Link while active, text follows: www.al.com/stars/huntsvil...amp;coll=1 Schuerholz a sure thing when Braves meet Stars Son of big club's GM hurts home team in 7-1 win By MARK McCARTER Huntsville Times Sports Staff markcolumn@aol.com Give credit to John Schuerholz for building the Atlanta Braves. Give credit to Jonathan Schuerholz for destroying the Huntsville Stars. Schuerholz, the son of the Atlanta Braves' vice president, blasted a two-run homer to help ignite the Mississippi Braves' 7-1 victory over the Stars (23-35), their sixth win in seven games in a week's time against Huntsville. Schuerholz had a pinch-hit homer Sunday afternoon to propel Mississippi's comeback win, part of his six-game hit streak against the Stars. After an 0-for-5 night last Tuesday, when the Stars and Braves began this little eight-game tryst that ends today (12:05 start), Schuerholz has gone eight-for-18 with three runs scored, seven RBIs and two homers. "A blind squirrel,'' Schuerholz said, "finds a nut every now and again.'' A passel of blind squirrels with bats is pretty much how the Huntsville hitters seemed against Braves' pitcher Anthony Lerew, who pitched a complete-game two-hitter. The Stars' only hits were a leadoff bunt by Kennard Bibbs and a fifth-inning Enrique Cruz home run. Lerew wasn't overpowering, but was uncannily efficient. He only struck out two, but he worked quickly, kept his defense on its toes and was never in a jam. Lerew has been as devastating to Huntsville as Schuerholz. In three starts against the Stars this season, he has allowed only eight hits and one run in 22 innings, striking out 16. (With his triple Monday, Lerew has actually gotten half as many hits - four - against Stars pitching as he has given up to Huntsville hitters.) In this particular masterpiece, though, he was like an artist painting a mural from a shaky scaffold. "I wasn't really comfortable on the mound, but I think it's a good thing I wasn't,'' said Lerew. "I had to stay focused. I couldn't find my landing spot. I had to keep digging up the mound. There's a hole out there and I kept falling in a hole.'' Huntsville added a new player Monday familiar to both sides, a man who had been joined by Schuerholz at the occasional dinner and who was an acquaintance of Lerew. Brett Evert, a 6-foot-6 right-hander who was once among Atlanta's top pitching prospects, has joined the club. He had been with the Seattle organization until earlier this season and Milwaukee picked him after his release. Alec Zumwalt, the Stars' reliever and himself once an Atlanta farmhand, will likely go on the disabled list. He has a broken hand, suffered when hit while attempting to bunt Sunday. Evert entered in the seventh with one out and two aboard and, quickly, the game fell apart. Starter Manny Parra (2-5) was lifted after a single and a walk. Onil Joseph singled on a 1-0 Evert pitch and when the ball skittered under the glove of center fielder Tony Gwynn Jr., two runs scored and Joseph wound up on third. Jeff Francoeuer, the Braves' top prospect, homered on the next pitch, a shot that threatened passing traffic on the parkway. After an out, Scott Thorman doubled to deep left and scored on a Brian McCann single. A 2-1 nailbiter had turned into the 7-1 romp. That 2-1 lead that had been provided by Schuerholz. He hadn't been known, you suggest, as a power hitter. Mostly because, as he said, "I'm not. Before this year, I only had one career home run. And I'm still not going to consider myself a power hitter.'' Could have fooled the Stars. -
Turns out there was a specific reason for RHP Brett Evert's assignment to Huntsville: Stars Press Release -- RHP Alec Zumwalt was placed on the disabled list after he broke a bone in his right hand when he was hit by a pitch trying to bunt on Sunday afternoon. Zumwalt, 1-2 with a 4.14 ERA in 19 games this season, is expected to miss four to six weeks with the injury. Zumwalt was acquired by the Brewers from the Atlanta Braves along with pitcher Jose Capellan in exchange for pitcher Dan Kolb on December 13, 2004.

