Link while active, text follows: www.zwire.com/site/news.c...&rfi=6 Captains victory worth the wait 95-minute rain delay not enough to derail Lake County David S. Glasier, Willoughby News-Herald Staff Writer The Captains overcame a 95-minute rain delay and a slow start with the bats to post a 3-2 victory Friday over the West Virginia Power at Classic Park. First baseman Fernando Pacheco's RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning proved to be the game-winner, as the Captains broke a three-game losing streak and upped their record to 9-6. Pacheco is hitting .340 with four home runs and a team-high 12 RBI. The victory eased the frustration of a parade of Lake County runners stranded on base through the first six innings. In the bottom of the first inning, West Virginia starter Josh Baker gave up a a two-out single to Wyatt Toregas and consecutive walks to Mike Butia and Chris Gimenez to load the bases. Baker got out of the jam when Pacheco hit a routine grounder to first baseman Grant Richardson. After the Power took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning on an RBI single by right fielder William Lewis, the frustration continued for the Captains in the bottom half of the frame. Leadoff batter Juan Valdes doubled to left-center field, but the Captains failed to capitalize when Baker retired Brian Finegan, Jose Constanza and Argenis Reyes in order. The Captains again seemed to be on the verge of breaking through against Baker in the bottom of the fourth inning. Gimenez opened with a walk and moved to second base on Pacheco's single. The threat withered on the vine, though, as Baker got Valdes and Finegan on short flyouts before Constanza was retired on a routine grounder to Power shortstop Alcides Escobar. West Virginia extended its lead to 2-0 in the top of the seventh inning on an RBI single designated hitter Carlos Corporan. Finegan finally got the Captains rolling in the bottom of the seventh, against Power reliever Robbie Wooley, with a leadoff triple into the right-field corner. He scored on Constanza's RBI single. After getting his first RBI after 13 games and 42 at-bats, Constanza promptly stole second base and moved to third on a nifty drag-bunt single by Reyes. The Captains knotted the score at 2 on a double-play grounder by Marshall Szabo. Lake County reliever T.J. Burton worked out of a jam in the top of the eighth inning. He gave up a leadoff single to Escobar and walked second baseman Hernan Iribarren. A sacrifice bunt by catcher Nestor Corredor moved up both runners, but Burton buckled down to get Richardson on a line drive to Finegan and Josh Murray on a fly ball to Valdes in short center field. Burton (2-1, 2.70 ERA) earned the victory by pitching two scoreless innings in relief of starter Aaron Laffey. Kieran Mattison, promoted Friday from extended spring training in Florida, worked a scoreless ninth to earn his first save.

Nashville Site Game Summary: Link, text follows: www.nashvillesounds.com/n...ewsId=1519 The Nashville Sounds wrapped up their eight-game road trip with a victory on Friday evening at SBC Bricktown Ballpark, defeating the host Oklahoma RedHawks by a 7-2 margin. With the victory, Nashville (9-7) secured its first road series victory since last June and held onto a one-game division lead. The Sounds broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fourth inning when the club?s leading hitter, Kevin Orie, contributed a two-run double to plate Rickie Weeks and Brad Nelson and extend his hitting streak to 11 games. Oklahoma tied the game at 2-2 with a pair of runs in the fifth on Adrian Gonzalez?s leadoff solo home run off Sounds starter Jose Capellan and a Jason Conti sacrifice fly. Nashville jumped out to a 7-2 lead with a two-out rally in the top of the seventh. After Oklahoma starter Jason Standridge retired the first two hitters, seven consecutive Sounds reached base to net five runs. Nelson opened the scoring with an RBI single. Following an Orie walk, Trent Durrington and Pat Borders drew consecutive bases-loaded RBI walks before Steve Scarborough (3-for-5) ripped a two-run double to center to cap off the evening?s scoring. Capellan (1-0) earned his first victory of the season after allowing two runs and striking out four batters in six innings of work, while Standridge (2-2) was tagged with the loss after giving up seven runs on eight hits and issuing seven bases on balls in his 6 2/3 frames. Justin Lehr closed out the contest with three scoreless frames for the Sounds to pick up his first save of the year. The Sounds return to Greer Stadium on Saturday evening to begin an eight-game homestand with the 6 p.m. opener of a four-game series against the new division-rival Iowa