Blazek Leads Sox To Fourth Straight Win Noonan drives in two to secure seventh straight home win By Robby Veronesi / Colorado Springs Sky Sox (Photo: Paat Kelly) Colorado Springs Boxscore Perhaps Michael Blazek performed voodoo on Chase Anderson, as hours after Blazek's superb start in Colorado Springs, Anderson went down with his oblique injury. While the strikeouts weren't there, Blazek held Omaha to one unearned* run over 7 2/3 innings pitched. He scattered six hits and walked one. Important to note he did this at altitude in Colorado Springs, so no small feat. *The unearned run scored as a result of a throwing error... on Michael Blazek. Seems wrong it should be unearned. Wei-Chung Wang stranded one of Blazek's baserunners in the eighth, got another out in the ninth, and Rob Scahill closed it out. Mauricio Dubon had 2 hits in his 4th game with the Sky Sox to pace the offense. Nate Orf drew 3 walks, and Jett Bandy drew 2 walks. Nick Noonan had the lone extra base knock, an eighth inning double that extended then lead from one run to three. Colorado Springs Game Log Noonan's big hit: Col. Springs Bottom of the 8th Lewis Brinson reaches on a fielding error by pitcher Eric Stout. Brett Phillips called out on strikes. Ivan De Jesus singles on a line drive to center fielder Terrance Gore. Ivan De Jesus to 2nd. Lewis Brinson advances to 3rd, on a fielding error by center fielder Terrance Gore. Eric Stout intentionally walks Jett Bandy. Nick Noonan doubles (5) on a line drive to center fielder Terrance Gore. Lewis Brinson scores. Ivan De Jesus scores. Jett Bandy out at home on the throw, center fielder Terrance Gore to second baseman Dean Anna to catcher Cam Gallagher. Nate Orf walks. Andrew Susac strikes out swinging. -

C Kyle Beam was officially activated on the AZL roster last night, which brings that roster total to 34, same as Helena's. CF Tyrone Taylor now officially appears on Biloxi's DL. There are still 17 "missing" players not to be found on any roster. -

AZL Brewers 5, AZL White Sox 4 AZL Brewers Boxscore I had forgotten that the new 10th inning rule being tested in the complex leagues existed. As you'll see in the game log snippet posted below, the Brewers won after they had a runner, Robie Rojas in this case, placed on second base to begin the inning. The "leadoff" batter Robert Henry, who earlier in the game drove in a run with his first professional hit, tried to bunt Rojas over to third. On the ensuing throw to get Henry at first, the pitcher threw the ball away, Rojas scored from second, and the Brewers won the game on a throwing error on one batter. Captivating stuff. The Brewers had a season low 8 (!) hits, and only walked twice, but came away with the victory nonetheless. Keston Hiura, who already may be getting bored of AZL pitching, was 2-4 with a double and two RBIs. He's hitting .563/.600/1.125 after about 20 pro PAs, though he still has yet to play on the field. Presumably he's on a throwing program and after we see him at second base a few times in Arizona, he'll be off to Wisconsin. The aforementioned Robert Henry was the only other Baby Brewer with two hits, his first two as a pro. Rehabbing Tyrone Taylor, who must be close to returning to Biloxi, went 1-3 with a walk and stolen base. NDFA Kyle Beam made his pro debut, albeit as a defensive replacement that did not come to the plate. As mentioned a few posts above, Josh Pennington made his organizational debut on a rehab assignment. He threw two innings, which may mean he's a little further along that the normal rehab-er. He allowed a single, and struck out two. 20th round pick Austin Rubick made his pro debut in the 10th inning, and was immediately inserted into the runner on second and no out scenario that won the Brewers the game in the bottom half. He got out of the "jam" - see the game log below. AZL Brewers