  1. With the seventh pick in the draft, the Arizona Diamondbacks select Adam Haseley, OF, Virgina. Here's the break down of the votes. Haseley - 9 Bukauskas - 2 Baz - 2 Peterson - 1 The Philadelphia Phillies are on the clock. Please vote by 9:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 8.
  2. Anderson, Nelson and Davies pitching well of late. Guerra is back. Garza hasn't been terrible (although he hasn't been healthy the last week). While that rotation doesn't scare many, it's in a better spot than earlier this year. If the starting pitching can keep up their recent improvements, that will help the bullpen as well - who have had to pitch a lot of innings.
  3. Good for Scooter - but in the end, I don't really care. I believe it's important to keep tabs on guys you give up on for a couple of reasons. One, you want to understand if the move was the right move - a way to help you evaluate future decisions. And second, you do want to hold decision makers accountable in the long run. Poor - or good - decisions need to kept in some sort of ledger as part of a holistic evaluation of our braintrust. But in the end, I don't care about the guy, and it's pointless and defeating to sit around and moan about what might have been. After all, nothing can be done once a move has been made. We can't go back and redo it - so complaining over and over again, or always pointing out when the guy does well, or when his replacement doesn't do well - accomplishes nothing. Go back to the root of the situation - the move is done. End of story. Dwelling on the decision does not change what has happened. I'm not saying a person can't root for a former player they liked. Or lament a decision the team made. It's human nature to talk about 'what ifs'. But ultimately, you have to move on. Complaining repeatedly about something that we have no control over is just and exercise in futility.
  4. The Brewers are doing exactly what they should be doing. They assembled a staff they thought could get them through the year - and are reacting accordingly. They have given guys plenty of chances - and moved on as needed. Milone (who I don't think anyone could really defend as a signing) is gone. Marinez is gone (last season's decent play doesn't trump a career of mediocrity). Peralta has five or six outings in the bullpen. It is going to take time to assess him. They've taken chances on Scahill and Drake. Those guys are likely being evaluating everyday. Torres, Feliz and Hughes are probably in the same boat - but with longer leashes. People seem to forget that Torres was really good last year (82 relief innings, 2.73 ERA). Feliz wasn't a bad player last year either. And Hughes had three straight seasons (2014-16) with an ERA 3.03 or under. I believe it is short sighted to give up on players who have produced as recently as these guys. I'm not saying any are great - but there are reasons to keep them around. Ultimately, I think it's counterproductive to cutting guys left and right and just throwing in whatever arms you can conjure up. Now, I'm not defending Feliz or Hughes or whomever. I honestly haven't watched enough games to judge them. Of course, we have stats. But they don't always tell the full story - especially only 1/3 of the way through the season. In the end, each player has to give the Brewers a reason to keep them around despite their poor performance. If the team believes Feliz is a lost cause - then by all means - cut him and bring up someone new. But if they see a path to recover - it is probably smart to give them a bit more time. That's my opinion.
  5. I want to thank everyone who has participated in our mock draft. I've found it an interesting exercise. Just a few more selections until the Brewers - then the real draft on Monday, June 12. Should be fun.
  6. Selections to date: 1 - Tuesday, May 30 - Minnesota Twins - Kyle Wright, RHP, Vanderbilt 2 - Wednesday, May 31 - Cincinnati Reds - Brendan McKay, LHP/1B, Louisville 3 - Thursday, June 1 - San Diego Padres - Hunter Greene, RHP/SS, Notre Dame (Calif.) HS 4 - Friday, June 2 - Tampa Bay Rays - Royce Lewis - SS/OF, JSerra Catholic (Calif.) HS 5 - Monday, June 5 - Atlanta Braves - MacKenzie Gore, LHP, Whiteville (N.C.) HS 6 - Tuesday, June 6 - Oakland Athletics - Pavin Smith, 1B, Virginia 7 - Wednesday, June 7 - Arizona Diamondbacks 8 - Thursday, June 8 - Philadelphia Phillies 9 - Friday, June 9 - Milwaukee Brewers
  7. With the sixth pick in the draft, the Oakland A's select Pavin Smith, 1B, Virginia. This was a close one - and I think a bit of a surprise. Here's the breakdown: Smith: 6 votes Beck: 4 votes Bukauskas: 4 votes Haseley: 1 vote The Arizona Diamondbacks are on the clock. Please make your pick by 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 7.
