Manatees site with a Ryan Anderson profile: www.manateesbaseball.com/...s.cgi?id=1 It?s been four years since Ryan Anderson has pitched an inning of competitive baseball. Nicknamed the ?Lil Unit? because of his similarities to Randy Johnson, Anderson has been struggling through major injuries over the last four years in the Seattle Mariners organization. After being released earlier this year by the Mariners, Anderson was signed by the Milwaukee Brewers and assigned here, to the Brevard County Manatees to make his comeback. Thursday night Anderson pitched one inning of perfect ball, striking out two Lakeland Tigers batters. Though this is far from the 162 strikeouts he recorded in 1999 with the New Haven Ravens, it?s a start and that?s all anyone, Anderson included, could ask for. The fireballing left hander was a first round selection in 1997 by the Mariners and was the 19th selection overall. During his senior year of high school Anderson struck out 133 of the 154 batters he faced while picking up three no-hitters in just seven starts all of which he completed. After being selected in the draft by Seattle he started his first full season with single-A Wisconsin. It was during this first full season that his injury problems began to creep up. After starting the first month pitching lights out he landed on the disabled list for a month with a strained left tricep. Even after sitting out from May 12 through June 9 he still finished the year with 152 strikeouts averaging 12.29 per nine innings. In 1999 he earned a promotion to AA-New Haven where he pitched his only full healthy season. He led the Eastern League with 162 strikeouts, though he missed most of July pitching in two All-Star games and then for Team USA. Even after racking up 13 losses in New Haven his pure pitching and strikeouts where enough to garner him another promotion in 2000, this time to AAA-Tacoma. He made 20 starts for Tacoma, though he did once again miss part of the year on the DL with a strained left shoulder. Anderson finished 2000 with 146 strikeouts in just 104.0 innings giving him his best ever ratio of 12.63 strikeouts per nine innings. After the season Baseball America listed Ryan as the top Pacific Coast League prospect. It was after 2000 that the major injuries would begin to plague Anderson. In 2001 he missed the entire season after tearing his rotator cuff in his left shoulder during Spring Training. 2002 saw him recovering from the surgery and then had another surgery in March of ?02 to clean up the injury. The following year was a near repeat of 2002. He spent the early part of the year rehabbing from the rotator cuff injury and then underwent exploratory surgery in June of 2003. He missed his fourth consecutive season in 2004 rehabbing from his surgery. But now it?s 2005 and Anderson looks to put all of his injuries behind him. He is with a new organization, with a new outlook on the game. As one ?Unit? comes to the end of his career we look for the new ?Unit? to try to fill his spot.

Link while active, text follows: www.dailymail.com/news/Sp...005052727/ Power earns split in long day at park Michael Dailey Charleston Daily Mail sportswriter Like most kids, West Virginia Power second baseman Hernan Iribarren and shortstop Alcides Escobar grew up dreaming of playing in the big leagues. Unfortunately for the Venezuelan natives, chasing that dream means leaving family and home behind for extended periods of time. That dream, as well as the time away from home and the loneliness it brings, is something that Power Manager Ramon Aviles knows all too well. Aviles, a native of Puerto Rico, chased the same dream as a middle infielder in the Boston Red Sox organization in the early 1970's. And while Aviles eventually reached pinnacle of the professional baseball as a member of the Philadelphia Phillies' 1980 World Championship team, his road to the Bigs was a steady uphill climb. "That happens to kids from Latin America," Aviles said after watching his team split a double-header with the Lake County Captains (27-20) at Appalachian Power Park on Thursday evening. A capacity crowd of 4,543 looked on as the Power (15-32) dropped a 7-4, 15-inning decision in game one before rebounding for a 7-3 win in the nightcap. "When I came up, for three years I was the only Latin player on the team," Aviles said. "So it was really tough on me. When you've got somebody that speaks the same language, it helps you because you've got someone to talk to." That camaraderie is exactly what Iribarren and Escobar are counting on to make their route to the majors a little less taxing than the one traveled by their manager. "Both of us being here made me happy because I'm so comfortable playing with him," said the 18-year old Escobar, through the translation of Power catcher Carlos Corporan. "And I hope we're the combination of the future with the Milwaukee Brewers." Iribarren is equally happy with Escobar's presence. "It's a lot easier because we've known each other for awhile," said the 20-year old Iribarren. "The relationship between Escobar and me is really good. When I found we were here together I was so happy. I feel comfortable because I'm with people that I know. "I miss my country and I miss my family, but I'm here for a job," Iribarren said. "I feel good because I'm doing what I like and that's playing baseball. That's why I'm here. I'm here to play baseball and to get to the big leagues." That comfort level has enabled the duo, who live with Power pitcher Yovani Gallardo and catcher Charlie Lozada, to worry less about cultural stresses and more on baseball. And that extra emphasis on baseball has paid dividends for both players' budding careers. Iribarren, a free agent signee in 2002, was named the Arizona League's MVP last season with the Arizona Brewers after batting .439 with nine triples with 36 RBI. He is currently batting .295 after going 1-for-9 in the twinbill, including a double and two RBI. Escobar, who signed as a non-drafted free agent in 2003, also enjoyed a solid season last year in batting .281, with a pair of homers and 26 RBI at Class A Helena. He raised his average to .297 with a 3-for-9 evening. "They have a chance to play in the big leagues," said Aviles of Escobar and Iribarren. "They have a future. I think that three years from now, they'll be ready for the big leagues. "They do a good job out there on the field. I don't have to move them around too much because they're very smart. "They work well together and the organization is going to try to keep them together as long as they can."

