Final, Game One: Helena 4, Billings (Reds) 3 Nic Carter pitches a 1-2-3 eighth. Terry Trofholz leadoff bunt single, to second on a wild pitch, to third on a wild pickoff attempt by the Billings catcher. Drew Anderson walks. We're off to a fun start tonight, kids! I've enjoyed some of the best audio moments of the season already here... In progress, Game One: Billings 3, Helena 3, after seven in Helena (scheduled for seven innings) Down 3-1 going into the bottom of the 7th, Drew Anderson led off with a walk on a close 3-2 pitch. Next up, Cap'n Lou Palmisano. On an 0-2 pitch, the Cap'n drives one deep over the LF fence for a two-run blast and a tie ball game. The Brewers had been out-hit 11-2 entering the 7th! Manny Ramirez drove the Billings starter from the game with a one-out single. Vinnie Rottino followed with a single of hiw own, putting men on 1st and 2nd with one out. Manuel Melo dribbled a ball in front of the plate, beating out an infield single to load the bases. Augustin Septimo hit into a 4-2 force out at the plate. Guilder Rodriguez grounded out to end the 7th, smashing his helmet in disgust as he crossed first base. (Former?) OF Nic Carter came into a tight game as a pitcher in the top of the 7th, making his fourth pitching appearance since joining Helena. Apparently, he was throwing gas, and he struck out a couple of Mustangs' batters. As of 8:50 PM Central, this one's now in extra innings. Your audio link is above within the Daily Menu. -

Game One: Huntsville 3, Mobile (Padres) 2 In this seven-inning contest, the Stars rally in their last at-bat! In the bottom of the 7th, down 2-0, J.J. Hardy led off with a base hit. After a hard-hit Corey Hart fly-out, Brandon Gemoll doubled Hardy to third. Noochie Varner was intentionally walked, bringing up Brad Nelson. Nelson got his bat on the ball at the very least, reaching first base on an error (poor throw) by the Mobile shortstop. This scored Hardy, and the bases remained loaded. Kade Johnson was next, and after just missing a game-winning hit down the line (foul by a foot), Johnson struck out. Down to their final out, Chris Barnwell came on to pinch-hit for the pitcher's spot. On a 2-0 count, ball three was mishandled by the Bay Bears' catcher for a passed ball, scoring Gemoll -- tie game. Barnwell walked. Amazingly, the Mobile closer had to leave the game at this point due to some sort of injury. Tough spot for the new reliever against the Stars' Alejandro Machado. Machado walked on a 3-1 count, driving in the game-winning run. Very unorthodox and pretty lucky, and the Stars steal one here. Starter Jeff Housman with another very strong start: 6 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 5 K, 1 HR LH Reliever Jeff Hundley gave up what almost was a critical insurance run in the seventh in his Huntsville debut, and actually gets the win. -

Two Moves To Fill Out the High Desert Roster: Now 23 years old, 6'5" RHP J.M. Gold (the eighth overall pick in the 1998 draft) has been activated from the Mavericks' disabled list. Gold has been rehabbing an arm injury in Arizona -- he's been on the DL since May 14th. Gold's in his second season on the 40-man roster of the Brewers, meaning that 2004 will be the final year that Gold could be bounced between Milwaukee and the minor leagues without being exposed to waivers. Obviously, J.M.'s a long way from making that an issue, but once again, we wish him well during this go-round. J.M. Gold Brewerfan Player Profile Page: www.brewerfan.net/ViewPla...ayerId=150 J.M. Gold's Power 50 History Tracker Page: www.brewerfan.net/ViewPow...ayerId=150 A new Maverick is up all the way from the Arizona Brewers. Catcher/3B Charlie Lozada just turned 18 years old in June, and we have to believe he's now the youngest player in the California League. Lozada's been rolling along in Arizona, hitting .348 (.848 OPS) in 67 AB's. He should be able to spell banged-up catchers Brian Foster and Joel Alvarado. This is the first year of pro ball of any kind for the native of the Dominican Republic. Even if the parent Brewers are intent on keeping the Beloit and Helena catching corps together for the playoffs, you have to think Lozada wouldn't be in a Mavs' uniform if he weren't capable of handling a pitching staff as well. From Mark McCarter in the Huntsville Times: Ryan Gripp, a mainstay on the Huntsville bench, was released Wednesday. Gripp, who is getting married in September, reportedly asked for his release. He had also grown increasingly frustrated with his role and lack of playing time, said clubhouse sources. Gripp batted .285 in 67 games, but was primarily used as a pinch-hitter. A first baseman and third baseman by trade, he was caught behind Corey Hart at third and Brandon Gemoll at first, and the recent addition of Brad Nelson led to even fewer appearances. If and until Mike Jones returns to the DL, the Stars' roster is full with the addition of Jeff Hundley from High Desert. It should be noted that as of Monday the 11th, both the AA and AAA rosters will be eligible to grow from 23 to 24 active players. EDIT: I guess the award presentation on the 15th will be somewhat awkward: www.huntsvillestars.com/s...newsId=260 -
