Link while active, text follows: www.dailymail.com/news/Sp...005061411/ Iribarren benefits from 'gift of good legs' Matt Lockhart Charleston Daily Mail Sportswriter Your dad would've liked Hernan Iribarren. His dad would've liked Hernan Iribarren. And his buddies would've toasted a drink for the West Virginia Power second baseman. He's a throwback. "Run fast," Iribarren says. "Once you see the ball, keep running fast. That's the key, man. Keep running fast." He's explaining the triple, a not-so-common feat in what's becoming known as the steroid era in baseball. So, what's better, a homer or a triple? "I love triples," said Iribarren. "I'm a line drive hitter, so I like triples more than home runs." His Power teammates are toasting to that. Iribarren's eighth-inning RBI triple scored the go-ahead run in the Power's 10-8 win over Lakewood on Monday night at Appalachian Power Park. His game-turning hit not only tied Iribarren with teammate Alcides Escobar for the South Atlantic League lead in triples (6), it also gave the Power (24-41) its longest win streak -- four games -- of the season. "The kids are playing great baseball," Power Manager Ramon Aviles said. "Even when we're behind, we feel like we can come back. We have a lot of confidence, and we're getting some big hits." West Virginia trailed until Iribarren ripped one down the right field line to score Escobar. Utility man Will Lewis knocked in Iribarren from third to set the final at 10-8. "They've got good speed," Aviles said of Iribarren and Escobar, who both are top-10 in the minor leagues in triples. "They know how to run the bases. They turn singles into doubles, and doubles into triples. Those are gifts from the good Lord. A gift of good legs." Sure, there are some who wonder about Iribarren. They ponder whether he'll project as a singles hitter in the Majors, or if the 20-year-old will develop more power over time. There's no question about his bat. In two minor league seasons, Iribarren is batting .371 (183-for-493) with 20 triples, 22 doubles and seven homers. Scouts are impressed about how well he covers the plate. Word of mouth suggests Iribarren even held his own against Milwaukee's big league ace Ben Sheets in spring training. One thing is for sure, he's no longer the guy who struggled to a .240 April batting average when the Power looked destined to finish last in the SAL Northern Division. Now, two clubs have worse records and Iribarren is a SAL All-Star. "Sometimes you have bad moments," said Iribarren, who is hitting .316 after posting a .351 average in May. "We need to keep our head up and keep working." In a way, that's what Iribarren does when he hits the ball. Instead of admiring its distance, he focuses on that extra base. So, on a night when both teams wore Sally League throwback jerseys, Iribarren stood out. He's the one that's old school. POWER PLUGS: South Atlantic League throwbacks were in style Monday, as both teams dressed in various past uniforms from around the league. Lakewood starter Maximo De La Cruz wore a Charleston Wheelers jersey ... Front row heckler Rod Blackstone got shown up in the game's first inning after calling Lakewood first baseman Doug Gredvig "Mr. Big Stuff." Gredvig hit a solo homer off the Kyle building behind the wall in left field, and pointed at Blackstone after he rounded the bases ... Power Starter Brian Montalbo was yanked after just 1 1/3 innings. He had given up three earned runs and thrown 45 pitches before being pulled in what would become a tie for the shortest outing by a Power starting pitcher this season. Josh Baker went 1 1/3 in a May 3 start ... The Power will look for a sweep Tuesday night when the teams wrap up a five-game series. Contact sportswriter Matt Lockhart at mattlockhart@dailymail.com -