Final: Portland (Padres) 8, Nashville 4 Nashville Site Game Summary: PORTLAND ? The Nashville Sounds wrapped up their eight-game road trip to the Pacific Northwest on the short end of an 8-4 decision against the Portland Beavers on Thursday evening at PGE Park in the finale of a four-game series. With the loss, Nashville (23-25) finished its trip with a 2-6 mark and suffered its ninth defeat in the club?s last 12 contests. The Sounds managed only five hits on the evening, which was a forgettable outing for the heart of the order as the third through sixth hitters finished a combined 0-for-14. Every Portland starter, including pitcher Mike Bumstead, recorded a hit in the contest, led by right fielder Ben Johnson?s 3-for-4 effort that included a pair of home runs and a ground-rule double and former Sound Adam Hyzdu?s 3-for-4, two-RBI evening. Nashville second baseman Rickie Weeks returned from a two-day absence with a bang, spotting the Sounds a 2-0 lead with a two-run, first-inning homer off Bumstead. The blast, which scored Dave Krynzel who was hit by a pitch to lead off the ballgame, was Weeks? team-leading eighth of the season. Audio Link to Rickie Weeks' Two-Run HR: www.nashvillesounds.com/a...205-26.mp3 As was seemingly the case all series, the Beavers responded immediately to a Nashville outburst with one of their own in the bottom of the frame, using a pair of back-to-back longballs by J.J. Furmaniak and Ben Johnson to grab a 3-2 lead against Sounds starter Jeff Housman. Portland broke the game open in the third, tallying four runs to take a commanding 7-2 advantage. Johnson led off with his second homer of the contest, a solo shot to left that was his seventh four-bagger of the year. Bumstead, the Beavers? starting pitcher, delivered the big blow in the frame when he ripped a two-run, bases-loaded double to left-center for his first knock of the season. Housman (2-3) lasted only three innings for Nashville, surrendering seven runs on 10 hits, including three homers. He matched his season high with six strikeouts but drew a loss for the second consecutive start. The home run barrage continued in the fourth when Sounds shortstop Steve Scarborough belted a two-out, two-run homer off Bumstead to score Ryan Knox and pull Nashville within 7-4. The tater, which extended Scarborough?s hitting streak to a season-best five games, was the infielder?s seventh of the campaign, placing him second on the club behind Weeks; he hit only four home runs in 112 games for Triple-A Indianapolis in 2004. Like clockwork, the Beavers answered in the bottom of the frame against Nashville reliever Mike Meyers when Josh Barfield scored from first on Hyzdu?s single to right-center. The RBI was the second of the contest for the ex-Sound, who earlier notched a run-scoring double during the four-run Portland third. Nashville?s best chance to get back into the game came in the top of the fifth when the Sounds left the bases loaded against Portland reliever Angel Tovar. After the first two batters were retired, Knox doubled, Scarborough was hit by a pitch, and pinch-hitter Corey Hart drew a walk to fill the bags before Krynzel flew out to end the frame. Bumstead (1-1) earned his first victory of the season after allowing four runs on only three hits (two homers) over five innings of work for the Beavers. The Sounds travel back to Nashville on Friday to open a four-game Memorial Day weekend homestand against the New Orleans Zephyrs (AAA-Nationals). Right-hander Rick Helling (2-2, 4.79) will start the 7 p.m. series opener at Greer Stadium for Nashville and face a yet-to-be-determined Zephyrs hurler. www.starsboxscore.com/ Going, going, gone for GemollNot soon enough for the Mudcats, pitcher Logan Kensing will rejoin Carolina when the Mudcats go on the road tomorrow in Chattanooga for another one of 39 games they'll play against each other this season........ Not soon enough, for Craig Mulldrem, who will head back to Greensboro, pitched in and out of trouble for four innings, until Brandon Gemoll ended a scoreless battle with a three-run home run, his first of the season, after nearly slicing a ball out of the park on Mulldrem's first pitch...... With a 1-1 pitch, Gemoll sent a ball deep the opposite way to cap a four-run 5th for the Stars, effecting a split on the road with the Mudcats........ Mulldrem was 4-0 with a 2.23 ERA for the low-A Sally League Grasshoppers. After leaving six runners on base in the first three innings, including the bases full in the 3rd, Gemoll stepped up to the plate with two out......... Kennard Bibbs led off with a single up the middle, then stole his 10th base of the season..... Tony Gwynn, Jr. walked and Vinny Rottino singled to right to load the bases..... Ben Van Iderstine, who stranded those runners in the 3rd, hit into a force, scoring Bibbs to give the Stars a 1-0 lead...... Jeff Winchester flied out to right sending up Gemoll, who had knocked in just one run in his last 42 at-bats, and had not homered for the Stars since May 10 a year ago vs. Mobile. It was Gemoll's first home run vs. Carolina in his third year with the Stars. Wednesday night, the Stars were hurt by a wild pitch, when Dana Eveland uncorked one to send runners into scoring position, and set up Jeremy Hermida's game-winning single that beat the Stars in a come-from-behind 4-3 victory for Carolina........ Tonight, the worm turned for Carolina as an 8th inning wild pitch by Ross Wolf put Enrique Cruz into scoring position. Tony Zuniga then drove Cruz in on a single to left, giving the Stars a 5-3 lead......... The insurance run for the Stars came in the 9th after Van Iderstine hit a lead-off double to left, his 2nd of the night. Travis Ezi, who ran for Van Iderstine, scored after a sacrifice, on a single by Gemoll....... Gemoll, with his biggest game of the season, and his second three-hit game of the season, raised his average 16 points to .223. Dennis Sarfate became the Stars' first four-game winner...... Sarfate was 9th among Southern League ERA leaders going into this game....... Friday, the Stars return home to face the Tennessee Smokies. Matt Chico (1-7) will be matched opposite Manny Parra, who is 1-2, 2.74 in May. A good crowd is expected with the appearance of Rusty Walrus, Ken Giraffey, Jr., and Shaquille O'Seal ------- yes, I'm talking about The Zooperstars, my personal favorite as far as promotional attractions ago....... Come with your best voice when Harry Canary sings "Take Me Out to the Ballgame". Gwynn stole his 54th base as a Huntsville Star, placing him one in back of Jim Buccheri and Joel Wolfe for 9th place among the Stars all-time stolen base leaders....... Sarfate walked a season-high four hitters, but still has an impressive strikeout-walk ratio of 50:12....... Rottino, who struck out only three times in his last 55 at-bats coming into this game, struck out twice tonight...... The Stars have now made an error in each of their last nine games, approaching the record of 11 by a Milwaukee-affiliated Stars team in 2001....... The all-time record is 19 consecutive games set by the 1991 Stars. More from David Weiser on his stats page: www.starsboxscore.com/standing.html -

Final: Huntsville 6, Carolina (Marlins) 4 Huntsville Site Game Summary: Link for Brandon Gemoll photo, text follows -- www.huntsvillestars.com/s...newsId=612 Brandon Gemoll belted his first home run of the season and knocked in four runs to power Huntsville past Carolina 6-4 Thursday night in the final game of a four-game set at Five County Stadium. The Stars gained a split of the series and improved to 21-26 overall and 10-17 on the road, while Carolina fell to 29-17. The Stars won for just a third time in 14 road games against divisional foes and finished with two wins in eight games in Zebulon, NC. Huntsville starter Dennis Sarfate walked Jeremy Hermida to open the home fourth and James Shanks followed with a double to move Hermida to third, the second of his four hits on the night. Sarfate then reared back and struck out Michael Tucker, Frank Moore and Rex Rundgren in succession to end the inning and keep the game scoreless. The Stars stranded six runners in the first three innings before finally scoring in the fifth against Craig Molldrem, called up from low class-A ball to make an emergency start after the promotion of scheduled starter Yorman Bazardo to the Florida Marlins. The Stars loaded the bases with nobody out on singles by Kennard Bibbs and Vinny Rottino and a walk to Tony Gwynn, Jr. before Ben Van Iderstine?s fielder?s choice grounder forced Rottino at second and plated Bibbs with the game?s first run. Gemoll then launched his long ball to right field with two outs to push the lead to 4-0 and knock Molldrem out of the game. Sarfate carried that 4-0 edge into the sixth before allowing