Thursday's Daily Menu : Fill your plates, eight box scores to review Friday AM; Brewer matinee today -- partake of the web audio feast tonight! We'll be plugging in the standings for playoff-contending Huntsville and Beloit within the Daily Menu while pertinent; Huntsville's fighting for a second-half crown that would provide additional home field advantage in the playoffs; Beloit's looking to qualify with a second-half division championship -- they can also automatically qualify for the playoffs with a second-place division finish. As for the Arizona Brewers, their playoff situation is unique. According to minorleaguebaseball.com, the Phoenix-area team with the best record plays the Tucson-area team with the best record in a one-game championship. But since there's also a first and second half to the season, we're just way too confused about it, and we'll just track the games http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif , although our boys are 4-2 in the second half thus far... Final: Rancho Cucamonga (Angels) 9, High Desert 3 High Desert Site Game Summary: ADELANTO, CA ? Jake Woods pitched seven strong innings on Wednesday night, as the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes defeated the High Desert Mavericks by a final score of 9-3 at Mavericks Stadium. Woods (9-6) allowed two runs on three hits over seven innings, in running his record to 4-0 against the Mavs this year. Woods struck out four without walking a batter. Woods gave up a one-out triple to Froilan Villanueva in the second, who later scored on Jeremy Frost?s sac fly. Villanueva later hit a line drive home run to left field in the seventh off Woods, accounting for the only two runs allowed by the left-hander. The Quakes took the early lead against Mavs starter Dan Hall (6-11), as Azarias Corbeil hit his third homer of the year, a two-run shot to right field in the second, giving the Quakes a 2-0 lead. Leading 2-1 in the fifth, the Quakes chased Hall, as they loaded the bases for Casey Kotchman. Hall plunked Kotchman to force in a run and give the Quakes a 3-1 lead. Hall then gave way to Danny Stout who allowed all three inherited runners to score for a 6-1 Quakes? lead. Hall allowed six runs on the night, five of which were earned, one nine hits. Stout gave up a three-run homer to Mike Eylward, his 12th of the year, in the top of the seventh to make it a 9-1 ballgame. After Villanueva?s sixth homer of the year in the seventh, the Mavs made it 9-3 in the eighth, as Ralph Santana walked with the bases loaded against Quakes reliever David Wolensky. Scott Candelaria lined out to third for the second out of the inning and Daryl Clark popped up to left field, ending any hopes for a rally. Justin Gordon worked a scoreless eighth, before Tommy Marx fanned Troy Glaus looking in a scoreless ninth. Glaus, down from the Anaheim Angels with a sore right shoulder, went 1-4 with an RBI and a run scored. He walked once and struck out twice on the evening. Glaus is expected to be in the lineup on Thursday as the Mavs and Quakes wrap up the four-game series. Danny Kolb (4-9) goes for the Mavs in the finale, as he takes on Eddie Ramirez (0-1) of the Quakes. Game time at Mavericks Stadium is at 7:05 (9:05 Central). For the overnighters, as I call it a night... In progress: Rancho Cucamonga (Angels) 9, High Desert 3, after 8.5 innings Tommy Marx sees action here in the ninth (Troy Glaus strikes out looking), so confirming a Saenz - Petty - Kolb - Ebert - Hall rotation now, I imagine. Barring the Mavericks' first ninth-inning win this year, not a stellar Link Report when only Indy and the Mavs see action (nothing personal, guys). -

Game One: Toledo (Tigers) 3, Indianapolis 2 Game Two: Toledo 5, Indianapolis 3 Indy Site Doubleheader Summary: TOLEDO, OHIO -- Cecil Cooper had never thrown a base before. But with his team facing its fourth straight loss, and sixth defeat in seven games, the Indianapolis Indians manager figured drastic measures were needed. His antics temporarily put enough fire in the Indians to push across two runs in the second game of a doubleheader, but Toledo's Patrick Lennon's two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth gave the Mud Hens a sweep of the twinbill, 3-2 and 5-3. After the Indians dropped the opener, Mark Smith gave the team an early lead in the nightcap when he led off the second inning with his team-leading 15th home run of the season. The Tribe looked to add to the lead in the fourth when Smith delivered a one-out single. Pete Zoccolillo followed with a long drive to right which was originally ruled a two-run home run by first base umpire Damien Beals. After a brief argument by Toledo skipper Larry Parrish, the three umpires conferred and changed the call to a ground rule double. That brought the mild-mannered Cooper storming out of the dugout in disgust. After a lengthy argument with Beals, Cooper threw his hat down before reaching down and picking up first base. After continuing his argument, Cooper tossed the bag towards home plate before departing the game as the first Tribe manager to be ejected in over three seasons. With the runners returned to second and third base, the Mud Hens gave an intentional pass to Cody McKay to load the bases for Wilton Veras who brought a .229 average into Wednesday's action. Veras