Game Log This happens now: AZL White Sox Top of the 10th Defensive Substitution: Kyle Beam replaces center fielder Tyrone Taylor, batting 1st, playing first base. Defensive switch from left field to center field for Jesus Lujano. Defensive switch from first base to left field for Pat McInerney. Pitching Change: Austin Rubick replaces Christian Taugner. Austin Crutcher starts inning at 2nd base. Lenyn Sosa out on a sacrifice bunt, pitcher Austin Rubick to first baseman Kyle Beam. Austin Crutcher to 3rd. Michael Hickman lines out to left fielder Pat McInerney. Antonio Rodriguez flies out to right fielder Robert Henry. AZL Brewers Bottom of the 10th Pitching Change: Michael McCormick replaces Greg Minier. Robie Rojas starts inning at 2nd base. Robert Henry singles on a bunt ground ball to pitcher Michael McCormick. Robie Rojas scores. Throwing error by pitcher Michael McCormick. -
Error Leads to Brewers Walk Off in Extras In third extra inning game against Voyagers, Brewers win on error to top Voyagers for first time this season By Garrett Greene / Helena Brewers (Photo: Helena Brewers) Helena Independent Record (w/quotes) - Brewers walk off winners with extra-inning hit, error Helena Boxscore Before getting too concerned about Helena's poor start to the season, I want to take you back to 2016. Helena won their first three games of the season, five of their first six, and were 6-3 after nine games. The 2016 team would go on to 22 of their remaining 65 games, and finish 18 games under .500. Point being, it's still early folks. And now they have their first winning streak of the season. Starting with pitching first, reigning Pioneer League player of the week Michael Petersen pitched an outstanding first four innings and seemed to be putting himself into contention for the award again before running into trouble in the fifth. Through 4 innings, Petersen had allowed 1 hit, 1 walk, and struck out 6. The fifth inning saw him allow a leadoff home run, a single and two walks before giving way to NDFA signee Brandon Texiera. Texiera, to his credit, stranded both of the runners that Petersen left on base upon exit. Peterson is a big dude without a ton of experience, partly due to being academically ineligible for the 2014 season, so despite the fact that he's 23, he's still a bit of a project. Petersen throws plenty hard, touching the middle 90s, gets some sink due to his arm slot and throws a nice curveball. Command has always been his bugaboo, and he does now have 7 walks in 10 2/3 innings, but it seems he his making progress in that regard. Texiera would go on to give up two runs of his own in 2 1/3 innings pitched. Parker Bean and Juan Diaz combined on a scoreless final 3 innings, with Diaz getting the win. All in all, the Helena pitchers got 15 groundball outs against just 3 flyball outs. Helena's bats as group are slowly coming around. Zach Clark, who has walked plenty but hit little this year, notched his first home run, a 3-run job, in the second innings. Dallas Carroll, Jay Feliciano, and Nic Pierre all had two hits apiece, with Feliciano's double being the only other extra base hit. They won, so we'll ignore that the offense struck out 15 times and only walked once. Their team batting average is still the lowest in the league, at .256. Their team ERA is 5.59, which is actually third-best in eight team league. Their staff has walked the most batters in the league, however. Helena Game Log The winning... rally?: Helena Bottom of the 10th Pitching Change: Blake Battenfield replaces Tyler Johnson. Nick Roscetti singles on a bunt ground ball to third baseman Anthony Villa. With Dallas Carroll batting, wild pitch by Blake Battenfield, Nick Roscetti to 2nd. Dallas Carroll singles on a ground ball to second baseman Tate Blackman. Nick Roscetti scores. Throwing error by second baseman Tate Blackman.

