  1. The Sky Sox game was canceled this evening after heavy thunderstorms came through the area.
  2. Yep. Slow grounder. Got on it quick, bare handed. Nice job.
  3. Johnny Estrada. That was a bad nightmare. Dude ate himself out of the league.
  4. I knew we struck out a lot, but most EVER? Yikes.... Chris Carter was a key part of the 2013 Astros team. 212 strikeouts for him that year. Villar was on that team as well. But just a part timer. Still, lots of Ks.
  5. Has anyone noticed the season Zach Britton is having? 0.54 ERA, .082 WHIP, 37 saves, Zero blown saves, 59 K in 50 IP. And it's not just this season. He had sub .200 ERAs in 2014 and 2015 (plus 36 and 37 saves, respectively). He's produced 2.5, 2.5 and 3.1 bWAR over the last three years. Pretty impressive for a reliever. But you don't hear much about the guy. http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/b/brittza01.shtml
  6. Early Runs Pace Sky Sox Over El Paso 13-5 Heart of Sky Sox order combines for 11 RBI in home victory. By Aaron Cheris / Colorado Springs Sky Sox Colorado Springs Boxscore The big bats came out to play tonight with the Sky Sox pounding out 14 hits and 13 runs in a win over the El Paso Chihuahuas. Rehabbing OF Domingo Santana certainly looks ready to return to the big leagues. He was 3-3 with a pair of walks while driving in five. He’s 5-9 with five walks in his short AAA stint. Also bringing out the lumber were Kyle Wren, Nate Orf and Garrett Cooper, who each had two hits. Cooper homered and drove in four runs. Garin Cecchini also homered. Tim Dillard picked up the win - his seventh - with three scoreless innings of relief work. Colorado Springs Game Log The Chihuahuas came out and scored four runs in the top of the 1st, but the Sky Sox answered with five in the bottom of the frame, then four more in the 2nd. Col. Springs Bottom of the 1st Kyle Wren walks. Nate Orf grounds into a force out, shortstop Luis Sardinas to second baseman Carlos Asuaje. Kyle Wren out at 2nd. Nate Orf to 1st. With Domingo Santana batting, wild pitch by Bryan Rodriguez, Nate Orf scores. Throwing error by catcher Hector Sanchez. Domingo Santana singles on a ground ball to center fielder Hunter Renfroe. With Garin Cecchini batting, passed ball by Hector Sanchez, Domingo Santana to 2nd. Garin Cecchini walks. Garrett Cooper homers (3) on a fly ball to right center field. Domingo Santana scores. Garin Cecchini scores. Josmil Pinto triples (3) on a line drive to right fielder Nick Torres. With Eric Young Jr. batting, passed ball by Hector Sanchez, Josmil Pinto scores. Eric Young Jr. strikes out swinging. Yadiel Rivera grounds out, third baseman Jose Rondon to first baseman Diego Goris. Col. Springs Bottom of the 2nd Drew Gagnon flies out to right fielder Nick Torres. Kyle Wren singles on a ground ball to right fielder Nick Torres. With Nate Orf batting, Kyle Wren steals (17) 2nd base. Garin Cecchini homers (5) on a fly ball to right field. Domingo Santana scores. Garrett Cooper flies out to right fielder Nick Torres. Josmil Pinto grounds out, first baseman Diego Goris to pitcher Bryan Rodriguez.
  7. I'd like to point out that Suter is having a nice season. He had a 7.45 ERA in April, then has been very solid in a difficult pitching environment (ERA down to 3.50 on the season). He's a hittable pitcher, but he really limits walks. He's the kind of player that would really benefit from a good defense.
  8. Sky Sox Topped By El Paso 5-3 Wilkerson strikes out 10 as Sky Sox fall. By Aaron Cheris / Colorado Springs Sky Sox Colorado Springs Boxscore Despite 10 hits, the Sky Sox could only manage three runs tonight in a lose to the El Paso Chihuahuas. The Sky Sox didn’t help their cause grounding into two double plays, committing two errors, getting caught stealing a base, and going only 2 for 10 with runners in scoring position. Aaron Wilkerson had a nice rebound game on the mound, giving up three runs while striking out 10 in six innings. Offensively, Garrett Cooper homered and walked twice, while Nate Orf and Michael McKenry each had a pair of hits. Colorado Springs Game Log Former Brewer Luis Sardines doubled in the 7th and scored to give the Chihuahuas the lead.
