Link while active, text follows: www.helenair.com/articles...205_01.txt Brewers complete 2005 roster with familiar names By TOM COTTON - IR Sports Editor The Helena Brewers completed their roster Saturday and there are names on the team that should be familiar to Brewers fans. Charlie Fermaint, Ryan Marion and Agustin Septimo return to the Capital City after playing for the Brewers last year. Also coming back is Simon Beresford who pitched for the Brewers' in 2003 and played for Class A West Virginia last season. Septimo was also promoted to West Virginia last season. Along with some old names, some talented new faces dot the roster as well. Outfielder Stephen Chapman was a sixth round pick in the 2004 First-Year Player Draft and has played in the Arizona Summer League. Catchers Brian Opdyke and Angel Salome were both fifth-round draft picks in 2003 and 2004 respectively and both played in Arizona. In all, 10 Brewers on the roster have experience playing in Arizona. The Brewers should also garner more attention than usual from Milwaukee as Ned Yost IV was assigned to Helena in late May. Yost was a free agent pickup from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh and is the son of Brewers manger Ned Yost. Helena General Manager Paul Fetz said he likes the look of the team which will be under the guidance of an experienced coaching staff led by manager Ed Sedar, who mentored the team in 2003. Sedar has also managed the Ogden franchise in the Pioneer League and has been a roving instructor for the Brewers. "The way I see it is we have an experienced coaching staff and the Brewers in the last three years have had a farm system ranked in the top three," Fetz said. "If you are in the top three you know what you are doing. I have to think we will be competitive." The new Brewers will start arriving today and training camp will begin on Monday. The season will start in Missoula on June 21. The home opener will be June 25 against Great Falls. NOTE: We'll work on getting an "official" roster list over the next few days -- Mass Haas.

Link while active, text follows: www.wvgazette.com/section...2005061141 Power pounds Lakewood early, often in 10-0 romp First-inning grand slam sets tone By Doug Smock Charleston Gazette Staff Writer The Lakewood BlueClaws seemingly had just jumped off the bus Saturday when they were jumped on by the West Virginia Power. Grant Richardson blasted a grand-slam homer in the first inning to send the Power to its biggest rout of the year, 10-0, before 3,484 recipients of free caps at Appalachian Power Park. Clay Blevins jumped into the act in the third inning. The left-handed hitting catcher, batting just .197 coming into the game, pulled his first career homer over the Powerball sign. That accounted for three more runs, giving starter Josh Wahpepah more than enough cushion. ?It felt great. I?ve been waiting awhile for that,? Blevins said. He said he is seeing the benefits of the Power?s new batting cage, set indoors in the old Morris Square building. As renovation of the large brick structure continued, the batting cage wasn?t operational until a month or so into the season. The cage gave the Power hitters a chance to work on their strokes during an afternoon thunderstorm that blew over Charleston. ?We?ve been doing a lot of work early in the cages before we come on the field,? said Power manager Ramon Aviles. ?Hopefully, they can be more consistent with their swings. Grant?s grand slam was huge and Blevins? three-run homer, that put the game out of reach.? The Power jumped into a tie with Lakewood in the battle to avoid the cellar in the South Atlantic League?s Northern Division. West Virginia leads the season series 3-1. Lakewood starter Carlos Carrasco was the poor soul who served up the gopher balls to Richardson and Blevins, falling to 1-7 in the process. After giving up a Hernan Iribarren single, Carrasco put himself in trouble by walking Carlos Corporan, hitting Josh Brady with a pitch and walking Tony Festa with the bases loaded. That gave Richardson the chance at a meaty offering, which he launched into the Contemporary Galleries parking lot beyond the left-field foul pole. ?The pitcher was in a hole and he just lost a guy with the bases loaded,? Richardson said. ?He had to come with a fastball and when you?re sitting ?dead red,? you better not miss that pitch.? From there, Wahpepah (3-3) took an 89-pitch night through seven innings, yielding just four hits and walking one. Ben Stanczyk was about as flawless over the final two frames of the 2-hour, 14-minute game. ?It was a pretty typical Wahpepah outing,? said pitching coach John Curtis. ?He threw a little harder tonight than he has, got a team that had a long bus trip [Friday] night. He brought the game to them and did a great job.? The series continues today with an earlier Sunday start, 1:05 p.m. (12:05 Central). The teams will finish a game suspended