Final: Omaha (Royals) 9, Nashville 5 Nashville Site Game Summary: NASHVILLE ? The Nashville Sounds dropped their third consecutive game on Monday evening at Greer Stadium, falling 9-5 to the visiting Omaha Royals in the third game of a four-game series. Despite the loss, Nashville (30-29) retains its half-game lead over Memphis in the PCL American Conference Northern Division. The Sounds scored first, jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second against Omaha left-hander J.P. Howell, who made his career Triple-A debut in the contest. With one out in the inning, Brad Nelson singled, Corey Hart walked, and Mike Rivera reached on a fielder?s choice error by Royals third baseman Justin Gemoll. Ryan Knox followed with an RBI walk to drive in Nelson with the game?s first run before Steve Scarborough upped the advantage to 3-0 with a two-run single to center. Omaha responded quickly, taking a 5-3 lead with five runs against Sounds starter Rick Helling in the top of the third. Paul Phillips opened the frame by reaching on a throwing error by Sounds second baseman Rickie Weeks. Alejandro Prieto (triple) and former Sound Adrian Brown (double) followed with consecutive RBI extra-base hits to make it a 3-2 score. Designated hitter Ken Harvey then delivered a two-run single that put the visitors ahead to stay. Three of Omaha?s five runs in the inning were unearned following a pair of Nashville errors. The Royals tacked on another run in the fifth to take a 6-3 lead courtesy of Gemoll?s two-out RBI single to right that brought in Hocking, who turned in a 4-for-4 effort in the contest. Hocking struck again for Omaha in the top of the sixth, driving a two-out, two-run single to right to increase the lead to 8-3. Nashville got two runs back in the sixth, both in unearned fashion against Omaha reliever Justin Huisman. With one out, Royals left fielder Chad Santos dropped a Scarborough fly ball, allowing Rivera to score. After Huisman struck out Weeks with the bases loaded for the second out, Prince Fielder drew a walk to make it an 8-5 affair. Kevin Orie flew out to end the threat. Hocking contributed his third RBI of the evening with a sacrifice fly in the top of the eighth against Sounds reliever Mike Adams to re-up the Omaha lead to four at 9-5. Hart finished 2-for-3 for the Sounds and is batting .442 (19-for-43) over his last 10 games. Howell (1-0) earned his first career Class AAA victory after allowing five runs (two earned) in his 5 1/3 innings of work. Helling (4-3) was tagged with the loss after surrendering five runs (three earned) on nine hits over six frames. The teams wrap up the series with a noon finale on Tuesday afternoon at Greer Stadium. Right-hander Justin Lehr (5-4, 5.63) takes the hill for the Sounds to face Omaha southpaw Chris George (3-3, 5.97). Nashville's Julio Mosquera Press Release: For the time being, Trent Durrington backs up Mike Rivera, we suppose... Sounds catcher Julio Mosquera had his contract purchased by the Milwaukee Brewers on Monday evening and is in uniform for the club for this evening's series opener against the New York Yankees. Mosquera, who batted .204 with one home run and 12 RBIs in 25 games with Nashville, was added as an insurance poilcy for the Brewers. Starting catcher Damian Miller left Milwaukee's game on Sunday in Los Angeles after suffering a right groin strain. To make room on their 40-man roster for Mosquera, Milwaukee designated pitcher Gary Glover for assignment. The 28-year-old right-hander had gone 3-4 with a 6.70 ERA (37er/49.2ip) in 12 appearances (nine starts) for the Brewers this season. The loss of Mosquera leaves Nashville two players short of the 24-man active limit. http://www.nashvillesounds.com/images/news/mosquera.jpg

Final: Mississippi (Braves) 7, Huntsville 1 Huntsville Site Game Summary: Braves Big Inning Downs Stars, AgainAnthony Lerew tossed a complete-game two-hitter to pitch Mississippi past the Stars 7-1 Monday in the third game of a four-game set at Joe Davis Stadium. The Braves won for the ninth time in their last 10 games to improve to 30-28 and remained one game behind front-running Jacksonville in the South Division, while the Stars slumped to 23-35 and lost for the 13th time in their last 16 games at home. The Braves have also taken nine of the last 10 with the Stars to move out to a 10-3 lead in the season series. John Schuerholz broke up a scoreless game with a two-out, two-run home run to left field off of Huntsville starter Manny Parra, who had not yielded a long ball since May 11 at Mobile. It was Schuerholz?s second in as many days and turned to be the second decisive two-out, two-run hit that he has delivered in the last two games against Parra. Enrique Cruz blasted a two-out home run, his seventh of the season, to left-center field for the Stars