with the Brewers, take a week's vacation and then fly to Arizona to begin his pro career. Critics are welcome to follow if they wish. "I'll be more intense there, man," he says of the next level. "Because I know that I won't be facing Billy Joe that just came up from ninth grade. I'm going to be facing damn men that got 30-year-old beards and may be popping steroids." See? Always entertaining. Don't miss it.

And the follow-up column from May -- notice the mention of former Brewer farmhand Ralph Santana: Supplemental issue New Goldeye pleads ignorance on failed drug test By PAUL FRIESEN -- Winnipeg Sun There's nothing quite like the first day of spring training: the smell of the grass, the sound of popping leather, the crack of the bat -- and talk of steroids, of course. That's right, sports fans, the controversy that continues to swirl around Major League Baseball has found its way to your neighbourhood independent league team. The Winnipeg Goldeyes are counting on a 23-year-old, Dominican right-hander by the name of Darwin Soto to be their ace out of the bullpen this year. Only problem is, Soto failed a drug test before being cut by the Seattle Mariners organization, and the Northern League has suspended him for the first seven games of the season. ROCKED THE GOLDEYES News of Soto's positive test rocked the Goldeyes last month, and the organization continued to have trouble dealing with the matter on the first day of practice yesterday. Originally, GM Andrew Collier and manager Hal Lanier, who's said there is no room for steroid users in his clubhouse, decided the media would not be allowed to talk to Soto. Not a good idea. You see, everybody has had their say in this matter except for Soto himself. We needed to hear his side of the story. But the Goldeyes clearly wanted to sweep the whole thing under the rug. According to Lanier, Soto was only going to offer a string of "no comments" anyway, as instructed by his agent. Again, bad idea. There's no better way to keep a controversy alive than by not dealing with it. After some pressure from the media, the Goldeyes relented. It turned out Soto had a lot more to say than anticipated. Did he clear his name? That's for you to decide. Speaking through an interpreter -- teammate Ralph Santana, fluent in both English and Spanish -- Soto said he was surprised he failed the drug test. "I didn't really know what I was using," Soto said. "I was taking stuff ... and when I found out, I was shocked. "I was using some antibiotics and something like that, that people were telling me to take. When I found out I was using stuff I couldn't use, there was nothing I could do about it." Asked about the antibiotics and who told him to take them, Soto said it was actually supplements that he'd been using for some time. "It was a packet of supplements," he said. "Protein, vitamins and shakes. I was using it last year, and nothing came of it." Later, while thanking the Goldeyes for not dumping him, Soto, through Santana, used the term, "steroids." "I was disappointed, (thinking), 'Well, now that I'm caught with steroids, Winnipeg's not going to keep me.' I appreciated so much that they did keep me." That's when Lanier jumped in, reminding everybody the minor league drug policy is stricter than the one used in the majors. "The minor leagues test for probably six or seven things," Lanier said. "You could be taking Sudafed for a cold and it could show up positive. What we want to do here in Winnipeg is put all this behind us." Fair enough. PLEADED IGNORANCE However, given one last chance to name the substance he tested positive for, Soto pleaded ignorance. "They never told me," he said. "They just gave me a letter. I sent it to my agent. I was taking just regular supplements, just like everybody else was." There's one problem with that. Players are told what substance they test positive for. We don't want to be too hard on Soto. It could well be something was lost in the translation yesterday. So we'll take him at his word. Presumably, he's learned his lesson. Under orders from the N.L., the Goldeyes will test Soto at least three times this season to make sure. Hopefully, the Goldeyes have learned something, too. That is, the steroid issue is probably here to stay. Trying to sweep it under the carpet is pointless.

