    But who are these younger players that need a shot next year (and I know you used quotation marks)? Chase Anderson will be 29. Aaron Wilkerson will be 28 (he's only a few weeks younger than Peralta). Nelson will be 28 (he's only a few weeks younger than Wilkerson). Nelson and Peralta both have pretty clear MLB track records at this point. Davies I'm all for having in the rotation. Hader has the ability to push his way into the rotation, should he pitch to his potential. Taylor Jungmann, in my humble opinion, sucks. And will be 27. Ditto for Suter. I don't think you plan around Wei-Chung Wang. Woodruff/Lopez/Ortiz/Bickford are not realistic 2017 options at this point. That could change during the year, but then again look at what happened to Lopez this season. It's easier to go backward than it is to go forward in this game. Signing a guy like Morton doesn't need to a pivot towards contention. The Brewers are still in a position, much like last year, where if they can grab talent at a value, they should do it. And if Morton doesn't make the rotation, his stuff probably plays up in the bullpen a little bit.

    A full year of Arcia at is a vast, vast improvement over 2/3 of a season of Villar at SS. And Villar's work at third was so shoddy that he tanked an otherwise decent performance there from Perez and Hill. I think it's also plausible that Villar could be better than Gennett at second base. So yes, I do think there will be a drastic improvement on the infield, if mostly on the left side.

    If Taylor Williams is not added, they are all but assured of losing him.

    Four months out from opening day, and with Garza likely in his last year (or months?) with the club, I don't think that having the guys the Brewers currently have around should preclude the Brewers from adding talent, if that talent comes at a value. Peralta and Nelson both were good for stretches and horrible for others. I like Nelson a lot, but I wouldn't be opposed to sending him back to AAA if he starts pitching in 2017 like he finished pitching in 2016. If Peralta is pitching in the first half like he did in last year's first half, he should be moved to the pen. I wouldn't let the presence of Matt Garza dictate any current roster decision. If he looks good in spring, great, if not, the Brewers cut bait. I wouldn't let the presence of Wilkerson, Suter, Lopez, or Jungmann dictate any current MLB roster decision. Anderson still has an option left. If five starters show better in spring, he gets knocked down to AAA. If Hader outpitches him in AAA, Hader is up before Anderson. Davies and Guerra are, to me, the only guys clearly in the 2017 rotation at the moment. And Guerra's arm is a time bomb. That leaves plenty of room for a guy like Morton.

    The Phillies declined Charlie Morton's 2017 option today. His season ended early due to hamstring surgery and I fully acknowledge that he wasn't that good in 2015. He does, however, get a ton of ground balls and with the infield defense looking potentially better next season, that's a big plus. His velocity has also been consistent since he retooled his mechanics a few years ago. I also acknowledge that he's going to be 33 in a few weeks, but there might be some value in giving him a two year deal assuming his asking price is less AAV than the $8 mil he made this year (or the value of his $9+ mil option for 2017).

    Pass on Cahill. The Brewers don't need to start allocating money to players on the DL already. Wood would be an interesting guy to take a chance on as a starter, though in the past he's had trouble getting to 90 MPH with his fastball when he's not coming out of the bullpen. Downside is he earned $6 million + this year, so if we're using that as a baseline for his next contract, there may not be a whole lot of extra value being generated, even as a starter.

    Salt River Rafters 5, Scottsdale Scorpions 8 Box Score Game Day Second loss in a row keeps the Rafters a half game out of first place. Isan Diaz was back at second base and went 2-5 with a double, two runs scored, a stolen base, and a strikeout. Jacob Nottingham went 0-4 with 2 strikeouts, and was the backstop for 3 more wild pitches. That would be 8 wild pitches and 2 passed balls in the past two days. I know there might be some context to some of those pitches, but short of Nuke LaLoosh and Ricky Vaughn being on the mound, that can't happen. One of the wild pitches belonged to Tyler Spurlin, who was otherwise great again. Spurlin allowed a single to the first batter he faced and proceeded to retire the next 6 batters he faced, 3 via strikeout and 2 via ground ball. Spurlin's fastball velocity was all over the place, with Pitch F/X picking them up anywhere between 87 and 93. Salt River plays again tonight at 8:35 CDT.