AZL Brewers 15, AZL Padres #1 6 AZL Brewers Boxscore This team is certainly not lacking for offensive firepower. They've scored the most runs in the league, and have a league-best OPS of 1.024. They have twice as many walks as all but one other team. They have the most stolen bases in the league. Most home runs, most doubles. And the team ERA of 6.33 is only the sixth worst! I can't get into detail on each and every baserunner - the team got on base 25 more times today - but here are the highlights: *Keston Huira continued his AZL onslaught with a 3-4, 2 triple, 4 RBI, 1 BB night. At an 1.875 OPS, it seems the first rounder is overmatching his competition at the plate, but he still has not thrown in a game yet. *On the other end of the draft spectrum, 36th round pick Kenny Corey had three hits as well, including 2 doubles. After playing outfield his first few games, Corey started at shortstop (though he did commit the team's only error there). That's the kind of versatility the Brewers love to see. *Tyrone Taylor, who seems to be closing in on a return to Biloxi, had another two hits including his second home run in as many days. Taylor also nabbed his first stolen base, a good sign for a guy returning from a hamstring injury. *Also had two hits: debuting NDFA Tyler Lawrence, recently returned from Helena Julio Mendez, and 18 year old Francisco Thomas, who also already has four walks this young season. *Speaking of NDFAs, Pat McInerney walked for the sixth and seventh times, and had a double in four official at-bats. *39th round pick Robert Henry, one of two outfielders on the active roster (not including the rehabbing Taylor), is the only batter not playing well to kick off the season, as he's started his pro career 0-14. But, being only one of two outfielders on the roster, he'll have plenty of opportunity to start hitting. On a different day, that the pitching staff allowed six runs wouldn't be looked upon favorably, but they won by 9 runs, so who cares? Personal favorite Joaquin De La Cruz made his first stateside appearance and start, and struck out 7 while walking none in his 4 innings of work. He allowed 2 earned runs, and continued to induce opposing batters to clobber the ball into the ground. NDFA Branden Nunn made his pro debut, and allowed 2 runs in 2 innings. 2016 NDFA Jake Smith was impressive again, striking out four and allowing only a walk in his 2 innings. I'd look for him to move up soon, except there isn't any room in Helena. Finally, Landon Holifield closed things out, allowing only a run on a passed ball (which is unearned, for those scoring along at home). AZL Brewers Game Log Five run third: AZL Brewers Top of the 3rd Pitching Change: Jose Cabrera replaces Dan Dallas. Robert Henry reaches on a fielding error by shortstop Jordy Barley. With Tyler Lawrence batting, Robert Henry steals (1) 2nd base. Tyler Lawrence triples (1) on a fly ball to center fielder Jeisson Rosario. Robert Henry scores. Julio Mendez walks. With Francisco Thomas batting, throwing error by Blake Hunt on the pickoff attempt, Tyler Lawrence scores. Francisco Thomas singles on a ground ball to second baseman Matthew Batten. Julio Mendez to 2nd. With Tyrone Taylor batting, Julio Mendez steals (1) 3rd base. Francisco Thomas steals (2) 2nd base. Tyrone Taylor pops out to second baseman Matthew Batten in foul territory. Jesus Lujano triples (1) on a fly ball to right fielder Agustin Ruiz. Julio Mendez scores. Francisco Thomas scores. Keston Hiura out on a sacrifice fly to right fielder Agustin Ruiz. Jesus Lujano scores. Pat McInerney walks. Kenny Corey singles on a ground ball to right fielder Agustin Ruiz, deflected by first baseman Jaquez Williams. Pat McInerney to 3rd. Pitching Change: Thomas Cosgrove replaces Jose Cabrera. Robert Henry grounds out, second baseman Matthew Batten to first baseman Jaquez Williams. Five run eighth: AZL Brewers Top of the 8th Pitching Change: Caleb Boushley replaces Trevor Megill. Kenny Corey grounds out, shortstop Jordy Barley to first baseman Jaquez Williams. Robert Henry hit by pitch. Tyler Lawrence singles on a ground ball to center fielder Jeisson Rosario. Robert Henry to 2nd. Julio Mendez doubles (1) on a fly ball to left fielder Angel Santos. Robert Henry scores. Tyler Lawrence to 3rd. Francisco Thomas singles on a fly ball to center fielder Jeisson Rosario. Tyler Lawrence scores. Julio Mendez scores. Fielding error by center fielder Jeisson Rosario. Offensive Substitution: Pinch-hitter Moises Perez replaces Tyrone Taylor. With Moises Perez batting, wild pitch by Caleb Boushley, Francisco