last Monday at Lakewood, with the BlueClaws about to bat in the bottom of the 11th in a 7-7 game. Thirty minutes after that game finishes, the teams will play a seven-inning game. Power points Blevins and Richardson both went 3-for-4 with four RBIs. Richardson scored three times, the third coming after a bizarre single and two-base error. When BlueClaws left-fielder Sean Gamble picked up Richardson?s shot down the third-base line ? by the Lakewood bullpen, no less ? he thought the ball was foul and flipped it to a fan in the stands. Richardson, who never made a turn to second, was awarded two bases. ?I tell you what, I thought the first baseman had caught it,? he said. ?That?s why I ran right through first base. It happens. I don?t know if his bullpen was telling him it was foul, or what.? Brady took Carrasco?s errant first-inning pitch off the top of the head. After an examination, he stayed in the game and took his base, but later was replaced by Adam Mannon. It was the fifth double-digit scoring game for the Power, whose season high is a 13-8 win over Lakewood on June 4. -

Link while active, text follows: www.al.com/sports/huntsvi...amp;coll=1 Stars notebook (through Friday's games) Paul Gattis Huntsville Times Covering the bases It's always intriguing to follow baseball's amateur draft, conducted Tuesday and Wednesday, with an eye toward what it could eventually mean for the Huntsville Stars. And among the possibilities are a former Alabama quarterback, the brother of a former Stars star and the No. 1 pick who is hoping to lead Miami to the College World Series and counts Yankees star Alex Rodriguez among his acquaintances. The Alabama quarterback, of course, is Spencer Pennington, whom the Brewers selected in the 32nd round. It might make more sense, though, for Pennington to return to the Tide for his senior season and take his chances in next year's draft. He was taken in the ninth round coming out of Fayette High before choosing a football scholarship. Because of football obligations and injuries, Pennington has played baseball sparingly. He redshirted in 2004 while recovering from shoulder surgery and got only 35 at-bats this season. It would seem that a season playing full time in college would only enhance Pennington's draft status. The Brewers drafted another familiar name in the eighth round. Jemile Weeks is a high school shortstop from Altamonte, Fla., and the younger brother of Rickie Weeks - who played in Huntsville last year and is rated the Brewers' No. 1 prospect this year by Baseball America. "We hope some day he becomes like Rickie," Jack Zduriencik, the Brewers scouting director, told the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. "We didn't draft him because he was Rickie's brother." Miami's Ryan Braun, the Brewers' No. 1 pick, will likely be the first impact player to reach Huntsville and could be on the fast track to Milwaukee because of his college experience. He is hitting .396 with 18 homers and 75 RBIs this season for the Hurricanes. Braun switched to third base from shortstop at Miami and got some advice on the move from a most knowledgeable source. "I had an opportunity to talk to (A-Rod) about the transition and what he went through," Braun told the Journal-Sentinel. "He gave me some pointers and hints. He told me everything he went through." Rodriguez, of course, made the same move when traded to the Yankees. The Brewers also selected Michael Brantley, the son of former major-leaguer Mickey Brantley, in the seventh round. Another former Star is in the major leagues. Rickie Weeks was promoted to Milwaukee following Friday's game after the Brewers traded second baseman Junior Spivey to Washington for pitcher Tomo Ohka. Spivey was considered a temporary answer at second until Weeks proved he was ready for the jump. At Triple-A Nashville this season, Weeks was hitting .320 with 14 doubles, nine triples, 12 homers and 48 RBIs in 55 games. The bad news, in the former Star department, was that outfielder Dave Krynzel returned to Nashville to make room for Weeks. The struggling Stars can take solace in knowing this isn't the worst first half in franchise history. The Stars were 25-37 going into Saturday's game against Chattanooga with four games remaining in the first half. The team record for most losses in the first half is 44 in 1991. ... When Dennis Sarfate homered on Friday night, it sent a dash to the seldom-viewed page of the Stars media notes that details the hitting prowess of the pitchers. Relievers Khalid Ballouli and Alec Zumwalt, who has a double, lead the team with three hits apiece. Starter Dana Eveland might be the best bet for a home run, with both of his hits in 25 at-bats going for doubles. Sarfate was perhaps the least likely candidate for a home run. He was 1-for-21 before the homer with a pitcher-high 11 strikeouts. ... Anybody noticed that right fielder Nelson Cruz is quietly putting