three runs and being taken out of the game. Jason Hill reached to open the inning on a throwing error by Enrique Cruz on a routine ground ball to shortstop. Hermida walked and Shanks followed with a triple to score both runners to cut the lead to 4-2. Hermida was the first batter walked by Sarfate to score since the Mudcats? Chris Bass back on April 8. Michael Tucker delivered Shanks with a sacrifice fly to trim the lead to one before Frank Moore reached second base on a bunt base hit and throwing error by Gemoll. The Stars brought Mitch Stetter into the game and he struck out pinch-hitter J.C. Muniz and Bass to end the inning. Tony Zuniga?s two-out, pinch-hit single scored Cruz in the eighth and a base hit by Gemoll plated pinch-runner Travis Ezi in the ninth to give the Stars a 6-3 lead. Zuniga knocked in his first run since May 14 at Montgomery with his second pinch-hit of the season. Matt DeWitt threw scoreless relief in the eighth and yielded a run in the ninth before fanning Hermida to end the game and nail down his fifth save of the season and second of the series. Sarfate became the first Stars pitcher to earn his fourth win by striking out eight, walking a season-high four and allowing only four hits. The Stars return home Friday to open a four-game series with Tennessee. Manny Parra, the Southern League Pitcher of the Week, will start for the Stars against the Smokies Matt Chico. Coverage of the game gets underway at 6:50 p.m. central time on ESPN 1450 AM and through the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com. Final, Game Two: West Virginia 7, Lake County (Indians) 3, scheduled for seven innings West Virginia Site Doubleheader Summary: POWER SPLIT 22 INNING DOUBLE DIPWITH THE CAPTAINS The West Virginia Power and Lake County Captains were scheduled to play a pair of seven inning ball games on Thursday night at Appalachian Power Park. The first game took 15 innings to complete with the Captains coming out on top 7-4 but the Power evened the score with a 7-3 victory in game two. Brian Barton started the scoring in game one with a two-run homer in the top of the third inning to give the Captains a 2-0 lead. In progress, Game One (still!): Lake County (Indians) 4, West Virginia 4, after 12 innings (was scheduled for only seven) The Power scored an unearned run to tie it in the bottom of the 7th, and pitching has dominated since then. Derek DeCarlo pitched very well after surrendering the 7th-inning lead, as described in the earlier post. Ben Stanczyk pitched himself out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the 12th. I hadn't listened to the opponents' audio of a Power game in full this season. Given this is a doubleheader, I'm getting my money's worth. The Lake County announcer, going solo, is excellent -- in voice, context, and knowledge. Nice job -- and the feed is coming in wonderfully clear, as opposed to say, Huntsville's feed, which has been a bit tinny all season. Depending on how long this one goes, we might see a position player throw at some point tonight. Robbie Wooley will need to be economical with his pitches in Game Two. -

In progress, Game One: Lake County 4 (Indians), West Virginia 3, heading to the bottom of the 7th Josh Baker absolutely pounded the strike zone in his six-inning stint -- nice! Derek DeCarlo, trying to protect a 3-2 Power lead, allowed two bloop hits to open the 7th (and final) inning, then a sac bunt and intentional walk loaded the bases. Potential double play ball -- but oh no, just beat it out -- tie game. Solid two-out base hit next as DeCarlo loses the lead. On to the bottom of the 7th -- stay tuned.... -

Link while active, text follows: www.theledger.com/apps/pb...002/SPORTS Extra-Inning Rally Extends Win Streak By DAVID YATES Lakeland Ledger Correspondent LAKELAND -- In their most improbable win of an improbable season, the Lakeland Tigers rallied for four runs in the bottom of the 10th inning and stunned Brevard County, 10-9, in Florida State League baseball on Wednesday night. Those in a Marchant Stadium crowd of 978 who left before the end of the game missed a series of dramatic hits by Scott Tousa, Garth McKinney, Juan Francia and Brent Clevlen, whose two-run single provided the tying and winning runs. "With the count 0-2, I was willing to give myself up any way I could to get that tying run home, but managed to get just enough wood on his curve to