in the home fifth to slice the lead to 2-1. Huntsville did not pick up a hit the rest of the way and did not get a runner past first base over the last four frames. The Braves broke the game open in the seventh with five runs against Parra and Brett Evert, the former Braves farmhand who joined the Stars earlier in the day. Luis Hernandez singled to open the inning and moved to second base with one out after a walk to Gregor Blanco that spelled the end of the night for Parra, who has gone at least six innings in each of his last five turns. Onil Joseph greeted Evert with a single to center field to score Hernandez and Tony Gwynn, Jr. overran the ball, allowing Blanco to score and Joseph to reach third base. Jeff Francoeur then drilled the next pitch from Evert over the wall in left-center for a two-run home run, his ninth of the season and third against Huntsville. Brian McCann finished the rally with a two-out single to score Wes Timmons, who had doubled. The five-run rally was the second for the Braves in as many days, as they totaled five in the ninth in Sunday?s comeback win, and the fifth time the Stars had allowed as many runs in an inning this year. Lerew threw 101 pitches in spinning the first complete game in Mississipi Braves history and defeated the Stars for a third time in three starts. The right-hander allowed two hits and walked three and has now held Huntsville to two runs, on solo homers, and eight hits over 22 innings in his three outings. Lerew struck out only two and has fanned 16 in his three starts against the Stars, who were held to one run for the sixth time in 12 starts during the time that Parra has actually been on the hill. Huntsville?s Nelson Cruz went hitless in four at-bats and lost a nine-game hitting streak, equaling the longest for a Stars batter this season. The series concludes Tuesday afternoon with right-hander Glenn Woolard taking the hill for the Stars against Braves right-hander Matt Wright. Coverage of the game gets underway at 11:50 a.m. central time on ESPN 1450 AM and via the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com. Huntsville Box Score: Where do you look for positives with this club? Game suspended, West Virginia 7, Lakewood (Phillies) 7, after 10 and 1/2 innings in Lakewood Update from the BlueClaws' Site: Lakewood, NJ - The Lakewood BlueClaws (18-37) and the West Virginia Power (18-37), Single-A affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers, had their game suspended because of heavy rain and lightning. The game was in the bottom of the 11th inning with both teams tied at 7-7. The BlueClaws and the Power will resume the game in West Virginia on Saturday, June 11th or Sunday, June 12th. Lakewood took a 7-2 lead into the eighth inning but the Power plated five runs on three hits to tie the game 7-7. Reliever Jake Tompkins started the eighth and could only get one out in the inning as the Power batted around. With the bases loaded and one out Grant Richardson drew a walk to plate a run. Then an RBI base hit by Carlos Corporan made the score 7-3 and chased Tompkins out of the game. Jacob Barrack relieved Tompkins but did not fair much better allowing a bases-loaded walk to the first batter he faced allowing a run to score. Josh Murray then connected for a two-run base hit to tie the game at 7-7. Tompkins line for the inning was five runs on one hit while walking one in just 1/3 of an inning. Lakewood trailed 1-0 entering the sixth but plated seven runs on five hits to take a 7-1 lead. Ryan Frith started off the inning with a double then moved to third on a base hit from Jesus Merchan. Mike Dzurrilla then connected for an RBI double to tie the game and following an intentional pass to Sam Orr, Doug Gredvig was hit by a pitch to put Lakewood up 2-1. Greg Isaacson then followed up with a two-run double. The BlueClaws got another run on a throwing error from Agustin Septimo allowing Gredvig to score from third and Lakewood had a 7-1 lead. Derek Griffith started the game for Lakewood and got the no decision. Griffith allowed two runs on five hits while walking one and striking out three over the course of seven innings. After seeing the end of the game yesterday suspended the Hammerheads wasted little time in finishing what they started as a tenth inning home run in game one and game two saw Jupiter take two games in just eleven innings of action. The game that was resumed from yesterday?s rain took little time to finish as a solo shot took out the Manatees in just 19 minutes. Game two was more of the same for the Hammerheads and the Manatees. The Manatees went ahead in the first before Jupiter would put up three runs of their own in the sixth to lead 3-1. The Manatees came back to tie up at three runs apiece in the eighth before falling once again in extra frames with the help of the longball. Congratulations go out to the Southern League's Pitcher of the Week! Southern League Press Release: Huntsville starter Dana Eveland gave up zero earned runs in two starts last week on his way to being named the BC Powder Pitcher of the Week. In the Stars? 