  9. Sky Sox Soar Past El Paso 11-3 Wang earns first win of season behind 17 hits from offense. By Aaron Cheris / Colorado Springs Sky Sox Colorado Springs Boxscore It’s nice to have a game like this every now and then: 11 runs on 17 hits, five walks, three El Paso errors, and even a HBP. Garin Cecchini and Josmil Pinto each had three hits to pace the Sky Sox. Wei-Chung Wang continues a nice run of success surrendering three runs on eight hits over 6 2/3 innings. Wang struck out five and walked none. Domingo Santana has been bumped up the AAA on his rehabilitation tour. He was 1-3 with two walks (as well as two strikeouts). Reliever Austin Ross got the first hit of hist professional career - and a double to top it off. He is now 1 for 14 lifetime. Colorado Springs Game Log The Sky Sox broke open the game with a big 2nd inning: Col. Springs Bottom of the 2nd Garrett Cooper singles on a line drive to center fielder Manuel Margot. Josmil Pinto doubles (17) on a fly ball to right fielder Hunter Renfroe. Garrett Cooper to 3rd. Michael McKenry walks. Yadiel Rivera singles on a ground ball to right fielder Hunter Renfroe. Garrett Cooper scores. Josmil Pinto scores. Michael McKenry to 3rd. Wei-Chung Wang out on a sacrifice bunt, pitcher Michael Kelly to first baseman Patrick Kivlehan. Yadiel Rivera to 2nd. Kyle Wren out on a sacrifice fly to left fielder Nick Torres. Michael McKenry scores. Yadiel Rivera advances to 2nd, on a throwing error by third baseman Casey McElroy. Nate Orf singles on a ground ball to center fielder Manuel Margot. Yadiel Rivera scores. Nate Orf out at 2nd on the throw, center fielder Manuel Margot to pitcher Michael Kelly to shortstop Luis Sardinas.
  10. Sky Sox Blast Past Isotopes 8-2 In Finale Burgos earns win behind homers from Pinto and McKenry. By Aaron Cheris / Colorado Springs Sky Sox Colorado Springs Boxscore Welcome to Colorado Springs, Michael McHenry. Boom! Home run and a pair of walks. Well done. Garrett Cooper had three hits while Josmil Pinto and Kyle Wren added a pair. With his three-hit night, Cooper has raised his batting average to .273 since he was called up to AAA. Wren is hitting .348, and would be 2nd in the league in hitting if he had enough plate appearances. Lewis Brinson hit the DL after injuring his hamstring yesterday. He’s had a history of hamstring issues in his career. Catcher Andrew Susac, acquired in the Will Smith deal from the Giants, also landed on the DL (although we don’t know the nature of his injury). Susac was on the DL earlier this year with a shoulder issue. Colorado Springs Game Log The big hammer for the Sky Sox was a four-run 8th inning, which included McKenry’s HR. Col. Springs Bottom of the 8th Pitching Change: Chad Qualls replaces Sam Moll, batting 9th. Kyle Wren grounds out, shortstop Joey Wong to first baseman Jordan Patterson. Nate Orf walks. Garin Cecchini doubles (20) on a line drive to right fielder Raimel Tapia. Nate Orf scores. Garrett Cooper singles on a ground ball to left fielder Stephen Cardullo. Garin Cecchini to 3rd. Josmil Pinto called out on strikes. Pitching Change: Nelson Gonzalez replaces Chad Qualls, batting 9th. Michael McKenry homers (6) on a fly ball to left center field. Garin Cecchini scores. Garrett Cooper scores. Eric Young Jr. walks. Yadiel Rivera strikes out swinging. Wild pitch by pitcher Nelson Gonzalez. Eric Young Jr. to 3rd. Yadiel Rivera to 1st. Offensive Substitution: Pinch-hitter Parker Berberet replaces Michael Kirkman. Parker Berberet flies out to left fielder Stephen Cardullo.
  11. Susac went on the DL today. He had a shoulder injury earlier in the year, but I haven't heard why he was shelved this time. McKenry went yard in his first game with the Sky Sox.
  12. Just for fun, here's an early Top 50 listing for next 2017 from minorleagueball.com http://www.minorleagueball.com/2016/8/14/12477008/2017-mlb-draft-prospect-an-early-top-50
