  2. Beloit 7, Cedar Rapids (Angels) 4 River Bandits' Site Game Summary: Prince Fielder's two-run home run in the top of the third inning broke a 3-3 tie and sent the Beloit Snappers past the Cedar Rapids Kernels, 7-4, Wednesday before a paid crowd of 4,475 on Mediacom/Fox Sports Net Fireworks Night at Veterans Memorial Stadium. The loss dropped the Kernels to 10-11 in the second half of the Midwest League race. Beloit is 11-10. The Kernels scored twice in the bottom of the first inning to take a 2-1 lead. Erick Aybar rocketed a one-out triple to right and scored on Alberto Callaspo's line single off Beloit pitcher Dennis Sarfate (7-2). A pair of walks loaded the bases and Callaspo scored on Greg Porter's single. The Kernels left the bases loaded when Caleb Maher flied out to shallow left and Jake Mathis grounded out. Beloit reclaimed the lead, 3-2, in the top of the second on Callix Crabbe's two-run single. Aybar's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the second tied the score, 3-3. Fielder's 17th home run, a two-run, opposite-field shot to left, put Beloit back on top, 5-3, in the top of the third. The Snappers tacked on runs in the fifth and sixth innings to build their lead to 7-3. Travis Hinton had an RBI double and Crabbe a run-scoring single. 3. Inland Empire (Mariners) 3, High Desert 2 High Desert Site Game Summary: SAN BERNARDINO, CA - The High Desert Mavericks lost their ninth straight game on Wednesday night, losing to the Inland Empire 66ers by a final score of 3-2 at Arrowhead Credit Union Park in San Bernardino. Mavs starter Chad Petty (0-5) had the best outing of his brief Maverick career, pitching eight solid innings, allowing just three runs on seven hits. Petty's offense didn't give him enough support though, despite working only the second complete game of the year for the High Desert pitching staff. Inland Empire jumped out to a 2-0 third inning lead. Eddie Menchaca doubled home Ismael Castro for a 1-0 lead and later scored to make it 2-0. Menchaca would again knock in Castro, this time in the fifth, as the 66ers took a 3-0 lead. The Mavs finally got on the board against 66ers starter Ryan Ketchner (10-3) in the sixth inning. Jason Belcher's two-out single plated Froilan Villanueva, as the Mavs made it 3-1. High Desert's struggling offense got their second run in the eighth, as Ozzie Chavez scored from second base on an error by Inland Empire's John Castellano at first base. Ketchner retired Scott Candelaria on a ground ball to second with the tying run at first base though, ending the Maverick threat. In the ninth, Justin Blood was brought out of the 66ers bullpen and retired Brad Nelson. Emiliano Fruto then struck out Jeremy Frost and Johnny Raburn to end the game, earning his first save of the year. With the win, Ketchner improves to 4-0 against the Mavs and is the Cal League's first 10-game winner. The ninth straight loss is a new high for the Mavs, who are 32 games under .500 at 28-60. Jeff Hundley (0-1) will go for the Mavs on Thursday night in San Bernardino. The 66ers will throw left-hander Glenn Bott (3-5). Game time is 7:05 (9:05 Central) from Arrowhead Credit Union Park. The Mavs return home on Friday, July 11th as they face Rancho Cucamonga at Mavericks Stadium. High Desert Box Score: Brad Nelson with his second game in LF; by necessity on this squad? 4. Yes, but from Indy's site: Bill Hall was moved into the lead-off spot in the lineup June 7 and has gone 34-for-102 (.333) with 23 runs scored, 12 doubles, two home runs, eight walks and five stolen bases in 25 games since. Hall has hit safely in 32 of his last 38 games. In that period, he's batting .314 (50-for-159). Hall had back-to-back eight-game hitting streaks in June (June 7-16 and 18-26).
