  1. In these tweets, Brewers Player Development confirms the release of the following ten players (Mass Haas may cover these guys in more detail later): RHP Jeremy Newton (NDFA - 2016) 1B Alan Sharkey (13th round - 2012) LHP Joan De La Cruz (IFA - 2012) OF Omar Garcia (7th round - 2013) IF Josue Herrera (IFA - 2015) LHP Shawn Clowers (NDFA - 2015) OF Marcos Pinero (IFA - 2014) C Zach Taylor (15th round - 2015) RHP Axel Cruz (IFA - 2016) LHP Boanerges Nova (IFA - 2013)
  2. Except it's not guaranteed. It's like a reverse minor league contract w/spring invite. It's a major league contract that gives the Brewers the right to dis-invite him.
  3. According to Haudricourt, the contract is not fully guaranteed. Even if it was guaranteed, don't think this was a signal they are trading a starter but with it non-guaranteed, pretty much confirms he's here to compete for a spot with everyone else.
  4. Indeed signed.
  5. Does being an ace require both stuff and talent, or can you get away with having one and not the other?
  6. Patrick, when you have a chance I'd be interested to know your thoughts on Hans Crouse and Jacob Heatherly. Heatherly in particular is really growing on me.
  7. I don't believe that is even in the ballpark of being accurate.
  8. Probably helps Manny Pina's position with the club. I imagine the Brewers want both Susac and Bandy to start, and they both can't start in Milwaukee.
  9. Ethier has 10/5 rights. Extraordinarily doubtful he approves a trade to Milwaukee.
  10. The overall pick # will probably change due to FA activity.
  11. Both signed in July 2013. At this point, extremely long odds either would need to be protected.
  12. The starting pitcher for Brisbane was Daniel Nilsson - without doing any research on it and going by the photo, would hazard a guess that that is Dave's kid.
  13. The Brewers wouldn't need to consider adding Bickford to the 40-man early until after his third failed drug of abuse test. He has another 23 months before he needs to be added to the 40-man for Rule 5 protection.
  14. Players on MLB 40-man rosters are not subject to suspension for marijuana, so they have probably the most progressive policy of the major US sports. Minor league players, on the other hand, still do get suspended for pot.
  15. 100 games for third positive test of a drug of abuse.
  16. He throws a fastball, change up, and some sort of breaking ball. Pretty simple three quarters delivery. Not sure on velocity, but I might try to watch one of his starts tonight. Pretty big FB pitcher so Colorado Springs might be a challenge.
  17. The Brewers have 50 position players currently under contract who will need to start the season in extended spring training. In order to field a second short-season team, they would realistically only need 10 or so more guys - which would be covered and then some by the 2017 draft.
  18. I did a quick run-through of the system yesterday and here are the players who, at first blush, will be eligible for the Rule 5 draft for the first time next year (i.e., they'll have to be added to the 40-man to be protected): [pre]AAA Aaron Wilkerson AA Jacob Nottingham Dustin Demuth Mauricio Dubon Brandon Woodruff A+ David Denson Malik Collymore Brandon Diaz Freddy Peralta Devin Williams Kaleb Earls A Tucker Neuhaus R+ Franley Mallen Joantgel Segovia Yeraldy Martinez Nattino Diplan Juan Diaz R Carlos Leal Julio Mendez Nelson Hernandez Carlos Luna Daniel Missaki DSL Nic Pierre Joaquin De La Cruz[/pre] As of right now, you'd have to consider Nottingham, Dubon, and Woodruff to be locks. Peralta and Williams are not too far behind them.
  19. Right, but when you say "people on this board" - which you do a lot - you are implicitly including yourself, because you are on this board. (And I'm assuming you are a person.) That's the problem with generalizations.
  20. Last year the Padres made four Rule 5 selections. They ended up keeping one all year (Perdomo) and traded for another to keep him in the organization (Blash). The other two (Martin/Smith) were returned to their original organizations. Detroit kept 3 all year back in 2003.
  21. Not a fact. The primary guys the Brewers will have to protect next year are Nottingham/Woodruff/Dubon. I don't see Diaz being on the 40-man roster as an impediment to adding three guys to the roster 11 months from now.
  22. My issue with saying that Diaz is only in A-ball, so it might be wasting a roster spot for a few years and he may run out of options, is that it gets into predicting the future a little too much. It is not unreasonable to expect a guy as talented as Diaz (whose future scouting grade ranges from about 45-60, depending on who you listen to) to spend part of next year in A+ and part of next year in AA, should things click. Once a player is at AA, the trip between there and MLB can be relatively short. And I'm not predicting that would happen, but Diaz being up in 2018 or 2019 is just as plausible as Diaz being out of options in spring training of 2020. Keeping Goforth (who was on the 40-man at the time) at the expense of losing Diaz still strikes me as a weird move that has considerably more downside than upside.
  23. Smith has been traded to the Cubs. It was real while it lasted, Caleb.
