  1. Tim Lincecum for the Giants throws pretty well for a right-handed midget. I'm not fan of Inman's, but just saying....
  2. Trading Inman, Thatcher and G-man doesn't matter a bit. There's no room for them and fans tend to overvalue prospects. The only question is whether Linebrink will produce as a Brewer. If he does, this is a great deal. If not, Nate Silver looks smart.
  3. To clear up the draft picks: Linebrink will be a Type A so the Brewers will get. 1. A sandwich pick between the first and second round. It's likely this will be high. (Last year there were 34 sandwich picks, 16 of which were type A's, which go first.) 2. A compensatory pick from the team that signs Linebrink. It will be a first rounder unless the pick would be a top 15 pick (which are protected). Then it would be a second-round pick. Given the economics of baseball, top relievers are usually signed by high-payroll teams that finish well. A good guess would be the picks being somewhere around what the Dodgers got for Julio Lugo, #20 & #39. Just an FYI since there were some questions about the picks. The Crew could sign Linebrink long term, too.
  4. He's having a baby.....well, not him, his wife is having a baby. So he'll be there on Friday.
  5. There's a change of mindset that has to take place. Brewer fans are so used to going for "moral victories" like winning trades, etc. The opportunity is there for "actual victories" this year. The Brewers lost two games in the past week because of Balfour. The bullpen was a need. This is what teams in playoff races do. They gave up Inman, a possible 4-5 starter, a minor league lefty reliever (who is 25), and a guy in the low minors. Here's the crux -- the Brewers don't need any of those. The rotation won't have holes for a while -- they can't even find a spot for Villy or Gallardo right now, let alone another young #5 starter. If Thatcher was ready to be the man, he'd have supplanted Shouse by now. You have to give something up to get something. Don't forget, if Linebrink leaves, the Brewers will have a first rounder and a sandwich pick to.....draft a replacement for Inman and Garrison.
  6. I'm a pretty loyal PC guy myself. I know how to use them and how to fix them when something goes wrong. Plus, with engineering software, it may be good to have a PC. I know you can run some Windows stuff on Mac, but I've never had much success with it, though it's been years since I've tried. I've bought a few laptops over the years (for work and pleasure). You can get a decent deal on new Dells. You can find coupon codes all over the net or just wait for sales (usually at the end of the quarter). I got my last (personal) laptop for $688 18 months ago and I'll probably have it for another 2 years before I replace it. Just my two cents.
  7. There won't be much happening at the deadline. The price has gotten too high for teams to sell. A lot of teams would just rather have the picks: bugsandcranks.com/the-clu...ined-july/
  8. The announcers to a game matter -- a lot. I also love a good story, which is why Bob Uecker is so great. But an annoying announcer can just ruin the game. If you need evidence, try watching the Home Run Derby with Berman, Morgan, and Dusty Baker. Voice matters, too. You're spot on with Vin Scully and I'd add Jon Miller to that list, too. Guys like Joe Morgan ruin games for me. I'll watch on mute or not watch at all. He's a pompous ass that won't admit he's wrong, even when the video replays clearly show he's wrong. There are few guys that I despise, but Joe Morgan is one of them. Tim McCarver sucks, too. (www.shutuptimmccarver.com) Oh, and try listening to Ron Santo on the radio sometime. Trust me, it matters.
  9. A guy that comes to mind is Matt Murton. He's inexplicably in AAA for the Cubs because they couldn't find a spot for him in the OF. His .297/.365/.444 (last year) would be a decent fit. Trading with the Cubs doesn't seem likely, though.
  10. I've always liked Costas, and I generally dislike announcers. I don't mind him being "preachy" because he stands up for what he thinks and offers a well-reasoned opinion. He's actually very funny, too, which doesn't often come out in the studio gigs he does, but he used to host late-night comedy TV. It's a shame he doesn't do more baseball. Really good announcers like Costas, Al Michaels, and Steve Stone don't do enough games, while blowhards like McCarver, Morgan and Berman do far too many.
  11. If you can, take as much of the subsidized Stafford Loans as possible. The interest is deferred until 6 mo. after you graduate and even then can be deferred w/o interest if you do grad school or americorps, etc. The rates are far better than you'll get on any commercial loan. I would recommend getting a used car you can afford. A lot of your classmates will run out and buy new cars right after college as some sort of "made it" badge. You'll be much better off financially if you resist the temptation and buy a solid used car. Don't fret too much about being it debt. I hate it, just like everyone else, but it's a fact of life. Someday you'll have a mortgage and be in debt anyway. As long as you manage your debt wisely (i.e. not credit cards) it can be useful and necessary to taking the next steps.
  12. I'll go ahead and agree that buckets should have been allowed. Here's a take on the issue: Defending Your Right to Wear a Container as a Hat
  13. I read tons of sports blogs. Some of them are ridiculously funny. Here are the best: www.deadspin.com www.withleather.com www.bugsandcranks.com www.freedarko.com kissmesuzy.blogspot.com www.thebiglead.com
  14. Can anyone confirm that they did not allow buckets in tonight?
  15. Ryan Braun Smells like Pujols.....in a good way. extrapolater.wordpress.co...yan-braun/
  16. Here's a fine article admiring Braun's work so far this season. One of my favorite writers from Chicago Sports Review: extrapolater.wordpress.co...yan-braun/
  17. I've never smoked, but I've heard great things about Chantix, a drug that can help. Some people hate the idea of pills, but it's not really different in principle than patches, gum, etc. Just a thought.