  5. Analyzing an Arizona box score is always an adventure. Switch-hitting 20-year-old Venezuelan SS Gilberto Acosta has only made one error in 13 games, is 7-for-7 in SB attempts, and pushes his OPS closer to .950 with today's performance. Not a bad start to the season; he hit .315 in 184 Arizona AB's last year. CF Charlie Fermaint is now 20-for-45; eventually he'll take that first walk, but for now, the hack attack sure is working nicely for the 17-year-old. He's a RH bat. Another 17-year-old, Alvaro Martinez, struck out eight in 3.2 IP. He's the 6'7" (and still growing) RHP. He's got to be a scary sight for opposing batters. I'm going to need some help with this next one. Batting cleanup, at catcher, with his first four AB's of the year, A. Correa, which must be Alex, the soon-to-be 21-year-old with two years in the DSL and two years in Arizona already under his belt. But all as a pitcher! Now the Giants were 6-for-6 in SB attempts, and Correa made two errors, so it wasn't a great day behind the plate. Here's the additional kicker -- Correa is left-handed! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/eek.gif Clancy, I apologize for knocking the let's convert Brandon Gemoll to catcher idea you were pushing. We'll try to verify if that was indeed Alex Correa behind the plate (and batting cleanup). It's not like the Maryvale team is hurting for catchers, even with Simon Guhring in Germany.
  6. Norfolk (Mets) 5, Indianapolis 3 Reminiscient of the tough High Desert loss last night -- really now, it seems closers are struggling throughout the organization this month, except for Helena... Indy Site Game Summary: INDIANAPOLIS -- The visiting Norfolk Tides came to life in the top of the ninth inning, scorching closer Roberto Giron for four runs to take a 5-3 come-from-behind victory over the Indianapolis Indians on Wednesday afternoon. The late comeback spoiled a solid one-run, eight-inning effort by Tribe starting pitcher Pasqual Coco as the Tides evened the four-game series at one apiece. Norfolk sent nine batters to the plate against Giron in the top of the ninth inning, the first four of which all crossed home plate. Jorge Velandia and Marco Scutaro started the inning off with leadoff singles putting runners on first and second for Tsuyoshi Shinjo, whose sacrifice bunt was fielded by Giron and thrown wide of first baseman Keith Luuloa allowing Velandia to score and Scutaro to move on to third base. Matt Watson then ripped an RBI double scoring Scutaro with the tying run and sending Shinjo to third base. Following a ground out to Giron by Russ Johnson and an intentional walk to Mike Glavine, pinch hitter Dan Garcia ripped a single to left field scoring Shinjo and Watson to give the Tides their first lead of the day at 5-3. Norfolk's late-inning heroics came after Coco held the Tides to only one run on five hits over his eight innings prior to a 56-minute rain delay that hit Victory Field in the bottom of the eighth inning. The Tribe opened the scoring in the bottom of the first when Ryan Knox scored on Mark Smith's RBI groundout. With the score tied at one in the bottom of the fifth inning, Tribe third baseman Wilton Veras connected on his first home run in nearly a year when he belted Tides starter Mike Bacsik's pitch over the left field wall to give the Indians a 2-1 lead. The Tribe added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning off of reliever Heath Bell when Bill Hall led off the inning with a double to right before scoring on Pete Zoccolillo's sacrifice fly two batters later. Ed Almonte pitched the ninth inning for Norfolk to record his 16th save of the season, allowing one hit while also striking out one batter. The Indians (40-51) and Tides (46-45) will continue the four-game series on Thursday night at 7 p.m. at Victory Field when lefty Nate Teut (1-3, 3.12) takes the mound for Indianapolis to face Jason Scobie (1-2, 4.95). More here shortly, but since Indy has a matinee today, we'll kick the Daily Menu off with them: INDIANAPOLIS: RHP Pascual Coco vs. Norfolk (Mets), 2:00 PM Central Time Audio link: www.newstalk1430.com/ Indianapolis Media Notes for Wednesday: TODAY: The Indians and Norfolk Tides continue a four-game series at Victory Field. This is the Tides first visit to Indy since July 13 and 14 of last season. The teams met for four games at Harbor Park in early May. The teams split the series. The Tribe lost the last game 7-6 in 11 innings. Norfolk, which leads the IL with 127 stolen bases, has swiped 11 bases in the five head-to-head matchups. The Indians were just 2-10 against the Tides last season including an 0-6 mark at Victory Field. Prior to Tuesday's win, the Tribe's last win over Norfolk at home came on June 24, 2001. Since joining the IL in 1998, the Indians are 27-38 against the Tides. 