Link while active, text follows: www.wvgazette.com/section...2005061331 Power rallies to win 10-8 By Jim Workman For The Charleston Gazette Three might be a charm, but winning four in a row sounds better. The West Virginia Power defeated Lakewood 10-8 in a South Atlantic League contest at Appalachian Power Park on Monday night before 3,264 fans. The Power has won four games in a row, its longest win streak of the season. ?It?s great,? said Power manager Ramon Aviles. ?The kids are playing with a lot of confidence right now. Even when we?re behind, we believe that we can come back. We?re taking advantage of the mistakes the opposition makes, and we have guys coming through big in the clutch with hits.? The victory was accomplished in come-from-behind fashion with Hernan Iribarren swatting an RBI triple down the right-field line to score Alcides Escobar in the eighth to break an 8-8 tie. The Power knotted it at 8 in the bottom of the seventh, thanks to a bases-loaded sacrifice fly to center by Josh Brady and an error by Blueclaws second baseman Brad Harman that allowed Will Lewis to score. That set up Iribarren?s eighth-inning heroics. Lewis added an insurance run with a RBI single. The BlueClaws started fast, clubbing two home runs in the top of the first inning. Sam Orr smashed a two-run shot over the right-field fence, and Doug Gredvig followed with a solo blast that sailed over the left-field wall to give Lakewood an early 3-0 advantage. The Power scored its first run when Lakewood catcher Jason Jaramillo allowed a passed ball and picked it up and threw it into center field, scoring Lewis to cut the BlueClaws? lead to 3-1. Mike Dzurilla gave Lakewood a 4-1 advantage with a RBI single in the second, scoring Sean Gamble. Power first baseman Grant Richardson cut into the lead, making it 4-3 with a monster home run that flew over the ad signs on the left side of the scoreboard in left-center field. In the third, Jesus Merchan and Greg Golson hit back-to-back RBI doubles ? both into the leftfield corner ? and Gamble singled home Golson to raise the BlueClaws? lead to 7-3. The Power got three runs back in the bottom of the fifth. Brady hit a scorcher to right-center field that bounced in and out of the glove of center fielder Golson as Brady reached second, and Lewis and Corporan scored to trim the BlueClaws? advantage to 7-5. Tony Festa followed with a RBI single to score Brady and make it 7-6. Golson reached on an error in the seventh, with Chris Klemm crossing the plate on the play to boost the Lakewood margin to 8-6. Justin Barnes (3-1) got the win in relief for the Power. Cory Dueitt (0-2) was tagged with the loss. Ben Stanczyk pitched the ninth to claim the save, his third. POWER POINTS: Both teams celebrated ?Turn Back the Clock Night? by dressing in retro-uniforms representing ex-South Atlantic League teams such as the Macon Braves, Shelby Rebels, Fayetteville Generals, Columbus Foxes, Augusta Pirates and Greensboro Hornets. Lakewood starting pitcher Maximo Delacruz sported a Charleston Wheelers uniform. ... The BlueClaws (21-44), a Phillies affiliate, occupy last place in the South Atlantic League Northern Division. ... The Power (24-41) will wrap up its eight-game home stand tonight against Lakewood. West Virginia will begin a tough eight-game road trip at Hagerstown on Thursday. After four games with the Suns, it?s off to nemesis Lexington for four. ... ?We?re going to play Hagerstown [and Lexington], who?s fighting for first place in our division,? said Aviles. ?We?d like to have a say in who wins it. We tried hard against Lexington, and we?ll go to Hagerstown and play hard like we always do.? -

Final: West Tenn (Cubs) 4, Huntsville 2 Huntsville Site Game Summary: Casey McGehee and Rich Lewis homered to back the pitching of Carmen Pignatiello in West Tenn?s 4-2 win over Huntsville Monday night in the opening game of a three-game series at Joe Davis Stadium. The Diamond Jaxx improved to 41-21 and moved into sole possession of first place in the North Division, one game ahead of Carolina, which fell to Jacksonville 7-1. The Stars saw their three-game win streak snapped and dropped to 26-38 on the season and 15-16 at home. Felix Pie scored the first run of the night in the first inning when he singled to right field on the game?s first pitch, advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Adam Greenberg on the second pitch of the game, moved to third on a Matt Murton ground out on the third pitch and scored on a Glenn Woolard wild pitch with Buck Coats at the plate. Murton singled with two outs in the third and McGehee followed with a home run to left field, his fourth of the