    From Tuesday. Salt River Rafters 2, Peoria Javelinas 12 Box Score Game Day Going from the good side of a blowout to the wrong side... All three Brewers offensive players on the club were in the starting lineup today, though only one had a hit. Isan Diaz (playing second) and Brett Phillips both went 0-4 with 2 Ks. Jacob Nottingham went 2-4 with a double and a strikeout. The Javelinas did not attempt a stolen base against him, though the defensive good news ends there as Nottingham committed his second error (on a pickoff throw), and allowed 2 more passed balls. He was also behind the plate for 5 (!) wild pitches. No Brewers farmhands made a mound appearance.

    Peralta's 8 week demotion to AAA cost him a year of service time. As of the end of 2016, he's at about 3 years and 159 days. So if he had been in Milwaukee for 14 more days this year, he would have surpassed 4 years of service time. Not quite as bad as Taylor Jungmann, who I have as being 1 day short of a full year of service.

    I agree with Briggs that dismissing a guy like Jason Castro just because he's a 29-going-on-30 year old veteran is foolish. If you can get talent for no acquisition cost at a reasonable price and it fills a need, why not? That being said, I don't think Castro fills a need to the extent of the price he'll command. You're basically getting him for his defense because his bat has been bad outside of 2013. He actually struck out at a higher rate than Chris Carter did this year. His defensive skills are fine, but I think the market might overprice the value of "fine" in this case. If the Brewers can get him for 1 year/$6 million, sure. Might be worth the flyer to see if he could catch fire and be flipped at the deadline. Anything much more than that and I begin to question how much value he's really adding to the current group of guys, or odds that his future value in terms of being traded for prospects outweighs his salary. Someone suggested 3 years/$30 million - at that price point, run the other direction.

    Salt River Rafters 17, Mesa Solar Sox 2 Box Score Game Day It seems to me that offense has been down this year in the AFL from years past, and if that's the case, the Rafters' bats went old-timey and thundered their way past Mesa, and back into first place. Perhaps unfortunately, only one of the Brewers' contingent was in the lineup for this romp. Brett Phillips, who was hitting .160 a few days ago, went 3-4 with a double, 2 walks, 3 runs scored, and 3 RBIs. All of the sudden Phillips is hitting .250 and carries an 819 OPS (including a .444 OBP - 12 walks in 32 AFL ABs). Phillips also stole a base. Likewise, only one of the Brewers' contingent pitched in the win. Tayler Scott continued to impress, throwing 2 scoreless innings, allowing a single, a walk, and netting a strikeout. 3 of the 5 outs recorded in the field were ground balls, continuing a trend. Scott's AFL ERA dropped to 0.87 across 10 and a third innings pitched. Salt River back at it on Tuesday afternoon.

    I've seen around 100 Phillips ABs this year and depending on what day it is, you are going to get anything from feet-planted leg wobbling to a front foot tap right up the point of delivery. It doesn't look like a timing tap, either, it looks more to me like antsy leg twitching. He has always seemed very fidgety in the batters box. Some people make that work - many don't. Between having trouble getting set and given how far his hands have to move back through the hitting zone, it's no wonder he has trouble making consistent contact. All that said, the fact that he walks so much bodes very well if he's able to quiet his stance down and get quicker to the ball. He has a good idea at the plate. He's just making it too complicated on himself. If he's able to un-complicate, he has the opportunity to be a special offensive player, on top of being a really good defender.

    Eliminate the DH. I know it only helps pace of play in the AL, but more pitchers hitting = more quick outs. Mercy rule. If a team is up by 10 runs and the game is official (5 innings), game over. 15 second time limit to challenge a call.

    I imagine there will be a few more guys to come off soon-ish. I have a difficult time seeing them carrying Rowen and Goforth through the offseason. Pinto probably goes too.

