It always strikes me as funny that the ESPN / USA TODAY box score (same feed) have always spelled J.J.'s name in all caps every single time out -- like they were trying to tell us something http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif -

It's an automatic. If Mark McCarter is writing the game story down in Huntsville, you get wit, plenty of quotes, and insights you wouldn't have known otherwise. Could some of you baseball experts help me out - I just returned from Indianapolis and was surprised to see that a player coaches 1st base and Cecil Cooper stays in the dugout. Maybe that's the way all AAA teams work? Could this affect the base-running execution? This is quite common in the minors, I believe. Injured players, bench players, etc., man the first base bag, while either the manager or hitting coach normally coaches third base. It's usually at the discretion of the manager whether he wants to remain in the dugout or not. -

Yes, we'll all be distracted from Today's Menu by all the draft activity, but I'm sure you'll squeeze in some of the audio indicated here: All times Central; pitchers subject to change; pre-game audio available approx. 15 minutes prior to game time listed.... INDIANAPOLIS: RHP Pascual Coco at Toledo (Tigers), 6:00 PM HUNTSVILLE: You know you want to check out Huntsville for at least a full hour before the draft fun kicks in. RHP Pedro Liriano is home vs. Mobile (Padres), game time at 12:05. We'll even make it easy for you today and include the link you've bookmarked here -- check out the pre-game and fill us in! espn1450.com/ HIGH DESERT: So once Matt Kinney dominates the hapless Metropolitans tonight, what are you going to be listening to while staying up late reviewing all the Brewerfan.net draft coverage? I'm guessing it will be RHP Chris Saenz at Lancaster (Diamondbacks), 10:15 PM www.hdmavs.com/listen_live.htm BELOIT: If rotation form holds, it'll be RHP Dennis Sarfate vs. Kane County (A's) at home, 7:00 PM; Cougars' audio is available via their site: www.kccougars.com/ Remember, the Cougars' audio is archived shortly after the game as well, so you can listen to Sarfate's effort on "tape delay". I heartily admit that the audio does lack for interest when provided by the opponent -- simply not enough between-pitch perspective on the Snappers.

Huntsville 11, Mobile (Padres) 3 You really have to wonder how much time will pass after a first half division crown is clinched before LHP Luis Martinez will be bumped to AAA Indy. This is his second option year, after all.... Huntsville Site Game Summary: www.huntsvillestars.com/n...?newsid=87 David Weiser's Huntsville Update: BYE, BYE MONDAY BLUESA mid-afternoon front dumped some rain on the city, cooling off the game-time temperature to an unseasonable 67°. The threat of more rain and the fact that it was Monday, held the smallish, but atypically noisy crowd to just over 1,000....... All of the noise came from a section in the upper deck, occupied by about a half-dozen party people on the third base side, and while it doesn't sound like they could generate any enthusiasm, they were a joy to listen to. It was so loud the crowd mike had to be turned down for the radio broadcast.......... With winds blowing out toward left field near 15 mph, it felt more like early April than early June........ We haven't had what I would call a really hot, steamy day at the ballpark this year --- a few 80° days, but not one scorcher, and in truth, the ballpark experience has been more indicative of a summer night in Minneapolis than anything else. Be that as it may, the weather may have been cool, but it suited the Stars and Luis Martinez........ Looie's complete game victory was the first since September 1, 2000, thrown by Derek Lee, ironically, a 10-0 shutout over Mobile......... At one point in this game, Luis had a 10-0 lead........ The last complete game was actually a 3-1 loss Dave Pember took at Jacksonville last year on July 23 and the last time a Huntsville starter went nine innings was the last day of the last season, when Paul Stewart gave way in the 10th to Mike Penney in a 1-0 loss to Birmingham. With the wind blowing out to left, I was expecting to see more home runs than I saw tonight, but Richard Paz connected to cap a 5-run 4th inning, a high, arcing blast that landed beyond the middle fence just inside the 345-ft. foul marker. The Stars are now 20-4 when they hit a home run....... Brandon Gemoll capped a 3-run first inning with a 2-run single. The Stars played Kremblasball in the 2nd when Chris Barnwell went station-to-station, scoring as the result of a single to left-center, a stolen base, a well-executed sac bunt by Martinez, and a sac fly by Ryan Knox........ J.J. Hardy did virtually the same thing in the 3rd. After reaching on an error by Rico Washington, he took second on a wild pitch, third on a ground ball, and scored on Gemoll's opposite-field fly ball. Luis broke the Stars' 0-7 Monday jinx, losing two games on a Monday himself, by pitching five no-hit innings for the 2nd time this season....... Although it looks good on paper, once again he did not look particularly dominating. Luis did not throw many first pitch strikes and was working behind on the count a lot. Mobile hitters helped him out by swinging freely at his fast ball, which was all over the place. He pitched inside the plate effectively, but not until the 4th inning, did he really start to look good, and you knew with the big lead the Stars had by this time, that he might pull off a complete game......... The no-hitter was gone with Looie's 61st pitch in the 6th inning to reliever Chris Rojas, who pulled a single inside the first base bag past Gemoll......... The infield defense was stellar tonight, paced by Barnwell, playing the hot corner for only the 3rd time this season........ Of the three double plays pulled off by the Stars tonight, two were started by Barney and in the 7th, he turned in the play of the day, diving to spear a low liner inside the baseline. The hot bats belonged to two players who are on a torrid pace....... Paz had his first 3-hit game of the year and is hitting .343 (12-for-35) over his last 10 games, but Dave Krynzel is something else....... One scout recently upgraded Dave based on what he has seen, his reckless basestealing attempts notwithstanding. Krinkles also had a 3-hit game and is 7-for-10 in the series and is hitting .462 (18-for-39 ) over his last 11 games. Against Mobile this year, he's hitting .428 (11-for-26)........ But he's also on a torrid pace to break the club record for being caught stealing the most times in a season. The record of 20 has stood since 1985. Krynzel has 16 this season....... His total of 22 going back to last year put him 7th on the all-time list, past Gary Jones (Stars 1986, 89)........ Krynzel has stolen a league-leading 21 bases. The series wraps up tomorrow with Pedro Liriano (4-5, 2.91) going up against Steve Watkins (3-3, 4.73)......... Martinez lowered his ERA to 1.84, now 2nd best in the Southern League to since-departed Tennessee pitcher Danny Haren, who is 0-1 with a 4.98 ERA for the Class AAA-Memphis (PCL) Redbirds. Huntsville Box Score: David Krynzel now sixth in batting average in the Southern League at .328... Indianapolis Media Notes for Monday's Matinee: TODAY: The Indians finish off an eight-game homestand with the final game of the season against the Ottawa Lynx. The Indians have guaranteed themselves a split of the season series, but a win today would give the Tribe the advantage in the season series for the first time since 1999 when the Indians won six of the eight meetings. Overall, the Indians are 23-22 against Ottawa since joining the IL in 1998. A win today would also allow the Indians to finish with a .500 mark on the homestand. The Indians have had a winning mark on one of three homestands this season. They went 4-1 against Durham and Charlotte on the first homestand of the season. The Indians look for their third straight win today. The Indians have not won three straight since a four-game winning streak April 9-12. The Indians finished May with an 11-18 record. Last year, the squad was 12-18 in May. The Indians went 15-13 in June of 2002. YESTERDAY: The Indians beat Ottawa 4-1. Five Indians pitchers held Ottawa to seven hits. Mark Budzinski went 3-for-5 with two runs scored. Pete Zoccolillo and Jim Rushford each went 2-for-4 with an RBI. ON THE MOUND: Righthander David Manning takes the hill for the 14th time in 2003. It will be his eighth start since moving into the starting rotation on April 23. Manning ranks sixth in the IL with a 2.83 ERA. This will be Manning's second start against Ottawa. He faced the Lynx on May 23 and tossed five shutout innings to earn the win. Manning allowed three hits and three walks while striking out five. Manning is coming off a rough start against Rochester on Thursday, and will be pitching on three days rest instead of four. The Red Wings put together a four-run fourth inning against Manning and scored six runs overall in 4.2 innings to send Manning to his second loss of the season. BULLPEN COMES THROUGH: With a starting rotation depleted due to injury and a doubleheader this week, the Tribe's bullpen has answered the call. The relief corps has allowed just one run over the last 13 innings. OFF AND RUNNING: The Indians have swiped five bases over the last three games. Jim Rushford, who did not steal a base in 117 games with the Tribe last year, has swiped two. ZOCK IT TO 'EM: Pete Zoccolillo has a six-game hitting streak and has hit safely in eight of his last nine games (.345, 10-for-29). He has driven in at least one run in each of his last six games (9 total) and is tied for the team lead with 25 RBI for the season. ATTENDANCE AVERAGE TOPS 6,000: The Indians drew 138,104 fans in 23 openings in April and May. That averages out to 6,005 fans per game. Last year the Indians averaged 5,657 fans in the first two months of the season. By the end of the year, the average attendance climbed by nearly 2,400 to 8,056 in 2002. UPCOMING PROBABLES: Tuesday at Toledo - RHP Pasqual Coco (4-4, 5.26) vs. LHP Nate Robertson (3-2, 3.84) Wednesday at Toledo - RHP Dave Burba (2-6, 4.73) & TBA vs. RHP Seth Greisinger (4-4, 5.08) & RHP Tyler Walker (2-3, 3.54) Thursday vs. Toledo - LHP Andy Van Hekken (3-6, 6.41) vs. LHP Travis Miller (2-1, 4.91) Friday vs. Toledo - RHP Shane Loux (today) vs. TBA -

MassBrew replied to MassBrew's topic in Brewers Minor League Talk
