  1. Final: AZL Brewers Blue 4, AZL Royals 3 AZL Brewers Blue Box Score Back-to-back home runs from Alex Hall and Kevin Hardin in the 6th provided enough cushion for a pitching staff that gave up only one earned run and the Blues improve to 2-4. This is only the second time that Hardin has not had two hits, in this his fifth professional game. The 20-year-old 33rd rounder, native of Knob Noster, Missouri, and generally big dude (6'5, 245) does have a five-game hit streak to begin his pro career. Arbert Cipion, Luis Silva (still just 17), and the aforementioned Aussie Hall all chipped in two hits. Hall also now has now caught five runners attempting to steal in eight attempts. Starting pitcher Ian Exposito made his pro debut after signing as a nondrafted free agent and lefty acquitted himself well, allowing a run in 4 IP. A quartet of relivers pitched earned-runless ball over the final five innings, though a few errors did conspire to allow a two unearned runs to cross the plate. AZL Brewers Blue Game Log Back-to-back: AZL Brewers Blue Bottom of the 6th Alex Hall homers (1) on a fly ball to right field. Kevin Hardin homers (1) on a fly ball to right field. Cam Devanney pops out to second baseman Herard Gonzalez. YongKang Kou strikes out swinging. Orveo Saint called out on strikes.
  2. Final: AZL Athletics Gold 11, AZL Brewers Gold 1 AZL Brewers Gold Box Score Not great. Tyrone Taylor scores. Jesus Chirinos grounds out, shortstop Elvis Peralta to first baseman Kyle McCann.
  3. Final: AZL D-Backs 3, AZL Brewers Blue 2 AZL Brewers Blue Box Score Jhoan Cruz pitched well but gave up back-to-back home runs in the second, which is all the offense the D-Backs would need to win the game. 36th rounder Keegan McCarville made his pro mountain debut with three good innings. 1B Kevin Hardin kept his batting average at .500 with a 2-4 day. AZL Brewers Blue Game Log Doom: AZL D-backs Bottom of the 2nd Sandy Martinez called out on strikes. Corbin Carroll singles on a ground ball to right fielder Anderson Melendez. 5. Final: AZL Brewers Blue 2, AZL Mariners 0 AZL Brewers Blue Box Score Starter Nick Belzer made a heck of a first impression in his pro debut, throwing 7 innings of 2-hit ball. Converted catcher Jeyner Baez then pitched 2 hitless innings as the Blues picked up their first win in shutout style. 33rd rounder Kevin Hardin continued to make a great impression as well, collecting two more hits, which gives him 5 hits (3 doubles) in his first 10 pro ABs. RF Anderson Melendez and CF Terence Doston each notched two hits as well. AZL Brewers Blue Game Log All the offense: AZL Brewers Blue Top of the 5th Kevin Hardin singles on a ground ball to center fielder Sebastian Ochoa. Anderson Melendez triples (1) on a line drive to right fielder Luis Veloz. Kevin Hardin scores. YongKang Kou out on a sacrifice fly to left fielder Johnny Slater. Anderson Melendez scores. Orveo Saint called out on strikes. Terence Doston grounds out, second baseman Cody Grosse to first baseman Edwin Gil.
  6. Indeed. I mean, the blog goes into detail as to how teams are putting together deals that make sense in the $/WAR framework, and this is just one article of many on the topic. It’s research, it’s not been put out there to have quotes from GMs.
  7. Final: AZL Padres1 3, AZL Brewers Gold 2 AZL Brewers Gold Box Score Despite multi-hit games from Jesus Chirinos, Francis Florentino, and Daniel Castillo, the Golds were only able to plate two runs and fell to 1-2 on the year. Max Lazar pitched two innings to start the game after being limited to one inning in his first AZL start. There were pro pitching debuts from Brock Begue (11th round), Peyton Long (30th round), and Zach Vennaro (NDFA). AZL Brewers Gold Game Log Tying run got to third with one out, but: AZL Brewers Gold Top of the 9th Daniel Castillo doubles (1) on a line drive to left fielder Yordi Francisco. Wild pitch by pitcher Edgar Martinez. Daniel Castillo to 3rd. Felix Valerio strikes out swinging. Oswel Leones triples (1) on a line drive to center fielder Payton Smith. Daniel Castillo scores. Abimael Gonzalez strikes out swinging. Ashton McGee strikes out swinging.