year, to put the visitors on top 3-0. Rich Lewis, the 2004 Southern League MVP, led off the fourth inning with a home run, his first since rejoining the Jaxx, to increase the lead to 4-0. It marked the second time Woolard had yielded a pair of long balls in a game, the other coming in a 7-2 win over Tennessee on May 1 at ?the Joe.? Pignatiello retired the first 11 hitters he faced before Nelson Cruz singled in the fourth. The Stars loaded the bases in the sixth and did not score and knocked Pignatiello out in the seventh after loading the bases with one out. Pinch-hitter John Vanden Berg greeted David Aardsma with a single to left to drive in Ben Van Iderstine with the home team?s first run but the inning was short-circuited when Tony Gywnn, Jr. flied out to Murton in left and he threw out Enrique Cruz at the plate trying to score. Aardsma yielded a leadoff double in the eighth to Vinny Rottino but the Stars were unable to advance him and entered the ninth down by three. Talley Haines took over on the hill for the Jaxx in the ninth and yielded a two-out, run-scoring single to Gwynn and then fanned Rottino with two runners on to end the game to earn his 12th save. The series continues Tuesday night with left-hander Ryan Costello pitching for the Stars against West Tenn southpaw Renyel Pinto. Coverage of the game gets underway at 6:50 p.m. central time on ESPN 1450 AM and via the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com. Pre-Game Audio Chat with infielder Matt Erickson: www.nashvillesounds.com/a...206-13.mp3 Final: Albuquerque (Marlins) 3, Nashville 2 Nashville Site Game Summary: NASHVILLE ? The Nashville Sounds opened their eight-game homestand on the short end of a 3-2 decision against the Albuquerque Isotopes on Monday evening at Greer Stadium. With the loss, Nashville (33-32) falls to 1 ½ games behind Memphis in the PCL American Conference Northern Division. Chris Aguila put the visitors on the board early, slugging a one-out solo homer to left off Sounds starter Justin Lehr to give Albuquerque a 1-0 lead. Corey Hart tied the contest at 1-1 in the fourth when he followed Trent Durrington?s leadoff bunt single with an RBI double into the left field corner, his team-leading 15th two-bagger of the season. Hart continued his recent hot hitting with a 2-for-4 night at the plate and is batting .400 (26-for-65) over his last 16 games. Nashville centerfielder Dave Krynzel dropped a two-out fly ball off the bat of Aguila in the top of the fifth to allow a pair of unearned runs to score as the Isotopes assumed a 3-1 lead. The Sounds pulled within a run in the sixth when Durrington scored on a Kevin Orie sacrifice fly to reduce the Albuquerque lead to 3-2. Albuquerque starter Nate Bump (1-0) earned the victory in his first Triple-A outing of the season, limiting the Sounds to one run on four hits while fanning six over a solid five innings. Lehr (5-6) drew the loss after allowing three runs (one earned) on only two hits in six frames. J.B. Miadich tossed two scoreless innings to nail down his 11th save of the year for the Isotopes. The teams continue the series with a 7 p.m. meeting on Tuesday evening at Greer Stadium. Right-hander Gary Glover (NR) will make his Sounds debut when he takes the hill for Nashville. Albuquerque will counter with southpaw Les Walrond (3-4, 4.50). Audio Link of a great Brad Nelson catch at the wall -- while colliding with Dave Krynzel: www.nashvillesounds.com/a...206-13.mp3 ***Link while active, text follows: www.nashvillecitypaper.co...s_id=42166 Depleted Sounds fall to Isotopes 3-2 By Mark McGee, Nashville City Paper Sports Correspondent For the first time this season neither first baseman Prince Fielder nor second baseman Rickie Weeks was on the field for the Nashville Sounds. Both Weeks and Fielder were in Tropicana Field wearing the uniforms of the Milwaukee Brewers as they took on the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. Their bats were sorely missed Monday night as Sounds batters struck out 11 times and stranded six runners in a 3-2 loss to the Albuquerque Isotopes at Greer Stadium. ?We had chances,? said Nashville Manager Frank Kremblas. ?We had a chance to get runs in by making an out. In a low-scoring