  13. Really good story - like you said, the Matt Garza stuff was great.
  14. Yes. He's been the manager for a year and a half. His winning % is pretty much the same as last year (.448 vs .445), and he's lost a lot of good players. I guess I don't see this. We are 14-15 since the all-star break. That doesn't seem like nose diving. And when I watch games I don't see players dogging it. I see some foolish plays at times (Villar), but it doesn't at all look like people are mailing it in. I would like to see Broxton more, but I think the club is keeping him mostly to face lefties at this time. Maybe it's a strategy to build some success, then ultimately expose him to more right handers. Just a thought. As for the starting pitchers, we've sent two guys to the minors already. So the guys we are running out there are Garza and Anderson. But the team can let that happen for a while. If Anderson or Wily or Garza or whomever can get their game together, they can perhaps be a valuable player or trade chip. It's not like we are missing the playoffs because of them. I think we need a person that relates to players well, puts them in good situations and helps them develop. I think the worst thing we can have is a guy who creates a toxic situation. I'm thrilled we don't have a manager obsessed with small ball (bunt and bunt and more bunts). Counsel's job is to shepherd the team during a rebuild. It's his job to help the players grow into their potential. It's a fine line, but I think you need a smart and creative guy to do that. He seems like he makes decisions based on sound research and judgement - that's a great plus. I think the club knew exactly what they were doing when Counsel became manager. They knew it would be a several year project. I'm betting Mark A. said to Counsel that he had his back and he would let him grow with the young talent. I don't think there's been any reason to make a move after the season. Ownership and management will ride out the rebuild rough phase at least another year or two before they make any dramatic moves.
  15. Sky Sox Comeback Falls Short In 3-1 Loss Hader pitches well but Sky Sox bats quieted by Isotopes. By Aaron Cheris / Colorado Springs Sky Sox Colorado Springs Boxscore The Sky Sox dropped a stink bomb today. They managed a single hit against Albuquerque through the first eight innings until adding three more in the 9th inning. The team struck out 12 times. Josh Hader turned in a solid performance, allowing three runs in six innings. He struck out six while walking only one batter. Nate Orf had two of the team's four hits. Colorado Springs Game Log The Sky Sox made things interesting in the 9th, getting three hits and scoring a run. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough. Col. Springs Bottom of the 9th Pitching Change: Brian Schlitter replaces Shane Carle, batting 9th, replacing Brandon Barnes. Yadiel Rivera singles on a ground ball to right fielder Raimel Tapia. Offensive Substitution: Pinch-hitter Parker Berberet replaces Damien Magnifico. Parker Berberet singles on a line drive to left fielder Stephen Cardullo. Yadiel Rivera to 3rd. Kyle Wren bunt pops out to first baseman Jordan Patterson in foul territory. Nate Orf singles on a line drive to right fielder Raimel Tapia. Yadiel Rivera scores. Parker Berberet to 2nd. With Eric Young Jr. batting, wild pitch by Brian Schlitter, Parker Berberet to 3rd. Nate Orf to 2nd. Eric Young Jr. called out on strikes. Garrett Cooper grounds out, shortstop Pat Valaika to first baseman Jordan Patterson.
  16. Sky Sox Fall To Isotopes 7-4 In Opener Reed's four hits not enough as Sky Sox drop first game. By Aaron Cheris / Colorado Springs Sky Sox Colorado Springs Boxscore Despite 15 hits, the Sky Sox couldn't score much this evening, getting only four runs in their lose to Albuquerque. Aaron Wilkerson was unimpressive surrendering eight hits and three walks in just three innings of work. Welcome to Colorado Springs! Michael Reed continues to hit the ball well, going 4-4 including a double and an RBI. Reed has boosted his batting average to .256 for the year. Kyle Wren and Lewis Brinson each had three hits for the Sky Sox, while Brandon Macias and Garin Cecchini each added a pair. Andrew Susac is just 2 for 30 since joining the Sky Sox in the trade for Will Smith. Colorado Springs Game Log Colorado Spring had a chance to get back into the game in the 7th inning, but Nate Orf grounded into a double play with bases loaded. The Sky Sox had to settle for one run despite four hits in the inning. Col. Springs Bottom of the 7th Pitching Change: Shane Carle replaces Harrison Musgrave, batting 9th, replacing Brandon Barnes. Michael Reed singles on a ground ball to center fielder Mike Tauchman. Garin Cecchini singles on a ground ball to right fielder Raimel Tapia. Michael Reed to 2nd. Yadiel Rivera flies out to right fielder Raimel Tapia. Offensive Substitution: Pinch-hitter Brandon Macias replaces Michael Kirkman. Brandon Macias singles on a fly ball to center fielder Mike Tuchman. Michael Reed scores. Garin Cecchini to 2nd. Kyle Wren singles on a ground ball to left fielder Stephen Cardullo. Garin Cecchini to 3rd. Brandon Macias to 2nd. Nate Orf grounds into a double play, shortstop Rafael Ynoa to second baseman Joey Wong to first baseman Jordan Patterson. Kyle Wren out at 2nd.
  17. Exactly, WHY? I think you'll see Broxton primarily against lefties.
