Arizona Box Score: 10-inning victory; nice clean win based on fine pitching throughout; fittingly, SS Gilberto Acosta drives in both Brewer runs -- he'd have to be considered team MVP; among Acosta's fine overall numbers (.865 OPS coming into today's finale), he also stole 30 bases in 33 attempts, easily leading the league -- he'll be 21 years old in October; Helena SS Augustin Septimo won't be 20 until next May and has struggled some, so Acosta could be Beloit's starting SS in 2004... Indy Site Game Summary: INDIANAPOLIS -- Cody McKay drew a four-pitch, bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the 12th inning Saturday night as the Indianapolis Indians defeated the Clippers 3-2 at Victory Field in front of the fourth-largest crowd in the ballpark's history, 16,068. The ballgame was the final contest of the season for the Tribe at Victory Field, and ended Columbus' chances for a division title. It was the second time this season that the Indians defeated the Columbus Clippers by drawing a walk-off walk against Adkins to force the winning run home. On July 22nd, Pete Zoccolillo looked at ball four to allow Jim Rushford to score from second base in the bottom of the ninth inning at Victory Field. Saturday, Zoccolillo led off the bottom of the 12th with a double to left. Keith Luuloa was then intentionally walked by Adkins before Doug Jennings flew out to center. Wilton Veras then drew a walk to load the bases for McKay, who walked on four pitches as Adkins dropped to 3-3 on the year. With the score tied at 1-1, Matt Childers came on as the third Indians pitcher of the evening in the top of the 10th inning, giving up a one-out solo home run to John Rodriguez as the Clippers took a 2-1 lead. The run was the first earned run of Childers' Triple-A career, as the righthander had pitched 16.1 innings this season and 5.0 last season without allowing an earned run. The Indians stormed back to tie the game in the bottom of the 10th when Luuloa singled to center with two outs and came around to score one batter later on Jennings' RBI double to right. Jennings' blast hit the top of the wall in right, narrowly missing leaving the yard for a game-winning homer. Childers blanked the Clippers in the 11th and 12th innings to pick up the win and improve to 3-0 on the season. Luuloa singled home Rich Paz in the bottom of the fifth inning for the first run of the game, putting the Tribe ahead 1-0. Luuloa, was 3-for-3 in the game with a run scored, an RBI, and three walks. Columbus notched a run in the top of the seventh inning when Tribe starter Derek Lee threw a wild pitch with the bases loaded and no outs in the inning to allow Bobby Smith to score from third. Lee then struck out Drew Henson and Michel Hernandez before getting Rodriguez to ground out weakly to first base to get out of the jam. Lee pitched 7.0 innings allowing four hits and the one run while striking out four. The Indians travel to Toledo on Sunday and Monday for the final two games of the season. Luis Martinez (4-0, 0.99) will bring his electric stuff to the mound on Sunday to face Toledo's John Ennis (5-11, 5.68). -

Indianapolis 3, Columbus (Yankees) 2, 12 innings Tribe wins home finale on a Cody McKay walk-off walk... Indianapolis Box Score: Shane Nance really needs to transfer all this AAA domination to his Milwaukee uniform; thanks for the memories, Derek Lee! David Weiser's www.starsboxscore.com Huntsville Update: COREY HART - MVPForgetting the present, Southern League managers, radio broadcasters, and media reporters, have remembered the past....... Frank Kremblas was voted the Southern League Manager-of-the-Year and Corey [/b] beat a strong field of candidates to win the Southern League MVP award for 2003....... Corey becomes the 4th Huntsville Star in club history to win the award and Kremblas, the 3rd manager following Jeff Newman in 1989 and Gary Jones in 1994......... Another former Star, Webster Garrison (Stars 1991, '92, '96, '98) won the Midwest League honor of Manager-of-the-Year. But the change of scenery isn't helping the Stars, caught in a whirlpool of defeat........ Despite a record of 9-2 this season at Bell South Park, the Stars lost their 5th straight game and 9th of their last 10, against a pitcher who came in with an 8.10 ERA....... Instead of picking him apart, Daylan Childress scattered four hits and struck out eight en route to eight innings of shutout ball......... On the other hand, the Stars are facing a team that's hot. The Lookouts have now won 8 of their last 9....... The worst part is that this team that was for the major part of the second half, on the bottom of the standings, has now tied the Stars for 2nd place, and no doubt, would like to win some kind of victory in finishing 2nd all by themselves. The Lookouts scored in the 1st on an RBI hit by Dionys Cesar, a former Huntsville Star, who did well for us in 2001, hitting .282 after joining the Stars in early May. Eventually, he was promoted to Indianapolis on July 15 after 60 games....... Cesar's single through the right side, scored Wilmy Caceres --- his 7th RBI in just nine games with Chattanooga........ Corey Hart's 9th error of the month (more than he made in June and July, combined, and more than either April or May), set up the Lookouts' 2nd run in the 6th inning....... It was on a misplayed ball off the bat of Edwin Encarnacion, a 2003 Futures All-Star, on a 2-0 pitch........ Dionys Cesar moved him to second with a single up the middle........ Jesse Gutierrez then hit a two-out line drive single to left, scoring Gutierrez who slid under the tag on a good throw from Brad Nelson........ Chris Barnwell had a ball kick off his glove in the 3rd inning, but the Lookouts never capitalized on the miscue. Barny, when playing second, will sometimes sit back on a ground ball, something he doesn't do when playing short or third, and he gets a bad hop that way. The Stars had some sterling defense from Brandon Gemoll who made two difficult scoops during the game which held the Lookouts with runners on base....... Two runners reached scoring position in the Lookouts' 6th on doubles by Alejandro Diaz and Brian Anderson, but Diaz was picked off by Ben Hendrickson, his 2nd pickoff of the night......... J.J. Hardy also, as usual, was making some shining plays at short, showing why he belongs on the league All-Star team, and why he'll be a major league star someday......... There was little offensive threat, however. The Stars didn't get their first hit until the 5th inning when Noochie Varner singled and took second on an fielding error by Alejandro Diaz, but nothing came of it. Mike Kremblas and Daryl Clark both struck out. Clark's bat on his second swing landed in the seats on the 14th row on the 1st base side, but everyone was all right........ Barnwell walked in the 1st, but was erased on a stolen base attempt. It was only the 3rd time this season that Barny has led off in the batting order this year........ The Stars had their best opportunity in the 6th, as Childress faced his toughest jam........ Hendrickson led off with a hit up the middle. Then with one out, Nelson doubled down the left field line, sending Ben to third, but Childress fanned Hardy with a high fastball and retired Hart on a foul pop to first. Mike Jones was officially placed on the disabled list, Friday, so the Stars could place pitcher Chris Saenz on the roster.......... Greg Bruso will make his 2nd appearance for the Stars, Saturday night against Josh Hall (8-9, 3.26), who earlier this season made a start for the Reds against the Giants and gave up a home run to Barry Bonds. -

Quite a bit of news in the Indianapolis Media Notes for Saturday: TONIGHT: The Indians meet Columbus in the final home game of the 2003 season. With a win tonight, the Indians will finish the season with a winning record on their last three homestands. The Tribe will finish the season with a sub .500 mark at home overall though. The Indians have a 297-232 (.561) regular-season record at Victory Field since moving in on July 11, 1996. Last year was the first time the Tribe did not finish above .500 at home (34-38). The Indians are just 5-10 against the Clippers, and have dropped the last five meetings between the two clubs. The Tribe has managed to go 3-4 against them at Victory Field. This will be the first time the Indians have lost the season series to Columbus since 1999. Fernando Seguignol is hitting .429-8-21 in 15 games against the Tribe. On Aug. 18, the Indians began a stretch of 16 straight games against IL West rivals to close out the year. The Tribe is 8-5 in this stretch, and 19-26 against division foes overall this season. THE "HOME" STRETCH: The final month of the season is truly the "home" stretch for the Indians. From July 29 through Aug. 30, the Tribe plays 22 home games in 33 days. The Indians are 17-16 in that stretch, including a 12-9 mark at Victory Field. YESTERDAY: Columbus held on to defeat the Indians 5-4. Curtis Pride had a three-run homer for the Clippers. Pete Zoccolillo led the Tribe with four hits and three RBI. He belted his 12th home run of the season. Doug Jennings added three hits and a home run. ON THE MOUND: Lefthander Derek Lee makes his eighth start and 14th appearance. Lee is 2-3 with a 3.14 ERA as a starter. He is 1-2 with a 2.73 ERA in six games (three starts) in August striking out 25 in 26.1 innings while walking just six. Lee is coming off a win in his last start on Aug. 25 against Louisville. He held the Bats to two runs in 7.2 innings. Lee has worked 7.2 and 8.0 innings in his last two starts. He has not faced Columbus this season. MOST VALUABLE PLAYER: Pete Zoccolillo has been named the Indians Most Valuable Player, and will receive a championship-style diamond ring prior to tonight's game. He leads the team with 130 games, 120 hits, 34 doubles, 72 RBI and 51 walks while hitting .277. See the separate press release for more details. PLAYER OF THE MONTH: Jason Childers has been named the Indians Player of the Month for August after going 3-0 with four saves and a 0.00 ERA. He has a win or save in half of the