A while back in an online chat with Dave Cameron at Fangraphs, someone asked who he thinks would be a good candidate to be converted from a bad/mediocre starter to a good/excellent reliever. He answered Nelson. I think (and this is going by memory, so I might be wrong), he's felt that Nelson doesn't have a good 3rd pitch. And his other offerings just aren't that good to overcome that. Combine that with mediocre control - says bullpen.

Battery Powers Third Straight Win, 7-3 Sky Sox club three home runs in four-run fourth inning. Victor Roache traded to the Dodgers
Matt Breen replied to TURBO's topic in Brewers Minor League Talk
He was high on draft boards after he hit a ridiculous 30 HRs in 230 ABs his Sophomore year. Then his Junior year he started out hot, but broke his wrist 6 games in. Rewind and I bet in the draft thread everyone loved that pick. Can't believe after such success in college he couldn't hit anywhere in the minors. Wrist injury must have really effected him. Wrist injuries are difficult - and I think the big thing was that Victor was pretty much a one trick pony. He had power. He was not viewed as particularly athletic. He was not seen as having a great hit tool. Plus, there was some question to just how much power Roache really did have - as he had done a lot of his damage in a weaker baseball conference in college (the Southern Conference). Still, 30 HR was a huge number. In the end, in addition to the injuries and lack of athleticism, I don't think he ever adjusted to breaking balls - but he wouldn't be the first guy for that to happen. -
Welcome to the Brewerfan.net 2017 Community Mock Draft. HS 4 - Friday, June 2 - Tampa Bay Rays - Royce Lewis - SS/OF, JSerra Catholic (Calif.) HS 5 - Monday, June 5 - Atlanta Braves - MacKenzie Gore, LHP, Whiteville (N.C.) Bukauskas, RHP, North Carolina 9 - Friday, June 9 - Milwaukee Brewers - Jo Adell, OF, Ballard (Ky.) HS On the date listed of each pick, simply post the name of the person you think will get picked. Do not pick who you want to select, or who you think is the best selection for that team. The idea is to predict the actual pick that the club would make at that time. The player with the most votes will be selected for that slot. Once a player is off the board, he can not be selected again. I will update this thread every day once each pick is made, so the name of the person drafted is in the list above. IMPORTANT: I am not asking you to submit a Top 10 list or any kind of list. This is like a real draft. On the day a pick is due, you come to the thread, and submit the pick for that day’s team only. So only May 30, you go online, go to the thread, hit REPLY and type in something like “Minnesota selects Hunter Greene at #1.” Or “1.1 - Brendan McKay”. You are welcome (even encouraged) to offer your opinion as to why you have made the pick - but you don’t have to. Take a look at last year’s thread if you have questions: viewtopic.php?f=69&t=34036 Otherwise, the best resource for the draft is the official BF.net Draft Thread - viewtopic.php?f=69&t=34173 - I encourage people to read this thread (especially the more recent posts) as there is a lot of conversations about specific prospects, links to mock drafts, etc. Notes: We are just doing the top nine picks - through Milwaukee. I thought it would be fun to build to the Brewer selection up to the actual draft day. I’ve avoided drafting on the weekend - except the final pick - the Brewer pick. We’ll have three full days to make the Brewer pick - thus letting as many people as possible participate in that momentous moment. I encourage people to come back every day - but if you miss a day or two or three - no big deal. Just come and jump back into making that day’s selection. If you have questions, just post them on the thread. Thanks.