together a monster season? He's hitting .311 with 12 home runs and 40 RBIs in 53 games. That could earn him a promotion, which would hurt Huntsville's offense. Even with Cruz, the Stars have scored 257 runs - fewest in the Southern League. ... The last Stars pitcher to win a game besides Eveland and Sarfate is Glenn Woolard, who beat Carolina 6-3 on May 23. Since then Eveland has won three games and Sarfate two. Around the league You couldn't ask for better races in either division. In the North, Carolina leads West Tenn by 1 1/2 games with the first half ending on Thursday. And in the South, Birmingham leads Jacksonville and Mississippi by 1/2 game and Montgomery by 2 1/2. And don't overlook the battle for third place in the North. Tennessee leads the Stars by 1/2 game and Chattanooga by 1 1/2. But overlook that Tennessee is 16 games behind Carolina. ... A closer look at the standings in the South reveals some surprising numbers. Both Birmingham and Mississippi have losing records at home while Jacksonville is .500 at home. All three have winning records on the road. ... Montgomery's Delmon Young was named the league's Player of the Month for May by the company that makes Topps baseball cards. Young, brother of Detroit's Dmitri Young and first pick in the 2003 draft, hit .389 with seven homers and 25 RBIs in May. Brewings Triple-A Nashville (32-30, first place in Pacific Coast League's American Division): 1B Prince Fielder is hitting .250 with 13 homers and 44 RBIs. Single-A Brevard County (22-39, last place in Florida State League's East Division): P Ty Taubenheim is 8-1 with a 2.39 ERA and just 60 hits allowed in 79 innings. Single-A West Virginia (20-41, last place in South Atlantic League's Northern Division): INF Hernan Iribarren is hitting .314 with 21 stolen bases. On deck The Stars have a day off today before hosting West Tenn for three games, starting Monday, to close out the first half. Chattanooga comes to town for a four-game series starting Friday. -

Link while active, text follows: www.al.com/stars/huntsvil...amp;coll=1 Stars Parra wins while out of sync By JOHN FERRY Huntsville Times Sports Staff jferry@htimes.com Left-hander Manny Parra felt his starts the previous five or six games had been better. "I didn't have my best stuff tonight," the Huntsville pitcher said after going eight innings against Chattanooga on Saturday night at Joe Davis Stadium. Parra said two factors made a big difference this time. "Throwing my off-speed pitches for strikes saved me," he said. "And the weather (a 14 miles per hour wind blowing across from right field to left) allowed fly balls to be knocked down." Parra threw 100 pitches, 66 for strikes, then Mitch Stetter put Chattanooga down in order in the ninth. The Stars left with a 2-1 victory, Huntsville's third straight win. Parra (3-5) also thinks Huntsville's team, now 26-37, has better days ahead. "Our hitting is going to come around," he said. "We just have to put it all together." Parra struck out seven and walked one. The Stars scored in the first inning when Tony Gwynn Jr. produced a one-out single to center, and with two outs Tony Zuniga got him home with a single to center. In the fifth, Huntsville got an unearned run. Guilder Rodriguez walked, was sacrificed to second by Parra and scored as Gwynn reached when Chattanooga first baseman Stephen Smitherman mishandled a throw. Chattanooga scored an unearned run in the eighth. The Lookouts out-hit the Stars 6-5 but hurt themselves with three errors. Phil Dumatrait, who allowed four hits over seven innings, took the loss. -

With the loss, Nashville (32-31) fell a half-game behind Memphis in the PCL American Conference Northern Division. Frese spotted the Cubs a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning with a one-out three-run homer off Sounds starter Jeff Housman, the infielder's third roundtripper of the year. Trent Durrington put Nashville on the board in the top of the fifth with a two-out solo blast off Cubs starter Rich Hill. The tater was the Aussie's third of the season. Rivera tied the affair at 3-3 an inning later when he crushed his third home run in the last three games, a two-run jack off I-Cubs reliever Will Cunnane. Audio Link of Rivera's HR: www.nashvillesounds.com/a...206-11.mp3 Frese put Iowa on top for good in the bottom of the frame with a two-out RBI single against Housman that plated Calvin Murray with the game-winning run. Cunnane (1-1) "pulled a Reyes" for Iowa, earning the victory after blowing his second save of the season. The veteran allowed two runs in his two frames of work. Jermaine Van Buren recorded the final six outs to record his sixth save for the Cubs. Housman (2-6) was dealt a loss in his fifth consecutive start after surrendering all four Cubs runs in his 6 2/3 innings. The team wrap up the four-game series with a 1:05 p.m. CT finale on Sunday afternoon. Right-hander Rick Helling (4-3, 4.74) will make the start for the Sounds and square off against Iowa southpaw Phil Norton (1-3, 6.79). -

