Helena Independent Record Game Story: www.helenair.com/articles...803_01.txt In the other Pioneer League semifinal, Provo crushed Ogden, 20-5. Provo gave up the home field advantage as they play their home games at BYU, where Sunday games are not allowed. Provo will be favored in the deciding game three, but root for Ogden, otherwise, you'll have another championship final series without audio. Plus, it'd be fun playing against the recent home of the Brewer affiliate in the final. David Weiser's www.starsboxscore.com Huntsville Update: OH, DOCTOR!It was all about pitching and defense right down to the edge-of-your-seat finish, a big hit from a star prospect whose bat had been silent since July........ It was about three pitchers, two of whom will likely make up 2/5 of our rotation next year, and the coolness under tremendous pressure they faced as they got out of one jam after another....... It was about the silencing of two of Birmingham's biggest bats by the best pitching staff in the league, best in a nearly 20-year club history, and it was about the major league caliber defense, and a number of eye-popping, heart-stopping plays that kept the remainder of the team that did get on, from scoring at will....... It was about the manager who wasn't afraid to take chances, some of them wrong and unnecessary in hindsight, and some that made him look like a professor........ It was about a pitching coach, a successful hurler with the team so long ago, who instilled the confidence in his legions when they looked shaky, and dug out the will in them to overcome....... And I don't want to forget it was also about the two dozen or more fans who drove from Huntsville to Hoover Met since Friday. They cheered this team on and provided their vocal support from seats behind the Huntsville dugout. The Huntsville Stars closed the deal Sunday at 4:24 pm when Jon Hamilton popped up a 2-1 pitch to left field. Brad Nelson came in a few steps and with two hands on glove, locked in the team's 6th League Championship berth in 18 years......... Tuesday, the Carolina Mudcats come to Joe Davis Stadium to start the best-of-five battle for the title........ The Cats may be a tougher challenge then Birmingham. They had the 2nd best average (to Birmingham) and the 2nd best pitching staff in the league, and averaged almost seven runs a game in beating the Tennessee Smokies in four games, while the Stars held the Barons to an average of 2.6 runs a game, shutting them out twice, but only hit .196 themselves........ The Mudcats also beat us in the season series this year, 5-2. The 1994 Stars, with a tight-knit team of marginal prospects who could come up with a different hero nearly every night, won 81 games that season for a player-turned-manager, that like himself, was a disciple of plate patience........ As a result, that team led the Southern League in walks and finished 2nd in runs scored, despite hitting .251 --- 7th in the league........ While plate patience didn't become the 2003 Stars, scoring when they needed to did, behind the stingiest staff in the league, much the same as the 1994 crew who held the previous club ERA record......... It was pitching that glued the 2003 Stars right down to the end during this series and today's ballgame. Greg Bruso scattered just four hits and walked only one batter, but there were some tense moments........ Scott Bikowski, the only hitter in Birmingham's lineup who could solve the Stars' pitching staff, doubled all the way to the right field wall in the 2nd inning. Carlos Maldonado moved him over to third on a ground ball to J.J. Hardy, but Jon Hamilton stranded him on a fly out to Dave Krynzel........ The Barons left another runner in scoring position in the 4th inning, Bruso's toughest inning yet (21 pitches, only 9 for strikes)......... Bruso was consistently behind in the count this inning. Bruso was behind leadoff hitter Danny Sandoval, 2-and-0, but got him to foul out to catcher Kade Johnson on a 2-2 pitch. With two out, he walked Gabe Alvarez on four pitches, then another 3-ball count to Bikowski, who singled sharply to left, sending Alvarez to second. Bruso finally got out of the inning when Maldonado popped up Bruso's first pitch to Chris Barnwell on the infield.......... The Barons began to get a little impatient at the plate after that, swinging early to no avail. After retiring seven straight hitters, Bruso and the Stars found themselves in their biggest hair-puller of the game in the 7th inning........ Former Star Alvarez, the league's 4th leading hitter, broke an 0-for-15 slump and hit a 1-1 pitch into right-center. Bikowski followed with his second double. Alvarez was held at third, but Maldonado drove him in for his only RBI in the series, a fly out to left. Bruso cut the throw home off from Nelson to keep Bikowski from advancing on the throw........ Maldonado went 0-for-16 in this series after hitting .293 vs. the Stars the entire season with a team-high three HRs and 13 RBIs....... Jon Hamilton, the next hitter, grounded an 0-1 pitch to Hardy, who took one look to third, then took the safe route to first for the second out. Bruso then got out of the inning getting Guillermo Reyes to pop out to Barnwell near the mound....... In all, Bruso threw 88 pitches, 55 for strikes. Barons starter Enemencio Pacheco, on three days rest, was put on a pitch limit of 70-75 pitches, but he was retired after using 53 pitches to chalk up four scoreless innings....... Pacheco wasn't nearly as sharp as he was in Game One. The Stars threatened in each inning, leaving six runners on base, four of them in scoring position. In the 2nd, Kade Johnson struck out on a Pacheco fastball, leaving Brandon Gemoll on third........ A magnificent running catch in the left-center field gap by Chad Durham with 2 out in the 4th with two runners on, preserved a scoreless tie. Game Two loser Carlos Castillo was called in to start the 5th for Birmingham....... The Stars jumped on him quickly. Dave Krynzel, 0-for-15 with 8 Ks entering this game, picked up his 2nd hit of the game, sharply grounding a single to right........ Running on a 1-0 pitch, Hardy sliced a double down the right field line, allowing Dave to race home safely with the Stars' first run, as shadows began draping the row of seats I was sitting in, behind the Stars dugout on the third base side........ Hardy took third on Corey Hart's fly ball to right, then Gemoll, who hit .222 in the series, drove in Hardy with an RBI single to right. Castillo was done after walking Noochie Varner and the Stars were done as well......... Wally Backman, the former Met infielder, brought in the Barons' latest killer closer for next season, Ryan Meaux. He struck out Brad Nelson and retired the side in the 6th and 7th as well. The Stars would have only one more baserunner for the rest of the game --- Nelson, who walked in the 8th. The Barons would come knocking in the 8th and 9th, but Jeff Hundley and Chris Saenz would not let the big bad wolf in......... Tom Nicholson (4-for-14 in the series), legged out a double to center to lead off the 8th. On an 0-2 pitch, Chad Durham failed twice to move Nicholson on a bunt, then hit a two-hopper to Gemoll, playing well away from the first base bag. Gemoll, in a momentary fit of indecision, decided he'd better feed the ball to Hundley, rather than try to get the lead runner, and got the swift Durham on what turned out to be a bang-bang play......... With the tying run on third and one out, Hundley got Danny Sandoval to foul out behind the plate, bringing up Jeremy Reed........ The Stars' success to getting Reed was perhaps by pitching outside to him. Reed can stroke the outside pitch, in fact likes it, but he has tried to pull it, and with the expected results....... By this time, he was showing fits of frustration. Swinging on the first pitch, Reed, who led the Barons with a .455 average vs. Huntsville, capped a 2-for-19 series, by hiting an easy grounder to second baseman Chris Barnwell for the final out. Making only his second appearance for the Stars since his promotion from High Desert at the end of the season, Chris Saenz came on to face the middle of the order....... Assignment: protect a one-run lead and put the Stars on the Championship road........ Baseball doesn't get any better than this. Sitting on the edge of your seat, not knowing the outcome right down to the final pitch. Each out becoming another jump in your heart rate. Oh, Doctor. If there was ever a time to hold your head in your hands and sweat this out, this was it......... Gabe Alvarez comes to the plate. The Barons had been waiting and waiting, as they had on Jeremy Reed, for him to break out........ He never did either. Alvarez hit a wicked two-hopper, but right to J.J. who fired the ball to Gemoll. One out. Alvarez finishes the series 1-for-17 with 2 RBI......... Scott Bikowski, the only hitter to have a successful series for Birmingham, going 7-for-14, walked on four pitches. I don't know if it was intentional, but all four pitches were outside........ Maldonado up. Saenz falls behind 2-and-0. After fouling off a pitch, he hits a fly ball deep to right, but it's right in Noochie's sight and he clamps it in front of the track.......... Saenz disposed of Jon Hamilton for the last out, and the promise early in the season of a team that on paper, filled with the first wave of highly-rated prospects grown on Dean Taylor's farm, appeared to have all it needed to win a Championship, came another step closer to that promise fulfilled. Don't know yet who'll go in the first game of this series at the Joe..... I suspect Ben Hendrickson will be given the ball to make amends for a 4-run Birmingham blast that drove him from Game One, but we'll both know soon........ Tickets, I suspect, will go on sale tomorrow morning at the Joe........ For the Stars, and Stars fans, the season lives on. Pete Zoccolillo, who made his major league debut for the Milwaukee Brewers, Saturday night, going 0-for-4 and striking out, struck out as a pinch hitter in Sunday's game against Chicago........ Patrick Kinas, in his 11th season as voice of the Carolina Mudcats, won the Southern League Radio Broadcaster-of-the-Year award........ The Mudcats will come in Tuesday with one minor league graybeard who was with their team when they played the Stars for the 1994 Championship ---- Kevin Polcovich....... Polcovich, an infielder, was added to the Mudcats roster on August 13 and has played in just 13 games this season for Carolina. He played for Carolina from 1992-95 and 1997 and spent time in the majors with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1997 and 1998........ He is a career .267 hitter in the minors in a professional career that goes back to 1992. -

Beloit Site Game Summary: Beloit 4, Clinton (Rangers) 3 Best of three series tied, 1-1 With their backs against the ropes, the Beloit Snappers bounced back and fought their way back into the best of three divisional series with the Clinton LumberKings. The LumberKings came out and got on the board quickly in the first, taking a 1-0 lead on Calvin Carpenter and the Snappers. But the Snappers came right back in the first as Kennard Bibbs walked to lead-off the inning and then stole second base. Callix Crabbe then walked and he and Bibbs pulled a double steal to put runners on second and third with no one out. Tony Gwynn, Jr. hit a sacrifice fly to left to tie the game, 1-1. After Prince Fielder flew out, Rickie Weeks knocked an RBI single to make it 2-1 Snappers. The score remained 2-1 until the sixth. In the top of the sixth, Craig Ringe got a one-out single to ignite the LumberKings offense and Jose Gonzalez followed with a single and advanced to second as the Snappers attempted to get Ringe at third. With runners on second and third, Forrest Martin entered the game for Eric Henderson and promptly struck out Cameron Coughlan. Chris O'Riordan, Friday night's hero against Kane County, stepped to the plate against Martin. Martin unleashed a wild pitch scoring Ringe to tie the game, 2-2. O'Riordan then singled, knocking in Gonzalez to give the LumberKings a 3-2 lead. Again facing adversity, the Snappers answered. Crabbe walked again, chasing starter Sixto Urena from the game in favor of Brandon Luna. Luna was greeted with a Gwynn single and a Fielder bloop single which tied the game, 3-3. After Weeks struck out swinging, Travis Hinton walked to load the bases for Jeff Eure. Eure did his job and lifted a fly ball to deep right to score Gwynn with the go-ahead run, 4-3. Martin would settle down nicely and silence the LumberKings in the seventh and eighth innings before giving way to Bo Hall in the ninth. Hall pitched a perfect ninth with two strikeouts to nail down the save. The Snappers evened the best of three series at a game apiece. Game three will be played on Monday, September 8 at Pohlman Field in Beloit at 7:00 p.m. Nick Masset will take the hill for Clinton against Beloit's Dennis Sarfate. The winner will move on to face the Lansing Lugnuts in the Midwest League Championship Series. Winning Pitcher: Martin, 1-0 Losing Pitcher: Luna, 1-1 Save: Hall, 1 -