  18. I'm talking about incoming links, which are a great source of traffic and how most things are measured in the blogosphere. If you write a popular post, you might get linked by other bloggers which will bring readers to your site. Hopefully they'll like what they see and come back. Plus, it feels good to have people reading and linking you because your stuff is good. The "measures" that I pay attention to (besides basic traffic #'s) are Technorati Authority and Ballhype Rankings (ballhype.com/mlb/blogs). The # and size of links matter for these so a link from Deadspin is more valuable than a link from BrewCrewBall and so on. Usually only post links count, not blogroll links. Ballhype and its kin help get exposure so you can get links. All the big bloggers are surfing there and looking for stuff to link, so you might get lucky and grab a big link that can bring hundreds or thousands to your site. Be careful...blogging is addictive.
  19. Jay -- The blog looks good. I highly recommend checking out ballhype and getting listed there to help get you some links and a bit of traffic. Just an FYI for anyone that writes/reads blogs, a new Packers blog is going to launch and is lookig for a lead writer if anyone here thinks they might be up for it. My plate is full, though I'll probably contribute occasionally to the blog. Here's the skinny: milwaukee.craigslist.org/...83146.html
  20. As stated, there's some statistical analysis to be done here, but when I hear people use the phrase, I get a definite impression in my mind. For me, it means that the team doesn't do the "little things" very well. They don't steal bases, go first to third, bunt, move runners, etc. in order to manufacture runs. They don't win the games when they get outhit, etc. For some, notably the A's of yore, this is a conscious decision to just get on base and hope for the long ball. Others just evolve that way and that's what a team's personality becomes. Note that the Cubs in the rearview haven't hit a home run in about 10 games, the last being Aramis' walk-off against us.
  21. Jason, I could probably list advice for you pages and pages long, but we'll start with the basics. If you have specific questions, be sure to ask. I've been blogging for about 6 months and have had a pretty good run of it. I'm about to launch into my third project, so I've had to think about a lot of these things the last few days. 1. Decide what you want your blog to be. Humor? Statistical Analysis? A fan community? You need to find your niche and stick to it. Writing a piece full of fart jokes today and then dropping a sabermetrics piece tomorrow will only confuse your readers. 2. Register your blog @ technorati, google, ballhype, striketwo.net, StumbleUpon, and every niche site you can find. Every bit helps. 3. Write great content, design a clean layout. 4. Be consistent -- develop regular habits for posting, twice a week, once a day, whatever. 5. Your first few weeks you might be the only one reading, but that's okay. Develop some content for people to read. 6. Links, links, links. Once you find your voice and determine your niche, you'll know what kind of links to seek. Depending on what you decide, I can help you with some basics. Ballhype is a great place to fish for links. That's the basics. If start it and write something good, let me know and I'll link it....you'll get a decent technorati/ballhype jump. ajgodson [at] hotmal [dot] com
  22. Here's a great take on the Seitzer, Dent, Rickey carosel: bugsandcranks.com/the-clu...oundtable/
  23. All those that despise the Cubbies out there should enjoy this: bugsandcranks.com/chicago...t-of-wine/ "On the night Sosa?s bat exploded for all to see, officials from Major League Baseball notified the Cubs organization during the game that they had one hour to get rid of any other corked bats of Sosa?s in the team?s clubhouse before they came down to inspect his arsenal of bats. More than 70 marked corked bats then were extricated quickly by Cubs personnel from the clubhouse, about a third of them belonging to other players."
  24. This all happened a few months ago, but I've got a lot to say about it, so I'll drop a few here: I don't blame With Leather a bit -- I've chatted with Matt about it and I really believe he handled it all appropriately. He went on TV and talked about it and explained his views. This post probably helps: www.withleather.com/post.phtml?pk=2994 Allison is an athlete and while she may not relish the fame, the fact that she's attractive wasn't really a secret to most people and probably wouldn't stay a secret forever. The story was confined to a few thousand sports blog readers until her family did the story with the Washington Post. Only then did it become national news. Let that sink in. Yes, men are pigs and the internet doesn't help. But is censorship really the answer? There are certainly some sickos out there, but being personally responsible is probably really the best answer. Just my $.02 on the issue.
  25. While a good observation, this doesn't tell us much. Zambrano -- it tells us he'll get better, which we should already know. Lilly -- has spent his entire career in the AL, much of it in the AL East. I expected his ERA to drop between .5 and 1 runs this year Marshall & Hill -- Very young lefties. Of course they'll get better. Marquis -- Marquis isn't as good as his ERA this year, nor is he as bad as his ERA last year. I'd expect his ERA to settle in right about the midpoint of his current & career numbers. The Cubs bullpen will shake out, too. Eventually Carlos Marmol will get hit and expect Eyre & Howry to straighten things out a bit.
