Are we too worried about losing Willy's power?

Honestly, I'm much more worried about losing Willy's clubhouse presence than his power. I'm guessing Yelich and Hoskins will rebound and Chourio will take the next step. -
I think it's more than just betting against his team. He was apparently deep in debt to bookies who I'm sure wouldn't have thought twice about asking for favors from an MLB manager that would help them make even more money. If Rose bet on the Thursday game he was managing, how do you think he managed the Wednesday game? What he allegedly did, if allowed or even overlooked, would destroy the credibility of the entire sport. Sadly, he earned his lifetime ban. I'm in favor of him being inducted posthumously though. His plaque can list all his accomplishments and then state that he was banned from baseball for the rest of his life for gambling on his own team. Tell the entire story.

It just warms my little heart when the underdog Dodgers can use their baseball expertise to take a chance on a relative unknown like Shohei and it pays off for them. Truly special...

I agree with you. Most teams burn their closer in the 9th thinking if we fail here, there is no 10th inning. Sure helps that we essentially have two closers.

I get what you're saying here but I'm positive the umps aren't glancing over to see where the batter's knee is exactly at the time the pitch enters the zone. I think the ABS would be consistent which would be 100 times better than what we have now. The hitters could adjust to that much easier than random umps who call the same pitch differently within one at-bat. I don't think the challenge system will last long either. Don't you retain your challenge if you're correct? It's going to make the umps look foolish for missing so many calls. If you can get every one of them right, why force a batter to challenge? Seems like a dumb system.

I'm with you but apparently, we are in the minority. It scares me to think we will lose Burnes for nothing more than a comp pick compared to what we could have landed by trading him. And it seems like a lesson was learned in the Hader trade that you can't deal core guys when you're still in the hunt. If we win the WS this year, great and gutsy move. If we don't, then we missed out on significant talent that could have helped us get there.

I don't understand why a challenge system would be a better option than simply getting every call correct. Obviously, if it needs to cook a little longer and get the kinks worked out, fine. I don't want to implement something that will be worse in its current state. But when it's accurate, why slow the game down and force a batter to challenge each bad call when umps seem to get a couple wrong each half-inning? That's just going to look embarrassing for MLB.

Does this mean no hope for automated balls/strikes in the majors for 2024? Or could they still implement that?

Until Joey can learn to hit with his "hair on fire" load, or he can calm it down a bit to produce more contact, I don't think this should be a consideration. I think others have said it in the Chourio thread, but start with Chourio, Mitchell and Frelick in the outfield, Yeli at 1B or DH, maybe platoon TT against lefties and see if Wiemer can make some progress in the minors. No reason to sell low on a kid that is dirt cheap and has the chance to improve. If he figures it out and we have 4 legit GG OFs, look to trade one at that point. They'll be worth more anyway once they've proven more.

I sure hope we're still saying he wasn't worth it after we see what his replacement does with this budget-conscious roster. And we'll have a front-row seat to see how he fares with the Cubs. They don't have WAR statistics for managers, I imagine. But the knowledgeable fans of teams with terrible managers are reminded constantly of how important they are.

I'm kind of surprised by that answer. We have all the prospects we need so let Burnes go after next year for nothing because he'll help us win an NL Central title next year? Is this a common thought process among fans? I don't think the front office is comfortable with losing Burnes for nothing. Why didn't we take that approach with Hader then? I'm on the fence with Adames. He's such a part of the chemistry of this team and the return from trading him could be underwhelming compared to what we would get for Burnes.

I simply cannot see the argument to have Burnes on this roster next year. No one believes we can extend him. There is zero chance he'll be in a Brewer uniform in 2025. If we start next season with him in the rotation, then the best possible scenario is that we're out of the playoff race in mid-July. But I would say it's likely we're still in the hunt come July. Now you're either giving up on a promising "bite of the apple" and incurring all the damage of the Hader trade all over again or you're keeping him for an ill-fated attempt to win a WS next year and then you lose him for nothing. I have to believe the pieces we could get for him this off-season would help us greatly in the next 4-5 years as the other talent matures. Maybe we finally get to eat the whole apple? The backlash from trading him will be significant but it's far worse if you deal him at the deadline in a year where we are still in the pennant race.

Is it the case that if we bring Hiura up, we can no longer send him back down without making him available to other clubs? I realize we did that once already - it just seems like there's a reason keeping him in AAA that has nothing to do with his production there recently.