Sky Sox Double Up Dodgers in 15-3 Romp Colorado Springs hits back-to-back home runs for first time since 2015. By Robby Veronesi / Colorado Springs Sky Sox Eric Sogard drove in three runs Friday night on a pair of doubles over his first three at-bats.(Photo: Paat Kelly) Colorado Springs Box Score 15 runs. 17 hits. Not a lot more is needed to be said about the Sky Sox barrage in a 15-3 crushing of the Oklahoma City Dodgers. Hitting highlights? Lots of them. Lewis Brinson (2-5, 2B), Eric Sogard (3-6, 2 2B), Ryan Cordell (3-5, 2B), Garrett Cooper (2-6, 2B, HR, 4 RBI), Kirk Nieuwenhuis (3-5, 2B, HR), Kyle Wren (2-4, BB) and Yadiel Rivera (2-5, 2B). And lets not forget the starting pitcher - Brent Suter went 2-3. In fact, all the starters had at least two hits - with the exception of Andrew Susac (1-5) - although Susac did drive in a pair of runs with his lone hit. On the mound, Suter (5.0 IP, 4 hits, 2 ER, 1 BB, 5 K) was solid, while the bullpen of Tyler Cravy (2.0 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 3K), Stephen Kolscheen (1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 3K) and Michael Blazek (1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 1K) finished off the laugher. The Sky Sox are hitting this year. Seven of the regulars (Brinson, Cooper, Wren, Rivera, Phillips, Cordell, Sogard) have a batting average of .295 or better. Ryan Cordell play 3B on Friday - the second time this year he has manned the hot corner. He has also played all three OF positions. No doubt the Brewers would like him to display as much versatility as possible. Colorado Springs Game Log This game was over early. The Sky Sox scored 13 runs in the first three innings. Col. Springs Top of the 1st Lewis Brinson doubles (6) on a line drive to left fielder O'Koyea Dickson. Eric Sogard doubles (7) on a line drive to left fielder O'Koyea Dickson. Lewis Brinson scores. Miscellaneous Farmhand Alumni Notes
Matt Breen replied to Jim Goulart's topic in Brewers Minor League Talk
As noted elsewhere, former #1 pick Jed Bradley has retired. Bradley did make the majors, logging 32 days of service last season. I'm a little surprised he didn't try to stick around a bit longer. If he had logged 11 more days of service, he would have qualified for a pension of $34,000 a year, starting at age 62. He does get health care for life - which is a nice benefit. His retirement is odd - I mean, he's only 26, and as a lefty, he still had time to develop into a serviceable player. Perhaps there was an injury or something that prompted the decision. -
Sky Sox Drop 6-2 Matinee Cooper reaches base twice, belts home run No. 4 By Robby Veronesi / Colorado Springs Sky Sox Garrett Cooper belted his fourth home run of the seas in the fourth inning Thursday afternoon in Oklahoma. (Photo: Paat Kelly) Colorado Springs Box Score The Sky Sox bats were stymied on Thursday afternoon, managing only three hits and pair of walks against the Oklahoma City Dodgers in a 6-2 lose. The main highlight for the Sky Sox was Garrett Cooper (1-3, BB, HR), who slugged his fourth HR of the season. On the mount, Hiram Burgos would get roughed up for five earned runs in five innings of work. He would take the lose. On the bright side, Wei-Chung Wang and Tristan Archer pitched the final three innings without surrounding any further runs. Colorado Springs Game Log The big blow came in the bottom of the 3rd, as the Dodgers used four hits, a walk and a Nate Orf error to score four runs. Okla. City Bottom of the 3rd Fabio Castillo called out on strikes. Trayce Thompson singles on a ground ball to right fielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis. Willie Calhoun doubles (7) on a ground ball to right fielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis. Trayce Thompson to 3rd. O'Koyea Dickson strikes out swinging. Brett Eibner walks. Sky Sox Score Five Straight in 6-3 Win Sox club three homers to back Hader's shutdown middle innings. By Colorado Springs Sky Sox Andrew Susac tied the game with a two-run homer for his first long ball of the season Wednesday night. (Photo: Paat Kelly) Colorado Springs Box Score Things didn’t start out well for Josh Hader on Wednesday night. He would surrender a home run in both the 1st and 2nd innings - as the Sky Sox fell behind the Oklahoma City Dodgers. But Hader would settle down and throw six innings of ball, giving up three runs on five hits and two walks. He would strike out four while getting the win. Tim Dillard would work the final three innings, yielding only one hit and striking out four, while earning the save. The Sky Sox would get home runs from Lewis Brinson (1-4), Ivan De Jesus Jr. (1-4) and Andrew Susac (1-4). Garrett Cooper (2-4, 2B) would add a pair of hits. Hader has already given up eight home runs in just 30 innings of work this year. It’s a disturbing trend, as Hader only gave up six HRs in all of 2016. Colorado Springs Game Log Colorado Springs scored two runs in the 5th and three more in 6th to seal this victory. The big blows were two-run home runs from Susac and De Jesus Jr. Col. Springs Top of the 5th Yadiel Rivera singles on a ground ball to center fielder Trayce Thompson. Andrew Susac homers (1) on a line drive to left center field. Yadiel Rivera scores. Josh Hader strikes out swinging. Lewis Brinson strikes out swinging. Eric Sogard grounds out, shortstop Charlie Culberson to first baseman Max Muncy. Col. Garrett Cooper singles on a line drive to right fielder Alex Verdugo. With Brett Phillips batting, passed ball by Bobby Wilson, Garrett Cooper to 2nd. Brett Phillips singles on a ground ball to right fielder Alex Verdugo. Garrett Cooper scores. Ivan De Jesus Jr. homers (1) on a fly ball to left field. Brett Phillips scores. Yadiel Rivera grounds out, second baseman Darnell Sweeney to first baseman Max Muncy. Andrew Susac grounds out, pitcher Jacob Rhame to first baseman Max Muncy. -

The walk rate is crazy as well. Last year his walk rate was 3.4%. This year it's 15%. -
Starting pitching depth was always a concern for Chicago. They still have a pretty loaded farm system, so yes, I bet the make a move at some point. Might not be until the deadline - but if they need a guy - they'll get him.