get the ball over the infield," said Clevlen, who got the game-winning hit off of Brevard reliever Brett Evert (0-2). Of the 213 professional baseball teams in North America, only Double-A West Tennessee (33-13) and the Chicago White Sox (33-14) have better records than Lakeland (32-14). The Tigers continue to hold a 3 1/2-game lead over Dunedin (2918) in the West division of the FSL. The Blue Jays staged their own miracle rally and slipped past Daytona, 11-10, Wednesday. The Manatees tallied five runs in the fifth inning on five hits, three Lakeland errors, and two wild pitches, one of which allowed Robby Deevers, a .189 batter, to reach first after striking out. Brevard County right-hander Tim Dillard, who has pitched much better this season than his 1-5 record indicates, limited Lakeland to six hits and one run over 6 1/3 innings. But the Tigers scored four times in the bottom of the seventh to tie. Tousa, Francia, and hot-hitting Kelly Hunt all singled in the inning, which included an untimely Manatee error. Lakeland forged ahead, 6-5 when Tousa and Danilo Sanchez belted back-to-back doubles in the eighth, but Drew Anderson homered off Tiger closer Chris Homer to tie the game in the ninth. Brevard then scored three more runs off Homer in the 10th but that just set the stage for Lakeland's dramatic comeback. The Tigers and Manatees will conclude their four-game series tonight, when Preston Larrison (0-0, 7.36 ) is expected to oppose Brevard southpaw Ryan Anderson (0-0, 0.00). Larrison will be making his second start after coming off the disabled list last week. The highly-touted but injury-plagued 6-foot-11-inch Anderson will be making his first start in more than four years. -

Huntsville Site Game Summary: Jeremy Hermida singled home the tying and winning runs in the seventh inning and Jerrod Fuell worked out of a bases loaded jam in the ninth to preserve Carolina?s 4-3 win over Huntsville Wednesday night in the third game of a four-game set at Five County Stadium. The Mudcats have won the last two nights to improve to 29-16 overall and 6-1 at home against the Stars, who dropped to 20-26 overall and 5-10 in one run games. The Stars have lost 11 out of 13 road games to divisional opponents and are 9-17 overall away from home. Ben Van Iderstine led off the ninth inning for Huntsville against Jerrod Fuell, who took over for winner Kevin Cave to start the inning, and reached second base when shortstop Robert Andino could not cleanly field his ground ball. Travis Ezi came on to pinch-run and moved to third base when Kennard Bibbs dropped down the Stars second sacrifice bunt of the night. Pinch-hitter Brandon Gemoll and Callix Crabbe walked to load the bases before Tony Gwynn, Jr. struck out swinging and Vinny Rottino grounded out to end the game. Fuell earned his third save in his league-high 22nd appearance and Cave celebrated his 25th birthday by retiring all six hitters he faced. The Stars led 3-2 in the seventh before Carolina tallied to take the lead for good. Rex Rundgren led off with a walk and was forced at second on a ground ball off the bat of Frank Moore, who had entered the game in the top of the inning as part of a double-switch. James Shanks singled and moved Moore to second before Andino struck out for the second out of the inning. Stars? starter Dana Eveland uncorked a wild pitch that advanced the runners before Hermida sent a ground ball past a diving Crabbe into right field for a base hit that scored both runners to make it 4-3 Mudcats. Eveland was taken out and replaced by David Bradley, who struck Jason Hill to end the inning. Michael Tucker led off the home second with a double and scored one out later on a two-base hit by Chris Bass, who knocked in his third run of the series. Enrique Cruz booted a ground ball off the bat of Andino with two outs and the bases loaded that allowed Bass to score to put Carolina on top, 2-1. Rex Rundgren, who had singled, rounded third base and slipped and was thrown out by Cruz on the same play for the final out of the frame. Cruz?s one-out home run in the fourth, off the scoreboard in left-center field, tied the game at two. It was his fifth of the season and third of the series and third allowed by Mudcats starter Luke Lockwood, who was making his third start since joining the rotation after Logan Kensing was called up to join the Florida Marlins. The Stars moved ahead 3-2 in