8-2 victory over Tennessee May 30, Eveland pitched seven innings, allowing only one hit in picking up his fourth win of the season. In his next start on June 4 against Mississippi, Eveland improved his record to 5-4 on the season, allowing three hits in six innings while striking out six in Huntsville?s 8-1 win. Eveland is currently tied for fifth in the Southern League with a 2.94 ERA and tied for second with 70.1 innings pitched this season. The lefty was selected by the Brewers in the 16th round of the 2002 draft and signed as a draft-and-follow on May 26, 2003. Baseball America rates Eveland the 12th best prospect in the Brewers? organization. -

Link while active, text follows: www.al.com/stars/huntsvil...amp;coll=1 Mississippi leaves Stars stranded Huntsville pays price for leaving men onbase in 8-5 loss By SKIP VAUGHN For The Times skipv@htimes.com Mississippi Braves left-hander Chuck James almost had his career end before it started in 2002. He and his buddies were jumping off a roof into a swimming pool at Chattahoochee Valley Junior College in Phenix City. They'd made the jump before, but this time James broke both wrists. The Atlanta Braves were planning to draft him in the third round, but everything changed with that mishap. James thought his pitching career had ended. "I hoped it didn't but the thought definitely crossed my mind," he said. The Braves ended up drafting him in the 20th round. And here he was Sunday, starting for Mississippi against the Huntsville Stars. He entered with a 2-0 record and 1.99 ERA. He got a no decision but pitched six innings and had seven strikeouts and no walks while allowing three runs and seven hits. "I felt pretty good, other than giving up three runs," James said. "Overall I'm pretty happy about it. I got my first hit." The Braves trailed 5-3 entering the ninth but rallied for five runs against Stars closer Matt DeWitt for an 8-5 win before an announced crowd of 1,774 at Joe Davis Stadium. "DeWitt has been throwing the ball very well for the last four or five outings," Stars manager Don Money said. "We had plenty of opportunities to be leading by more than two." Indeed, the Stars stranded eight base runners. Mississippi stranded nine. "As much as we shot ourselves in the foot all day, I feel fortunate we came back and won it," Braves manager Brian Snitker said. Pinch-hitter Jon Schuerholz set the tone in the ninth with his leadoff homer, his second of the year. But the big blow was Scott Thorman's three-run shot, his ninth. "It was a fastball," Thorman said. "I think it was a bit away. I was just looking for something I could really drive." Stars starter Dennis Sarfate allowed two runs in the first but settled down and lasted seven innings. He only gave up one more run and finished with four strikeouts. "The first inning's been a struggle all year," he said. "Once I got past that first inning, the guys played defense all day. Some things happened in that ninth inning you can't control. I'm proud of the way the guys played all day." Blaine Boyer (2-4) got the win with two innings in relief for the Braves and Jorge Vasquez earned his eighth save with a perfect ninth. DeWitt (1-3) allowed five runs, four earned, with four hits, one walk and two strikeouts in the ninth. But the Stars collectively felt they should have had a bigger lead. "You get people on base you've got to take advantage of them," Huntsville hitting coach Sandy Guerrero said. "Now we're not." Huntsville did get two hits apiece from Tony Gwynn Jr., Nelson Cruz - who hit his 12th homer - Vinny Rottino, Jeff Winchester and Enrique Cruz. Winchester had three RBIs. Wes Timmons hit his third homer of the season for Mississippi in the seventh. The Stars (23-34) and Braves (29-28) play the third of their four-game series tonight at 7:05 at Joe Davis Stadium. The probable starters are left-hander Manny Parra (2-4, 3.86) for Huntsville and right-hander Anthony Lerew (4-2, 4.69) for Mississippi. -