From poster jackalope02ca: We just bought Darwin Soto from the Winnipeg Goldeyes of the Northern League. Anyone know where he is going. He has been totally dominant since he finished serving his suspension for steroids he carried over from the Seattle organization. Goldeyes site: Darwin Soto is on his way back to organized baseball. Following a month of outstanding relief for the Goldeyes, Soto's contract was picked up today by the Milwaukee Brewers, who have assigned him to their Florida State (High A) League club in Brevard County. Winnipeg's closer, Soto was 1-0 with a 1.26 earned run average and five saves in 10 appearances. He struck out 18 and walked just three in 14-plus innings while holding opponents to just a .082 average. Soto came to the Goldeyes following a year in the Seattle system and five years before that in the San Diego system. His contract is the first sold this season by the Goldeyes to a Major League organization and the 39th in franchise history. He is also the first Winnipeg player to be picked up by Milwaukee. Well, Rickie Weeks was the obvious choice until recently, but you know what, Trent has played well... Link while active, text follows: www.nashvillesounds.com/n...ewsId=1648 Infielder Trent Durrington has been named to the Pacific Coast League All-Star team and will represent the Sounds on the 28-man squad that takes on the International League stars in the 2005 Triple-A All-Star Game on Wednesday, July 13 at Raley Field in Sacramento, California. He was selected to the team as a reserve by the PCL office. Durrington, 29, is batting .290 (65-for-224) with four home runs and 24 RBIs in a team-high 70 games for Nashville this season. The speedy infielder has started games at six different positions for Nashville (1B, 2B, SS, 3B, LF, RF), currently ranks third among Pacific Coast League batters with 20 stolen bases, and is tied for fourth among all minor league hitters with a league-leading 11 sacrifice bunts. In addition, the Broadbeach Waters, Australia native currently leads the Sounds with 44 runs scored and is third on the club with 35 walks. Durrington ? who is in his second season with the Milwaukee Brewers organization after opening his career with an 11-year stint in the Angels chain ? is currently riding a 14-game hitting streak, which matches the longest by a Sounds player this season (previously accomplished by Kevin Orie). Durrington is batting .351 (20-for-57) over that 14-game stretch. The All-Star nod is the first selection of Durrington?s 13-year pro career. Durrington is the first Nashville position player to garner a mid-season All-Star bid since infielder Mendy Lopez during the 2002 campaign. Current Pittsburgh Pirates starting pitcher Dave Williams represented the Sounds in last season?s All-Star Game and Mark Corey, the Sounds? all-time saves leader, participated in the 2003 contest. Nashville is one of six PCL clubs with one player named to the squad. Memphis (AAA-Cardinals) and Tucson (AAA-Diamondbacks) each had three players selected to lead the circuit. The 2005 Triple-A All-Star Game will be broadcast on television on ESPN2 as well as on the radio on WAMB 98.7 FM & 1160 AM at 9:00 p.m. CDT. Three former Sounds players have been selected to participate in the contest: Omaha outfielder Adrian Brown (Sound in 1998-2000, ?02), Indianapolis relief pitcher Mark Corey (2003-04), and Memphis starting pitcher Kevin Jarvis (2004).

Link Report for Games of Wednesday, June 22nd
Jim Goulart replied to Jim Goulart's topic in Brewers Minor League Talk
Final: Helena 9, Missoula (Diamondbacks) 8, ten innings O's drop 2nd straight game to Brewers By MICHAEL HEINBACH of the Missoulian        For a brief moment it seemed the Missoula Osprey just might pull off their first win of the young Pioneer League season during Wednesday night's three-hour, 39-minute epic. Instead, the O's fell for the second times in as many games. It took 10 innings at Play Ball Park, but the Helena Brewers thwarted a final Osprey threat and beat the home team 9-8 before 1,879 fans. The loss dropped the Osprey to 0-2, but Missoula manager Hector De La Cruz saw improvement in his club's performance following a 16-3 drubbing at hands of the same Helena squad on opening night. "Yeah, yeah. It was definitely a much better effort from last night," De La Cruz said. "They're coming around. I liked what I saw from them tonight and they will get their wins." Missoula dug itself a hole early and it appeared Helena might echo its performance of Tuesday. The Brewers got to Missoula starter Derik Nippert for two runs in the top of the first, one each in the second and third frames and two more in the fourth to take a 6-1 lead. "We got a little shaky in the beginning from our starter," De La Cruz said. "After that he settled down and the relievers mostly did a good job." In fact Nippert (0-1) started getting ahead of hitters as early as the second inning. Despite allowing runs, Nippert tossed first-pitch strikes to 12 consecutive batters, a good sign he was gaining control. A two-out, two-run home run by Helena designated hitter Angel Salome - his second of the season - staked the Brewers to a 6-1 lead after three innings. Helena first baseman John Alonso led the Brewers offense, going 4-for-4 with two RBIs. But Missoula showed signs of life in the bottom of the fourth when first baseman Osvaldo Diaz leadoff with an single and was driven in by Rusty Ryal's double. Ryal, a 14th-round selection in this year's draft from Oklahoma State, came home on a fielder's choice, cutting