Sky Sox Survive Extra-Inning Marathon, 8-6 De Jesus and Kohlscheen record RBIs in 14th inning to finish 4:34 contest By Robby Veronesi / Colorado Springs Sky Sox After entering in the 10th inning as part of a double switch, Ivan De Jesus lined a two-out RBI triple in the 14th inning to plate the go-ahead run. (Photo: Paat Kelly) Colorado Springs Box Score It was a late one in Oklahoma City. Ivan De Jesus Jr. ripped a triple in the top of the 14th to knock in the game winning run - leading the Sky Sox to a 8-6 victory. The game lasted for over four and a half hours. The Sky Sox bullpen tried their hardest to blow this one. Andrew Barbosa gave up a pair of runs in the 7th, then David Goforth failed to protect a one run lead by giving up an HR in the 9th. But Andy Oliver, Stephen Kohlscheen and Michael Blazek would put up goose eggs for the next 4.1 innings. Kohlscheen would even add an RBI single in the 14th, giving the Sky Sox an insurance run. Colorado Springs starter Brandon Woodruff was solid (6.0 IP, 7 hits, 3 ER, 0BB, 6K), if unspectacular, on Tuesday. In addition to De Jesus Jr. (1-2, 3B, game winning RBI), the offensive leaders for the Sky Sox were Brett Phillips (3-4, 2 2B, 3 RBI), Ryan Cordell (3-6, BB), Garrett Cooper (2-6), Kyle Wren (2-3) and Lewis Brinson (1-5, 2 BB). In 30 at bats in 2016/17, Brandon Woodruff is hitting .300, including an HR. Colorado Springs Game Log Colorado Springs scored a pair of runs in the 14th to secure the team’s latest victory. The key hit was Ivan De Jesus Jr.’s triple, which scored the winning run. De Jesus Jr. would then score on a single by pitcher Stephen Kohlscheen. Col. Springs Top of the 14th Pitching Change: Steve Geltz replaces Madison Younginer IV, batting 2nd. Eric Sogard singles on a fly ball to center fielder Trayce Thompson. Ryan Cordell strikes out swinging. Garrett Cooper singles on a ground ball to right fielder Alex Verdugo. Eric Sogard out at 3rd on the throw, right fielder Alex Verdugo to third baseman Michael Ahmed. Ivan De Jesus Jr. triples (2) on a ground ball to right fielder Alex Verdugo. Garrett Cooper scores. Steve Geltz intentionally walks Yadiel Rivera. Stephen Kohlscheen singles on a ground ball to center fielder Trayce Thompson. Ivan De Jesus Jr. scores. Yadiel Rivera to 2nd. Tyler Heineman pops out to third baseman Michael Ahmed in foul territory.

Questions on a couple of AAA guys
Matt Breen replied to Madhawk23's topic in Brewers Minor League Talk
Yes, there's a reason why we keep bringing back Dillard and Burgos and so forth. These guys aren't prospects. They are filler - and they know it. In the case of Dillard and Burgos, I think the Brewers see more long term things for them in the future. Dillard in the media realm, while I wouldn't be surprised if Burgos became a pitching coach at some point. Now, they make a couple hundred grand at Colorado Springs - work with the younger guys, become mentors - and they fill a AAA slot that we don't want to push a young guy into yet (or at all). Does Dillard really make a couple hundred grand in Colorado? I know that when you have been in the Majors you make more but does that still count when you haven't been there in 4 years and have been released and a free agent? I honestly don't know. As a former major leaguer, he probably makes at least $100,000. But he can negotiate for more. Teams have been known to do that with veteran players who they want to keep in the system for whatever reason. A veteran player in the minors is entitled to at least 60% of his total pay from the previous year - so a guy in the majors for a full year, would get at least 300K if he was in the minors the next year. But a guy like Dillard - as you note - is so far removed from his ML days, that doesn't really apply anymore. Same with Burgos. So the 200K number is likely high - but you never know. I want to add that I've heard that the club really values Burgos' presence. -

Lopez is definitely not going to be put in Colorado Springs ever again why set someone up for failure? The only reason to send Lopez to AAA would be to have him work on his fastball location as his curveball is going to be absolutely useless in Colorado Springs. Jungmann is probably in the same boat as Lopez is but if Hader continues to struggle I wouldn't be surprised if Jungmann is moved back to Colorado Springs and Hader is moved back to AA. I'm not sure what this question is about. I totally agreed with you. I don't think anyone wants Lopez - or Jungmann - at Colorado Springs. That's exactly why guys like Burgos and Espino are there. -

I still expect them to run away with it. Their hitters and pitchers are underperforming. We are less than 1/6 of the way through the season. They will be better.