Huntsville Site Game Summary: Link for Manny Parra photo, text follows -- www.huntsvillestars.com/s...newsId=631 Manny Parra pitched eight stellar innings to lead Huntsville past Chattanooga 2-1 Saturday night in the final game of a two-game set at Joe Davis Stadium. The Stars took both games in the set to win back-to-back home games for the first time since April 30 and May 1 to improve to 26-37, while the Lookouts dropped to 24-39. The Stars extended their winning streak to three, the longest win string since a four-game sweep of Tennessee from April 28 to May 1. Parra allowed a single to Norris Hopper, the first hitter he faced, and went on to retire the next 17 hitters before Hopper singled with two outs in the sixth. Jeff Bannon followed with a base hit before D?Angelo Jimenez struck out to end the inning. Parra issued his only walk of the night to Brian Peterson with two outs in the seventh and Junior Ruiz followed with a single before Rick Asadoorian lined out to left field to end the inning. The Stars scored the first run of the night in the first inning when Tony Gwynn, Jr. singled with one out, moved to second base on a walk to Vinny Rottino and crossed the plate on a two-out single by Tony Zuniga, who has knocked in runs in five of his last seven starts. Huntsville added an unearned run in the fifth when Guilder Rodriguez walked with one out, moved to second base on a Parra sacrifice, stayed put when Kennard Bibbs walked and scored when Stephen Smitherman at first base could not handle a throw from second baseman Kevin Howard on a Gwynn ground ball. Phil Dumatrait lasted seven innings for Chattanooga and suffered the loss after allowing only one earned run on four hits. The southpaw dropped to 1-7 despite a 2.55 earned run average, which includes only one earned run allowed over 14 innings in two starts at Joe Davis Stadium. Chattanooga scored its only run in the eighth when Hopper doubled with one out, advanced to third on a Bannon single before Jimenez lined out to second base. Rodriguez tried to double off Bannon but first baseman Rottino mishandled the throw, allowing Hopper to score and Bannon to advance to second base. Smitherman then struck out for the final out of the inning. Parra?s eight frames of work represents the longest outing by any Stars starter and he has now worked at least seven innings in four of his last six turns. Mitch Stetter retired the side in order in the ninth to nail down his fifth save of the season. Stars? outfielder Nelson Cruz singled in four at-bats to push his hitting streak to five and he has now hit safely in 14 out of 15 overall and eight of the last nine home games. The Stars are off on Sunday and open a three-game set with West Tenn on Monday night at Joe Davis Stadium. Huntsville will send right-hander Glenn Woolard to the hill against Diamond Jaxx left-hander Carmen Pignatiello. Coverage of the game gets underway at 6:50 p.m. central time on ESPN 1450 AM and via the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com. -

In the bottom of the first inning Tony Festa drew a bases loaded walk to give the Power a 1-0 lead. On the very next pitch, Richardson hit the first grand slam in Power history. The home run was his third of the season and it gave the Power a 5-0 lead. In the bottom of the second Hernan Iribarren slapped a double and right fielder Ryan Frith overthrew the cut off man, allowing Blevins to score and make it 6-0 Power. Blevins hit his first home run of the season in the bottom of the third inning, the three-run shot gave the Power a 9-0 lead. Blevins also brought in the final run of the game on an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth inning. Josh Wahpepah and Ben Stanczyk combined to pitch the second shutout of the season for the Power. Wahpepah (3-3) pitched seven scoreless innings and struck out six batters to earn the victory, and Carlos Carrasco (1-7) obtained the loss. The Power improve to 21-41 with the win and the BlueClaws move to 21-41 with the loss. On Sunday afternoon the Power will continue last Monday night?s game, which was suspended after the top of the eleventh inning in Lakewood. On the recently-signed Embry-Riddle duo: Brewers pick 2 Eagles By SEAN KERNAN Daytona Beach News-Journal Staff Writer Last week, pitcher Patrick Ryan and shortstop Kenny Holmberg did their utmost to help Embry-Riddle reach the NAIA World Series championship game. On Wednesday, the two former Eagles learned they're likely to remain teammates as they begin professional baseball careers with the Milwaukee Brewers organization. Milwaukee selected Ryan and Holmberg in the 19th and 22nd rounds, respectively, of Major League Baseball's first-year player draft. Both players met with Brewers scout Charles Aliano and were signed Wednesday night. They'll travel to Phoenix