Tribe's 14 victories this month, and has allowed just five hits in 11.2 innings. He will receive a commemorative watch before tonight's game. AWARDS NIGHT: The Indians will honor five other players tonight as well as presenting two employee awards and rewarding five charities with $9,000. The $100 player awards are: Jason Childers - Henry Smock Award as the top relief pitcher (in memory of a longtime Indians season ticket holder) Jim Rushford - Highest Batting Average Shane Nance - Lowest ERA Jason Conti - Top Defensive Player Keith Luuloa - Versatility Award ON THE LEADER BOARD: Jim Rushford ranks fifth in the IL with a .311 average. HOT AT THE PLATE: Steve Scarborough has a seven-game hitting streak. He has four multi-hit games on the streak (.458, 11-for-24), and has raised his average to a season-high .240. FIELDING PROWESS: Steve Scarborough leads IL shortstops with a .964 fielding percentage. In 450 chances, Scarborough has committed just 16 errors. NANCE'S NUMBERS: In 28 appearances since May 23, LHP Shane Nance has allowed one run in 42.0 innings. In that period he has allowed just 22 hits and eight walks while striking out 42. Nance threw 34.2 scoreless innings, the longest streak in the minors this season, from May 16 through Aug. 18. UPCOMING PROBABLES: Sunday at Toledo - LHP Luis Martinez (4-0, 0.99) vs. RHP John Ennis (2-11, 5.68) Monday at Toledo - LHP Nate Teut (3-5, 4.41) vs. RHP Pat Ahearne (4-5, 3.36) -

Arizona Brewers 15, Arizona Angels 4 Arizona Box Score: Hey, how about 18-year-old RHP Tommy Hawk, your Arizona League ERA leader with a 2.31 mark in 47 IP! The team's ERA is 5.33. As of today, it takes 44 IP to qualify for the ERA title, hopefully that does not change after today's finale. Four doubles and five triples for the Maryvale kids -- those outfield power alleys must be something at the Angels' complex; the box score indicates "N Bates", but that's OF Dallas Bates for the Crew... Columbus (Yankees) 5, Indianapolis 4 Indy Site Game Summary: INDIANAPOLIS -- The Columbus Clippers picked up a 5-4 win in the first of a two-game set with the Indianapolis Indians at Victory Field on Friday evening. For the Tribe, the loss marks the second straight night that the team out-hit the opponent, yet failed to win the game. Mike Thurman earned the victory for Columbus (75-66) as the Clippers kept pace with the division-leading Louisville Bats. Thurman gave up nine hits in 6.0 innings, but picked up the win by getting the Indians to strand six runners on base during that span. Curtis Pride put the Clippers in front 3-1 in the top of the third inning when his three-run blast to deep center field off Indians starter Ben Ford brought home Erick Almonte and Marcus Jensen. Leading 3-2 heading into the top of the fifth inning, Columbus plated two more runs on a double off the bat of third baseman Drew Henson. Henson's double was the third straight hit in the inning off Ford (5-4), all of which came with two outs. Despite outhitting the Clippers 12-8, the Indians managed only single runs in the first and fourth innings, and two runs in the bottom of the seventh. Ryan Knox scored the first Indians run of the game in the bottom of the first when he led off the frame with a single. Knox then stole second base, advanced to third on Rich Paz's bunt single, and scored on Pete Zoccolillo's RBI single. Doug Jennings closed the gap to 3-2 in the fourth when he drove a Thurman pitch deep to right field for his fifth home run of the season, and first since July 19th. The Tribe's final two runs came in the bottom of the seventh when Zoccolillo's fourth hit of the ballgame was a two-run blast to right field off Columbus reliever Bret Prinz. Zoccolillo finished the game 4-for-5 with three RBI. Sam Marsonek pitched the final 1.1 innings for Columbus to pick up his 18th save of the season. The Indians and Clippers will conclude the two-game series on Saturday night, as the Indians play their final home game of the 2003 season. Derek Lee (2-4, 4.08) will take the mound for the Indians. 8/29/03 - Brewers (Sheets) @ Cubs (Clement)
MassBrew replied to squarepusher's topic in Archived Game Threads
From Baseball Prospectus: Speaking of the NL Central, the longest winning streak in baseball belongs to the Brewers, who have won 10 in a row to move out of last place. They've been doing it with their bats, scoring 68 runs during the streak and pulling out a number of squeakers, including yesterday's 10-inning triumph over the now-last-place Reds. It's just another data point in the argument that over a short enough span of time, any major-league team can win a whole bunch of games. Few teams will have as much opportunity to play spoiler in September as the Brewers will. They have six games left with the Cubs, six with the Cardinals, eight with the Astros, and three against the Diamondbacks. That's a lot of opportunities to be annoying. With so many games involving the Brew Crew, it's fair to say that how the three leaders play against the Brewers could be the deciding factor in the Central race. -