Missoula's deficit to 6-3. Trailing 7-5, the Osprey took their first lead of the season with a three-run burst in the bottom of the seventh. Three straight singles by Jayson Santiago, Pedro Ciriaco and Jo Jo Batten put Missoula ahead. But the Brewers scored one in the eighth on a two-base error by Missoula pitcher Vince Davis to tie it 8-8. With men on first and second, Davis relieved Vince Bongiovanni. Before he threw a single pitch, Davis attempted to pick Michael Bell off first. But his throw sailed past first and into foul territory in right field, allowing Darren Ford to score the tying run. With the Osprey bullpen depleted, De La Cruz was forced to use Davis the rest of the way. It stood knotted at eight until the 10th, when Brewers second baseman Ryan Crew began the frame with a triple. He came around on Ford's single, which eventually pinned the loss on Davis (0-1). Davis, in his second year in Missoula, threw 3 1-3 innings, allowing just the two 10th-inning hits with a walk and five strikeouts. Despite the blemish on his record, Davis was easily the most effective of the O's four pitchers on the evening. Missoula made one last charge in the bottom of the tenth. But after his one-out double, Ryal, who finished 3-for-6, was left stranded at second. "These guys have a great attitude and they're starting to play together as a team," De La Cruz said. "They're excited to play together and they're going to play out this thing. They're all doing a good job. After the game we played last night and the way they played today... that's got to tell you something." Helena Box Score: Not a bad 2nd pro game for 12 round juco first baseman John Alonso; both Alonso and Ryan Crew just one hit shy of a cycle; Angel Salome draws two walks in addition to his HR; you?ll always have errors in rookie ball ? 3B Matt Gamel commits two in his debut; the pitching star is the 2004 undrafted free agent, Richard Breshears? Final: Vero Beach (Dodgers) 5, Brevard County 3 Brevard County Site Game Summary: DODGERS TAKE SECOND HALF OPENER VIERA, FL ? As the second half of the season kicked off, the Manatees were unable to start off in the right foot as the Vero Beach Dodgers took game one 5-3 Wednesday night at Space Coast Stadium. The Dodgers started off early against reigning FSL pitcher of the week Josh Habel as they tagged him for three runs in the third inning. After an initial fly-out, the next four batters would reach base on Habel. A double, a single, a throwing error and another single would produce two of the three third-inning runs. The third scored on a sacrifice fly before the inning would be put to rest on a fly-out. But the Manatees would not let the game get out of reach. They tabbed starter Julio Pimentel for a run in the bottom of the frame to keep the score at 3-1. As proof that lead-off walks will kill a team, Ben Diggins started off the bottom of the inning with a walk and would advance to third on a wild pitch and a groundout. Ozzie Chavez would bring Diggins in with an infield single to second before Drew Anderson would ground out to end the inning. Vero would answer back with a run of their own in the top of the fourth before the Manatees would get their final two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Jeff Eure led off the inning and was immediately hit by a pitch to put him on first. Steve Sollmann and Travis Ezi would score Eure on back-to-back singles to cut it to a 4-2 game. A ground ball to right by Anderson would bring in Sollmann and give the ?Tees their final run. Ezi ended the inning in a run down after Anderson was nearly picked off of first. Brevard was sat down on back-to-back-to-back 1-2-3 innings by Dodger fireballer Hong-Chih Kuo before turning the game over to reliever Mark Alexander to pick up his tenth save. The Manatees take their game on the road for a six-game road trip splitting between Palm Beach and Jupiter for three games apiece. All-Star Carlos Villanueva takes the mound on Thursday for BC as he goes up against Jose Garcia for the Cardinals. www.starsboxscore.com/ Another day for DanaWith a rotation lacking in depth, it's good to see Dana Eveland's turn come around again, and Wednesday, he didn't disappoint at all........ Eveland and Mitch Stetter, who had not allowed a hit in his last seven innings of relief, combined on the Stars' first shutout since April 19, when by coincidence, the Stars blanked Mobile behind Dennis Sarfate, who pitches Thursday against the pitcher he beat that day, Mike Thompson....... Eveland did not allow a hit until the 4th inning, and two hits in all, in winning his 5th straight game, all of which have stopped losing streaks, and his 8th of the season, which was Ryan Costello's team-leading total last year........ Eveland has allowed just 17 hits, 16 of them singles, in 33 innings in those five games, striking out 23, walking 10, and boasting a 1.09 ERA....... Will Dana win 10 for the Stars, or will Nashville, frothing at the mouth to get his services to add to a staff that has a 4.60 ERA, 5th in the PCL?........ Hopefully, the Stars will hang on to him as long as he can, but it seems Dana has little left to prove here........ In beating Mobile, he becomes the first pitcher since Derek Lee, in April 2003, to win four games in a month. With his regular rest, he'll have one more start -- on June 28 vs. Jacksonville -- in which to win his 5th, something no one has done since Brett Laxton in 1998. Vinny Rottino provided the first run for the Stars, a two-out solo HR in the opening inning..... It was the 3rd this year off Brian Whitaker, a frequent whipping boy for our side. This was Whitaker's 9th start against Huntsville and going back to last year, he's 1-6 with a 4.81 ERA and two no-decision games, one of them against Eveland on April 18........ In the 4th, Enrique Cruz scored after leading off with a line-drive triple to center, coming home when Ronnie Merrill couldn't handle Jeff Winchester's sharply hit ground ball. Stetter came on in the 7th, but for a pitcher who had not allowed a run in his last five appearances, it became an unexpected nail-biter........ With one out in the 7th, Stetter loaded the bases on a pair of singles and a walk to Casey Baker, but Mike Richardson, pinch-hitting for former Brewer farmhand Craig Breslow, hit a one-hop liner on a 2-and-0 pitch right to Enrique Cruz, who shoveled to Callix Crabbe, who completed the game-saving double play....... The 8th inning was quiet for Stetter, who got three fly outs in facing four hitters, but the 9th was cardiac time again........ After getting Corey Smith to ground out back to the box and striking out Baker, he hit catcher Luke Carlin in the back of the left foot on a 1-2 pitch. Casey Baker then hit a 2-1 pitch to Rottino, who threw high over the head of Brandon Gemoll, bouncing off the wall, and caroming to right field, allowing Carlin to advance to third........ With runners on 2nd and 3rd, Gary Jones sent pitcher Mike Thompson, 2-for-17, to pinch-hit....... Interesting move...... But Thompson bounced a a 1-1 pitch back to Stetter, who barehanded the ball, carrying his momentum to the bag, where he made the putout at first himself........ That earned Stetter his 6th save, passing Matt DeWitt for the club lead. Kennard Bibbs snapped an 0-for-10 slump with a single to right in the 3rd inning........ Nelson Cruz saw his hitting streak snapped at 12 games, a season-high, but Enrique stretched his to seven with a single in the 2nd. He's 10-for-27 (.370) in that stretch....... Gemoll lifted his average to a season-high .247........ Ben Van Iderstine did not start, but in the # 7 hole this year, he's 11-for-21....... Winchester is 3-for-24 in his last eight games......... For those who didn't hear this game on the radio, Brett Pollock had pitcher Alec Zumwalt as his guest late in the game, and it was a true treat. Happy to say Derek Lee, a fan favorite in Huntsville for five years until he signed with the Blue Jays as a free agent after the 2003 season, then spent most of 2004 on the disabled list, is back in professional baseball..... He has been signed by the Texas Rangers and assigned to Class AAA - Oklahoma. More from David Weiser: www.starsboxscore.com/standing.html -

Nashville Pre-Game Audio with Infielder Tony Zuniga: www.nashvillesounds.com/a...206-22.mp3 Final: Albuquerque (Marlins) 3, Nashville 2 Nashville Site Game Summary: Sounds Lose In Bottom Of The Ninth, 3-2ALBUQUERQUE ? Mark Little drove a run-scoring triple off the glove of Sounds third baseman Chris Barnwell in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Albuquerque Isotopes a 3-2 win over Nashville on Wednesday evening at Isotopes Park in the second game of a four-game series. With the loss, Nashville (39-35) saw its lead in the PCL American Conference Northern Division reduced to 2 ½ games following an afternoon victory by second-place Memphis. The defeat was the Sounds? fifth in an opponent?s last at-bat this season. Josh Wilson opened the Albuquerque ninth with a bloop single to center off Jeff Bennett, the infielder?s first hit in 29 at-bats against Sounds pitching this season. After the Nashville reliever fanned Isotopes pitcher Ben Howard, Little delivered his game-winning knock to score Wilson. The Sounds jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead with a pair of runs against Albuquerque starter Jeff Fulchino in the top of the first inning. Dave Krynzel led off with a single and stole his tenth base of the season. Trent Durrington followed with an RBI single to put the Sounds on the board and extend his hitting streak to 14 games, matching the longest by a Nashville player this season. Three batters later, Brad Nelson plated Durrington with an RBI groundout. The Isotopes placed runners in scoring position against Nashville starter Rick Helling in four of the first five innings but failed to score. Krynzel nixed an Albuquerque scoring opportunity in the bottom of the fourth, throwing out former Sound Jason Wood at the plate as he attempted to score on Derek Wathan?s fly ball. Audio Clip, Krynzel?s Throw To The Plate: www.nashvillesounds.com/a...206-22.mp3 Albuquerque finally broke through against Helling in the sixth, tying the contest with two runs. The Isotopes loaded the bases with none out. Todd Sears and Wood singled, then Josh Willingham was hit by a pitch. Matt Padgett put the home team on the board with an RBI single to right. After Helling retired Wathan on a shallow fly to left, Wilson tied the affair with a sacrifice fly that scored Wood. Howard (2-2) hurled three scoreless frames to earn the victory for Albuquerque, while Bennett (1-1) suffered his first loss of the season after surrendering the game-winner in the ninth. Helling took a no-decision despite tossing his team-leading seventh quality start for Nashville, all coming in his last nine outings. The veteran allowed two runs on seven hits over seven frames. The teams continue the series with an 8:05 p.m. CT contest on Thursday evening. Right-hander Justin Lehr (6-6, 4.95) takes the hill for Nashville to face Isotopes right-hander Peter Bauer (3-4, 6.44).
