  1. I can't recommend Joomla highly enough. Tons of good information in the forums / how-to's at Joomla.org. When I got stuck, I hired someone from Joomlancers for $20 and it was taken care of in an hour. You can make great-looking, feature rich sites for nothing. Again, highly recommend.
  2. He won the Gold Glove last year. Say what you will about the GG selection process, but it's fair to say he doesn't stink defensively. The 'rats were right to trade McLouth...he's probably at his peak value right now, though somehow I think they could've gotten a bit more for him.
  3. JobsinGreenBay.com is the best in the area....you might also check the newspaper website and indeed.com, simplyhired.com, etc.
  4. Tell a story instead of speaking in generalities. Everyone loves stories about their loved ones and getting some knowing looks and laughs can be very comforting at that difficult moment.
  5. I've got a pretty similar situation -- bought some Citigroup on a whim at $1 -- and it's about the same situation. Ultimately, I've decided to hold onto it to see what happens. It's a pretty small part of my investments and if it goes to zero it's not a huge deal. The possibility that in a few years it's at $10-20 could be pretty cool. So it sort of depends on your risk tolerance along with what the financial statements tell you. Best of luck!
  6. For keeping track of things, I can't say enough good things about Mint.com. Since about 95% of my spending is done by debit card, check, or automatic payment it categorizes it based on their data (e.g. Pick & Save = Groceries) and show where you spend your money. Pretty cool. "Can you get 10% right now?" -- Not in anything without a ton of risk, and it's never guaranteed. Still, if there was ever a time to start investing for the long term, the time is now if you've got it.
  7. Doubling up is a solid idea...essentially you itemize your taxes every other year. For what it's worth, given your age, you could probably stand to be a bit more aggressive with your investments. I'm not a financial planner, but given your situation (which is pretty similar to mine) I'd prioritize your extra $ like this: 1) Accumulate 3-6 months of "cash" (CDs, etc.) for emergencies 2) Invest the max up to the employer match 3) Invest the 5k max in aggressive stocks/mutual funds within a Roth IRA 4) If there's anything left, either contribute more to the pre-tax 401k or make the early payments on the mortgage. Paying the mortgage off early isn't a terrible idea, especially if it's worth it to you in peace of mind. Mathematically, though, it's not going to be your best investment in the long term especially compared to a tax-advantaged account. Just my $.02.
  8. This is a class is Win-Win for you. It's nice that you're concerned about him not being upset, but in the end it won't matter that much. 1) If you get the job, you have a job in your field and no longer have need for a job, nor really a reference from the parks department to get a job 2) If you don't get the job, you have a job at the Park & Rec. Go get the job.
  9. It was pretty average...I probably won't watch again. ABC's Better off Ted is sort of similar, but was funnier. The main character definitely seems like a "poor man's Michael Scott". Maybe if it flops we'll get Fire Joe Morgan back.
  10. I had it last year and didn't watch nearly as many games as I thought I would. I'm not even sure why, but I just didn't use it enough to justify the expense again. You can't get Brewers games, but last year I watched a healthy share of them by skirting the system. Essentially, I had someone with an out of town credit card pay for it and then used a Proxy IP address (usually in a foreign country) so that my IP wouldn't say I was in Milwaukee. I thought that was a great idea, but it would often take me half an hour to find a decent proxy server that was working fast enough and I'd give up. Anyway, that's my feedback...I think if I didn't live in MKE and couldn't get the games through cable or attend in person it would be worth it. But being local, I'm just going to save the extra $ and buy some tickets.
  11. We had friends from Boston/NY in town last week in a similar situation. Went on the Lakefront Brewery tour, Milwaukee Art Museum and Ice Skating at the Petitt, all of which they enjoyed.
  12. Good call on taking the GMAT early....I took it during my senior year as an undergrad and did really well. I start at Grad School for 3 years, but having those scores really helped. I also second having a job before/during getting your degree. Companies will shy away from the big $$$ they see when they think MBA if you don't have any experience.
  13. I don't know much about the program at UWM, but I was in both the Marquette & UW-Whitewater MBA programs so I can tell you some about that. If you're looking to just get through it and get a piece of paper, UW-W is a good choice -- also much cheaper. I did hear that they may discontinue some of their Waukesha classes, so keep that in mind. I would have nothing but good things to say about the Marquette program, but it's nice to have an employer foot the bill.
  14. If you're a mid to high-level sales professional, the service may well be worth the $. There is a lot of difference in resumes that shine and those that don't, and it's not spell-check. There's also a lot of difference in "your resume isn't impressive" and "your work history isn't impressive". The former is fixable short-term, but the latter will take much longer to repair, even with a great wordsmith.