Nashville Site Game Summary: NASHVILLE ? The Nashville Sounds were held to a season-low three hits in a 4-0 shutout loss to the Omaha Royals on Sunday evening at Greer Stadium in the second game of a four-game series. The shutout was Omaha?s first goose egg victory and the Sounds? second shutout loss of the season. Despite the loss, Nashville (30-28) retains a half-game lead over Memphis in the PCL American Conference Northern Division. The visitors jumped out to an early 3-0 lead with a two-out rally against Sounds starter Jeff Housman in the top of the first inning. With two down and runners on first and second, Omaha designated hitter Calvin Pickering put the Royals on the board with an opposite-field RBI double to left to bring home Denny Hocking. Justin Gemoll followed with a two-run single to center to score Aaron Guiel and Pickering. Omaha starter Dennis Tankersley was on cruise control through the first half of the game, holding the Sounds hitless over the first five innings of action. Prince Fielder led off the bottom of the sixth with a single to right to break up the no-hit bid. The Sounds left the bases loaded twice, in the third and in the sixth. Nashville had the bags full with only one down in the sixth against Tankersley, but former Sound Shawn Camp came on to record two outs to end the frame and escape any damage. The Royals tacked on an unearned run in the top of the ninth to advance the score to its final 4-0. Tankersley (3-5) allowed two hits over 5 1/3 scoreless innings to notch his third victory. He walked five and struck out five. Housman (2-5) surrendered three runs on eight hits over five frames to absorb a loss for his fourth consecutive start. Camp earned his first save of the year with 3 2/3 scoreless frames to close out the contest. It was Omaha?s second consecutive three-inning save this series. The teams continue the series with a 7 p.m. meeting on Monday evening at Greer Stadium. Right-hander Rick Helling (4-2, 4.50) will take the hill for the Sounds to face Omaha southpaw J.P. Howell, who will make his career Triple-A debut for the Royals after joining the club from Double-A Wichita. Link while active, text follows: tennessean.com/apps/pbcs....1/SPORTS04 Sounds avoid no-hitter, but still lose Fielder breaks up bid with sixth-inning single By MAURICE PATTON Tennessean Staff Writer Prince Fielder's single to lead off the sixth inning last night was a welcome sight ? and not just because his Nashville Sounds were trailing by three runs. Fielder's base hit broke up a no-hit bid by Omaha starter Dennis Tankersley, who had worked around five walks to take a shutout into the sixth. While the Sounds avoided the no-hitter, they couldn't avoid their second consecutive loss as they committed a season-high four errors in a 4-0 defeat. "If we'd gotten 10 hits and no runs, it's still a loss," Fielder said after the Sounds ? who lead the Pacific Coast League American Northern Division ? fell to 4-6 against their third-place divisional rival. "(Last night) he dealt. Sometimes, you've just got to tip your cap. He had us no-hit." Fielder's single was followed by a Kevin Orie infield base hit, and Nashville went on to load the bases before a Chris Barnwell strikeout and a Ryan Knox fielder's choice to end the threat. "We had chances. We just didn't get the job done," Nashville Manager Frank Kremblas said. "When (Tankersley) is on, he's a pretty good pitcher. His fastball is in the low 90s and he was able to throw some sliders for strikes, which makes his fastball a little faster. "We got runners in scoring position, but he made pitches to get us out. It was just one of those nights, I hope." On the night, the Sounds managed just three hits. "I think we've got some guys taking every at-bat like, 'If I don't get a hit, I'm gonna die'," Kremblas said. "If you start taking it like that, then guess what? You don't get a hit. So we've got to relax, play our game, and away we go." Struggles at the top: A roster spot wasn't all that Dave Krynzel vacated when he was promoted to Milwaukee last week. Since his departure, the leadoff position in the Sounds batting order ? filled by Trent Durrington in three games and Knox in one ? has accounted for just two hits in 18 at-bats. Game at a glance ?Losing pitcher: Jeff Housman (2-5). ?Big stick: Prince Fielder, 1-for-3. ?How they lost: The Royals scored three first-inning runs against Housman on a walk and three hits ? including a Calvin Pickering opposite-field two-out RBI double ? and starter Dennis Tankersley allowed just two hits and struck out five in 5+ innings. ?What they said: "It seems like we don't match up well with them." ? Nashville Manager Frank Kremblas, after sixth loss in 10 games vs. Omaha. ?Today's pitchers: Sounds ? RHP Rick Helling (4-2, 4.50 ERA). Royals ? RHP J.P. Howell (Class AAA debut; 2-0, 2.50 at Wichita). Maurice Patton covers the Nashville Sounds for The Tennessean. He can be reached at mopatton@tennessean.com. -