Cubs. Right-hander Ben Hendrickson (0-1, 6.14) makes the start for Nashville and will face Iowa southpaw Renyel Pinto (0-2, 11.32). West Virginia Game Summary from the Captains' Site: Fernando Pacheco's RBI single in the eighth inning Friday lifted the Lake County Captains to a 3-2 vistory over the West Virginia Power in the opener of a four-game series at Classic park. The game was delayed for an hour and 35 minutes at the start due to rain. When the game began, the temperature was 46 degrees. The Power (2-13) took a 1-0 lead in the second inning against starter Aaron Laffey when William Lewis singled home Grant Richardson. Laffey was sensational, scattering just three hits over six innings. He walked three and struck out four. He left the game after six, trailing 1-0. The Power made it 2-0 with a run against T.J. Burton (2-1) in the seventh, but the Captains rebounded to tie the score with a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh off Robbie Wooley (0-1). Brian Finegan tripled into the right field corner and scored on Jose Constanza's base hit. Constanza stole second, went to third on a bunt single by Argenis Reyes and scored on a ground ball double-play by Marshall Szabo. The Captains took the lead in the eighth when Mike Butia doubled to lead off the inning. After a walk to Chris Gimenez, Pacheco stroked a single to right, scoring Butia for a 3-2 Captains lead. It was Pacheco's second hit of the night, and his team-high 12th RBI of the year. Kieran Mattison came on in the ninth and worked around a two-out single and an error to post his first save of the season. The Power wasted a stellar effort from start Josh Baker, who tossed five shutout innings. The Captains (9-6) snapped a three-game losing streak. The two teams will meet again on Saturday afternoon at 2:05 (1:05 Central).

Huntsville Site Game Summary -- link, then text: www.huntsvillestars.com/s...newsId=570 Casey McGehee knocked in three runs and scored twice to lead West Tenn to a 9-4 decision over the Stars Friday night at Pringles Park in the first of a three-game weekend series. Huntsville dropped to 7-8 overall, 1-7 on the road and lost a six-game win streak, while the DiamondJaxx improved to 10-5 overall and 5-3 at home. McGehee singled in Adam Greenberg with the game?s first run in the first inning and scored the home team?s second run later in the frame on a two-out bases loaded walk to Ryan Theriot. McGehee followed a leadoff double by Matt Murton in the third inning with a two-base hit of his own to make it 3-0 and then scored on a throwing error by Enrique Cruz to push the lead to 4-0. The Stars had been hitless through the first three innings before stringing together three hits to score twice in the fourth. Tony Gwynn, Jr. singled with one out and moved to third on a double by Vinny Rottino, his first extra base hit of the season. Nelson Cruz grounded out to score Gwynn and move Rottino to third but had to be taken out of the game after apparently sustaining an injury to his left leg. Tony Zuniga singled to left to plate Rottino to trim the Jaxx?s lead to 4-2 and knock starter Raul Valdez out of the game. Callix Crabbe doubled home two runs in the fifth against Carmen Pignatiello to tie the game at four and extend his hitting streak to seven games. John Vanden Berg and Enrique Cruz opened the inning with singles and advanced one base on a sacrifice bunt by pitcher Josh Habel, who had replaced starter Khalid Ballouli at the start of the fourth inning. Ballouli allowed four runs, three earned, on six hits over three innings, matching Manny Parra for the shortest outing by a Stars? starter this season. West Tenn grabbed the lead for good in the sixth with two runs on a successful squeeze bunt by Pignatiello and a bases loaded walk to Murton, the first hitter faced by Alec Zumwalt in relief of Habel. The home team put distance between itself and the Stars with three more runs in the eighth off of Matt DeWitt. Stars pitchers walked a season worst seven hitters, walked in three runs, wild pitched in another marker and yielded a dozen hits. Habel suffered the loss after 2 2/3 innings, his longest outing of the year, during which he gave up two runs, one earned, on two hits and two walks. Enrique Cruz finished with two doubles and a single and collected three hits in a game for the third time this season, while Crabbe walked twice and has now drawn five bases on balls over the last two games. The Stars will send left-hander Dana Eveland to the mound in the second game of the series Saturday against Jaxx right-hander Jae-kuk Ryu. Coverage of the game gets underway at 6:20 p.m. central time on ESPN 1450 AM and through the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com.