Thomas to 2nd. Moises Perez walks. Jesus Lujano reaches on a throwing error by shortstop Jordy Barley. Francisco Thomas scores. Moises Perez to 3rd. Jesus Lujano to 2nd. Keston Hiura reaches on a throwing error by shortstop Jordy Barley. Moises Perez scores. Jesus Lujano to 3rd. Pat McInerney walks. Keston Hiura to 2nd. AZL Diamondbacks 11, AZL Brewers 3 AZL Brewers Boxscore The Baby Brewers wound up on the other side of a lopsided loss on Sunday. Besides the pitching issues in the game, the defense committed four more errors, which brings their two game total to 7 errors - that's a lot, even for this league. The offense pounded out 10 more hits, though they only drew one walk after drawing 15 walks in their first game. Rehabbing Tyrone Taylor notched two more hits, a double and a home run. Keston Hiura had a double, a single, and was hit by a pitch in his second pro game (still DHing), and sports a 1.600 OPS. Nick Egnatuk had his first two pro hits, both singles, after having an 0-3, 3 walk game one. Francisco Thomas, playing second base again, rounded out the multi-hit efforts with a single and a double. There were two pro debuts on the offensive side. 38th round pick Robie Rojas caught the entire game and went 1-4. NDFA Julian Jarrard was the starting shortstop and took an 0-4. Both of them committed an error as well. Speaking of pro debuts, there were three of them on the mound. 37th round pick Christian Taugner pitched a scoreless ninth. NDFA Matt Hardy allowed no earned runs over his three inning stint. Fellow NDFA Tyler Thorne was not so lucky, as he gave up three earned runs in two innings of work. The starting pitcher was young Puerto Rican lefty Wilfred Salaman. After straight dominating his three DSL starts earlier this year, the going was a little tougher in his stateside debut. Salaman gave up six earned runs on eight hits and a walk in three innings pitched, though he did notch his fifth pickoff of the season. AZL Brewers Game Log Former #1 prospect home run: AZL Brewers Bottom of the 3rd Francisco Thomas strikes out swinging. Tyrone Taylor homers (1) on a fly ball to left field. Jesus Lujano grounds out, second baseman Ryan Dobson to first baseman Luke Van Rycheghem. Keston Hiura hit by pitch. Pat McInerney grounds out, third baseman Didimo Bracho to first baseman Luke Van Rycheghem.

Jorge Lopez just pitched his second consecutive outing in relief. Hmm. His command has never been great, and then backed up quite a bit last year. Bullpen was probably most realistic scenario going forward, so I hope the Brewers are committing to that. He certainly has the stuff to be a strong back end bullpen piece.

AZL Brewers 16, AZL Cubs 8 AZL Brewers Boxscore A huge day offensively as the Baby Brewers score 12 runs in innings 6-9 to come back and beat the Baby Backs on Opening Day of the Arizona League season.. The offense came from literally everywhere in the lineup. In addition to the 13 hits, the Brewers drew 15 walks. Strangely enough in a game that featured 24 runs, 26 hits, and 19 walks, there were no hit batters. First and foremost, first round pick Keston Hiura made his pro debut and it was a good one. After striking out in his first pro plate appearance, Hiura singled the next time up, and then smacked his first pro home run in the 9th inning. He also walked. Stateside debutante Jesus Lujano, playing left field today, paced the offense with three hits (all singles). He walked as well, and drove in a run. 38th round pick Kenny Corey, who replaced rehabbing Tyrone Taylor in the 4th inning, hit a double and a single, and walked twice as well in quite the pro debut himself. However besting even that was non-drafted free agent signee Pat McInerney, who was 2-2, with a double, a home run, and four walks. That would be a 4.000 OPS. 5th round pick Nick Egnatutk and 39th round pick Robert Henry made pro debuts as well, though both went hitless. Egnatuk managed three walks, and Henry one walk. Moises Perez made his stateside debut, and Yeison Coca made his organizational debut after being the PTBNL in the Thornburg trade. Both went 1-5. Five different Brewers pitchers pitched in today's game, though only two gave up runs. Drake Owenby, who is a member of the active roster in Arizona but would seem to be making a rehab assignment, started and lasted an inning and a third, giving up three hits, two walks, and one earned run. 2016 24th rounder Michael Gonzalez pitched four innings, and got hit the hardest, surrendering five earned runs on nine hits and two walks. He did strike out six. Debuting non-drafted free