Link while active, text follows: sports.mainetoday.com/loc...ers1.shtml He throws with power... but now he's learning how to pitch By PAUL BETIT, Portland Press Herald Writer CHARLESTON, W.Va. ? "Say, aren't you the pitcher who throws 100 miles per hour?" asked the waiter as Mark Rogers slid into a restaurant booth last week. The question brought a smile and an appreciative nod from Rogers. It's nice to be noticed. Rogers, the hard-throwing, right-handed pitcher from Orrs Island who received a $2.2 million bonus from the Milwaukee Brewers after they drafted him fifth overall last June, feels quite comfortable spending his second pro baseball season in Charleston. "These are very nice people around here," Rogers said. "We're very fortunate." Not that Rogers has had much time to get to know many of them. Rogers spent his first pro season in Arizona, getting acquainted with a new way of life. This year he's in West Virginia, honing his skills and learning to become a major-league pitcher. Since reporting to the West Virginia Power in early April his days have been filled with baseball. There's not much time to socialize. "I'm at the ballpark from 2 to 10:30 p.m. every day, and I'm beat at the end of the day," said Rogers. The daily routine is broken by long bus rides the team takes every other week to play road games in the far-flung Class A South Atlantic League. Also, Rogers gets up earlier than usual following pitching assignments and goes to a local YMCA for hour-long workouts to strengthen his legs and upper body. While life as a minor leaguer can be a grind, it's an experience Rogers has been looking forward to for a long time. "Growing up, I always wanted to do this," he said. "But not until you experience it do you realize it's a dream come true. (Minor-league life) is not something you can prepare for. It's late nights and later mornings, seven days a week." ROUGH AROUND THE EDGES One of the nation's top high school pitchers last year, Rogers led Mt. Ararat High to the Eastern Class A championship and an appearance in the state title game against Deering. While he still possesses that powerful right arm, Rogers is very much a work in progress. Rogers is 0-4 with a 4.97 earned-run average for the Power. In 29 innings he's allowed 21 hits, walked 21 and struck out 39. "We're trying to make him a pitcher and not a thrower," said West Virginia Manager Ramon Aviles, who spent two seasons as a coach with the Maine Guides in the early 1980s. "He's a power pitcher, but we're trying to teach him he doesn't have to strike everybody out, that he has a defense behind him he can depend on." As his strikeout totals prove, Rogers hasn't lost anything from his fastball. In fact, it was clocked at 99 mph during a game this spring. "He routinely sits on 94 to 96 miles per hour," said John Curtis, the Power pitching coach. "He really doesn't have to throw any harder." Last spring, while playing for Mt. Ararat, Rogers could throw his fastball past most of the hitters he faced. In Class A, some hitters can catch up to it. "Coming from Maine, I'm not used to a whole lot of contact," Rogers said. "I'm averaging over a strikeout and a half an inning, but my pitch count has been higher than I'd like. "I've been averaging around 80 pitches for every five innings, which is all right but not great. I'd like to lower that pitch count and get more ground balls." The Power coaches want Rogers to become more efficient to save wear and tear on his arm. "It's not how many innings you throw," Aviles said. "It's how many pitches you throw." Rogers understands what he's being taught. "I want to be able, when the count is 1-0, to throw a fastball low and away and get a ground ball and not feel I have to strike everybody out," he said. During the past two weeks, Rogers' progress has been hampered by a blister that burst on the tip of his middle finger of his pitching hand. While receiving treatment, he went on the disabled list and was told not to pick up a baseball. "Mark is special and we have to be cautious with him," Aviles said. THE PLACE TO BE Although he's eager to continue climbing the minor-league ladder, Rogers is happy to be in Charleston. "Although it has a big-city quality to it, it doesn't have that big-city feeling," said Rogers, who shares a spartanly furnished apartment with two teammates in a leafy residential neighborhood in the shadow of West Virginia's impressive ivory-colored capitol dome. "It has that small-town atmosphere where everybody knows everybody. Most of the time when I'm out, I see another player who's driving around, or a host parent or a fan." A city of about 50,000 people nestled in the deep, narrow valley formed by the confluence of the Kanawha and Elk rivers, Charleston has a minor-league baseball tradition dating to 1911. The list of major-league pitchers who spent time playing in Charleston includes Hall of Famer Jim Bunning, Jim Kaat, Luis Tiant, Tommy John and John Candelaria. When Rogers pitched in the Arizona Rookie League last summer, there were seldom more than a dozen people in the stands. The Power, who play in the 4,500-seat, $23 million Appalachian Power Park, average more than 3,000 fans per game. The most rabid of Power fans has to be Rob