Brevard County Game Summary from the Hammerheads' Site: Reggie Abercrombie submitted a stellar offensive performance for the Hammerheads tonight at Roger Dean Stadium, but Jupiter came up just short in the run column, losing to the Brevard Manatees 5-4. Abercrombie went 4 for 4 and came a triple shy of hitting for the cycle. He had two doubles, a home run, a single and all four Hammerhead RBI?s. Brevard came up one run better though, scoring one in the 1st, one in the 4th, and three in the 5th, all off Hammerheads starter Josh Teekel (0-2). Teekel dropped his second game of the year, while Brevard?s Ty Taubenheim (3-0) picked up his third win. Taubenheim pitched seven innings, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out five. This time it was Brevard who jumped out first, capitalizing on a throwing error by Hammerheads catcher Patrick Arlis, allowing Ozzie Chavez to advance to third with nobody out. Drew Anderson would hit a sac fly to center, driving Chavez in for the game?s first run. Jupiter would answer in the bottom of the second, when Abercrombie drove in the first of his four runs on the night with an RBI double to left. Reggie also hit a solo homer to left in the bottom of the 4th. Brevard would get one more in the 4th and three more in the 5th. Brevard would lead off the 5th with back-to-back singles from Lou Palmisano and Anderson. Adam Heether was hit by Teekel, followed by an RBI single from Jeff Eure which would chase Teekel from the game. Paul Mildren would come on and shut the door on the Manatees, pitching three perfect innings of relief, striking out five. The Hammerheads would make a run for it in the bottom of the 8th. With two outs, Ryan Bear and Kevin Randel connected on back-to-back singles. That left the door open for Abercrombie to rack up two more RBI?s on a double to center. Patrick Arlis would follow up with a walk, but shortstop Todd Brock struck out to end the inning and the Jupiter rally. These two teams will play their series finale tomorrow at Roger Dean Stadium. Game time is 6:05 (5:05 Central), and the pitching match-up will feature Hammerheads ace James Russ (2-0) facing off against Carlos Villanueva (1-0).

Link while active, text follows: www.wvgazette.com/section.../200504222 Power hurt by homers, but Curtis sees hope By Mike Whiteford Charleston Gazette Staff Writer After the season?s first two weeks, Power pitchers have been most generous in permitting home runs. The 22 homers yielded by the Power are far and away a South Atlantic League worst and reflect both the hitter-friendly conditions at Appalachian Power Park and the pitchers? inability to locate their pitches properly. Nevertheless, Power pitching coach John Curtis can cite some favorable, if arcane, numbers: his pitchers have compiled a 2-to-1 strike-ball ratio with their fastballs. Throwing fastballs for strikes, Curtis said, is one of the Milwaukee organization?s highest priorities at the Class A level. ?We?re looking for fastball command,?? said Curtis. ?We?re looking for their ability to throw fastballs in the zone when they want and leave the strike zone when they want and then come back in. The secondary pitches are things they?re working on right now. But it?s their fastball control that?s going to get them out of this league. We feel that with the fastballs they have, they can win in this league if they keep the ball down.?? The Power?s earned run average of 5.40 ranks 15th in the 16-team league, but Curtis noted that his pitchers are mostly 19- and 20-year-olds in a league where many of the hurlers are former college players and are 22 and 23 years of age. ?I feel like we?re a freshman team going up against varsity competition,?? he said. ?But we knew that going in. In fact, I?ve been really pleased with the way we?ve pitched. I?ve seen some very good things. I?ve seen an aggressive approach. They?ve not been intimidated. They?ve gone after the hitters. In my humble estimation at least, they?re coming along at this point.?? Lexington manager Tim Bogar played at Watt Powell Park in 1988 as a member of the Columbia Mets. He vividly remembers the old park but much prefers the new one, Appalachian Power Park. ?This is like a cathedral compared to that,?? said Bogar, a former New York Met. ?I think this is a beautiful park with great surroundings. I love the building here in the corner.?? POWER POINTS: The Power visits Lake County tonight to begin an eight-day, eight-game road trip. After four games at Lake County, the Power will visit Hickory for a four-game series. The Power will return to APP April 30 for an eight-game, nine-day homestand. ... First baseman Grant Richardson said success on the road might carry over to the next home stand. ?I think if we go on the road and win some games ? I?m not saying we?re going to go 8-0 on the road ? we?ll come back here a little more comfortable,?? he said. ?We?re going to build, build and build. I think it?s all uphill from here.?? ... Power general manager Andy Milovich expects more efficiency at the concession stands in the next homestand. ?I wish we would have had more time to prepare,?? Milovich said Thursday night. ... In attendance, the Power ranks fourth in the 16-team league with a 3,904 average through six games entering Thursday?s game. Greensboro, which opened a new park this year, leads the league with a 5,598 average through seven games. The Power?s average took a hit at Wednesday morning?s Grand Slam School Day, which drew just 2,480. The next Grand Slam Youth Day is May 2.

Link while active, text follows: www.wvgazette.com/section...2005042148 Power pummeled First homestand in new park ends with 2-5 record By Mike Whiteford Charleston Gazette Staff Writer As a modest contribution to the Power?s needy offense, Will Lewis opened the game with a wicked single to left. Three batters later, the Power had a run and some hope for an upgrade on a team batting average, season run total and won-lost record that rank last in the South Atlantic League. The early optimism quickly gave way to more of the same, however. The Lexington Legends matched the Power?s run in the second inning, scored three more in the fourth and kept building on their lead en route to an 8-1 victory Thursday night at Appalachian Power Park. Thus, the Power posted a 2-5 record in its first-ever homestand and stands 2-12 on the season. On a night marred by nearly two hours of rain before game time, a crowd of about 2,000 attended. The Power, who entered the game with a .205 average, collected just four hits and has scored only 37 runs in its first 14 games. In a season that has brought little to cheer about, the home team?s first-inning run stirred up considerable noise at APP, where the fans have been reveling in their new park and seem eager to rejoice at the first hint of Power success. ?The fans have been great, even though we?ve had a couple rough games,?? said Power first baseman Grant Richardson. ?They jump on every positive thing they can, and that helps us. Things will get better. You can?t dwell on the first few weeks.?? Power manager Ramon Aviles and his coaches addressed the team after the game and took a positive approach. ?We told them we believe in them and we know we?re going to get better,?? said Aviles. ?They probably get tired of hearing that every day, but we believe in this group. We hit and played a lot better in spring training than we are now. Defensively, we?re doing fine and making all the plays, but we?re just not hitting consistently.?? The Power?s only run was unearned. After Lewis singled, Alcides Escobar reached on a fielder?s choice, took second on another fielder?s choice and scored on Richardson?s infield single, on which the throw to the plate bounced away for an error. In the fourth inning, the Legends took advantage of wildness by Power starter Forrest Martin to score three runs. Francisco Carabollo cleared the bases with a double to left center following a single and back-to-back walks to load the bases. The Legends hit two solo homers ? Hunter Pence sliced an opposite-field drive just over the right-field fence in the seventh inning and Mario Graza blasted a much longer one to deep right-center in the eighth. ?I think the ball carries pretty well here,?? said Lexington manager Tim Bogar. ?It?s not the biggest park I?ve every played in, but it?s not the smallest either. I think if you pitch well here and keep the ball down, you?ll be all right.?? Power?s Alcides Escobar slides home safely, beating the tag by Lexington catcher Lou Santangelo. Huntsville Site Game Summary: Link with Callix Crabbe photo, text follows: Might I add that the game summaries from each affiliate have been very good, and particularly outstanding from Nashville and Huntsville -- Brett