agents Gabe Friese and Landon Holifield both pitched well in their stints, and 2016 non-drafted free agent Jake Smith pitched a clean inning as well. AZL Brewers Game Log Seven run ninth inning including back to back home runs put the game away: AZL Brewers Top of the 9th Robert Henry reaches on a throwing error by third baseman Didimo Bracho. Francisco Thomas walks. Robert Henry to 2nd. Yeison Coca singles on a bunt ground ball to catcher Jordan McArdle. Robert Henry to 3rd. Francisco Thomas to 2nd. Kenny Corey walks. Robert Henry scores. Francisco Thomas to 3rd. Yeison Coca to 2nd. Jesus Lujano singles on a line drive to center fielder Jesus Munoz. Francisco Thomas scores. Yeison Coca to 3rd. Kenny Corey to 2nd. With Keston Hiura batting, wild pitch by Oliver Polanco, Yeison Coca scores. Kenny Corey to 3rd. Jesus Lujano to 2nd. Keston Hiura homers (1) on a fly ball to left field. Kenny Corey scores. Jesus Lujano scores. Pat McInerney homers (1) on a fly ball to left field. Nick Egnatuk walks. Pitching Change: Cole Bartlett replaces Oliver Polanco. Moises Perez strikes out swinging. Robert Henry grounds into a force out, shortstop Jose King to second baseman Jancarlos Cintron. Nick Egnatuk out at 2nd. Robert Henry to 1st. Francisco Thomas lines out to second baseman Jancarlos Cintron. -

DSL Cubs 4, DSL Brewers/Indians 1 DSL Brewers Co-Op Boxscore Three of the four Cubs runs came in off an Indians pitcher, so we can blame this on them. Brewers' pitchers threw 6 1/3 innings of no earned-run, 5 hit baseball. Wilmy De Jesus allowed an unearned run in his 2 1/3 innings, Jefry Tamares worked two near-perfect innings, while Jose Alberro and Melvin Mendez both threw a scoreless inning. The offense was limited to four singles, one each by Elian Gonzalez, Bryan Torres, Rafael Brito, and Jose Pena. Gonzalez and Torres added a walk each as well, and Torres' average through about 50 PAs is .362. He's also thrown out 39% of attempted base stealers. DSL Brewers Co-Op Game Log The co-op squad's lone run was definitely of the DSL variety: DSL Indians/Brewers Top of the 1st Elian Gonzalez strikes out swinging, catcher Erick Gonzalez to first baseman Luis Hidalgo. Edwin Sano grounds out, shortstop Christopher Morel to first baseman Luis Hidalgo. Bryan Torres walks. With Cristopher Cespedes batting, wild pitch by Luis Silva, Bryan Torres to 2nd. With Cristopher Cespedes batting, Bryan Torres steals (1) 3rd base. With Cristopher Cespedes batting, throwing error by Erick Gonzalez on the pickoff attempt, Bryan Torres scores. Cristopher Cespedes strikes out swinging. -

DSL Phillies White 5, DSL Brewers 4 DSL Brewers Boxscore First thing, the DSL Reds' second team is called the DSL Rojos - why isn't this Phillies team called the Philly Blancos? Anyway, the Blancos took the 5-0 advantage through five innings, and a rally by the home team was not quite enough, as the Brewers' squad fell 5-4. The Brewers out-hit the Phillies 11-10, out-walked the Philles 4-1, and played errorless baseball. That usually amounts to a win in this league. Top prospects Jean Carmona and Pablo Abreu keep, somewhat refreshingly, doing their thing. Carmona's three hits pushed his average to a team high .321 (save for MIA Ernesto Martinez's .667). He also added his sixth walk on the year. Abreu went 1-4 with a walk. Anderson Melendez and Luis Avalo added two hits apiece. Avalo's double was the Brewers' only XBH, and his average is up over .300 as well, to .311. Ex-restricted lister Jose Luis Romero got his first career start, and allowed four runs over 2 2/3 innings. Guillermo Paulino allowed a run in his 2 1/3 innings. Jeison Medina and Oscar Brito allowed four hits and nothing else over the final 4 innings. DSL Brewers Game Log Romero almost got out of this: DSL Phillies White Top of the 3rd Julio Francisco singles on a ground ball to second baseman Victor Maria. With Nicolas Torres batting, Julio Francisco advances to 2nd on a balk. Nicolas Torres singles on a ground ball to left fielder Francis Florentino. Julio Francisco to 3rd. Nicolas Torres to 2nd on the throw. Jose Tortolero lines out to second baseman Victor Maria. Yerwin Trejo pops out to second baseman Victor Maria. Juan Mendez singles on a ground ball to right fielder Anderson Melendez. Julio Francisco scores. Nicolas Torres scores. Pitching Change: Guillermo Paulino replaces Jose Romero. With Alexito Feliz batting, Juan Mendez steals (1) 2nd base. With Alexito Feliz batting, passed ball by Joel Munoz, Juan Mendez to 3rd. Alexito Feliz grounds out, shortstop Jean Carmona to first baseman Luis Avalo. -