the fifth when Eveland doubled for his first hit of the season, moved to third on a Crabbe sacrifice and scored on a base hit by Gwynn, who picked up his first hit of the series. Eveland, who joined Manny Parra as the only Stars pitchers to score a run this season, allowed four runs, three earned, on eight hits and a pair of walks. The southpaw struck out six and suffered the loss to fall to 3-4. The series concludes Thursday night with right-hander Dennis Sarfate getting the starting assignment against Mudcats? Yorman Bazardo. Coverage of the game gets underway at 6:00 p.m. central time on ESPN 1450 AM and through the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com. -

Final: Nashville 5, Portland (Padres) 3 Much needed victory! Nashville Site Game Summary: PORTLAND ? Pinch-hitter Brad Nelson ended Nashville?s five-game losing streak in dramatic fashion, belting a one-out, three-run homer off PCL saves leader Brad Baker in the top of the ninth inning on Wednesday afternoon at PGE Park to erase a 3-2 deficit and propel the Sounds to a 5-3 victory in the third game of a four-game series. The longball, Nelson?s fourth of the season, capped a four-run Nashville ninth and was the first pinch-hit blast by a Sounds player this season. The victory was the Sounds? tenth last at-bat win of the year as well as the club?s seventh come-from-behind victory in a game in which Nashville trailed in the seventh inning or beyond. After Corey Hart opened the ninth with a single, recently-added Sounds catcher Mike Rivera recorded his first Nashville RBI in dramatic fashion, drilling a run-scoring double off the wall in left to make it a 3-2 game. Ryan Knox followed with a bunt single to put runners on the corners with none out. After Steve Scarborough struck out, Nelson delivered his game-winning shot while batting for pitcher Jeff Bennett. Audio Link to Nellie's Game-Winner: www.nashvillesounds.com/a...205-25.mp3 Nashville jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on Kevin Orie?s RBI single, which scored Trent Durrington. The Aussie infielder had singled and moved to second when Prince Fielder was hit by a pitch. Durrington continued his recent hot hitting by pacing the Nashville offense with a 2-for-4 effort. In addition, he stole his team-leading 14th base of the year. Portland tied it in the fifth during an inning that included four singles against Sounds right-hander Ben Hendrickson, none of which left the infield. Former Sound Adam Hyzdu tied the contest when he came home on J.J. Furmaniak?s two-out RBI single to third. Beavers first baseman Jon Knott propelled the home team to a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth with a leadoff home run to left off Hendrickson, his team-leading eighth roundtripper of the year. Ben Johnson tacked on an insurance run for Portland in the bottom of the eighth with a one-out solo homer off Bennett. It was the outfielder?s fifth blast of the season. Fielder saw his seven-game hitting streak snapped following an 0-for-3 afternoon for the Sounds. Bennett (1-0) earned his first win of the year after allowing one run in his two frames of work. Baker (1-3) took the loss after permitting the four-run outburst in the ninth. Chad Paronto tossed a perfect bottom of the ninth, including two strikeouts, to notch his third save of the year for Nashville. Both starting pitchers performed well but took no-decisions following the late Nashville comeback. Portland?s Clay Hensley missed a chance at his first victory as a result of Baker?s blown save. His solid outing included one run allowed on five hits with seven strikeouts over seven innings. Hendrickson took a no-decision for Nashville following a strong performance, allowing two runs on six hits over six innings. The Sounds will shoot for a series split when the teams wrap up the four-game set at 9:05 p.m. on Thursday evening. Left-hander Jeff Housman (2-3, 4.17) takes the hill for Nashville to face Portland right-hander Mike Bumstead (0-1, 3.95). The more, the merrier! He didn't resume pitching until showing up for a summer open tryout organized by the Milwaukee Brewers. That's when he learned he was throwing better than 90 mph. You see these "open tryouts", hosted by Brewer scouts in their territory, announced from time to time. Very cool that some talent was not only identified but eventually drafted and signed via one of these sessions.