While I could see the club moving Monte, I also wouldn't be surprised if they just let him ride out the year - or most of it - in Wisconsin. Let him have some extended success. The stability might be a really good thing for him.

Just because they are 30 doesn't mean Espino and Guerra are similar. Guerra started as a catcher - so he's probably 5 or more years behind Espino in terms of development as a pitcher. That's why Guerra's emergence can be seen a real. He's not just a guy who had a nice stretch or whatever. He's actually learned how to be a pitcher. Espino is just a guy. Been around for more than a decade. He's always had good control. It's not shocking that he is doing well against a lot of younger guys. You can find a bunch of guys like this every year throughout the minors - pitchers as well as hitters. And he's got three games in Colorado Springs - so I'm not going to get too excited. Wait until the summer comes around and it gets hot and dry in Colorado. I certainly wouldn't dismiss Espino - but I wouldn't get excited about him either. As I said, he's just a guy. If he plays well, he might find a chance to play in the big leagues. That would be great for him. -
Link Report for Monday 5/1 - Sky Sox Matinee
Matt Breen replied to Jim Goulart's topic in Brewers Minor League Talk
Sky Sox Fall Late In Finale, 3-2 Iowa uses seventh-inning rally to take rain-shortened series. By Robby Veronesi / Colorado Springs Sky Sox Nate Orf's RBI double gave the Sox a lead in the sixth inning Monday afternoon in Des Moines. (Photo: Paat Kelly) Colorado Springs Box Score The Sky Sox had their chances on Monday, but they couldn’t capitalize when the opportunity arose - leading to a 3-2 lose to the Iowa Cubs. Sky Sox batters would go 1-11 with runners in scoring position - and leave 10 men on base. Thus, they only managed a pair of runs despite getting nine hits and walking five times. Nate Orf (2-2, 2 BB, 2B) and Brett Phillips (1-3, 2B, BB) were top bats for the afternoon. On the mound, the Sky Sox got a good outing from Paolo Espino (6.0 IP, 4 hits, 1 ER, 0 BB, 6K), but the pitchers were undone by three errors in the 7th, which helped contribute to a pair of Cubs’ runs. Brent Suter took the lose, giving up a pair of runs on two hits and a walk in just a third of an inning. After a slow start, Nate Orf has upped his batting average to .244. Andrew Susac, however, has struggled - his average falling to .100 for the year. Colorado Springs Game Log The 7th inning was the downfall for the Sky Sox. A wild pitch, three errors and a couple of infield singles lead to a pair of Cubs runs. Iowa Bottom of the 7th Pitching Change: Brent Suter replaces Paolo Espino, batting 9th, replacing Kyle Wren. Jeimer Candelario flies out to center fielder Lewis Brinson. Victor Caratini singles on a soft ground ball to shortstop Yadiel Rivera. With Mark Zagunis batting, wild pitch by Brent Suter, Victor Caratini scores. Throwing error by center fielder Lewis Brinson. Throwing error by catcher Andrew Susac. Mark Zagunis walks. Taylor Davis singles on a soft ground ball to third baseman Ivan De Jesus Jr. Mark Zagunis advances to 3rd, on a throwing error by third baseman Ivan De Jesus Jr. Pitching Change: Tim Dillard replaces Brent Suter, batting 9th. Todd Glaesmann strikes out swinging. Offensive Substitution: Pinch-hitter Stephen Bruno replaces David Rollins. Stephen Bruno doubles (1) on a fly ball to center fielder Lewis Brinson. Bijan Rademacher out at 2nd. -
2017 International Signing Thread
Matt Breen replied to And That's topic in MLB Draft & International Signings
The International stuff has been a joke for a long time. This year will finally put teams on an even playing field. That said, MLB has always simply judged guys like Robert on a case-by-case basis, and once they were ready with him, they had to make him available. It sucks (at least for teams like Milwaukee), but that's life. As you said, it's a huge win for Robert - he'll get $20M+ more than he would have gotten had he been forced to wait a couple of months. I'm just happy knowing that going forward there will be no more of this kind of thing. -
I believe Marinez is out of options, so we would have to expose him to other teams. Not sure what the club thinks of Marinez long-term - but there would be a good chance we'd lose him. Scahill would require someone getting taken off the 40 man roster. Again, chance you lose someone if that happens.