Blackstone, an assistant to the mayor. Blackstone is better known as "The Toastman." At every home game, Blackstone toasts pieces of stale bread near his front-row seat behind home plate near the visitors' dugout. When an opposing hitter strikes out, he leads the crowd in chants of "You are toast! You are toast!" Then he tosses pieces of toast to the fans in the stands. "The Toastman" doesn't stop there. Blackstone has made cards for every player on the West Virginia roster, and he holds them to lead cheers when they come up to bat. Pitchers don't hit in the South Atlantic League. But when Rogers is on the mound, Blackstone sometimes holds up a card that says "Rogers over and out." Blackstone is impressed with Rogers. "He has very serious potential as a major-league pitcher," said Blackstone. "He has a good attitude. When his skill level catches up with his attitude, it should be a great combination. As long as he's with us, we're looking forward to toasting many more people." Last Tuesday, Rogers picked up a baseball and threw off the mound for the first time in nearly 10 days. "It's just a matter of waiting for the blister to heal," said Jim Rooney, Milwaukee's minor-league pitching coordinator. "We just want to make sure he's at 100 percent when he pitches again so he doesn't change anything, and we want to make sure it doesn't happen again." Rogers is expected to resume his march toward the major leagues Tuesday night when he's scheduled to start against the Lexington (Ky.) Legends at Appalachian Park. "He's gifted," Curtis said. "It's a matter of when, not if." ***Link while active, text follows: sports.mainetoday.com/loc...ebar.shtml Rogers honing his skills slowly, steadily By PAUL BETIT, Portland Press Herald Writer Like real estate, pitching is all about location, and Mark Rogers is in the process of learning how to locate his fastball. "The key to any pitcher's success is command of his fastball," said Jim Rooney, minor-league pitching coordinator for the Milwaukee Brewers. "Basically, he's developing his fundamentals." Even before Milwaukee signed Rogers after making him the fifth pick in the 2004 draft, there was concern about his control of a fastball timed as high as 99 miles per hour this spring. Since he reported to the West Virginia Power in the Class A South Atlantic League in April, the Brewers have worked with Rogers to improve his delivery. "His plant foot is about 17 inches off line from the (pitching) rubber," said John Curtis, the Power's pitching coach. "We're trying to get his (left) foot more in line with the plate." Because of where his left foot lands when Rogers delivers a pitch, he tends to throw the ball across his body, and some of his pitches stay high outside the strike zone. "Sometimes, when he reaches back to throw hard, his fastball will stay above the (hitter's) shoulder or neck," said Curtis, a veteran of 16 major-league seasons who started with the Boston Red Sox in 1970. "What I'm trying to do now is to get him to throw below the belt. In and out is fine. We want him to cut his strike zone in half." Control isn't the only reason Curtis is trying to get Rogers to change his delivery. Throwing across his body could lead to shoulder problems. "We want him to develop a more compact delivery," Curtis said. "We want him to maintain his good velocity and have good control." Milwaukee is bringing Rogers along slowly. Before he was sidelined recently by a blister, Rogers had been alternating a turn in the starting rotation with Josh Wahpepah, a right-handed pitcher from Shawnee, Okla. When Rogers started, he was limited to 80 pitches. When it was Wahpepah's turn to start, Rogers relieved him and was limited to 40 pitches. "This system provides protection for our youngest coming out of high school, where they didn't pitch that many innings, and for some of our college pitchers who may have pitched a lot," Curtis said. Gradually, Rogers' pitch count has been increased. Still, it took some time for him to get used to the piggy-back system. "Sometimes, Mark has had to come out in the middle of the inning," Curtis said. "You've had to pry the ball out of his hands, but he is a smart kid and he understands what we're trying to do, and he's embraced the system with its limitations." The goal is for Rogers to throw 100 innings this season. Curtis is impressed with how Rogers has taken to coaching. Often, he said, players who sign big-bonus contracts aren't open to suggestions. Like Rogers, Curtis was also a first-round draft pick. "I can relate to what Mark is going through," he said. "I know what all the attention means. But he is a level-headed kid, and he handles it well." At 19, Rogers is one of the youngest players in the South Atlantic League. But his coaches have no doubts he belongs there. "Mark has a great