David Weiser's www.starsboxscore.com Huntsville Update: NOOCHIE MAYS?In this very memorable series, this may be the one that stands out. We'll see. I already believe it will stand the test of time, and land on the list of my Top 20 Stars games of all-time....... And it wasn't a game-winning hit or single pitching performance to make it one for the ages, it was two huge, game-saving catches turned by the Stars........ Just as people associate the 1954 World Series sweep of the Indians for Willie Mays' over-the-shoulder catch of Vic Wertz' long drive to center field, Noochie Varner should be remembered the same way in this one. I'm sure some fans were questioning the decision to put 13-game loser Pedro Liriano out there against Neal Cotts today. Cotts was 3-0 in three starts against the Stars this year, holding the offense to a .164 batting average and a ridiculous 0.47 ERA....... But Liriano, even though he was 1-3 against the Barons this year, was the Stars most effective pitcher against Birmingham, holding them to a .229 average and a 1.21 ERA....... Something had to give. After Cotts retired 12 of the first 13 Stars to face him in this ballgame, six on strikeouts, it did. After allowing a three-ball count only once in the game, Cotts walked Brandon Gemoll on a 3-1 pitch to start the 5th. That started the ball rolling........ Varner lined a 2-2 pitch into left for a base hit. Juan Piniella cut the throw off as Gemoll turned on the guns and made it into third. Varner, seeing the high throw draw Tom Nicholson way off the bag, took second, and the Stars had runners on second and third with nobody out, its biggest scoring opportunity of the series....... Brad Nelson then hit a chopper to first base, but Alvarez hesitated and his throw home to get Gemoll was ultimately off-line, and the Stars had a 1-0 lead......... Alejandro Machado was dropped into the nine hole today, which I thought was a good decision for this crucial game, since both he and Dave Krynzel, the Stars' 1-2 hitters in the lineup, were hitless in the series. Machado picked a great time to snap an 0-for-12 playoff slump, delivering a big single to right field, scoring Varner....... Chris Barnwell followed with an infield single up the middle, loading the bases. Only the fact that Reyes was defending the middle of the infield kept another run from scoring........ Krynzel came close to clearing the bases with a bullet over first, going just a foot or two foul, but he and J.J. Hardy struck out to get Cotts off the hook....... The Stars would not have another scoring opportunity until the 9th, when they made the most of Varner's leadoff single up the middle. Varner would score on Kade Johnson's one out double to left-center. Liriano struggled frequently with his control. Nothing unusual there. He went to a lot of three-ball count to hitters and finished his five innings after 86 pitches, 53 for strikes........ The Barons put a pair of runners in scoring position through the first four innings. Danny Sandoval, after a single to right to leadoff the game, was sacrificed to second by the next hitter, but both Jeremy Reed and Gabe Alvarez, who have had a very frustrating time in this series, were retired in order....... In the 4th, Reed did hit a one-out double to left. Nelson, two steps shy of the warning track, misjudged the flight of the ball and watched it go over his head........ Liriano, though, struck out Alvarez on a slider and retired Scott Bikowski on a 2-2 grounder to Machado to end the inning. The Stars had a few other close calls, none as close as in the 5th........ Liriano that inning walked three batters and hit one and wiggled out of it, leaving the bases loaded........ Carlos Maldondo was hit by a pitch, but he was doubled up on a Tom Nicholson liner right at Liriano's face. Pedro just stuck his glove up and retired a bewildered Maldonado. I'm sure Pedro was just as bewildered, because he walked the next three hitters to load the bases........ With this situation, Juan Piniella, 4-for-10 against Liriano, came to the plate, but Liriano saved his best, I guess, for last, for he struck him out on three pitches, the last on a checked swing. Mike Adams took over for the Stars and turned in the best relief performance in a playoff game, I'd say since 1986 when Doug Scherer in Game One of the 1986 Division Playoffs pitched five scoreless of a 13-inning game that the Stars evenually won against Knoxville. But despite getting the four-inning save, the credit for saving this game really belongs to Noochie Varner and J.J. Hardy....... The Barons had runners on 2nd and 3rd after a leadoff walk to Maldonado and a double down the right field line to pinch-hitter Jon Hamilton....... Coming through huge in the clutch, Adams caught Chad Durham looking at a brutal strike three slider for the second out of the 7th inning. Then Danny Sandoval, 2-for-6 vs. Adams during the year, hit a 2-1 pitch deep to right field and carrying. Varner raced to the track and á la Willie Mays, made a spectacular over-the-shoulder catch on the run to end the inning, and perhaps the game as well....... Robert Portnoy, "Voice of the Stars," said "it was one of the greatest catches you'll ever see"........ Varner high fived Krynzel as they ran off the field, a bit of taunting, perhaps, but that's how emotions run. Adams looked like he would have an easy 9th after an easy 1-2-3 8th, after Scott Bikowski flied to center and Carlos Maldonado fouled out, but this final inning was just as tension-packed....... Tom Nicholson legged out a double and Josh Shaffer, making his first playoff appearance, got credit for a single on a ball hit to Corey Hart that he was late making a throw on. That moved Nicholson to third........ Pinch-hitter Steve Morales stood in against Adams and swinging at his first offering, blooped the ball into shallow left. Just when it looked as if it would fall into no-man's land, Hardy laid out for an incredible diving catch to end the game........ Adams notched his 2nd save of the series, joining Steve Phoenix and Brian Mallette as the only pitchers in Stars history to record two or more saves in the post-season. In contrast to the Carolina-Tennessee series, which has been a bit of a slugfest, pitching and defense have been the hallmarks of this playoff showdown between Birmingham and Huntsville, and it's both that have kept the Stars alive to this point. The Stars were holding Birmingham to a .182 average, while the Stars were being held to a .174 mark........ While Dave Krynzel and Alejandro Machado were being held to a combined 0-for-22 in the first three games, Jeremy Reed and Gabe Alvarez, the Barons' two most depended-on hitters, were held to a harmless 1-for-21....... Both teams traded shutouts back-and-forth and outstanding fielding by both sides has kept runners off the basepaths. The catching tandem of Mike Kremblas and Kade Johnson threw out four straight Baron baserunners trying to steal, until Guillermo Reyes was successful in the 5th --- and there were plenty of highlight-reel catches and throwouts. Tomorrow, I plan to be at Hoover Met for Game 5....... It looks like the Barons will go with Enemencio Pacheco on three days rest, instead of Corwin Malone. The Stars will stick with Greg Bruso, although I wouldn't be surprised to see Chris Saenz share some of the pitching duties tomorrow....... The winner of this game will meet the Carolina Mudcats, who haven't gone to the Championship Series since 1995, when they won the SL title against Chattanooga....... Gotta mention this before I go. Pete Zoccolillo made his major league debut for the Milwaukee Brewers Friday night, flying out in a pinch-hit appearance. Saturday night, Zocco went 0-for-4, striking out once. He's the 141st Huntsville Star to make it to the top. -

STARS WIN, 3-0! Mike Adams with a four-inning save, and there will be a deciding Game Five at 2:00 PM Sunday in Birmingham! J.J. Hardy with a spectacular diving catch to end things with two Barons on base! Four shutouts in this series thus far... Defense won this one for the Stars, no doubt. Kade Johnson doubled in Noochie Varner for an insurance run in the top of the 9th. Folks still buzzing about Noochie's 7th inning catch. The Barons are bringing back the righthander Pacheco who dominated Game One so (two-hitter) on three days' rest on Sunday. As of "post time", newcomer Greg Bruso (from the Eric Young trade) is still scheduled to make his Stars' post-season debut. Too bad it's an afternoon affair, going up against the NFL, Cubs/Brewers, family outings, etc. It'd be nice to have archived audio for Sunday night, but I'm sure someone here will fill us in Sunday afternoon, it just won't be me next time around http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/ohwell.gif Nice to see these kids will be experiencing a deciding game, win or lose...what am I saying, win, of course! -