2001 Tribe MVP Marco Scutaro is with Norfolk. After going 19-10 in June, the Indians are off to a 2-6 start in July. The team is hitting .272, but the pitching staff has a 5.97 ERA. RAIN, RAIN GO AWAY: Mother Nature has given central Indiana and the Indians all that they could handle the past few days. Since the Tribe opened this homestand on July 4, Victory Field has received 3.18 inches of rain (through midnight Tuesday). Players and fans have waited out three official delays totaling 3 hours 46 minutes. There was also an unofficial delay of about two hours Saturday before the game was postponed. ON THE MOUND: Righthander Pasqual Coco makes his team-leading 19th start today. He leads the team in with eight wins, 91,1 innings and 67 strikeouts. He is tied for third in the IL in wins. Coco won seven consecutive decisions over 12 starts from May 4 through June 28 recording a 3.84 ERA. The streak was snapped in his most-recent start, however. Coco took the loss on July 3 at Columbus when he allowed seven runs in 3.0 innings. Coco is 4-1 with a 4.15 ERA in eight starts at Victory Field this season. He is 3-3 with a 5.06 ERA in seven afternoon starts. Coco, who had not batted prior to this season, is 3-for-12 at the plate and has a three-game hitting streak. ON THE LEADER BOARD: Pasqual Coco is tied for third in the IL with eight wins. Keith Luuloa is third in the circuit with a .512 slugging percentage. Roberto Giron ranks fourth with 14 saves. Bill Hall is fifth with 50 runs scored. David Manning ranks third with 44 bases on balls. UPCOMING PROBABLES: Thursday vs. Norfolk - RHP Jason Scobie (1-2, 4.95) vs. LHP Nate Teut (1-3, 3.12) Friday vs. Norfolk - RHP Jason Middlebrook (4-6, 4.66) vs. LHP Derek Lee (0-1, 7.20)

  12. The newest Brewer farmhand is RHP Nick Bates, a 23-tear-old who made his Arizona Brewer debut Tuesday. Bates completed his Michigan State career in 2002, with a very nice senior year (9-3, 2.97 ERA, 7 CG, 30 BB and 100 K in 88 IP), and was Kansas City's 22nd round selection in the 2002 June draft, but apparently never signed with the Royals. Earlier this year, Bates was pitching in relief in the independent Frontier League with Evansville. He was given his release there on June 20th, and signed with the Brewers shortly after that. RHP Nick Bates 2003 numbers with Evansville: www.baseballamerica.com/c...ates%2C+ni Bates' Profile Page at Michigan State (prior to senior year): msuspartans.ocsn.com/spor...ick00.html Nice Detailed Feature Article on Bates from Spring 2002: www.statenews.com/article.phtml?pk=9934 Not sure what the circumstances were that kept the Royals from coming to an agreement with Bates, but he's Brewer property now...
  13. Catcher Simon Guhring of the Arizona Rookie Brewers was placed on the Temporary Inactive list. Pretty interesting, actually... Guhring was given permission to play for the German National Team in an attempt to qualify for the Olympics. He will be gone approximately three weeks. Nice of the Brewers to allow him to compete for a spot in the Olympics. Guhring is one of only two German players in organized affiliated ball right now. The Brewers released their other "German import" (sorry, couldn't resist http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif ) this spring, 3B Mitch Franke. This article details Mike Piazza's trip to Germany this offseason and mentions Guhring... mlb.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/ml...&fext=.jsp Guhring is holding his own thus far in limited Arizona action this year and last, hitting .237 with a relatively low strikeout total. Neat story, if nothing else... As always, our thanks to the Brewers for responding to our requests about the status of specific players.