  15. When I had WaMu, I didn't know they did this, but their balances listed "available cash", which is $500 more than you have in your account. I didn't realize this, but when you withdraw below your actual cash, they'd charge like $30 per transaction. So I went to an ATM and under "balance" it would say $600, then I got about $300 in overdraft charges as I used my debit card for parking, lunch, etc. Not a happy customer.
  16. I've played an Ibanez for years and had great luck with it. They're good quality at a midrange price.
  17. I had WaMu when when I lived in Cali and they're on my top 10 list of companies to never, ever do business with. I do most everything with ING Direct. Their saving accounts pay solid rates and the checking account pays slightly lower rates, but has decent features. I like the feature of writing checks online...I type in the info, they mail it. I haven't been inside an actual bank in years. That said, my wife does have a Credit Union account that we use to deposit checks, which happens about twice a year. All my accounts are linked (ING, Credit Union, Paypal, retirement, etc.) so I just push money around the web and never have to deal with tellers. If you have to choose between BoA and Wells Fargo, I'll state that BoA is a fee monster, or at least was a few years ago. Schwab is getting into the banking side, too, with their main draw being refunding all ATM fees while giving 3%+ APY. Just my thoughts.
  18. I like the "most visited" tab, but otherwise it seems like nothing special. And like a lot of Google things, it seems a bit "cartoonish". Not sure if that's just me, though.

    Cuil

There are two links on the first page, one of which is "about cuil", which is a broken link. Not a good start. I am also mystified as to why the 3 column search results seemed like a good idea. I'm up for trying new things, but this is an awful, awful search engine.
  20. I'm enjoying NCAA '09 so far, despite the roster bug. If anyone else is playing, I'd be interested in trying out the online dynasty with some folks. Badgers are #9 and PJ Hill runs over everything, so it's a good time.
  21. I didn't ask my in-laws because I didn't care. If they said "no", I would still have asked her anyway. I agree with the political capital argument, thought, and seriously considered it just for formality's sake. My advice would be to ask for their "blessing and support" rather than "permission" or a blanket "just lettin' you know". It gives them the hint that you'd love for them to be behind your marriage, but that they don't control their daughter, either. Just my $.02.
  22. I had it done when I was in high school. I caught an elbow in the face playing basketball so just opted for the "all-in-one" readjustment plus septoplasty. I felt miserable for a week, being pretty much homebound. I think I nearly finished an entire season of High Heat baseball in a week.
  23. Yeah, I was a bit disappointed, too, though you had to see it coming. After the book and his recent gigs with some really major publications, it was only a matter of time. He's really handed the site over to Daulerio, Chandler and the rest of his crew over the last few months anyway. I'll still be a reader. I'd also recommend his book to any sports fan.
  24. Cedar Falls will be good to you and you should find a one bedroom place pretty cheap provided you don't want to live right next to UNI. As far as places to eat, it's been a few years since I've lived in Waterloo/CF, but here are a few tips, depending on what you're style is and what you're trying to accomplish: Peppers -- Sports bar that is probably the most popular in town. Will prove to your girlfriend that you haven't totally left civilization Becks -- This is where I go to watch games if I'm in the area -- Easy to find sports bar with decent food and usually a good crowd If you're looking for somewhere not a sports bar: Montage -- Main Street in Cedar Falls is your best bet to convince her that it's not a "cow town". Lots of restaurants, coffee shops and bars. Montage is a new place with offbeat stuff on the menu if she's into that. Brown Bottle -- Good local Italian place. Been around forever and has really good italian food. Old Broom Factory -- Good food, but probably a bit older crowd than you're looking for. Wherever you go, be sure you run her through Main Street in Cedar Falls and take a drive down Hudson Road in Cedar Falls past the Uni-Dome and McCleod Center...two giant sports complexes ease the feeling that it's the middle of nowhere. Good luck, man!
  25. I'm actually from the Waterloo, IA area so any questions you have, I can answer. If you want to zap an e-mail (agodson@bugsandcranks.com) about the company, where to live, what to do, etc. I can give you pretty decent advice. I'd guess you're getting a job at Deere, which is a very good company to work for. There are a few others, but that's where many people work. As a young person, I'd actually recommend living in Cedar Falls instead of Waterloo. Northern Iowa is there so it's a college town and will probably be a better fit. I make it to W'loo several times a year and it's a decent city. It's a lot like every other city in the midwest with about 100,000 people -- think Janesville or Racine and you're pretty much on track. The upside is that it's exceedingly affordable. You could buy a mansion there right now on a starter salary. And you're right about the drive....it's bad. I had a car without a radio in HS and used to read Sports Illustrated while I drove on Hwy 20 in Iowa....it's straight, 4 lanes, and there's no traffic....zzzz...... I like living in MKE okay, but if I didn't live here I'd probably live in Cedar Falls. Hit me up if you want some specific advice.