Pollock's writeups have been as detailed as his predecessor Robert Portnoy's... www.huntsvillestars.com/s...newsId=569 Callix Crabbe knocked in the winning run with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift the Stars to a 6-5 win over the Mobile BayBears Thursday night to complete a four-game sweep at Joe Davis Stadium. The Stars finished their first home stand of the year with six straight wins after an Opening Night loss to improve to 7-7, while the visitors lost their franchise worst 10th consecutive game to drop to 4-10 on the season. Enrique Cruz led off the home ninth with a double and advanced to third base one out later on a wild pitch uncorked by Rusty Tucker, who then walked Kennard Bibbs and Tony Gwynn, Jr. to load the bases. Dale Thayer was brought on to pitch as part of a double switch and Crabbe drove his 3-2 offering deep into right field where it was caught by Casey Baker, who was on the move toward the corner. Cruz scored easily to give the home team its second walk-off win in the series. Mobile was undone by a lack of control in the bottom of the seventh inning that turned a 4-0 lead into a 5-4 deficit. Starting pitcher Mike Bumstead, who had retired 16 of 17 hitters since a Crabbe single in the first inning, walked Crabbe and Nelson Cruz to open the frame and was replaced by Jack Cassel, who was making his second appearance of the series. The right-hander walked Tony Zuniga to load the bases and Jeff Winchester followed with a two-run single to cut the visitors? lead to 4-2. John Vanden Berg bunted for a base hit to reload the bases and Enrique Cruz struck out for the first out of the inning before Vinny Rottino delivered a two-out, pinch-hit single to tie the game. Rottino had been hitless in his last 13 at-bats and knocked in his first two runs of the season. Southpaw Geoff Jones was brought on to face the lefty swinging Kennard Bibbs and fanned him for the second out of the inning. Gwynn then walked to reload the bases and Crabbe walked for the second time in the inning to force in Vanden Berg with the go-ahead run. Crabbe walked three times in a game for a second time this year and drove in his first two runs of the year. The Stars five-run rally was their second in as many days and the third time this year they had plated five runs in an inning, their largest output in a single frame. Mitch Stetter retired the BayBears in order in the eighth and recorded the first out in the ninth before giving way to Jerome Gamble, who came on to try to nail down his second save of the series. Nick Trzeskniak and Corey Smith singled before Ronnie Merrill doubled to left, just out of the reach of a diving Bibbs, to knock in the tying run. Luke Carlin was intentionally walked to load the bases but Gamble battled back to strike out Mike Richardson and Luis Cruz to keep the game tied at five. Trzesniak?s leadoff home run in the seventh inning had staked the BayBears to a 4-0 lead. It was his first of the year and just the fifth for the team, one more than the Stars league-low output of four long balls. The Stars begin a six-game road trip with a three-game set in Jackson, TN against the West Tennessee DiamondJaxx Friday night. Right-hander Khalid Ballouli takes the ball for the Stars against Jaxx lefty Raul Valdez. Coverage of the game gets underway at 6:20 p.m. central time on ESPN 1450 AM and via the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com. -

Final: Oklahoma (Rangers) 13, Nashville 10 Pretty wild couple of days in the Sooner State... Nashville Site Game Summary: The Oklahoma RedHawks scored eight unanswered runs to break an early tie and held off a late Nashville comeback to post a 13-10 victory over Nashville on Thursday evening at SBC Bricktown Ballpark, snapping the Sounds? two-game winning streak. Trailing by eight in the top of the ninth, Nashville whittled the deficit to three and had the potential tying run at the plate by the end of the contest. Rickie Weeks matched a career high by driving in five of the 10 Nashville runs during a 3-for-5 effort which included a home run for the second straight game as well as his league-leading fourth triple of the year. The Brewers? top prospect missed the cycle by one hit for the second time in the young season, finishing a double short of the milestone. Despite the loss, Nashville (8-7) retains a one-game lead over Omaha in the American