In Progress: Huntsville 0, Birmingham (White Sox) 0, after three innings Stars still looking for their first baserunner the first time through the lineup, the Barons' lefty Neal Cotts has K'd five of the first nine, only Corey Hart has lifted the ball out of the infield. Cotts, not known for pinpoint control, seems to be up 0-2 on each batter. As we've seen all season, the Stars' lineup can take advantage of mediocre pitching, but is overmatched versus upper echelon AA hurlers. Pedro Liriano has allowed a baserunner in each of the first three innings (two hits, one walk), but thanks to a nice Chris Barnwell double-play pivot and a Kade Johnson gundown of a would-be basestealer, Pedro's faced only one over the minimum. Stars' catchers are 4-for-4 in throwing out runners this series. C'mon, Stars! In-progress update : Huntsville 2, Birmingham 0, after five innings Pedro Liriano pitched around a misplayed Brad Nelson OF attempt-turned double in the 4th. In the top of the 5th, a Nelson fielder's choice grounder and an Alejandro Machado single plated the first runs of the game. Brandon Gemoll (walk) and Noochie Varner (single) scored the runs. The Stars stranded the bases loaded, however, in what could have been a huge inning, as David Krynzel and J.J. Hardy struck out for the final two outs of the inning. David just missed a bases-clearing triple (foul by a foot), and he's K'd in all three AB's thus far -- the way he's going, the top pitchers in the Arizona Fall League could squash whatever remaining confidence he has left from his 2003 season. Pedro Liriano has yet to have a 1-2-3 inning, and is treading dangerously with Birmingham line drives finding Huntsville fielders on at least three occasions to get him out of trouble. In the bottom of the 5th, Liriano walked three and hit a batter (a line drive double play erased one baserunner), yet worked out of trouble. Scary amazing. An interesting note -- other than backup catcher Mike Kremblas, your Huntsville bench consists only of Daryl Clark. Manager Frank Kremblas' decision to go with Machado, a switch-hitter against the lefty Cotts, as the DH, has proven thus far to be a wise choice. Should the Stars reach the finals, the DH won't be in place. The baseball gods are shining on the Stars thus far in this one... In-progress update : Huntsville 2, Birmingham 0, after seven innings "One of the greatest catches you'll ever see!" "Reminiscient of Willie Mays!" That's how Robert Portnoy described RF Noochie Varner's retreating, over-the-shoulder catch with runners on 2nd and 3rd, two outs in the bottom of the seventh. The catch kept Birmingham scoreless, used up another of Huntsville's seeming nine lives, and the Stars sneak closer to victory. Closer Mike Adams was brought in for the sixth inning and has pitched two scoreless thus far, again thanks to Noochie's heroics. -
Saturday's Daily Menu : All times Central; pitchers subject to change; pre-game audio begins approx. 15 minutes prior to game time listed... HUNTSVILLE: RHP Pedro Liriano at Birmingham (White Sox), 1:05 PM; Barons lead the best-of-five, 2-1; the one game that doesn't go up against part of Brewers / Cubs; for yours truly, some afternoon entertainment in the office as this will not be Stars' broadcaster Robert Portnoy's final call of the season! Well, we hope... Audio link: espn1450.com/ BELOIT: RHP Jason Baker at Clinton (Rangers), 7:00 PM, game one in the best-of-three league semi-finals. No Kane County? Sweet. Baker's made six starts in 21 appearances, but the offense might need to carry the load early on in this series. On the road for Game One, but home-field advantage in game three if needed; the bummer here, though -- no web audio, apparently, all series long http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/frown.gif HELENA: LHP Greg Kloosterman at Billings (Reds), 8:00 PM, game one in the best-of-three league semi-finals. Billings struggled mightily in the second half of the season, although the Brewers get the Mustangs' ace tonight, so Kloosterman's a fine choice for Manager Ed Sedar on the road. Home games await to round out the series. Be sure to flip over to this one after the Milwaukee game this evening. Audio link (opponent's): www.billingsmustangs.com/