game you have to make sure you get that done by putting the ball in play.? A dropped fly ball in deep center field by Nashville?s Dave Krynzel in the top of the fifth allowed two runs to score. ?He did a good job getting back, but unfortunately for us it fell out of his glove,? Kremblas said. ?It looked like it might have sunk at the end a little bit with a weird spin on it.? Weeks joined the Brewers Friday. Fielder got the call Sunday. While Kremblas knew the top two prospects in the farm system could be called up at any time he never gave it much thought. ?I planned to just deal with it when it happened,? Kremblas said. Milwaukee?s trading of infielder Junior Spivey to the Washington Nationals for pitcher Tomo Ohka opened the door for Weeks. And Weeks, the No. 1 prospect in the Brewers? farm system, is not expected to be back in a Nashville uniform. Fielder, the No. 2 prospect in the system, faces a different situation. He is on the Major League roster to serve as a designated hitter while the Brewers play road games this week against American League foes Tampa Bay and Toronto. Fielder, who went 0-for-4 in his Major League debut Monday night, is expected to be back with the Sounds. Kremblas will wait and see. ?There was always talk about Spivey being traded, but it was always talk,? Kremblas said. ?You never knew if it was going to happen. But I knew if they did trade Spivey that Weeks would get called up.? Kremblas thinks the time with the Brewers will benefit Fielder. He grew up around Major League ballparks and Major League players thanks to his father, Cecil, a star for both Detroit and Toronto. ?This is not going to faze Prince that much,? Kremblas said. ?He?ll be excited about it. He needs to be excited.? As a designated hitter, Fielder can spend extra time before games working on his defensive skills. ?He?ll get some at bats, and he won?t have to worry about playing defense,? Kremblas said. ?He can get a lot of extra work on ground balls before the game, but when the game starts all he has to worry about is swinging the bat.? Weeks left the Sounds with 48 runs batted in and 12 home runs. Fielder led the team in home runs with 15 and had 47 RBIs. ?Obviously it?s a big loss,? Kremblas said. ?But this gives other guys on the team the chance to show what they can do. It may be more fun for me as a manager because I will have to hit-and-run a little more and start runners a little more.? The series with Albuquerque continues tonight at 7 with Sounds newcomer Gary Glover making his first Triple-A start of the season after being optioned by the Brewers. Left-hander Les Walrond (3-4, 4.50 earned run average) will start for Albuquerque. ***Link while active, text follows: tennessean.com/apps/pbcs....328/SPORTS Fielder off to join Brewers, for now Will play DH this week, likely return to Sounds By MAURICE PATTON Tennessean Staff Writer Prince Fielder has been called up by the Brewers, but he's not likely to see Milwaukee any time soon. The Nashville Sounds first baseman, who has hit three home runs in his last three games en route to a team-leading 15, joined the Brewers in Tampa Bay yesterday to handle designated hitter duties for Milwaukee's three-game interleague series there. He's expected to do likewise in a three-game set at Toronto over the weekend, then return to the Sounds by the first of next week. Fielder went 0-for-4 last night in Milwaukee's 5-3 loss to Tampa Bay. "Any time they want to call me up is good for me," Fielder said. "They probably wanted me to get my feet wet a little bit." "We knew he was going to go up for the DH series," Sounds Manager Frank Kremblas said. "It's nice to see him get up there, get some work against the big boys and see what he can do." Fielder, 21, probably couldn't have picked a better time for his first major league call-up. With his two-homer day in Sunday's 7-1 win at Iowa, the Brewers' first-round pick (seventh overall) in the 2002 draft has hit 12 home runs in his last 19 games. "He hit those two home runs (Sunday) and he was already coming," Brewers director of player development Reid Nichols said. "He's made everybody look smart." Fielder is hitting .253 with 47 RBIs. He leaves the Sounds ranked fourth in the