    Salt River Rafters 3, Glendale Desert Dogs 6 Box Score Game Day Rafter split a home-and-home with Glendale and fall to second place in the division. Jacob Nottingham was the only Brewers position player to Saturday's game, and had a day to forget. Playing DH, he went 0-4 and took the golden sombrero with 4 Ks. After two good starts to kick off his AFL season, Javi Salas turned in his second clunker in a row. The allowed 3 runs in 3 innings, with 3 walks, 2 hits, 2 strikeouts, and a hit batter. ERA came down a little to 9.31. Josh Uhen backed him up in relief and allowed a run over two innings pitched. He gave up a double and a single, and struck out three. After a day off on Sunday, the Rafters play again at Mesa on Monday afternoon in a battle for first place.

    Salt River Rafters 4, Glendale Desert Dogs 1 Box Score Game Day Action from Friday as Salt River moves to 9-6: Isan Diaz lead off, playing SS this time, and went 0-3. He reached via HBP, scored a run, and struck out. Also committed his third error at short. Brett Phillips went 1-3 with a walk and a strikeout. Tyler Spurlin with another good outing, throwing a scoreless inning with two groundouts and one flyout. ERA is down to 1.23. Former Brewer 19th round pick (back in 2010) and former position player Rowan Wick has become a full time pitcher in the Cardinals organization, and threw a scoreless inning for Glendale.

    Salt River Rafters 7, Scottsdale Scorpions 9 Box Score Game Day Not sure if the game will be archived, but I will try to find a link. I did not get a chance to catch any of the game, so thank you for the comments from the people who did. Rafters lose after blowing a 7th-inning lead. Thankfully no Brewers pitchers were involved in the late game collapse. The only Brewer pitcher to get in the game, as mentioned, was Tayler Scott, who added 2 and 1/3 innings of shutout ball to his growing AFL resume. I still haven't seen him pitch, so hopefully there is indeed an archive. Scott allowed a single and a walk in his outing, along with getting two strikeouts. Isan Diaz (DH), Jacob Nottingham ©, and Brett Phillips (RF) were all in the lineup. Diaz was the most impressive of the group, reaching base in all five plate appearances on 2 singles and 3 walks. That would be five walks in the past two games. Nottingham did not get a hit, though he did reach base via walk, and had an RBI on a ground out. Opposing runners were 3-3 against him in stolen base attempts. Brett Phillips went 1-2 and reached two more times via walk. He's only batting .160, but has a .371 OBP - he's really Walshing right now. His hit was a double, and he had 2 RBIs. Diaz successfully stole his first base of the AFL year, and Phillips unsuccessfully stole his second. Salt River plays again on Friday afternoon.

    If you are able to figure out how to build something that people will want to go to, people will go there. Micro-gentrification of urban areas happens all of the time. Using words like "unattractive" and "poor location" and "just doesn't make sense" doesn't change the fact that there are ways to make a development like this viable. Maybe very difficult and quite possibly not worth the risk (at least not to the Brewers), but dismissing ideas out of hand because of current conditions is not something developers do. A lot of foresight and vision is involved in the process.

    Mall vacancy is a highly localized issue - for every half vacant mall, there is a mall that is full and raising rents due to retailer competition. Both regional and strip malls reached peak vacancy back in late 2011, and vacancy rates have generally been declining since, down to about 8% at present for regional, a tick under 10% for strip. There is some thought out there that the great brick and mortar disaster peaked because there is only so much that people are willing to buy online. Maybe, maybe not. Though it is true that there are some things people absolutely still go to the store to buy. To mitigate vacancy issues, that's why I suggested a mixed-use entertainment complex, maybe two big box anchors, another .75-1 million square feet for smaller tenants, an indoor amusement/water park, theater, hotel, parking ramp w/skyway linking hotel and stadium, etc. No idea if it would work, and the Brewers have probably studied it. But if I had to put an idea out there, that would be it.

Isan Diaz lead off and once again played second base, and went 0-3 with two walks and a strikeout. Clean defense. As mentioned a few posts above, Josh Uhen pitched one inning, and gave up a run on a hit and a walk, and struck out one. If his slider is decent and he can start locating better, he certainly has the stuff to make it. I haven't seen him pitch in a few years though. The Rafters are back and it and back on TV! (well, MLB.com) at 8:35 CDT Thursday night.

    In today's game, Josh Uhen gives up a run in the 4th but his fastball was a consistent 95-97. Slider at about 84-85. Isan Diaz has his first two AFL walks in his first two plate appearances.