  8. 1.6 - Pavin Smith I had a tough time with this one. I feel Oakland needs an offensive player in the system. I ended up focusing on college bats, which lead me to Pavin Smith and Adam Haseley. I think Oakland can really use the athleticism of Haseley, but I feel that Smith's bat has a better chance to be special. And Smith just seems like an Oakland kind of guy. So I went with him.
  9. Our bullpen sucks, but that should surprise no one. I mean look at the guys we have used - Scahill, Torres, Hughes, Feliz, Marinez, Milone, Drake. With the exception of Feliz, all these guys were rejects. The Brewers came into 2017 with the attitude of a rebuilding club. That they've done better than expected has been nice, but let's face it - no one expected us to contend this year - including Stearns. Some of the players - like Torres and (we had hoped) Feliz - are there to help provide a little stability in the bullpen. Maybe they have a good year and can be flipped for an asset or two. Who knows. But they aren't long term players for this club. This year is about finding out what guys like Knebel and Barnes can do. Maybe unearth a nugget that others have missed on (guys like Marinez and Drake fall in this category). The club was always going to churn through a lot of these types. That we had to do it while we were playing well is really unfortunate. And that some of the veterans have pitched poorly only adds to the frustration. The main thing is there is no real option other than our minor league players. It's foolish to overpay for a bullpen arm when the club isn't that good (at least in my opinion). I'd just rather see our minor league guys get an actual chance. I don't expect a lot (if anything), but I'd rather see a guy like Wang or Suter or Cravy get some regular playing time rather than trot our Feliz or Hughes.
  10. Results thus far... 1 - Tuesday, May 30 - Minnesota Twins - Kyle Wright, RHP, Vanderbilt 2 - Wednesday, May 31 - Cincinnati Reds - Brendan McKay, LHP/1B, Louisville 3 - Thursday, June 1 - San Diego Padres - Hunter Greene, RHP/SS, Notre Dame (Calif.) HS 4 - Friday, June 2 - Tampa Bay Rays - Royce Lewis - SS/OF, JSerra Catholic (Calif.) HS 5 - Monday, June 5 - Atlanta Braves - MacKenzie Gore, LHP, Whiteville (N.C.) HS 6 - Tuesday, June 6 - Oakland Athletics 7 - Wednesday, June 7 - Arizona Diamondbacks 8 - Thursday, June 8 - Philadelphia Phillies 9 - Friday, June 9 - Milwaukee Brewers
  11. With the fifth pick in the draft, the Atlanta Braves take MacKenzie Gore, LHP, Whiteville (N.C.) HS. Gore received 10 votes while Austin Beck received the other three votes. The Oakland A's are on the clock. You have until EOD on Tuesday, June 6 to make your selection.
  12. Fangraphs mock draft: http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/fangraphs-2017-mock-draft/ They have the Brewers taking Jo Adell
  13. Why stop at a couple days? Why not a month? The 1980's were the middle ages? Oh yeah the feminization of America is a 21st century thing. Please stop right there. This is the not the time or forum for this kind of discussion. And please, everyone else just refrain from responding to this kind of thing. This is not what this forum is for.
  14. Right now, I'm hoping Bukauskas drops to the Brewers. That would be a great addition. Many people had the A's picking Bukauskas - but I am thinking the A's will go Pavin Smith. He seems like an Oakland kind of guy.
