Huntsville Game Summary from SportsTicker: CHATTANOOGA, Tennessee (Ticker) -- Corey Hart and Brandon Gemoll each finished with three hits and combined for five RBI as the Huntsville Stars edged the Chattanooga Lookouts, 9-7. Hart struck an RBI double in the first inning, hit a second run-scoring double in the fifth, and doubled in a third run in the ninth to snap a 7-7 tie. Gemoll also hit an RBI two-bagger in the first frame and added a run-scoring hit in the ninth to cap the three-run rally. Andy Machado (is Alejandro called Andy?) knocked in a run in the fifth inning and J.J. Hardy produced a game-tying, run-scoring groundout in the ninth for Huntsville, which has won two in a row after dropping five straight. Jeff Hundley (2-1) allowed one hit over three scoreless innings to pick up the win and Brian Adams followed with a scoreless ninth to pick up his third save. Wilmy Caceres and Evan Conley each hit a two-run double and Alejandro Diaz chipped in with three hits, including a run-scoring double for Chattanooga. Kris Keller (2-1) surrendered three runs and three hits in 1/3 of an inning to suffer the loss for the Lookouts, who have lost five of their last six games against Huntsville. High Desert Site Game Summary: ADELANTO, CA ? The High Desert Mavericks spoiled Lake Elsinore?s last chance for a second half South Division title, beating the Storm by a final score of 11-5 on Sunday evening at Mavericks Stadium. The loss by the already playoff-bound Storm gives the Inland Empire 66ers the second half South Division crown. The Mavs offense exploded for 11 runs and 14 hits, with four different players logging multi-hit games. Johnny Raburn and Froilan Villanueva each had three hits and helped Mavs starter Hubie Pruett win his first start in a Mavs uniform. Pruett (1-0), who was just called up from the Arizona League, worked five innings, while allowing four runs on eight hits. The right-hander left with a 7-4 lead and watched the Mavs bullpen shutdown a Storm offense that scored 14 runs the night before. Tony Stavros, Justin Backsmeyer and Bobby Bystrowski combined to limit the Storm to one run on three hits in the final four innings. Jeremy Frost?s solo shot in the second gave the Mavs a 1-0 lead. After Ben Johnson connected for a two-run shot against Pruett in the third, High Desert picked up four runs in the bottom of the frame against Storm starter Gabe Ribas (4-5). Brian Foster capped the inning with a two-run blast to right-center field, his team-leading 17th of the year. Joel Alvarado and Raburn had back-to-back doubles to open the game up in the fourth, as the Mavs took a 7-2 lead. After the Storm picked up two in fifth, the Mavs put the game away in the sixth with three more runs. Raburn picked up another RBI with a triple, and two batters later, Villanueva had an RBI double. Both teams exchanged a run in the eighth to round out the scoring. The Storm?s came on Greg Sain?s 19th home run of the year. The Mavs got their run as Foster?s fielder?s choice plated Ralph Santana. The Mavs and Storm meet for the final time this year in the final game of the season for the High Desert Mavericks. Tommy Marx (0-4) throws for the Mavs, while Chris Tierney (0-0) makes his Storm debut on Monday night at 7:05. One guaranteed fan will drive home in a brand new Toyota Echo on Monday night thanks to Valley-Hi Toyota Honda. -

Toledo (Tigers) 3, Indianapolis 2 Indy Site Game Summary: TOLEDO, OH -- The Toledo Mud Hens held off the visiting Indianapolis Indians for a 3-2 victory in the second to last game of the 2003 season on Sunday evening. Despite out-hitting the Mud Hens by a 14-6 margin, the Indians stranded ten runners on base, including eight over the final four innings. With the win, Toledo moves one half game ahead of the Indians and into third place in the IL West with only one game remaining. After both teams scored a single run in the first inning, the Indians took a 2-1 lead in the top of the sixth when Ryan Knox scored from third base on a wild pitch thrown by Toledo starter John Ennis. Knox had reached on an infield single to open the inning, stole second base, and then advanced to third on a sacrifice by Richard Paz. Ennis (3-11) pitched 6.2 innings to pick up the win for the Mud Hens. Toledo struck back with two in the bottom of the sixth when third baseman Brant Ust doubled home Cody Ross and AJ Hinch. Ust's double came off Indians relief pitcher Derrin Ebert (0-2), who came on in relief of Robert Marquez. Marquez made a spot start for the Tribe going 4.1 innings allowing four hits and one run. The Tribe scored first when Knox doubled to leadoff the game. He was then