Modesto (A's) 3, High Desert 2 High Desert Game Summary: The Mavs' site is having update issues, so Mike Lindskog was kind enough to file his game report via email with Brewerfan... Modesto, CA - The High Desert Mavericks dropped their second straight game on Saturday night, losing a close one to the Modesto A's by a final score of 3-2. Danny Kolb pitched one of his best games of the season, striking out a season-best ten men. Kolb (5-12) matched A's starter Marc Sauer (4-2) until the bottom of the seventh inning, when the A's scored two runs to take a 3-1 lead. With two outs, Jed Morris hit a bleeder through the right side of the infield for a base hit. Mark Teahen lifted a fly ball to left field that was misplayed by left fielder Johnny Raburn. Morris scored the go-ahead run as the A's took the lead for good at 2-1. Jason Perry followed with a run-scoring single as the A's went up 3-1. The Mavs got within a run in the eighth, as Scott Candelaria picked up his third hit of the night, and his second RBI, driving in Chris Morris from third base. After Froilan Villanueva legged out an infield single to put runners at first and second, John Toner was robbed of a base hit by an over-the-shoulder catch by Omar Quintanilla. In the ninth, Jeff Coleman shut down the Mavs in order, striking out Jeremy Frost to end it, and record his fourth save. The Mavs and A's square off on Sunday night in the final road game of the year for the Mavs. Chad Petty (0-9) takes on Christian Gonzalez (3-2) at 6:05 (8:05 Central) from Modesto. Indy Site Game Summary: Richard Paz is a minor league free agent at season's end - the Brewers will surely see if they can re-sign him, but a 40-man roster spot is unlikely; we'll have to see how Jason Childers' hand is -- see below... LOUISVILLE, KY -- Richard Paz and Pete Zoccolillo combined for seven hits in eight at bats as the Indianapolis Indians picked up a 9-6 victory over the Louisville Bats on Saturday evening in the second game of a three-game series at Slugger Field. The Indians tied a season-high with 17 hits in the ballgame as Pasqual Coco earned his team leading 10th victory on the year. Paz followed up a 3-for-3 night on Friday by going 4-for-4 with a walk in Saturday night's game, and has now reached base safely an amazing nine straight times over the first two games of the series while raising his batting average to .350 on the season. Zoccolillo, meanwhile, was 3-for-4 with two doubles and five RBI in the game, driving home runs in the first, fifth, sixth, and eighth innings. Trailing 3-1 heading into the top of the fifth inning, the Tribe offense sent eight batters to the plate against Louisville starter Chris Michalak (1-1) en route to scoring four runs to take a 5-3 lead. In the inning, Zoccolillo provided the key blow with a two-run double to score Coco and Paz with two outs which gave the Tribe a 4-3 lead. The Indians (59-75) added to their lead in the very next inning by again sending eight batters to the plate, this time scoring three runs against Bats reliever Lance Davis to take an 8-3 lead. After giving up three runs in his first two innings, Coco settled down to retire nine in a row before allowing a one out single in the bottom of the fifth. Coco allowed a two-run home run to Calvin Pickering in the bottom of the first, and gave up an RBI single to Mark Budzinski in the second. Ahead 8-3 in the bottom of the sixth, Coco allowed his second home run of the day to Pickering, a leadoff shot to left centerfield. Coco left after 6.0 innings leading 8-5, having allowed eight hits. At the plate Coco helped his cause by picking up two hits in three at bats while scoring two runs and driving home two more. Roberto Giron picked up the save for Indianapolis when he became the third Tribe pitcher used in the bottom of the ninth inning. Travis Miller relieved Shane Nance, who had struck out five in his two innings of relief, by walking the leadoff man Budzinski and then allowing a single to Wilton Guerrero. With runners on first and third and still no outs, Jason Childers was brought into the game to face Emil Brown. Childers faced only one batter, however, as Brown lined into a fielder's choice that first ricocheted off of Childers' hand before Wilton Veras picked it up and threw out Guerrero at second base. Following the play Childers was removed in favor of Giron, who pitched the final 0.2 innings to earn his 15th save of the season. The Indians will look for a sweep of the three-game series on Sunday when righthander Ben Ford (4-3, 2.57) takes the mound for the Indians to face Scott Randall (10-3) and Louisville. The Indians then return home to Victory Field to open the final homestand of the 2003 season when the Bats also make the trip from Louisville for a brief two-game set at Victory Field. -
Saturday's Daily Menu : That "TBD" guy is pitching at three levels for the Milwaukee system today; we could research things and make semi-educated guesses as to who's starting in each case, but we'll let the games fall into place and see who takes the mound... Apparently it was more than rain in Helena: Helena and Provo were hailed out when a freak storm came across Mount Helena Friday Night. There will be a double-header played Saturday night. For all the parents of the rookie league players away from home for the first time, we've had incredible record heat in Arizona, terrible wildfires causing smoky conditions in Helena, and now this. Now all we need is for the Helena bus to be stranded for ten hours by hitting a cow in the road (Brewers' Ogden team, 2002). -