Conference Northern Division. In the first three games of their high-scoring series, Nashville and Oklahoma have combined to score 70 runs, an average of 23 cumulative runs per contest. Oklahoma's 18 hits matched the most allowed in a single game by the Sounds this season. Six RedHawks batters turned in multi-hit efforts and four players produced multiple-RBI contests. Catcher Gerald Laird went 3-for-4 with a game-high four runs scored for the home team. Weeks put Nashville on the board in the top of the first inning with a one-out solo homer off former Sound John Wasdin. The roundtripper -- which left the entire ballpark -- was Weeks? third of the season and second in the last two games. Audio Link To Weeks HR: Check out the statement made just before the pitch -- neat... www.nashvillesounds.com/a...204-21.mp3 The host RedHawks responded with five runs against Sounds starter Andy Pratt as they batted around in the bottom of the frame to take a 5-1 advantage and knock the Nashville left-hander out after only one inning of work. With one out, five consecutive batters reached base, capped off by Manny Alexander?s bases-loaded, bases-clearing double. Nashville tied the contest with four runs in the top of the second. Kevin Orie started things with a one-out double, which extended his team-beat hitting streak to 10 games. After a pair of walks to load the bases, Dave Krynzel plated Orie with an RBI infield single to keep the sacks full before Weeks delivered again, driving in three runs with a bases-clearing triple to right to make it a 5-5 game. From that point, the Oklahoma offense took over and scored eight unanswered runs over the next seven innings against the Sounds bullpen to jump out to a 13-5 lead. Marshall McDougall broke the 5-5 tie in the bottom of the second with a sacrifice fly against Nashville reliever Clint Weibl. Jason Botts added a second run in the inning with a two-out RBI double. Ian Kinsler, who led Oklahoma with four RBIs in the contest, doubled the advantage in the fourth with a two-out, two-run double. The RedHawks plated two more in the sixth against Weibl on a McDougall RBI double and a Kinsler RBI single. Jason Conti provided the game?s second homer when he belted a two-out solo shot to right off Chad Paronto in the bottom of the seventh inning, the outfielder?s fifth tater of the season. Kinsler capped off the RedHawks? scoring with a two-out RBI single off Paronto in the bottom of the eighth, making it a 13-5 game. The Sounds, who had not scored since the second inning, put up quite a fight in the ninth against Oklahoma reliever Vladimir Nunez, opening the inning with five straight hits and batting around in the frame to reduce the lead to its final 13-10. Pat Borders and Steve Scarborough opened the ninth with consecutive singles before Krynzel added his second RBI of the game with an RBI double to bring in Borders. Weeks followed with another run-scoring knock, bringing in Scarborough with a single to left. Krynzel also scored on the play when Botts, the Oklahoma leftfielder, overran the ball for an error. After Jose Veras relieved Nunez, Prince Fielder greeted the right-hander with an RBI double off the left field wall to drive in Weeks and make it a 13-9 contest. The two-bagger extended the first baseman?s season-best hitting streak to four games. Brad Nelson followed by drawing a four-pitch walk. Veras tossed a wild pitch to move the runners to second and third, respectively, before retiring Corey Hart, the inning?s seventh batter, on a groundout for the first out. Orie drew a walk on a 3-2 wild pitch that sailed wide of Laird behind the plate, allowing Fielder to score and bringing the potential tying run to the plate with only one out in the person of Trent Durrington. Keith Stamler, the third RedHawks reliever to appear in the ninth inning, fanned Durrington and induced a lineout from Borders to end the threat. Wasdin (2-1) picked up the victory after allowing five runs in four hits over seven innings of work, while Weibl (0-2) took the loss after giving up six runs on nine hits in his 4 1/3 innings of work. Stamler picked up his second save after recording the final two outs. The teams wrap up the four-game series with a 7:05 PM finale on Friday evening. Right-hander Jose Capellan (0-0, 4.32) takes the hill for Nashville to face Oklahoma right-hander Jason Standridge (2-1, 2.75).