  8. Final: AZL White Sox 11, AZL Brewers Blue 10 (14 innings) AZL Brewers Blue Box Score It was a pretty wild (and long) end to the game, but the Blues remain winless after falling in 14 innings. SS Cam Devanney and RF Anderson Melendez each had 3 hits. Five pitchers and infielder Luis Silva combined to allow just 4 earned runs over 14 innings. AZL Brewers Blue Game Log The decisive 14th: AZL White Sox Top of the 14th Daniel Millwee starts inning at 2nd base. Tyler Osik lines out to shortstop Cam Devanney. Tom Archer reaches on a fielding error by shortstop Cam Devanney. Daniel Millwee to 3rd. Misael Gonzalez singles on a line drive to center fielder Arbert Cipion. Daniel Millwee scores. DJ Gladney grounds into a double play, third baseman Jackie Urbaez to second baseman Victor Vargas to first baseman YongKang Kou. Josue Guerrero out at 2nd. DJ Gladney out at 1st. AZL Brewers Blue Bottom of the 14th Caleb Marquez starts inning at 2nd base. YongKang Kou singles on a bunt ground ball to first baseman Tyler Osik. Caleb Marquez to 3rd. Anderson Melendez out on a sacrifice fly to right fielder Josue Guerrero. Caleb Marquez scores. Victor Vargas pops out to third baseman DJ Gladney. Terence Doston strikes out swinging.
  9. I still think it's a possibility if that's the way the Brewers want to proceed. And if that's the way the Brewers want to proceed, we'll start seeing him in shorter outings. I say that because his struggles pretty much started after the Brewers pushed him to 75 pitches. If the Brewers' intent is to keep him on track as a starter, we won't see him in Milwaukee.
  10. INF Blake Allemand has been placed on the Missions' 7-day IL in order to make room for Luke Barker.
  11. RHP Matt Smith has been placed on Carolina's 7-day IL. SS Trever Morrison, freshly un-retired, has been transferred from the Rocky Mountain roster to Carolina.
  12. Final: AZL Mariners 9, AZL Brewers Gold 4 AZL Brewers Gold Box Score Starting pitcher Wilber Diaz struggled with command, debuting reliever Mario Perez gave up a grand slam, and the offense couldn't dig out of that hole to follow up their opening day win. RF Oswel Leones and 3B Victor Maria each collected two hits. We saw pro debuts from NDFA C Juan Martinez, 37th round LF Abimael Gonzalez, 35th round 2B Odrick Pitre, and 38th round RHP Eli Nabholz. Martinez, Gonzalez, and Pitre all went 1-4 with Gonzalez' hit being a double. Nabholz pitched a clean 9th. CF Tyrone Taylor began his rehab assignment and went 1-2. By the way, Mario Perez is the youngest stateside player in the Brewers' system. He doesn't turn 18 until next April. AZL Brewers Gold Game Log
  13. Final: AZL Royals 12, AZL Brewers Blue 7 AZL Brewers Blue Box Score While the Blues scored one more run than the previous night, they gave up 12 for the second night in a row to drop to 0-2 on the young season. The offense received two-hit contributions from CF Arbert Cipion, SS Cam Devanney, and DH Victor Vargas. LF Jackie Urbaez was on base three times again, with a single and two walks. 33rd rounder Kevin Hardin, playing first base, doubled and was hit by a pitch in his pro debut. Exciting young righty Alexis Ramirez has a rough stateside debut, allowing 8 runs, all earned, in 3.1 innings. This included a second-inning grand slam. Things will get better. Chinese import Jian Yi made his pro debut and fared marginally better, allowing 2 runs while recording 5 outs. Jeyner Baez, who was a catcher in the Nationals system from 2014-2018, was signed this past offseason and converted into a pitcher. In his debut as a full-time hurler, Baez acquitted himself pretty well by allowing an earned run in 3 innings. AZL Brewers Blue Game Log The guys managed to tie it in the third: AZL Brewers Blue Top of the 3rd Victor Vargas singles on a line drive to left fielder Darryl Collins. Victor Vargas out at 2nd on the throw, left fielder Darryl Collins to second baseman Herard Gonzalez. Arbert Cipion grounds out, shortstop Enrique Valdez to first baseman Diego Maican. Jackie Urbaez singles on a ground ball to second baseman Herard Gonzalez. Luis Silva reaches on a fielding error by center fielder Diego Hernandez. Jackie Urbaez to 3rd. Alex Hall doubles (1) on a fly ball to left fielder Darryl Collins. Jackie Urbaez scores. Luis Silva scores. Alex Hall to 3rd. Cam Devanney singles on a ground ball to left fielder Darryl Collins. Alex Hall scores. Cam Devanney steals (2) 2nd base. Kevin Hardin strikes out swinging.
  14. I generally disagree with using rankings to try to suss out value. I'd guess beyond the top 20-40 players, there's pretty strong variance in player ranking. OFP/FV grades, on the other hand, are almost always pretty consistent across a half dozen or more evaluations.