on Sunday and begin workouts Monday. "Hopefully we'll get to stick together and play together for the rest of the summer," Holmberg said in a telephone interview from Palm Harbor. "That would be a nice topping after what we did at Embry-Riddle." The added exposure of playing in back-to-back NAIA World Series in front of additional pro scouts certainly didn't hurt Ryan and Holmberg. Now Ryan, the highest ERAU draft choice since Doug Bridges was picked by the Angels in the 17th round of the 1998 draft, and Holmberg get to carry the ERAU banner to Arizona and beyond. After a five-day minicamp, Ryan and Holmberg will likely be assigned to the Helena Brewers, a short-season rookie team in the Pioneer League. Holmberg, 22, had been drafted before. The Toronto Blue Jays -- the organization for which his father, Dennis Holmberg, has been a minor league manager or coach for some 26 years -- drafted him in the 49th round in 2001 after he graduated from Dunedin High School. But still the thrill of getting selected by a major league organization got to Holmberg on Wednesday. "What's next? I'm ready for this," said Holmberg, who was drafted as a second baseman. "I'm ready for it all. It's gonna be a fun ride." Ryan, 22, is certainly glad to be going along for that ride after getting drafted for the first time. "I've been wanting this for a long, long time," said Ryan, a 6-foot, 200-pound right-hander who went 13-3 with a 1.60 ERA this season. "I went down to (the scout's house) and signed today. It's awesome." Neither player expected, nor received, much in the way of a signing bonus. That's the reality of professional baseball for college seniors who have no bargaining leverage. "The biggest bonus is getting a chance to play professional baseball," said Holmberg, who hit .342 with eight homers and 60 RBIs. "You make your money in the big leagues if you're good enough to get there." The Eagle who had hopes of being the highest draft choice in school history didn't have his name called. Junior pitcher David Timm had let it be known that he wasn't likely to sign unless picked in the first 10 rounds. Teams passed him by in the later rounds because his signing price would have been too high. "I thought Timm would go the first day (Tuesday)," ERAU head coach Greg Guilliams said. "David had told everyone, the scouts included, if he didn't go in the top 10 rounds, he wasn't going to sign. That's pretty much what Patrick (Ryan) did last year and it worked out good for him." Neither Stetson, which won the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament and advanced to an NCAA regional, nor Bethune-Cookman had a player selected in the draft.

www.starsboxscore.com/ Battle for the BasementYou get the two lowest scoring teams with the worst record in the Southern League, and you get what you expect --- at least for the first six innings....... The threat of rain from Arlene didn't stop nearly 5,000 "fans" from stopping by at Joe Davis Stadium, Friday, for a free Dave Krynzel Bobblehead at the gate, if you got there early enough....... With Saturday's game in jeopardy, and Sunday's to say the least, anyone named Arlene will get into Saturday's game free of charge. All they have to do is prove it with a valid ID at the ticket window........ After that was announced by the Voice of the Stars, Brett Pollock, he asked his compatriot in the booth, Bryan Neece, if he knew anyone named Arlene. Bryan said no. Brett said no, and they carried on this thread on the air for some time, unaware of the long-standing attendance of one of the Stars most loyal fans and Booster members, Arlene Deppensmith....... Arlene was quick to give the station's flagship 1450 a call to let them know, in the course, I'm sure, of trying to win a Kroger gift certificate......... Get to know the fans, guyzos. Commisserate with them. Say hello and know them by name. Steve Kornya saluted us on every broadcast and gave someone recognition every night and it endeared himself to the fans down below, who like to feel that they are part of the action. The Stars made it two in a row at home for the first time since April 30-May 1 in a game that went along like a speeding express at times and chugged along after the top of the 7th like it was crawling up Lookout Mountain........ No one scored in the first five innings, but while Josh Hall was breezing through the Stars order, Dennis Sarfate had to work to get his zeroes....... He threw 38 pitches, 20 for strikes, in the first two innings, going to a three-ball count on seven hitters and 82 through the first five....... While his fast ball was alive, topping once more at 96 mph on occasion, he had trouble finding the strike zone. Five of the first six hitters he faced saw ball one as their first pitch and the exception was a first pitch grounder by Jeff Bannon to 3rd baseman Tony Zuniga, who made a nice play to force Thomas Howard at second to end the inning........ Sarfate missed the strike zone on the first pitch to 11 of the first 16 batters he faced. Chattanooga was trying harder to get the upper hand, able to put five runners in scoring position, while the Stars were able to get only Nelson Cruz, who doubled in the 2nd. Cruz wound up being thrown out in a foolish attempt to reach third on a fly out to center by Brandon Gemoll...... The only other hit the Stars had through the first five was a line drive single by Tony Gwynn, Jr. in the 4th. Nevertheless, Sarfate settled down and started working more economically after the 3rd inning, and was able to keep the Lookouts off the bases. He retired the side in order in the 3rd and 4th and in the 5th, got defensive help from Nelson Cruz, who gunned down Brian Peterson trying to score from third on a single by Junior Ruiz, his first in 15 at-bats since joining the Lookouts........ In the end, Sarfate was able to work into the 7th, when I had thought he wouldn't last past five, and he bowed out after 107 pitches, 59 (55.1%) for strikes. Sarfate aided his own cause by breaking the tie in the 6th inning with a home run just inside the left field foul pole with one out and no one on....... Sarfate became the 2nd pitcher to launch a home run this year, following Manny Parra (who's scheduled to start Saturday night), who homered vs. Jacksonville, May 16. The ball landed in the left field corner, just beyond the fence, giving the Stars a 1-0 lead........ Despite a pitching staff that's only 14-for-120 at the plate, a .117 average that's the all-time lowest, it's the first to have two pitchers to hit a home run in a single season. The Stars added some necessary insurance onto Sarfate's home run as they batted around in the bottom of the 7th........ Nelson Cruz started by lining a single into left. Nelson has now hit safely in 15 of his last 16 games for a .393 average with 12 RBIs. After Gemoll walked, Tony Z.,, who's carrying a hot stick, hit a sharp one-hop liner off Thomas Howard's glove on the outer edge of the infield. Tony went to second on the error, but was given a hit, making him 10-for-22 in his last seven games (.455), driving in Cruz. Zuniga would add another RBI on a force attempt in the 9th, giving him eight RBIs in his last seven games...... Callix Crabbe was forced out after he walked, but Enrique Cruz's force play scored Gemoll, making it 3-0, and moving Zuniga to 3rd....... After David Bradley struck out, successive singles by Kennard Bibbs and Junior made it 5-0.. David Bradley came in to retire the last batter in the 7th and the first batter in the 8th, but after heaping praise upon him already for being the oasis of effectiveness in the bullpen, he gave up a walk to D'Angelo Jimenez, a two-run bomb to Howard, and another walk to Jeff Bannon. After striking out weak-hitting Josh Renick, an MTSU graduate like myself, and hitting Rick Asadoorian with a pitch on an 0-2 count, Bradley was gone....... Khalid Ballouli came in and after walking Brian Peterson to load the bases, Steve Smitherman dumped a hit into short left field, scoring two of Bradley's runners to bring the Lookouts within one and suddenly the ghosts of the last homestand were back, but Ballouli bore down and retired the next five hitters to preserve the win for Sarfate...... Despite Ballouli's relief, rocky at first, his ERA in five games in the pen is 6.23. Due to inclement weather provided by Tropical Storm Arlene, NASCAR Night, scheduled for Saturday, has been postponed and will be held on Saturday June 25. Despite the postponement of NASCAR Night, the game scheduled for June 11th between the Stars and Lookouts has not been cancelled. A final decision on the game will not be made until game time........ Parra will take the mound against Phil Dumatrait........ Manny has lost three of his last four starts with an accompanying 4.10 ERA, but he's had just three runs of support in three of those starts and lost a 6-2 lead he left behind in the other. Jamie Gann, now back in independent ball with the Bridgeport Bluefish was named Atlantic League Player of the Month for the month of May. Gann, the league's leading hitter (.372) topped off the month of May with a three game consecutive home run streak including two on May 29th against Atlantic City...... In the month of May alone, Gann hit .364 scoring 21 runs, with 40 hits, including 10 doubles and six homeruns and his on-base percentage was an impressive .418 while knocking home 26 RBI?s...... Gann hit .256 for the Stars last year........ Derek Lee, the winningest Stars pitcher of all-time, is pitching successfully in the Atlantic League this year. With the Somerset Patriots, Derek is 3-1 with a 2.54 ERA, 6th best in the league, and holding hitters to a .227 average. Derek was 42-35 as a Huntsville Star over five seasons with a 3.24 ERA, 3rd best mark of all-time. More from David Weiser: www.starsboxscore.com/standing.html