  15. Draft results to to date: 1 - Tuesday, May 30 - Minnesota Twins - Kyle Wright, RHP, Vanderbilt 2 - Wednesday, May 31 - Cincinnati Reds - Brendan McKay, LHP/1B, Louisville 3 - Thursday, June 1 - San Diego Padres - Hunter Greene, RHP/SS, Notre Dame (Calif.) HS 4 - Friday, June 2 - Tampa Bay Rays - Royce Lewis - SS/OF, JSerra Catholic HS (Calif.) 5 - Monday, June 5 - Atlanta Braves 6 - Tuesday, June 6 - Oakland Athletics 7 - Wednesday, June 7 - Arizona Diamondbacks 8 - Thursday, June 8 - Philadelphia Phillies 9 - Friday, June 9 - Milwaukee Brewers
  16. With the 4th pick in the 2017 draft, Tampa Bay selects SS/OF Royce Lewis of JSerra Catholic High School in California. This was a tight vote, with Lewis edging out MacKenzie Gore 8 to 6. Adam Haseley got the only other vote on this pick. The Atlanta Braves are now on the clock. You have until EOD on Monday, June 5, to make your selection. Thanks to everyone for participating thus far.
  17. I don't know what the offer was, but it was over slot in an attempt to lure him away from college. Not sure if he just didn't want to play for Milwaukee, or the money wasn't quite enough, or he just really wanted to go to college. I believe he was seen as a 2nd round pick at the time - but that's just my memory.
  18. There are none on the team other than Braun. There are other guys around the league that we drafted and are playing in the bigs - Khris Davis, Scooter, Lorenzo Cain, Lucroy. JJ Hardy, Michael Brantley, Brett Lawrie, Mitch Haniger. Weeks is still playing (I think). Probably missed a few guys.
  19. NL Relievers Averages vs Brewers Relievers ERA: 3.99 / 3.84 WHIP: 1.33 / 1.42 Wins: 8 / 9 Losses: 9 / 14 IP: 180 / 196.2 BB: 75 / 93 SO: 179 / 184 BA: .242 / .253 OPS: .713 / .755 OBP: .322 / .343 SLG: .391 / .412 K/BB: 2.43 / 1.98 K/9: 8.90 / 8.42 SB: 11 / 15 CS: 3 /2 Interestingly, the Brewers are below average in virtually every category - except ERA. We walk too many guys, we give up too many hits, and we give up too many extra base hits (Brewer relievers have given up the most doubles and triples in the league thus far). The bullpen has been overworked. We are second the league in IP for relievers. We give up big hits (doubles, triples, etc.). Some of things may simply be that Miller Park is a hitters park - for us and other teams. As for the low ERA - perhaps we've been a bit lucky. I don't know. All in all, I see a below average bullpen. Not historically awful, but not particularly good. Although I'd hate to see the numbers without Knebel.
  20. The problem is not simply with runners in scoring position - it's simply hitting in general. We just haven't been that good. Combine that with striking out a lot (at least lately), and it makes it easier to not drive in those runs. League Batting Average: 2017: 12th 2016: 25th 2015: 22nd 2014: 15th League Strike Out Totals (higher is worse): 2017: 29th 2016: 30th 2015: 21st 2014: 11th I'm just thinking that the extreme strike out heavy team we have is going to more likely lead to this kind of result. That's just a guess - don't know if it's true. Also, it doesn't help that we have a very young team. I'm guessing (and this is again - just a guess) that players who survive in this league and have been around the block a bit more have learned to adjust to their situation more than younger guys.
  21. Results thus far of the community mock draft: 1 - Tuesday, May 30 - Minnesota Twins - Kyle Wright, RHP, Vanderbilt 2 - Wednesday, May 31 - Cincinnati Reds - Brendan McKay, LHP/1B, Louisville 3 - Thursday, June 1 - San Diego Padres - Hunter Greene, RHP/SS, Notre Dame (Calif.) HS 4 - Friday, June 2 - Tampa Bay Rays 5 - Monday, June 5 - Atlanta Braves 6 - Tuesday, June 6 - Oakland Athletics 7 - Wednesday, June 7 - Arizona Diamondbacks 8 - Thursday, June 8 - Philadelphia Phillies 9 - Friday, June 9 - Milwaukee Brewers
  22. With the 3rd pick in the draft, the San Diego Padres select RHP/SS Hunter Greene from Notre Dame (Calif.) High School. I pulled the trigger on this pick a couple of hours early as Greene was the unanimous selection of BF.net users - the first time we have had a unanimous pick since we started doing this last year. The Tampa Bay Rays are on the clock. Please note that you have until EOD on Sunday, June 4, to make this pick.
