  1. If these veterans comprise 4/5ths of the starting rotation then it is not a supplement -- it is the main component. I really don't think anybody would have a problem if we had 3 talented pitchers with some upside, and then had guys like Wolf and Bush to fill out the other spots. The reality is, entering this season we had four soft-tossers (ages 35, 34, 33, and 30) in the rotation. There is little to no upside there. And again, that's not a "supplement" but rather almost the entire rotation.
  2. The reason it's not valid to ask "what would you have done this offseason?" or "who would you have signed?" is that Melvin didn't just arrive on the scene this past offseason. He's been with the team since 2002, and all of the moves he has made along the way are exponential and have led the franchise to be in the exact state it was during the offseason. Just because there were not a lot of free agent options this year doesn't mean nothing could have been done differently. If Melvin had acquired any decent young pitching at all during the past handful of years, instead of spending all of his resources getting "major league ready talent" like Mench, Estrada, Graffanino, Vargas, Suppan, Gomez, etc, this team would probably be in a lot better shape. There's an unlimited amount of possibilities for how this team could be better now, but you have to go all the way back to when he took the reigns -- and it's obviously not practical to try and state what moves could have been made since each move since the beginning has had a lasting effect on the moves that can be made after. Also, we will never know what moves were available to him. Unless you believe there was no possible way Melvin could have obtained more good young pitching at any point during his 8-year tenure, the argument just doesn't really hold water.
  3. Because he's gotten hammered and given up lots of runs. If he had given up all those runs in the 7th or 8th inning instead of the 9th it still would have cost us games.
  4. I'm demoralized about the general direction the team seems to have. Signing two high-priced old guys to fill out the back end of the bullpen was not really a good use of money. Decisions like starting Suppan (and now Narveson) over Parra are not going to get an organization anywhere. Teams win with good, young pitching -- and the guy with the most potential is buried in the pen so that JEFF SUPPAN could start more games. Doug Davis isn't terrible, but again, where is the organization going with somebody like him blocking Manny Parra from developing as a starter? Gamel progress seems to have been stunted by last year's debacle. It's like the front office is content to tread water every year.
  5. This team's pitching staff is well below average. A different manager isn't really going to change that. Besides, I've all but given up hope on finding a competent manager among the pool of "baseball men" whom GMs view as the only option.
  6. So, they just decided to all of the sudden make Erin into a crazy person? Okay...
  7. 2 out of those 3 pitchers aren't even in the rotation though. Their upside is negated right now as miscast LOOGYs. And soon, if they continue to be used the way they are, neither will be stretched out enough to be a viable option for the starting rotation. Blame this situation on Macha if you will, but Melvin must be okay with it. In fact, I'd say it's likely that Melvin was part of the decision making process that landed Suppan back in the rotation -- which is the main reason 2 of our pitchers with the most potential are being used sporadically out of the pen.

  9. Not directly. But this doctor's work (and the work of others in his field) would improve the performance of athletes......or anyone who is mobile. Is it Dr. Robert Cade, inventor of Gatorade?
  10. Sorry, pet peeve of mine when people start bragging about guessing a single team's win totals correctly like it means something~. Fun is fine as long as people remember that is all it is. Isn't trying to be correct part of the fun of a guessing game?
  11. 80-82 - Weeks will get hurt again; he will play less than 100 games. - Gomez, Escobar, Hart, and the catcher's spot will be too many weak bats in the lineup to be an offensive force; the offense will be middle of the pack in the NL - The starting rotation will be better, but still in the bottom 1/3 of the NL - The bullpen will be solid - The team will benefit quite a bit from the weakened division, but struggle somewhat against the East and West opponents - Ken Macha will be fired after the season
  12. Fantastic episode. I know it wasn't exactly high-brow humor, but when Jerry split his pants and then ripped a loud fart, I almost fell out of my chair laughing.
  13. I've never been skiing.
  14. Does that ever actually work?? I hear the idea get thrown around a lot regarding ligament damage, but it never seems to end well. Either the guy tries to do strengthening rehab for several weeks, realizes it's not going to work, and ends up having surgery anyway (and now they're several weeks behind in their recovery) -- or they actually do end up trying to play through it but are a shell of their former selves.
  15. I've just been catching up on the first two seasons of Metalocalypse. Hilarious if you're into dark humor and adult swim type shows. I watch Parks and Recreation, The Office, and 30 Rock whenever they're new. I'm pumped about Breaking Bad starting a new season March 21.
  16. I kind of wish they'd try something different entirely with halftime. Setting up some big fancy stage just to have a band come out and play parts of their 3 most popular songs isn't very creative or entertaining. Have a marching band and/or some type of football-related awards/inductions. Anything that might actually be interesting. Better yet... http://exburgher.com/art/stories/January06/TecmoSuperBowl/32Bombjack.gif
  17. I get a kick out of the fact that companies just throw "for men" onto a previously existing product in an attempt to create a whole new market. Dove: Men + Care
  18. HAM and MAYONNAISE!! HAM and MAYONNAISE!!
  19. Ned Yost was also partially to blame for that. Sabathia was often left in games (with very high pitch counts) that were already well in hand, for things like complete games or just because.
  20. I can't believe how (relatively) poorly The Office and especially 30 Rock do in the ratings. I guess probably because they're up against Grey's Anatomy. I mean, more people watch Bones than The Office or 30 Rock? I would have never guessed that. The Office is a show everybody is always talking about. I've never heard anybody discuss Bones in my entire life.
  21. Right. Leno's willingness to take the job back put Conan under even more pressure and basically was the nail in the coffin. If they didn't have Leno to snatch the job back, would they be so quick to push Conan out? I doubt it. If you can't see that swooping in and taking something from your "friend" and fellow comedian is douchey, then I certainly wouldn't want you as a friend. And it would be more understandable if this were maybe 2 years down the road and Conan still wasn't pulling decent ratings. A change would be easier to swallow and understand. They didn't even give him a chance. NBC is panicking because they feel they NEED to win this timeslot RIGHT NOW. Unfortunately, just sticking Leno back on the Tonight Show isn't going to work that way. Like a previous poster said, sometimes you can't go home again and have everything be like it was. Everything's changed.
  22. ...He can heal leopards...
  23. That doesn't necessarily mean that the segment had to be SO stupid and unfunny. It could have at least made sense if Dwight had just been really annoying and tried to be the office disciplinarian about minor recycling infractions. Instead, he put on hockey gear, started just randomly throwing stuff around and dumping out the water cooler all over the floor? Why?? Maybe I'm just being too picky, as it was only the opening to the show. Still, what made the show funny in the first place was at least a touch of realism and subtlety. Nobody would EVER act like Recyclops did, and no way a bit like that comes anywhere near an episode during the first season.
  24. Tonight's episode was a total stinker. Dwight as "Recyclops" going around destroying everything in the office was probably the worst bit they've ever done. Just awful.
  25. I'm pretty sure I love her. I wonder if her and 'Nard-Dog will ever get together...