Pacific Coast League in homers and seventh in RBIs. "He's swinging the bat pretty well right now," Kremblas said. Fielder's call-up came just three days after Rickie Weeks joined the big club in Philadelphia late Friday night. The organization's top three prospects ? Weeks, Fielder and shortstop J.J. Hardy ? are on the Milwaukee roster. Although the plan is for Fielder to come back, Kremblas is hopeful that's not the case. "If he does well, maybe they'll keep him," Kremblas said. "I don't want him to come back. I want him to do well. I'm sure no one in the league believes me, but I don't want him to come back. Same with Rickie. I want those guys to do well." "It's extremely possible that it's just temporary, but you never know," Nichols said. "There are guys that have been in this role and all of a sudden they're in the big leagues for good." To make room for Fielder, catcher Julio Mosquera has already cleared waivers and will rejoin the Sounds today. Maurice Patton covers the Nashville Sounds for The Tennessean. Sounds center fielder Dave Krynzel failed to hold onto a sharply hit line drive in the top of the fifth inning, allowing two unearned runs to score in Albuquerque's 3-2 win over Nashville last night. The Sounds had cleaned up their act defensively of late, putting together three straight errorless games to tie a season high. But Krynzel's error was the team's Pacific Coast League-leading 80th of the season. Nashville will need to be sharper in the future, especially without Weeks and Fielder, who were called up by Milwaukee Friday and yesterday, respectively. The teams were tied 1-1 heading into the fifth inning, as the Sounds' Corey Hart had smacked an RBI double to match a solo home run by Albuquerque's Chris Aguila. But the Isotopes' Ryan Jorgensen and Mark Little both scored when Krynzel failed to squeeze Aguila's two-out liner. "It look like it sunk toward the end and maybe had a little weird spin on it,'' Sounds Manager Frank Kremblas said. "(Krynzel) did a good job getting back on it. But, unfortunately for us, it dropped out of his glove.'' The Sounds trimmed Albuquerque's lead to 3-2 in the top of the sixth when first baseman Kevin Orie's sacrifice fly scored Trent Durrington. But Nashville left two runners on in the inning and six overall in front of a crowd of 3,604 at Greer Stadium. "We had our chances,'' Kremblas said. "We could have got some of those runs in. And in a low-scoring game like that, we need to make sure we get those in, even if it's not with a hit.'' Albuquerque got a strong performance from starting pitcher Nate Bump, who was making his first Triple A appearance of the season. Bump (1-0) allowed four hits and one run in five innings. Sounds starter Justin Lehr (5-6) surrendered just two hits and one earned run in six innings. Durrington delivers: When Durrington singled in the first inning, he stretched his hitting streak to six games, tying his longest of the season. He later stole his team-best 16th base of the season. Switching spots: Gary Glover, reassigned from Milwaukee last week, will start in his first appearance with Nashville tonight. Glover replaces Jose Capellan, the opening-day starter, who made his first relief appearance last night, pitching two scoreless innings. Familiar face: The Brewers signed veteran infielder Warren Morris to a minor-league contract and assigned him to the Sounds. The 31 year-old opened the season in the Cleveland organization but was slowed by a broken finger and was released last week after posting just two hits in 22 at-bats. Morris played for the Sounds in 2001, when he hit .305 with five home runs and 40 RBIs. ***Link while active, text follows: tennessean.com/apps/pbcs....328/SPORTS Fans at Greer should see Wood pitch this weekend By MAURICE PATTON Tennessean Staff Writer Chicago Cubs pitcher Kerry Wood should continue his rehabilitation from a strained right shoulder this weekend at Greer Stadium. Wood, who has been on the disabled list since May 3, passed his first rehabilitation test last night for Triple-A Iowa. In three innings against New Orleans, he allowed three hits, a run and struck out three on 46 pitches ? and hit his first professional triple. "Everything felt all