The Brewers have informed us that Helena catcher Alberto Segura did injure his right wrist in a collision with an opposing player on the 20th. In an unrelated and less interesting move given it's the tail end of a lackluster AAA season, LHP Travis Miller has been activated from Indy's disabled list. -

Indianapolis Media Notes for Friday thru Sunday: THIS WEEKEND: The Indians head to Louisville on the heels of a two-game sweep at Columbus. The Indians are just 2-9 against the Bats this season including a 1-4 mark at Slugger Field. On Aug. 19, the Indians began a stretch of 16 straight games against IL West rivals. The Tribe is 2-3 in this stretch, and 13-24 against division foes overall this season. The Indians offense has been slow to heat up in August. Through the first 22 games of the month, the Tribe bats are hitting .252 and have scored 63 runs (2.86 rpg). The Indians have been held to two or fewer runs in 11 of the 22 games. The Indians are a season-low 18 games under .500 for the first time since July 20, 1993. The last time the Indians have been more than 18 games below .500 was on Sept. 3, 1990 when the Tribe finished the season 24 games under (61-85). THE "HOME" STRETCH: The final month of the season is truly the "home" stretch for the Indians. From July 29 through Aug. 30, the Tribe plays 22 home games in 33 days. The Indians are 11-14 in that stretch, including a 9-7 mark at Victory Field. ON THE MOUND: Lefthander Nate Teut will make his 12th start and 17th appearance Friday. Teut's last win came on July 20 against Norfolk. Since then he is 0-2 with three no decisions. The Indians have won all three of the games when Teut has not received a decision. Teut's last outing came on Aug. 16 against Norfolk. He gave up five runs on nine hits in 4.2 innings. Teut faced the Bats on July 4 and took the loss in a 3-1 contest allowing two runs in five innings. Righthander Pasqual Coco makes his team-leading 26th start on Saturday. Coco also paces the Tribe with nine wins, 133.1 innings and 92 strikeouts. This will be his second attempt at win number 10. He took the loss in his last start, Aug. 17 vs. Norfolk, allowing five runs in five innings. Coco was called for three balks in that game. Coco made back-to-back starts against the Bats in April and took the loss in both outings. He combined to give up nine runs in 11.0 innings. At the plate, Coco is hitting .278 this season and had a five-game hitting streak snapped in his last start. Righthander Ben Ford will get the ball Sunday. This will be his fifth start since coming back into the rotation on Aug. 2, and his eighth start overall. In his last four starts, Ford is 1-0 with a 2.03 ERA (6 ER / 26.2 IP). He has allowed just one earned run in each of his last three starts (1.35 ERA). Ford's last start was a complete game effort against Toledo in the first game of a doubleheader on Aug. 18. He allowed six hits and one walk while striking out six in seven innings. Ford has made three relief appearances against Louisville this season allowing one earned run in 5.0 innings. ON THE LEADER BOARD: Jim Rushford ranks fourth in the IL with a .313 average and fifth with a .377 on-base percentage. From the Helena Independent Record: The Helena Brewers have lost their second catcher of the season. Alberto Segura broke his wrist Wednesday night and is out for the year. Brewers backstop Lou Palmisano was lost for the year earlier this month. This is a bummer, as the 19-year-old Dominican product is something of a sleeper prospect, having bypassed the Arizona League coming off a kick-butt 2002 in the DSL in which he walked nearly twice as often as he struck out. He was producing just fine, thank you, in Helena as well. (We have a note in to the Brewers asking which wrist is broken and how it occurred.) Alberto Segura's 2003 numbers: www.baseballamerica.com/c...r=segura+c Segura's Brewerfan Player Profile Page: Check out the 2002 numbers; squarepusher, please look into why the 2003 numbers are not up-to-date -- thanks! www.baseballamerica.com/c...r=segura+c For now, it seems that 2003 12th round pick Carlos Corporan and super-versatile Racine, Wisconsin product Vinnie Rottino will split Helena catching duties. -

The Helena Independent Record reports that LHP Gabriel Mendoza was given his release from the Helena squad in order to make room for RHP Tim Dillard. The 21-year-old Venezuelan was in his fifth season in the Brewer system and had posted some nice secondary numbers along the way; you wonder if a recent stint and return from the injury list added to the reasons behind his outright release. Man, that's got to be a long, lonely and sad bus / plane trip from Helena to Venezuela. Another Epy Guerrero signing is gone -- don't kid yourselves folks, Epy's record with the Brewers is far from impressive, some might say he's contributed more with two sons in the system as (batting coaches) than signed prospects. Here's hoping Luis Martinez changes that view...