David Weiser's www.starsboxscore.com Huntsville Update: SHUTOUT SWAPThis will be remembered as the shutout series, at least by me........ There are Huntsvillians who couldn't name a single player on this team, even those who come to one game a year, let alone anything else ("We got a great pitcher whatsisname, well we can't even spell it", from a group called "Alabama", no less). For this one, I traveled down to Hoover Met with some Booster Club members...... Hoover Met is one of the nicest parks in the league. It has nearly the same outfield dimensions as the Joe. It has an air of grandness from the outside with its decorative walks and an enormous facade behind the field level seating that serves to hold skybox holders (who can watch the game outside as well as inside, unlike The Joe) and acts as an echo chamber when the crowd gets excited........ The field level seats are similar to the upper level seats at JDS, except they're not cracked and broken. And they are more acutely slanted than at the Joe. There are no "nosebleed" seats, except at the skybox and press level........ And the scoreboard is in working order of course, another major difference. I enjoyed the dollar cokes, the same size that are still $2.50 at the Joe, even on the night they offered dollar cokes....... Wish I could say I enjoyed the ballgame as well........The reverberating noise of "thunder sticks" was not the issue, as it was with my traveling partners, it was the kind of ineptitude and impotence I saw again from the Stars tonight, the kind I saw too much of in August --- swinging at bad pitches, swinging on the first or second pitch (notice no Huntsville Star drew a walk tonight, and only Brandon Gemoll saw a 3-2 count. No one else saw a three-ball count of any kind), and the inability to score with two out. This looked like it wouldn't be the case In the 1st inning......... After Dave Krynzel and Alejandro Machado continued their hitless streaks in this series (0-for-14 coming in, now 0-for-22), J.J. Hardy and Corey Hart hit back-to-back singles, and Tetsu Yofu's wild pitch moved the runners to second and third......... With Gemoll, who was 6-for-11 off Yofu during the season, at the plate, Yofu tried to pick Corey off of second. J.J. broke for home and was a dead duck at the plate......... In the 2nd inning, this time down 3-0, the Stars loaded the bases with two out. Gemoll had led off with a single to left-center and two outs later, Chris Barnwell and Mike Kremblas singled........ Krynzel, on a 1-2 pitch, rapped a sharp grounder that looked like it might get through between third and short, but 3rd baseman Tom Nicholson ranged over and fielded the ball, and forced Kremblas out at second......... The Stars would not put two runners on base in the same inning for the rest of the game. The Barons kept putting runners on base and we kept taking them off, but unfortunately, that wasn't the case in the 1st inning (or later in the 6th, thanks only to a pair of careless errors)........ The Barons poked through the Stars defense. Not one of the Barons' four hits in that inning were hard-hit........ Chad Durham, Danny Sandoval, and Jeremy Reed hit back-to-back singles off starter Jason Shelley to load the bases. Reed had been held hitless in 7 at-bats until he blooped a hit inside the left field line...... Gabe Alvarez grounded Shelley's first pitch to Machado to score Durham....... Scott Bikowski, a .290 hitter with 12 RBIs vs. the Stars this season, hit a 3-2 worm-killer through the right side for a 2-run single, and a 3-0 lead........ Bikowski later kept a two-out rally alive in the 6th by fouling off four pitches, while working the count full, before getting a walk........ That retired Shelley, who threw 99 pitches, 57 for strikes....... The Stars, however, gave the Barons two extra outs that inning. Jeremy Reed hit a one-out ground ball right to Hardy for an easy throwout, but the usually infallible shortstop could not find the handle on the ball, allowing Reed to reach........ Reed was forced out by Gabe Alvarez, but Alvarez eventually reached third when Carlos Maldonado's easy grounder came off the glove of Machado for another error........ Instead of being out of the inning, Jon Hamilton singled to right, scoring Alvarez and Bikowski. The Stars have now averaged just 1.7 runs per game in their last 13 meetings with Birmingham........ Not a hopeful sign for a team that now must win to keep their season alive......... Pedro Liriano (9-13, 3.65), who was 2-3 with a 6.32 ERA in August, will be the Stars' clutch starter, while the Barons go with Neal Cotts (9-7, 2.16), whose confidence has needed a boost since going 1-1 with an 8.10 ERA in four starts with the White Sox recently......... Cotts held Huntsville hitters to a .164 average in 3 starts during the season, all of which he won....... The Stars have hit .174 in this series........ If the series goes to game #5, the Barons now will go with Corwin Malone, who is familiar with playoff pressure, having beaten the Stars in Game 1 of the 2001 playoff series. -