delivered a single into right-center to plate the two runs and give the Tribe a 3-0 lead. The spark in the Tribe extinguished itself quickly, however, as the next two batters were retired to end the inning. After a lead-off single by Jason Conti in the fifth, the final nine Indians went down in order. Toledo tied the game with three runs in their half of the fifth. Tribe starter Derek Lee, who allowed only one hit in 7.2 innings in his last start, had allowed only one baserunner through the first four innings. The first three Hens reached safely to start the fifth, however, and Omar Infante cleared the bases with a double over Conti's head in center to tie the game. With the game knotted at three, Lennon belted his seventh homer of the season, a two-run shot off of Roberto Giron (0-4), in the bottom of the sixth to give Toledo the win. The Mud Hens (59-59) also came from behind to win the opener. Jim Rushford hit a two-run homer in the first inning to give the Tribe the lead, but Toledo put together a three-run uprising in the fifth to claim the victory. Andres Torres' two-run double capped the inning. Nate Robertson (8-7) was the winner in game one while Pasqual Coco (8-7) took the loss. Toledo closer Fernando Rodney closed out both games to earn his 20th and 21st saves. The Indians (50-67) have fallen 17 games below .500 for the first time since Aug. 7, 1993. They will attempt to salvage one game of the series in the finale Thursday night. Ben Ford (3-3) will face Toledo's Seth Greisinger (5-7). New Items from the Indy Media Notes: TONIGHT: The Indians meet Toledo in a doubleheader to open a three-game series and a three-game road trip. The Indians are coming off of an eight-game homestand on which they went 4-4, including losing four of the last five. If the Tribe drops the opener tonight, they will be 16 games under .500 for the third time this season. They have not been 17 games below .500 since Aug. 7, 1993. The Indians have had eight games postponed due to rain this season. Tonight's doubleheader is the result of two postponements at Toledo earlier this season. The teams were washed out on April 7, and rescheduled the game for June 4. Unfortunately, rain washed that make-up game out as well. The Indians and Hens have met successfully six times this season with each team winning three of the contests. Each team is 2-1 at the other's home ballpark. The teams played a home and home series June 3-6 with each team winning twice. Tonight will be the Indians sixth doubleheader of 2003. The Tribe has recorded one sweep and two splits, and has been swept once. ON THE MOUND: Righthander Pasqual Coco makes his team-leading 23rd start in game one. He also leads the Indians with eight wins, 115.1 innings and 83 strikeouts. This will be Coco's second start against Toledo. On June 3, he turned in one of his finest outings of the season working seven innings and allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits. He struck out a season-high nine Mud Hens. That victory was the fourth in a string of seven straight that came over 12 starts from May 4 - June 28. Since then, Coco is 0-2 in five starts, although he allowed just one earned run over six innings against Durham in his last start. Lefthander Derek Lee will pitch the nightcap making his fifth start and eighth appearance since being promoted from Huntsville on July 4. Lee is coming off an outstanding performance July 31 against Durham. Lee had a perfect game through 6.0 innings before allowing a lead-off single in the seventh. He finished with one hit and one walk in 7.2 innings striking out nine. UPCOMING PROBABLES: Thursday at Toledo - RHP Ben Ford (3-3, 3.02) vs. RHP Seth Greisinger (5-7, 4.32) -

As first reported on the High Desert site, LHP Jeff Hundley should be available for action tonight in Huntsville. Here's what we said back in mid-May when Hundley was first signed: High Desert added another pitcher to its staff, as the Brewers signed LHP Jeff Hundley. The Warren, Ohio native is 27-39 with a 4.49 ERA over five years as a starter and a reliever. The 26-year-old was a 7th round draft pick by Anaheim in 1998 out of Bowling Green University. He has experience at AA and AAA as well. Wednesday's Daily Menu : Do they still run Wednesday is "Prince Spaghetti Day" ads, like they did years ago here in the Northeast? Fielder would be a natural tie-in, both in name and well, girth http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif ... The Phoenix-area team with the best record plays the Tucson-area team with the best record in a one-game championship. But since there's also a first and second half to the season, we're just way too confused about it, and we'll just track the games http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif . Stealth catching prospect Jeremy Frost with 2 walks tonight and a base hit. Frost will be 24 in November and has yet to pick up his catcher's mitt this year, igor. With Joel Alvarado barely able to maintain a limp right now and Brian Foster banged up, the fact that Frost has yet to see action behind the plate in High Desert is quite telling. He needs to keep slugging away to stay on the radar. He's basically Keith Luuloa of Indy, just five years younger and two levels behind.
