  1. A person I know with some connections to the Brewers told me about a year ago that there was a lot of talk within the organization that Lopez was destined for the bullpen. His fine 2015 aside, he's never developed much beyond a two pitch guy (fastball/curveball). The thought is that if he can just continue to refine and repeat those pitches, he could be a great reliever. Now, the team was good waiting to see if Lopez could develop a better change up and better command - but this season has been mixed. Add in the need for relievers.... well, there you go. There was a nice article on Brew Crew Ball about Lopez and his potential bullpen role just a few days ago. https://www.brewcrewball.com/2017/6/26/15876944/milwaukee-brewers-may-be-preparing-jorge-lopez-for-a-role-in-the-bullpen
  2. I have heard from a source that Harrison and Lutz have agreed to deals. At or near slot. Assumes no issues with physicals or someone has second thoughts.
  3. So glad our pitchers get to hit. Guerra hasn't been the same since his injury. Now Anderson. Both as hitters. Sucks.
  4. Nice play to rob Vogt of an HR. Would've been sweet.
  5. High altitude has some definite effects on a ball. For pitchers, a breaking ball will break less. For balls hit into play, they go further than a similarly hit ball at other parks. The Rockies website claims a ball hit at Coors Field will travel 9% further - but I think that was pre-humidor days. You certainly get a lot of high winds in Colorado - I lived there for five years, so I experienced it. But I think the altitude - and the effects on the ball - are the big thing. http://colorado.rockies.mlb.com/col/ballpark/history.jsp
  6. At age 34, I'd be wary. He's been mediocre 3 of the last 4 years. I know it's easy to focus on last season - when he was excellent. But the inconsistency is a warning. He has the worst WHIP of his career - and the worst walk rate. Verlander is owed $70M over the next 2.5 seasons. I just think it's too much to take on for someone who is aging - and showing some red flags this year with his performance.
  7. As a note, Verlander has full no-trade protection as a 10-5 guy.
  8. If I understand the waiver process it starts in the NL with the worst records of the previous year. That would mean that if he isn't traded we would have near the first crack at him? Montero is making $14M this year. No one will claim him because they'd be responsible for the rest the deal (about $7M). Someone could make a trade with the Cubs, and say, "We'll cover $1M of his salary - you pay the other $6M" and we'll give you a non-prospect. Such a move would save the Cubs a little money. Montero's bat isn't bad - so an AL team might have interest - back up catcher/DH. The likely situation is Montero passes through waivers, is released, and just shops around for a decent fit for the rest of the year. In that case, an AL team might give him the most playing time.
  9. Dude just burned too many bridges.
  10. I saw that Montero is 0-31 in throwing out runners this year. So it's not just Arrieta's fault (although Arrieta is slow to the plate). If Montero was hitting poorly, I would expect him to be released. Calling out your pitcher - even if he was playing poorly - is just not something you do publicly like that. I mean, it's one thing to say, "Hey, we need to get better at holding the runners on. Speeding up our delivery - and throwing the guys out." But to just blame the pitcher is weird. But Montero is hitting well this year - so I doubt something like that happens. And right after I posted, Rizzo took a shot at Montero. Called him selfish. http://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/19758582/cubs-anthony-rizzo-admonishes-miguel-montero-jake-arrieta-comments

  12. Yeah, I keep waiting for the other shoe to drop. I probably won't really fully believe unless the calendar turns to September and we're in 1st. Call it 2014 syndrome, or whatever. Can't blame you for that! You went up like a rocket early on. The way you're going this year is more realistic. The Cubs are showing signs of stablizing but do still appear to be human. I think the key is to beat the North Siders when you play 'em. (both teams should feast on the other 3) Dead Simmons, how's the rumblings down in St. Louis? Any excitement? Is Matheny at risk? Just curious. Thanks.
  13. THIS is the post I've been waiting for. So if your theory is correct, I would assume we sign the majority of those guys in the teen rounds. I'm guessing, then, that McClanahan had a much higher grade than where he was drafted at to command that amount of a bonus last year? So these guys would be more Payton Henry than Chad McClanahan. McClanahan was ranked #122 by MLB Pipeline last year. I don't know what other places ranked him, but on that ranking he is on par with Campbell. So the other guys on the list - like Ward - are probably not going to get as much as McClanahan (who got $1.2M). I don't know if McClanahan's ranking was affected by his reported strong commitment to Arizona St. - but I don't think that's how it works. But we definitely paid him well to forego his college commitment.
  14. Their main competition, the Yankees, were hitting a pitcher 3rd that season which was silly A retired pitcher at that.
  15. I'm just guessing, but I don't know if there is any player unsigned (not counting the guys who have firmly said they are going to college) that we'd throw a ton of money at. Je'Von Ward is probably the most interesting player - but his ranking of around 200 (he was #233 by BA and #194 by MLP Pipeline) would have netted him around $220,000 if he had actually been picked in that slot. So I'm just guessing that the team is going to sign several of these guys - but not for $1M or anything. It'll be $300,000 here, $200,000 there, etc. Of course, all bets are off if Campbell or Jacobsen show a willingness to sign.
  16. Brewers should end up with about $1.2M to play with for the guys drafted 11-18 that remain unsigned/uncommitted.
  17. Watch for Lutz and Harrison to sign soon.
  18. Jansen hasn't walked a batter all year. 50K in 29.2 IP. That's extraordinary.
  19. I don't have the game on -- can someone say why Anderson was pulled after 6 innings? He was only at 89 pitches. Was he just not looking that good? Just curious as to why he got the hook. Thanks.
  20. Arcia sees an average of 3.51 pitcher per at bat. That ranks 150 out of 162 qualified hitters in the majors. Ranked at #161 is Hernan Perez. We should note that being low on the list doesn't necessarily make you bad. Jose Altuve is #155. Daniel Murphy is #152. So there are some good players who are very aggressive.
  21. The guys you are offering up have little value, but I guess you can try. Maybe Beane will see something in them and value them more than we do. I'd take Madson over any of the three unless you think Doolittle is healthy. The latter has really struggled staying on the field the last few years. Madson is a solid guy - nothing great, but he'd be an asset. Daniel Coulombe has less than 1/2 of a season as a good player - so I just don't know if he's actually okay, or on a nice streak. I guess that's where the scouts would have to make the call.
  22. I was wondering if they'd just leave Monte alone for the an entire year - let him settle in and have some success for a full season. Oh well, I guess if they think he's ready - go for it.
  23. Good for Corey. I hope he gets the record. Personally, it's not a big deal to me, but it would be a cool thing to be able to boast about.
  24. How about a 13 man staff. Pitchers are assigned to four men per game. They pitch every four days. That's 12 guys. The goal is to get each pitcher to go through the line up once - roughly 2.1 inning per game. This way you rarely have a guy being seen by the other team more than once in a game. You have a 13th man - a rubber arm guy - maybe even a crappy knuckleballer. His job is to pitch whenever and wherever needed. Extra innings? Give him the ball the entire time. Injury? Send him in. Just spitballing an idea.