competitive spirit," Rooney said. "He's as strong as anyone he plays against and he has a lot of God-given talent, but like I told him, even Michelangelo had to learn his craft. There would be no Sistine Chapel if (Michelangelo) didn't learn to how to mix his paints, and that's what's happening here." Staff Writer Paul Betit can be contacted at pbetit@pressherald.com. Portland Press Herald Staff photos by John Ewing While waiting for a blister to heal, Mark Rogers has had to sit. "Mark is special and we have to be cautious with him," says his manager, Ramon Aviles. He signed a professional contract for $2.2 million a year ago, and has a future that is expected to include a career with the Milwaukee Brewers. http://www.pressherald.com/photos/050605rogers9.jpg Mark Rogers could have done a lot worse than being in Charleston, W.Va. The team plays in a $23 million stadium and averages more than 3,000 fans per game. And know what? Mark Rogers wouldn't want it any other way. Not in the slightest. http://www.pressherald.com/photos/050605rogers6.jpg Mark Rogers is throwing about 80 pitches every five innings this season, and that's a number he wants to cut. http://www.pressherald.com/photos/050605rogers8.jpg

Amazingly, huntsvillefan, when the mid-season point comes around and the teams below AAA all begin anew at 0-0, I'd give the Manatees and even the Power better chances of having winning second halves than the Stars. That group just isn't clicking at all, and shows little signs of doing so any time soon... -

Final: Mississippi (Braves) 8, Huntsville 1 So much for momentum -- tossed away in one disastrous 9th inning by a 27-year-old veteran with 29 major league appearances under his belt... Huntsville Site Game Summary: Scott Thorman?s three-run home run put Mississippi ahead to stay during a five-run ninth inning rally that resulted in an 8-5 win over Huntsville Sunday afternoon at Joe Davis Stadium. The Braves won for the eighth time in nine games to improve to 29-28 and remained one game behind South Division leaders Jacksonville and Montgomery, both of whom won Sunday afternoon. The Stars dropped to 23-34 and lost for the 12th time in their last 15 home games. Mississippi has taken eight of the last nine games between the two teams and leads the season series 9-3. Matt DeWitt opened the ninth inning on the hill for the Stars and was greeted by a pinch-hit home run by Jon Schuerholz, his second of the season, to trim the Stars lead to 5-4. Gregor Blanco dropped down a bunt base hit and Jeff Francoeur walked with one out before Thorman jumped on the first pitch he saw and launched a three-run clout to give the Braves a 7-5 lead. It was Thorman?s ninth of the year, second in three games and gave him 50 runs batted in on the season. Brian McCann followed by reaching on a two-base throwing error by DeWitt and scored with two outs when Juan Velasquez singled to right and catcher Jeff Winchester could not cleanly handle Nelson Cruz?s throw to the plate from right field. The two home runs allowed by DeWitt in the ninth were the first two he had given up on the season and marked the first time the Stars had allowed more than one home run in an inning. The Braves became the fourth team to score five runs in a frame against the Stars and the third to do it in the ninth inning and hit three home runs in a game for the first time. Jorge Vasquez retired the side in order in the ninth to earn his eighth save of the season and third over the last five games. Winchester?s run-scoring single and a pinch-hit, sacrifice fly by Tony Zuniga put the Stars ahead 5-3 in the eighth. Winchester had doubled in the Stars first two runs in the fourth inning to knock in three runs in a game for the first time this season and has knocked in 14 of his 15 runs at home. The Stars stranded Enrique Cruz at third base with one out in the fifth and failed to snap a 2-2 tie before Nelson Cruz led off the sixth with his 12th home run of the year to give the home team a 3-2 edge. Vinny Rottino followed with a triple but was left stranded at third base after Ben Van Idersinte, Winchester and Brandon Gemoll could not drive him in. Wes Timmons? leadoff home run in the seventh inning off of Dennis Sarfate tied the game at three and a string of 23 innings without giving up a long ball for the Stars stater. It was Timmons? third of the season and second at Joe Davis Stadium. Nelson Cruz, who extended his hitting streak to a season-high nine games, bounced into an inning ending double play with the bases loaded in the seventh. The series continues Monday night with left-hander Manny Parra taking the hill against Braves right-hander Andrew Lerew. Coverage of the game gets underway at 6:50 p.m. central time on ESPN 1450 AM and via the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com.