right," said Wood. "I don't know what the velocity was, but I'm not concerned about gun ratings. What I'm concerned about is repeating my delivery each time, and I think I did that all right." If Wood is kept on a five-day rotation, his next start would be Saturday ? the second game of the I-Cubs' four-game series against the Sounds. It's more likely, however, that he will be held until Sunday to give him an extra day of recovery. He hopes to have a pitch count of 75. Wood made his last start for the Cubs April 30. In five starts this season, he's 1-1 with a 6.15 ERA. He missed two months last year with a triceps injury and struggled to an 8-9 record with a 3.72 ERA. The 1998 National League Rookie of the Year also underwent reconstructive elbow surgery in April 1999 to repair a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his throwing arm. Nashville Site Press Release on Prince Fielder, and the signing of veteran infielder Warren Morris: Link while active, text follows: www.nashvillesounds.com/n...ewsId=1622 The Nashville Sounds completed the delivery of a one-two punch to the Milwaukee Brewers this afternoon. Two days after top prospect Rickie Weeks headed north from Nashville to Milwaukee, # 2 prospect Prince Fielder has followed suit. Fresh on the heels of his third multiple-homer game of the season, Fielder received his first big-league callup on Monday when his contract was purchased by the Brewers. With the Sounds? major league affiliate needing an extra bat for its American League rules series in Tampa Bay this week, the 21-year-old first baseman fit the bill. Fielder, who was ranked as the 15th-best prospect in all of baseball and second overall in the Brewers organization by Baseball America prior to the season, batted .253 (58-for-229) with a team-leading 15 home runs to go along with 47 RBIs in 64 games for the Sounds this season. He added 13 doubles and carries a .507 slugging percentage. In his final game with Nashville, Fielder smacked a pair of home runs at Principal Park in Des Moines, Iowa on Sunday afternoon to lead the Sounds to a 7-1 victory. It marked the third time the youngster had belted two roundtrippers in a contest this season (also on May 23 at Portland and May 29 vs. New Orleans) Eighteen of Fielder?s final 20 hits for the Sounds were of the extra-base variety, including 12 home runs over his last 19 games since May 23. He racked up 28 RBIs in his final 20 games of Pacific Coast League action. He is currently tied for 4th in the PCL with 15 longballs, is tied for 7th in the circuit with his 47 RBIs, and is 15th among league hitters with 116 total bases. In addition to his power prowess, Fielder has demonstrated a keen batting eye, leading Nashville & tying for 5th among PCL hitters with 37 walks. Fielder, who was named PCL Batter-of-the-Week for the May 23-29 period after batting .360 with seven home runs and 16 RBIs during the seven-game span, belted his third career grand slam (an opposite-field shot to left) and matched a career high with six RBIs on May 28 against New Orleans. Fielder will be in uniform for the Brewers on Monday evening at Tropicana Field in Tampa Bay and will make his major league debut upon his first appearance. To clear a spot on its 25-man and 40-man rosters for Fielder, Milwaukee designated former Sounds catcher Julio Mosquera for assignment. The Brewers have 10 days to trade him, place him on waivers, or release him. He would need to clear waivers to rejoin Nashville. To fill Fielder?s spot on the roster, the Brewers have signed veteran infielder Warren Morris to a minor league contract and assigned him to the Sounds. The 30-year-old former Sound opened the season in the Cleveland Indians organization but was slow to recover from a broken right ring finger sustained in spring training and was released last week after batting only .091 (2-for-22) in five games for Double-A Akron. Morris previously played in Nashville during the 2001 campaign, when he hit .305 (68-for-223) with five HR & 40 RBIs in 57 contests for the Sounds. Link while active, text follows: www.dailymail.com/news/Sports/200506139/ Power pitching has team on three-game streak Jack Bogaczyk Charleston Daily Mail Sports Editor The