  15. Cedar Rapids (Angels) 4, Beloit 2 Khalid Ballouli did not start -- came in for Calvin Carpenter; Tony Gwynn in the # 3 spot -- had been hitting 2nd... River Bandits' Site Game Summary: Rafael Rodriguez pitched seven innings of four-hit ball and Jared Abruzzo lashed a two-run double to lead the Cedar Rapids Kernels past the Beloit Snappers, 4-2, Tuesday night before a paid crowd of 1,639 at Veterans Memorial Stadium. The win was the second in as many nights against Beloit for the Kernels, who evened their second-half record at 10-10. Beloit also is 10-10. Rodriguez (5-8), who has won two straight after losing six in a row, gave up only one run, walked one and struck out seven. The Kernels jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning against Snapper starter Calvin Carpenter. Abruzzo lined a one-out, two-run double and scored one out later when Greg Porter flared a single to right. Beloit scratched across a run in the third inning. Kennard Bibbs reached on a fielder's choice, stole second and scored on Callix Crabbe's RBI single. Quan Cosby's RBI single in the fourth inning scored Porter, who had reached on a single, and increased the Kernels' lead to 4-1. Beloit had a big inning going in the eighth inning. Bibbs singled leading off the inning and went to third on Crabbe's double. Tony Gwynn grounded out to first, scoring Bibbs and moving Crabbe to third. Prince Fielder then hit a towering fly ball to medium right. Kernels right fielder Jason Sugden caught the ball and threw a strike to the plate to cut down Crabbe trying to score and end the inning. 16. Inland Empire (Mariners) 4, High Desert 3 Probably the toughest loss of the year, considering how badly the Mavs could've used this win... High Desert Site Game Summary: Tough Loss Drops Mavs AgainSAN BERNARDINO, CA - In the ultimate of heartbreaking games, the High Desert Mavericks equaled their longest losing streak of the season, dropping their eighth straight game for the second time this year on Tuesday night. The Inland Empire 66ers scored three times in the bottom of the ninth to pull out a 4-3 victory over the Mavs at Arrowhead Credit Union Park in San Bernardino. Mavs closer Bobby Bystrowski (0-3), who hadn't had an opportunity to earn a save in over a month, blew just his second save chance this year in allowing the three ninth-inning runs. Clinging to a 3-1 lead, Bystrowski struck out the first man in the ninth before walking former Mav, Cristian Guerrero. Pinch hitter Chris Collins doubled to right field to chase home Guerrero and make the score 3-2. Pinch runner Ismael Castro advanced to third one pitch later on a passed ball by catcher Joel Alvarado. Without throwing another pitch, the game would be tied at 3-3, as Bystrowski, attempting to work from the windup, was called for a balk by base umpire Brandon Leopoldus. Dustin DeLucchi hit a ground-rule double to center field and would score two batters later, as Greg Jacobs knocked in the winning run with a single to right field. High Desert jumped on top early, as Jason Belcher led off the game with his fifth homer of the year. The lead-off home run is the first of the year for the Mavericks. After Inland Empire tied the game in the bottom of the first on a John Castellano RBI double, the Mavs took the lead in the fourth. Johnny Raburn led off the inning with single. After advancing to second on a bunt by Chris Morris, Raburn scored on a Jeremy Frost RBI single to make it 2-1. The Mavs made it 3-1 in the sixth, as Morris knocked in Scott Candelaria, who doubled to open the frame. The loss overshadowed a great performance from Mavs starter Danny Kolb, who went six innings, while allowing just one run. Justin Gordon set up the dramatic ninth inning with two scoreless innings of relief out of the High Desert bullpen. Inland Empire's Jared Thomas (5-3) earned the win by recording four outs in relief. High Desert tries to avoid a nine-game skid by sending Chad Petty (0-4) to the mound on Wednesday night in San Bernardino. The 66ers will counter with Ryan Ketchner (9-3) at 7:05 (9:05 Central). 