sacrificed to third by Richard Paz, and scored on Pete Zoccolillo's sacrifice fly as the Tribe took an early 1-0 lead. Eugene Kingsale scored Toledo's first run when he tripled to open the bottom of the first and scored on Ernie Young's RBI single. The Indians had plenty of opportunities at the plate in the later stages of the game, as they loaded the bases in both the eighth and ninth innings while getting no runs to show for it. Reliever Matt Anderson allowed a single to Doug Jennings with one out in the eighth inning that loaded the bases, but Anderson pitched out of the jam by getting Wilton Veras to pop out and Cody McKay to ground out to second base. The Indians again loaded the bases in the ninth inning against Anderson when Steve Scarborough, Knox, and Paz all singled. Jason Jimenez was then brought into the game to face Zoccolillo with one out. Jimenez got Zoccolillo to line out to Ernie Young at first base for the second out of the inning, and on the play Young turned and fired a strike to Hens shortstop Omar Infante to catch Knox off of second base for the final out of the game as Jimenez picked up his second save of the season. Indianapolis pitcher Derek Lee was forced into action as the Tribe's designated hitter in Sunday's game when Alex Delgado and Jim Rushford were both unable to play due to injuries. Lee was 1-for-4 at the plate with a two-out triple in the seventh inning, but was stranded at third when Anderson struck out Knox to end the inning. The Indians (64-78) and Mud Hens (65-78) will conclude the 2003 season with a 1 p.m. game at Toledo's Fifth Third Field when the Tribe's Nate Teut (3-5, 4.41) will matchup with Pat Ahearne (4-5, 3.36). The winner of the Labor Day contest will claim third place in the International League Western Division. Indianapolis Box Score: Ryan Knox's four-hit day wasted; no word on why Luis Martinez was held back, nor the extent of Alex Delgado's or Jim Rushford's injuries... Huntsville's site is down, so we turn to David Weiser for game details... David Weiser's www.starsboxscore.com Huntsville Update: SO LONG TO THE MONKEYThis looked more like the team that won the 1st half championship....... "The first inning was the key," said manager Frank Kremblas. "That's more two-out hits then we've had in a long time." Ballplayers are a superstitious lot........ The scene in which Cerrano's "bats needing hats" in the movie, "Major League" isn't far from the truth. Minnie Minoso once showered with his clothes on during a slump "to remove the evil spirits." (It worked and the next day, eight of his teammates did the same.)........ Some won't cross the chalkline after the third out and I'm sure some players on the Huntsville Stars have some superstitions........ In desperation, they tried one tonight. The entire lineup swung the same stick, a 33-inch model with a medium barrel, to score as many runs in the first inning as they had in their last five games........ They used it until pitcher Greg Bruso broke it in the top of the 5th inning....... Eleven men came to the plate in the 1st off Josh Hall, and no less than six two-out hits keyed the outburst, putting to rest another evil spell. The rally started with Noochie Varner's one-out infield single off the pitcher, Josh Hall. One out later, Corey Hart singled him to second....... Then the two-out monkey jumped ship........ Brandon Gemoll singled a 2-1 pitch to right to drive in a run. For the first time in six games, the Stars had the lead in a game........ Brad Nelson, 2-for his last-16, then ripped an RBI single into center field. Daryl Clark, with runners on first and second, singled to the right side as Gemoll scored. Then Kade Johnson, with runners on first and second, launched a two-run double off the wall in left-center. That made it 5-0, tying the largest 1st inning the Stars had this season....... Bruso then stroked his first hit in professional ball and even Alejandro Machado, who is still fighting off a 3-for-34 monkey, had his pop-up dropped by Jeff Bannon in shallow left field, scoring Johnson for the final run of the inning........ The six-run 1st was the Stars' largest opening frame of the season........ Josh Hall's troubles against the Stars this season continued to the bitter end. The Reds' # 9 prospect in their organization finishes 0-3 against the Stars in six appearances with a 6.48 ERA. Bruso had his first RBI in the 3rd inning to make it 7-0....... Hart hit a rocket into right-center, a stand-up double in the 6th inning to drive in J.J. Hardy for the Stars' final run....... The Lookouts scored late, but too little, and were no threat. The Stars' outstanding defense turned three double plays to help keep the Lookouts from getting serious......... The Lookouts come back on Sunday evening with Ryan Mottl (6-5, 3.80). Pedro Liriano will try to become the Stars' 2nd 10-game winner of the season and avoid his 14th loss, the most since Curtis Shaw lost 16 in 1993........ Chris Saenz arrived to join the Stars Saturday afternoon, and is scheduled to start the final game of the regular season for the Stars on Monday, an afternoon start. Pick up a copy of the latest issue of Baseball America, Stars fans...... You'll find a shot of Joe Davis Stadium in the background and J.J. Hardy, Mike Jones, and Brad Nelson on the cover........ On the inside, in the Double-A report, is a feature article on Hardy........ The truth comes out on Dave Krynzel's knee. He didn't injure it in the final game of the Birmingham series. It was actually in the batting cage before that game, when he felt something in the back of his knee. No word yet if he'll be available for the playoffs. Krynzel says its just some tightness........ The Stars are now back at .500. The last time the Stars were under .500, was on April 14th, when they were 5-6........ The Stars are now 12-17 in August. Their worst August in their history was in 1999, when they went 13-23 (that includes September)........ Derek Lee is holding International League hitters to a .245 average. Saturday, he had another fine game, throwing seven innings and giving up just four hits to Columbus and getting out of a bases-loaded jam in the 7th inning, allowing just one run. The Indians won in 12 innings, 3-2....... Richard Paz had three hits, raising his batting average since he joined Indy to .344. Pete Zoccolillo and Keith Luuloa, a pair of last year's Stars, also had three hits......... The Reds promoted a pair of players from the Gulf Coast League to Chattanooga before this series began. One of them, center fielder Kenny Lewis can really fly and I expect to hear more of him in years to come......... Jeff Deardorff, who hit .254 and led the Stars with 19 HRs and 61 RBIs last year, is hitting .314 for the Twins' AA affiliate, the New Britain Rock Cats, 9th best in the Eastern League right now. He's also 4th among EL slugging leaders. -

Despite Mike DeJean's multiple blown saves and the putrid work of Luis Vizcaino, the Crew is 21-16 in one-run games as well. Can't read too much into that, of course, but it reflects positively on Ned Yost in some fashion, just not exactly sure how -- I just don't remember us second-guessing him on too many late-inning moves, which I imagine means that bench coach Rich Dauer's head is in the game as well... -

Beloit Game Summary from the Dayton Site: Dayton, OH - It took the Dayton Dragons (25-42, 60-77) six tries, but they finally knocked off the Beloit Snappers (42-25, 75-59) 8-0, Saturday night at Fifth Third Field. With the win the Dragons are 1-5 this season against Beloit. Hector Mateo sparked the Dragons in the first inning with a leadoff single. He then stole second base and scored on a RBI single from Kevin Howard. Dayton took the 1-0 lead, and that would be more than enough run support for Dragon starting pitcher Thomas Pauly (W, 2-5). Pauly picked up the win allowing just two hits in 5.0 innings. He didn?t walk any and struck out five. Dayton scored three more times in the second inning to take a 4-0 lead. Many Paula reached on a fielder?s choice in front of Mateo. Jarrod Schmidt then walked to load the bases. Paula scored on a wild pitch by Jason Baker (L, 5-4). Howard then delivered again with another single scoring Mateo and Schmidt to put Dayton in front 4-0. Baker lasted just 4.0 innings allowing eight runs on ten hits. He walked one and struck out five taking the loss. The finishing touch came in the fourth inning when the Dragons scored four more runs to cap the scoring giving Dayton the 8-0 lead, and the win. Tiago Campos singled leading off the fourth inning. He moved up to second on a groundout. Schmidt drove home Campos with a single. Howard followed with his third single of the game. Ryan Fry then blasted a three run homerun scoring both Schmidt and Howard. Kyle Edens (S, 1) finished off the Snappers picking up his first save of the season. Edens went the final 4.0 innings allowing no runs on three hits. He struck out one and walked one in the contest. The Dragons will continue the four game series against the Snappers Sunday with the first pitch scheduled for 2:00 PM. 1410 ESPN Radio WING AM will carry the game live with the pre game show beginning at 1:30 pm. RHP Kyle Lucas will make the start for Dayton while Beloit will start RHP Calvin Carpenter. -