  15. I'd argue that the surplus value is more of an argument for who the Brewers *shouldn't* trade than who they should trade. If the Brewers value Lutz at 50 or 55 OFP for calculating his value, they flat shouldn't trade him for Smith. It's a bad deal. I need to update my OFP reports, but currently, I have 12 Brewers at a 45 OFP. And the Giants may value one or more of those players more highly than the Brewers do, and if a deal happens, that's probably where agreement is made. Player(s) the Brewers value under 50 OFP, but the Giants value more than the Brewers. Pretty sure this is what happened with the Schoop deal. It seems the Brewers didn't actually internally value Luis Ortiz highly at all, or at least nearly as highly as the Orioles did.
  16. They would seem to, even if it's not the exact way we can use publically available data.
  17. If Smith has $10.2MM excess value, Lutz by himself would be a pretty big overpay. Driveline values a 45 OFP prospect at $10.5MM and Lutz is an across the board 50-55 OFP. Even just at 50 OFP, Lutz' value is nearly $26MM. Dubon for Smith or Feliciano plus a DSL flyer for Smith would seem to work value-wise. Maybe Supak and Francis.
  18. Final: DSL Cubs1 8, DSL Brewers/Indians 6 DSL Brewers/Indians Box Score 1B Francisco Gonzalez was a home run short of the cycle and 2B Carlos Roa added a double and a triple, but a late collapse by Indians pitchers sent the co-op to their 11th loss in 15 games. The starting pitcher was Brewers' prospect Leony Rosario, who pitched well and allowed just one run over 5 innings. DSL Brewers/Indians Game Log With a four-run deficit heading into the top of the 9th, there was a comeback but not quite enough: DSL Indians/Brewers Top of the 9th Carlos Roa pops out to second baseman Juan Mora. Junior Sanquintin walks. Francisco Gonzalez singles on a ground ball to center fielder Josue Fernandez. Junior Sanquintin to 2nd. Jose Baez singles on a ground ball to shortstop Rafael Morel. Junior Sanquintin to 3rd. Francisco Gonzalez to 2nd. Bryan Nino strikes out swinging. Luis Valderrama reaches on a fielding error by third baseman Nestor Heredia. Junior Sanquintin scores. Francisco Gonzalez scores. Jose Baez to 2nd. Offensive Substitution: Pinch-hitter Jeicor Cristian replaces Bryan Dimas. Passed ball by catcher Miguel Fabrizio. Jose Baez to 3rd. Luis Valderrama to 2nd. Jeicor Cristian called out on strikes.
  19. Final: DSL Brewers 8, DSL Cardinals Red 6 DSL Brewers Box Score The Brewers beat the Cardinals and move to 6-9, nice. 2B Sebastian Burciaga, who started his pro career on an 0-19 skid, has gone 5-11 since then including a 3-5 performance today. LF Reidy Mercado went 3-5 too and stole his 11th and 12th bases of the season. RF Rafael Martinez hit his first pro home run as part of a two-hit effort, and C Farlyn Manon smacked two doubles. Starting pitcher Kleiber Bordones was effective, allowing 2 runs in 4 innings of work. Panamanian righty Ariel Vega picked up his first pro win with 2 scoreless innings to close out the game. DSL Brewers Game Log 16-year-old phenom Eduardo Garcia missed a week earlier this season with an undisclosed injury, and was removed from today's game following this: DSL Brewers Top of the 6th Pitching Change: Hancel Rincon replaces Edgar Manzo. Eduarqui Fernandez grounds out, third baseman Luis Andujar to first baseman Roblin Heredia. Eduardo Garcia walks. Reidy Mercado grounds into a double play, shortstop Bryan Matute to first baseman Roblin Heredia. Eduardo Garcia out at 2nd. Reidy Mercado out at 1st.

  21. I watched most of the Vibes game last night and I usually don't get too upset about minor league games, but that was torture to get through. More than one "throw a (naughty word) strike!!" was issued at the screen.
  22. RHP Jose Espiritu has been transferred from the DSL club to the AZL Gold roster. Recently signed C Nader Garcia replaces Espiritu on the DSL roster. RHP Franklin Hernandez has been placed on Rocky Mountain's Restricted list as he continues serving his PED suspension. INF Julio Mendez has been placed on Rocky Mountain's 60-day IL. You'll recall Mendez was the player who was hit in the chest with a pitch back in 2017 and nearly died on the field due to a resulting cardiac incident.