West Virginia Power threw that young, 2-1 punch at Lakewood on a scorcher of a Sunday at Appalachian Power Park. The Power completed something it hadn't all season, sweeping a doubleheader from Lakewood. For the second time in a 23-41 season, West Virginia owns a three-game winning streak. In 15 innings, the Power completed the suspension of a June 6 game at Lakewood with a 9-8 triumph on Hasan Rasheed's pinch-hit RBI single. Then, the Milwaukee farm club got more stellar teen-aged pitching from the Brewers' top two picks in the baseball draft of 53 weeks ago, blanking Lakewood 5-0. The victories enabled West Virginia to move two games ahead of the BlueClaws and a half game in front of Hickory in the battle to avoid last place in the first-half race in the Northern Division of the South Atlantic League. Right-handers Yovani Gallardo and Mark Rogers, each 19, combined on the shutout, issuing no walks, and following on the heels of Josh Wahpepah's strong seven-inning effort in Saturday's 10-0 blanking of the Claws. Gallardo (1-3), the No. 2 Brewer pick in the 2004 draft, got his first SAL win, allowing four hits in five innings, throwing an economical 57 pitches. Rogers, the No. 1 pick a year ago, fanned six in four relief innings. He was the only one before a crowd of 2,339 dealing higher numbers than the thermometer. Rogers fanned several Claws in the high 90s, including a 99 mph pellet, as registered on the supposedly "slow" center field-fence radar, that whiffed Doug Gredvig to start the eighth. "I'm just going out and trying to throw strikes," said Gallardo, who a year ago on the calendar was a week out of Trimble Tech High in Fort Worth, Texas. "I'm trying to get ahead of hitters. "The difference between now and earlier in the season is I was a little wild then, and I was falling behind in counts. I just needed to concentrate more on the simple things, like throwing strikes." In 23 innings against Lakewood in this series, West Virginia pitching has allowed only one run -- a 14th-inning, game-tying homer by Gredvig off eventual winner Dave Johnson (3-1) in the opener Sunday. Don't dismiss the BlueClaws as some feeble team with the bat, despite the 21-43 record. They may have the worst record in full-season, low Class A baseball, but they're in the top half of the SAL in team batting average. "I'm reluctant to say they're pitching a lot better because the talent has been here all along," Power pitching coach John Curtis said. "I think the biggest thing is our pitchers have been in a lot of close games. It's taken them some time to learn to deal with that." The Power pitchers had no fluster Sunday, as Gallardo and Rogers nursed a 1-0 edge, on Will Lewis' third-inning single, until West Virginia scored four unearned insurance runs in the eighth off Lakewood reliever Matt Sweeney. The Claws got their own stellar pitching performance in a seven-inning, 11-strikeout, one-walk effort by lefty Derek Griffith (2-5). Gallardo has allowed only two earned runs in 14 2/3 innings of work (1.23 ERA) this month, and the Power has won seven of its last 11 games. Curtis was most impressed Sunday with the work of Rogers, who not only has bounced back from a pitching-hand blister that put him on the disabled list, but has worked through what Curtis called "some pretty significant" changes in his delivery. The Brewers' "piggyback" system of working two starters in the same game, with an exchange of roles from appearance to appearance, may be history soon because the young arms are ready and have a better idea how Milwaukee wants them to pitch. "We may be seeing, at most one, or no piggybacks in the second half," Curtis said. "I think some are strong enough now and ready to carry the load." Curtis said Wahpepah (the No. 3 Brewer draft pick in 2004), Gallardo and lefty Greg Kloosterman are likely to be the first to break from the piggyback plan. POWER PLUGS: The Power and Lakewood meet Monday night in Game 4 of the five-game series. West Virginia sends Brian Montalbo (1-2, 5.30 ERA) to the mound against Maximino De La Cruz (2-7, 4.78) in a matchup of right-handers ... Tuesday's game is the last date at Appalachian Power Park in the South Atlantic League first-half season. The