  1. I knew a pastor with the last name Bader, and he actually chose to go by Pastor Bader. Middle School kids couldn't get enough.
  2. Whatever your "voice" happens to be. Our last Brewers writer generally liked to rip on the Brewers, but in a way that a fan rips on the manager for being an idiot, etc. Most of our writers take a pretty positive tone, but each has their own style. Being able to find humorous things on the internet is probably just as valuable as being a good writer...
  3. So you think you're funny? Bugs & Cranks (www.bugsandcranks.com), a top baseball humor site, is looking for a Brewers writer. You'll need to post 2-3 times per week about the Brewers. Our content focuses on humor, so game recaps, sabermetrics and lineup analysis aren't what we're going for. If you're a reader of Deadspin, With Leather, Bill Simmons, Chuck Klosterman and their ilk, you'll understand what we're looking for - sports-related humor. We pay based on revenue sharing, which means you won't get rich (unless you own the Marlins). It'll open some doors and get you some exposure, but you really have to be in it mostly for fun. Experience doing some blogging and being internet savvy is pretty helpful, but not required. If you think you've got what it takes, send an e-mail with a couple sentences about yourself and a sample post about the Brewers to: agodson@bugsandcranks.com. Our panel of reviewers will take a look at it and get back to you within a week or two.
  4. I'll probably stop in a few places around noon just to see if they have it. Anyone have any plans for their "Road to the Show"? Or are we a franchise crowd? I had a good time last year with Road to the Show so will probably make a new character....on PS3 this time!
  5. They have the releases down to the hour now? If that's true that blows my plan to pick it up while I'm out for lunch.
  6. Jamie there are lots of them, including Strat-o-matic itself. Out of the Park, which Brian links is the class of the crowd, especially if you like detail and are reasonably savvy with a computer. Baseball Mogul is decent, too.
  7. Study Abroad, 100%. If you don't, there will come a time when you wish you did. Take the opportunity now.
  8. I was partial to Griffey as a kid, but 3DO's High Heat Series for PC was really good. I'm very much looking forward to "the show" this year. If you're waxing nostalgic about video games, check out this series
  9. Whatever you do....don't touch the bulb with your hands. The oil from your fingers will ruin it. My idiot college roommate found that out the hard way about 3 times before he got wise. For an old projector, somewhere dark sounds like a winning idea.
  10. I have a PS3 for the same reason....basically just for MLB the Show. I own college basketball 2k8, which is fun, too. I had call of duty 4, which I liked a lot. I'm not a big first person shooter guy, but it was a lot of fun. The campaign is pretty short and multiplayer mode is fun, but I pretty much get slaughtered by all the teenagers that play it 24 hours a day. I beat the campaign then sold it so I can buy The Show in a few weeks. I recommend it to anyone, though.
  11. www.bugsandcranks.com -- Easily the best baseball site on the web, though I might be a bit biased. www.deadspin.com -- best sports website on the interweb www.withleather.com www.thebiglead.com www.ballhype.com www.mlbtraderumors.com www.facebook.com Just a few to get started each day.....
  12. Confessions of an Economic Hitman -- John Perkins .... great book.
  13. More important than what you major in will be getting some internship experience with a minor league ballclub. Work in the ticket office, do on-field promotions, etc. A lot of it depends what you want to do for the ML club. I had some friends start in ticket sales and work there for a few years. It's hard work for not a lot of pay, but if you love baseball it might be fun. There are a lot of jobs with the clubs that are sort of like "regular" jobs, accounting, sales, account management, so if you're looking for that angle, pick something you like and are good at. If you're looking to get into scouting/player development/etc., those are really, really tough to get into if you didn't play the game at the minor league level at the very least. The best shot at those would be to get a MBA/JD degree with a focus in Sports Management (Marquette has a good program) and work into it from the legal/business end. Again, having experience with teams at any level will help you tremendously there, too.
  14. James Shields had a great year....he's the master of the modified circle change. People think the gyroball is tough to hit, the MCC actually exists. I'm shocked that none of the 3TO lovers here saw Cust coming...he broke the record (for qualifiers) for greatest 3TO season ever with 59%
  15. If you're going beserk watching the Cubs in the playoffs, it's much better if you play the Cubs drinking game. My predictions: Cubs over Diamondbacks in 4 Phillies over Rockies in 5 Yankees over Indians in 5 Red Sox over Angels in 6 Red Sox over Yankees in 7 Cubs over Phillies in 7 Red Sox over Cubs in 4
  16. First Job -- picking Strawberries at a strawberry farm when I was 14....just some middle schoolers and migrant workers.... fifty cents a pint. Dirtiest Job -- Toss up between detasseling corn (4 summers) or washing dishes at a Boston Market. Detasseling was muddy and wet, BM was just plain disgusting. I was a paid EMT/Firefirghter, too, which led to some grossness you don't even want to hear about.
  17. The Cubs would seem to have a bevy of options other than Monroe, but optimistically think he can be the Monroe that mashed 28 dingers last year. Jason Kendall doesn't suck for them, but who knows. Here's my take: http://www.bugsandcranks.com/chicago-cubs/hooray-another-******-outfielder/
  18. I am pretty much shocked and dismayed that you have to deal with idiocy like this, Brian. I'd seen that shirt (Jewboys) before and found it offensive and it's from a t-shirt company that makes their distasteful living selling t-shirts of an offensive nature. You took the right steps. He's a complete idiot. Thanks for putting up with this crap and keeping this site free of the degenerative hate-messages that perpetrate many forums.
  19. I went to US Cellular a few years ago not knowing it was "bring your dog to the park" day. I said to my buddy, "I had no idea there were so many blind people that like baseball." That's still one of the dumbest (and most successful) promotions I can think of.
  20. Not sure if anyone else saw, but the Cubs didn't make the obvious move and call up Pie. Instead....it's Corey Patterson's little brother Eric. That can't bode well for their confidence in their top prospect. It does mean an outfield of Floyd, Jones, Murton for the next month. Link: http://bugsandcranks.com/chicago-cubs/cubs-call-up-patterson-not-patterson/
  21. I've done it.....I haven't had cable since '04 and it's been fine. I miss the easy updates of sportscenter, but I'm better off for not being subjected to ESPN in general. What really killed me was not having internet. That lasted about 3 months, which was far too long. I paid more in library parking tickets during those 3 months than internet would have cost me. Without TV I go to more games...which is cool. I usually do something productive, but sometimes wish I had it. I watch a lot of shows online...everything from ABC, comedy central and a bunch of other stations are available the day after it's on, so you can watch stuff if you're really up for it. For me, no TV was a great move....no internet [shudder]....
  22. The fact that Phillips made these comments should be enough to stop any rational discussion.
  23. 1. Barry Bonds 2. Gary Sheffield 3. Roger Clemens Everyone else I can pretty much tolerate.
  24. Is Manny Parra getting a start? Why is that again? I'd love to see it if it's happening, but that's the first I've heard of it.
  25. Pujols' rookie season is probably the best of all time (for hitters). This website tracks current rookies compared to Pujols as a rookie and calls it the "SLP index" extrapolater.wordpress.co...ke-pujols/ FYI, Ryan Braun is at a perfect 1000, meaning he's currently on pace to have the greatest rookie season in history (for a hitter).