  23. Injury List transactions for the AZL clubs: 7-day IL RHP Luis Gonzalez (Gold) RHP Lun Zhao (Blue) 60-day IL RHP Wade Beasley (Gold) RHP Tate Budnick (Blue) RHP Breiner Carvajal (Gold) LHP Dantel Ramirez (Gold) OF Alwinson Valdez (Blue)
  24. Final: AZL Brewers Gold 6, AZL Indians Red 4 (10 innings) AZL Brewers Gold Box Score An all-Latin lineup except for Larry Ernesto's injury replacement and an all-Latin pitching performance except for rehabbing starter Max Lazar lead the Golds to a win in the first game of existence. DH Aaron Familia had a rough go of it in his 2018 AZL campaign but came out firing on Monday, collecting 4 hits including a double and 3 RBI. LF Oswel Leones and SS Daniel Castillo each added two hits as well. I mentioned Larry Ernesto had an injury replacement. After doubling to lead off the game, he was removed after advancing to third base with a "leg issue." His replacement was the game's only pro debut, 27th round pick Zane Zurbrugg. Brayan Salaya pitched 5 innings in relief of Lazar, allowing 3 earned runs. He was backed up by AZL veteran Jose Parra and AZL newcomer Daniel Acosta. Acosta pitched a perfect 10th inning, which is notable because in 53 prior career appearances, all in the DSL, Acosta has managed to not walk a batter exactly 6 times. Make it 7 now. AZL Brewers Gold Game Log Also a good start, except for Larry: AZL Brewers Gold Top of the 1st Larry Ernesto doubles (1) on a ground ball to right fielder Cesar Idrogo. Felix Valerio reaches on a throwing error by third baseman Jothson Flores. Larry Ernesto to 3rd. Offensive Substitution: Pinch-runner Zane Zurbrugg replaces Larry Ernesto. Oswel Leones singles on a fly ball to left fielder Marlin Made. Zane Zurbrugg scores. Felix Valerio to 2nd. Jesus Chirinos flies out to center fielder Alexfri Planez. Felix Valerio to 3rd. Oswel Leones steals (1) 2nd base. Francis Florentino strikes out swinging. Felix Valerio scores. Oswel Leones to 3rd. Francis Florentino to 1st. Wild pitch by pitcher Brauny Munoz. Francis Florentino caught stealing 2nd base, catcher Yainer Diaz to second baseman Andruw Monasterio. Aaron Familia singles on a line drive to left fielder Marlin Made. Oswel Leones scores. Victor Maria grounds into a force out, fielded by second baseman Andruw Monasterio. Aaron Familia out at 2nd.
  25. Final: AZL Dodgers1 12, AZL Brewers Blue 6 AZL Brewers Blue Box Score The Brewers took a 4-3 lead after one inning, but a withering Dodgers attack (including 25th overall pick Kody Hoese, who is in the AZL for some reason) resulted in inaugural heartbreak for the Blues. CF Arbert Cipion, who struggled mightily at the plate last year after being picked in the 9th round, lead the offense with 3 hits including a triple. Aussie catcher Alex Hall, 17-year-old Venezuelan 3B Luis Silva, and recent 29th round and opening day DH Jackie Urbaez all added two hits. Blue pitching had its issues, but 2018 DSLer Moises Ruiz and 2019 21st round pick Eddy Tavarez each logged scoreless appearances. In addition to Urbaez and Tavarez, we saw pro debuts from SS Cam Devanney (15th round), 1B YongKang Kou (China), and LF Terence Doston (22nd round). Finally: it appears that Pablo Garabitos, drafted in the 25th round last year out of a Florida HS as an outfielder, is now a left-handed pitcher. Here's a scouting report from PBR on Garabitos the pitcher from 10/24/17: The South Florida recruit, was up to 88 mph for Team MVP from a near over the top arm slot. It was his secondary pitches, however, that separate him, some, from his peers as he shows advanced feel for both a 1/7 curveball (72-74) as well as a changeup. Garabitos’ curveball features tight spin and multi-tier break, and his changeup is thrown with fastball hand speed and has late-fading action. AZL Brewers Blue Game Log A good start: AZL Brewers Blue Bottom of the 1st Arbert Cipion singles on a line drive to center fielder Ismael Alcantara. Luis Silva singles on a ground ball to third baseman Kody Hoese. Arbert Cipion to 2nd. Cam Devanney hit by pitch. Arbert Cipion to 3rd. Luis Silva to 2nd. Alex Hall singles on a line drive to right fielder Danny Sinatro. Arbert Cipion scores. Luis Silva to 3rd. Cam Devanney to 2nd. Anderson Melendez hit by pitch. Luis Silva scores. Cam Devanney to 3rd. Alex Hall to 2nd. YongKang Kou strikes out swinging. Jackie Urbaez hits a ground-rule double (1) on a fly ball to right field. Cam Devanney scores. Alex Hall scores. Anderson Melendez to 3rd. Victor Vargas pops out to third baseman Kody Hoese. Terence Doston strikes out swinging.