Power finishes a tough first half with four games at Hagerstown, then opens the second half with four at Lexington ... SAL Northern Division All-Star Robert Hinton pitched five innings of scoreless relief for the Power over the suspended finish and restart ... Curtis said Rogers has learned he "doesn't need to try and throw a 150 mph fastball," after he threw 38 strikes in 56 pitches ...By taking the first three in the five-game set, the Power has won only its second series of the season. The other was 2-1 last week at Lakewood. West Virginia is 2-10-5 in series this season ... The Power team ERA has dropped from 4.84 to 4.65 in two days. -

Final: Nashville 7, Iowa (Cubs) 1 Nashville Site Game Summary: DES MOINES -- First baseman Prince Fielder belted a pair of home runs to lead the Nashville Sounds to a 7-1 victory over the Iowa Cubs on Sunday afternoon at Principal Park in the finale of a four-game series. With the win, Nashville (33-31) remains a half-game behind Memphis in the PCL American Conference Northern Division and earns a 3-1 series victory against the I-Cubs. Fielder's two-homer game was his third of the season and upped his team-leading longball total to 15 on the year. The Brewers' # 2 prospect spotted the Sounds a 2-0 lead with a two-run shot to right off Iowa starter Phil Norton in the top of the first inning. Nashville doubled the lead later in the frame on consecutive two-out RBI singles by red-hot Mike Rivera and Iowa native Brad Nelson. Audio Link to Fielder's first-inning HR: www.nashvillesounds.com/a...206-12.mp3 Nashville tacked on single runs in the fifth, sixth, and seventh frames to extend the advantage to 7-0. Fielder pounded his second tater of the afternoon in the fifth, a one-out solo shot to center off Norton. Dave Krynzel, who went 0-for-4 in his first start for the Sounds since returning from Milwaukee, plated the club's sixth run of the afternoon with a sixth-inning sacrifice fly. Former I-Cub Kevin Orie continued to enjoy a strong campaign against his old team, belting his 11th home run of the year -- a seventh-inning solo shot to left off Kevin McGlinchy -- to close out the Sounds' scoring. Iowa broke up the shutout bid in the bottom of the ninth against reliever Mike Adams. James Hoffpauir opened the inning with a double then moved up one base on consecutive fly ball outs by Nate Frese and Mark Johnson, whose sacrifice fly brought the score to its final 7-1. Nashville starter Rick Helling (5-3) logged his best outing of the season, picking up the victory with seven scoreless innings. Norton (1-5) gathered the loss after surrendering five runs over five frames of work for the Cubs. The Sounds return to Greer Stadium on Monday to begin an eight-game homestand with the 7 p.m. opener of a four-game series against the Albuquerque Isotopes (AAA-Marlins). Monday's series opener, the first contest between the club in Nashville this season, will feature Sounds right-hander Justin Lehr (5-5, 6.38) taking on Albuquerque righty Nate Bump, who will make his first Triple-A appearance of the season. Final: West Virginia 9, Lakewood (Phillies) 8, 15 innings, completion of Monday's suspended game Game of the year candidate -- 7-7 after 13 innings, then the fun began in the 14th and 15th... West Virginia Site Game One Game Notes: Remember, the Power were visitors in this one, so it wasn't a walk-off... The first game was picked up in the bottom of the eleventh inning tied at 7-7. In the top of the 14th inning Josh Brady snapped the tie with a two-out RBI single to give the Power an 8-7 lead. The BlueClaws tied the game at 8-8 in the bottom of the 14th inning on Doug Gredvig?s solo shot. The Power struck again in the top of the 15th inning when Hasan Rasheed delivered a clutch two-out RBI single which eventually led to a Power victory. West Virginia Game One Box Score: Linescore incomplete, but batting and pitching lines accurate; pretty wild how Robert Hinton threw five scoreless innings in this game -- two innings Monday, and then three more six days later... www.minorleaguebaseball.c...x_lwdafx_1 West Virginia Game One Game Log: Unfortunately, the log will only cover through last Monday's innings... www.minorleaguebaseball.c...x_lwdafx_1