17. Indianapolis 6, Norfolk (Mets) 3 Timing of rain delays shorten Wes Obermueller's debut... Indy Site Game Summary: INDIANAPOLIS -- The Indianapolis Indians survived over two hours of rain delays to pull out a 6-3 come-from behind victory over the Norfolk Tides Tuesday night at Victory Field. The start of the game was delayed 17 minutes due to rain, and after Norfolk took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, it was delayed another one hour forty-nine minutes before the Tribe even came to bat. After going down in order through the first three innings, the Tribe (40-50) took the lead for good with four runs in the fourth. Pete Zoccolillo's two-out double drove in two runs to put the Indians ahead 2-1. Cody McKay followed with an RBI double, and Wilton Veras drove in a run with a single as the Indians chased Tides starter Jake Joseph (4-3). Veras doubled in an insurance run in the sixth, and Jim Rushford added an RBI hit in the seventh as the Indians defeated Norfolk at home for the first time since June 24, 2001. Ben Ford (2-3) earned the win for the Indians. Ford entered the game in the third inning and allowed just one run over four innings. Norfolk (45-45) took a 1-0 lead without getting a hit. Esix Snead drew a leadoff walk before proceeding to steal second, third and home. Snead leads the International League with 36 thefts. The run came off Tribe starter Wes Obermueller who was making his Indians debut after coming over from the Kansas City organization in a July 2 trade. The series continues Wednesday afternoon with a 2 p.m. Business Day Special. 23. Indianapolis Media Notes for Tuesday: TONIGHT: The Indians welcome the Norfolk Tides to Victory Field for the first time in nearly a year. The Tides last visit to Indy was July 13 and 14 of last season. The teams met for four games at Harbor Park in early May. The teams split the series. The Tribe lost the last game 7-6 in 11 innings. Norfolk, which leads the IL with 124 stolen bases, swiped eight bases in the series. The Indians were just 2-10 against the Tides last season including an 0-6 mark at Victory Field. The Tribe's last win over Norfolk at home came on June 24, 2001. Since joining the IL in 1998, the Indians are 26-38 against the Tides. 2001 Tribe MVP Marco Scutaro is with Norfolk. After going 19-10 in June, the Indians are off to a 1-6 start in July. The team is hitting .264, but the pitching staff has a 6.44 ERA. YESTERDAY: Louisville beat the Tribe 6-5 to take the series three games to one. Ruben Mateo and Brandon Larson broke a 4-4 tie with back-to-back home runs leading off the eighth inning. The Indians, who had trailed 4-0 at one point, tied the game with four runs in the sixth. Bill Hall doubled home two runs, while Jim Rushford hit a two-run homer. The difference in the game was a disputed double by Tribe center fielder Jason Conti. The Indians thought the ball cleared the fence on the fly for a solo homer in the third inning, but umpire Don Goller ruled it a ground rule double. HOMESTAND HIGHLIGHTS: Hall of Fame pitcher Jim Palmer will be at Victory Field tonight. He will sign autographs from 6-6:30. Wednesday is a 2 pm Business Day Special. Thursday is Autographed Ball Night. The first 4,000 fans will receive an Indians autographed baseball. Friday is the seventh anniversary of the opening of Victory Field. The first 4,000 fans will receive a Victory Field cap. Over 300 Boy Scouts will camp out at the ballpark after the game. Saturday's fireworks have been rescheduled to follow Friday's game. ON THE MOUND: Righthander Wes Obermueller makes his Indians debut tonight. He was acquired from Kansas City on July 2 in the deal that sent RHP Curtis Leskanic to the Royals. Obermueller made 17 starts with Triple-A Omaha and led the PCL with 10 wins. He was selected to the PCL All-Star team. Obermueller went 7-2 over his last 11 starts since May 8. TOP OF THE ORDER: Bill Hall was moved into the lead-off spot in the lineup June 7 and has gone 30-for-93 (.323) with 20 runs scored, 10 doubles, two home runs, eight walks and four stolen bases in 23 games since. Hall has hit safely in 30 of his last 36 games. In that period, he's batting .306 (46-for-150). Hall had back-to-back eight-game hitting streaks in June (June 7-16 and 18-26). HOT AT THE PLATE: Over the last 47 games Jim Rushford is hitting .352 (62-for-176). He has five home runs in the last 11 games. Steve Scarborough has swung a hot bat lately too.