David Weiser's Huntsville Update: DOG DAY AFTERNOONThe dog days of summer arrived at Joe Davis Stadium........ I know it's not August, but it was really a dog day afternoon as the Stars invited dog owners with their pooches to the ballpark, today, as a promotion. Before the game, the more well-behaved and trained ones exhibited their athletic (?) skills jumping over doggie-sized hurdles in competition with other dogs. The more passive pooches got to wait it out under the picnic tent in right field or the stands before they could parade along the warning track and down the left field line to the exits after the game......... It would be a long wait, for today's regularly scheduled game was preceded by the completion of a game that was rained out in Mobile --- the last game of a four-game series there. Mobile and Huntsville were locked in a scoreless game going into the top of the 7th on April 25. A pitching duel between Bay Bears' righty Brad Baker and lefty Derek Lee, making his third straight quality start. The General had allowed just three hits. Baker held the Stars to just one........ Both were engaged in the pitching duel of the season. Mobile had advanced just two runners into scoring position and the Stars were never able to push a runner past first....... Before the rains came, Corey Hart had made the play of the game, robbing Humberto Quintero of an extra base hit that would have ended the game right there in Mobile. Ben Johnson had doubled into the right field corner and was standing on second when Quintero ripped a hard two-hop shot down the third base line. Hart made a spectacular dive for the ball and was able to stop it. Often that winds up as an infield single, but Hart leapt to his feet and gunned down Quintero to preserve the scoreless tie......... When the Stars came up in the top of the 7th, Hart drew a walk, but Quintero exacted some sort of revenge by throwing him out trying to steal second......... Mother Nature got in the last word, as Brandon Gemoll came up to the plate. The wait took more than a month, but this game took one pitch to decide........ Gemoll pulled Chris Rojas's first pitch over the first wall in right field, over the Burger King sign, for a home run........ Although Mobile was able to get a pair of runners on in the 8th inning, the game ended 1-0 in Huntsville's favor. Derek Lee goes in the books with his team-leading 7th victory of the season, giving up 3 hits in 6 innings and striking out 6....... Brad Baker, who gave up just one hit in 6 innings, before Chris Oxspring came on in relief, goes away with nothing, as Anne Robinson might say........ With that win, Derek is in a three-way tie with Neal Cotts and Sean Fesh for the Southern League lead for victories....... Officially it became Gemoll's first home run of the season (he has seven overall), and it gives Dave Krynzel credit for a 12-game hit streak, his longest of the season. The Stars made it a sweep, and gained a game-and-a-half over Birmingham, who lost their third straight game to the Diamond Jaxx, 5-2........ In an attempt to break Noochie Varner out a slump of such horrid proportions (0-for-13 with 8 Ks and not a ball hit out of the infield), manager Frank Kremblas made him only the 4th leadoff hitter he's used all year (Chris Cosbey 3x, Krynzel 3x, Ryan Knox 46x)........ All for naught. Varner struck out in the 1st on an 0-2 pitch and grounded to third three times. In the 5th, Bobby Scales ran in, but dropped his grounder and Varner reached first for the very first time since he joined the Stars........ The Stars can afford his struggles, though. They've won 7 of their last 10 following a 5-game losing streak........Krynzel would get things going with a double to center, following Varner's strikeout, scoring on J.J. Hardy's single to right. Krinkles has more triples than doubles this season, quite an anomaly......... Mobile answered back in the top of the 2nd. After a double to the left field wall by Jon Knott, Matt Parker struck out the next two batters, but walked Yamid Haad and Vince Faison to load the bases. Pitcher Cory Stewart then poked a single to right, scoring Knott to tie the game. Parker had an easy time in the 3rd and 5th innings, retiring the side in order, but in the 4th, threw 28 pitches, as he worked out of a bases-loaded, one out situation. In all, he threw 84 pitches, the most he's thrown this season, 52 for strikes (61.9%)........ Krynzel made two nice catches in the early innings, but his first was the stuff I only see in the majors........ On a 1-0 pitch, Jake Gautreau hit a ball that caught the jet stream out to straighaway center. Krynzel raced back to the 405 marker and just to the right, leaped with his glove over the wall and made the catch to rob Gautreau of a home run. In the third, he made a shoestring catch rushing into shallow left center to take away a leadoff hit from Todd Donovan, tame in comparison. The Stars put on a carousel act in the 5th inning, when they put together a season-high six hits in the inning, sending 11 men to the plate........ Mobile starter Cory Stewart was not able to retire a batter until he had allowed seven straight hitters to reach safely........ Ryan Gripp's single to center was followed by a single, a walk, and two more singles, the second on a squeeze play by Chris Barnwell. After Barnwell fouled off a first-pitch squeeze attempt, this time he got one down right in front of the plate. Stewart, rushing in, was unable to get a handle on the ball, and Kade Johnson crossed the plate. Barney was on, given credit with a hit......... Varner reached on the aforementioned error at third base and Krynzel singled to right before Hardy hit a high pop on the infield grass to Bobby Scales. Hart would single in Barnwell to cap the 5-run inning, giving the Stars a 6-2 lead, and essentially ending the day for Mobile........ Ken Ray gave up a home run to left to Jon Knott and, tiring, left the bases loaded in the 8th. The Stars, now 31-23 and 3½ games in the lead coming around the final turn, send Luis Martinez (4-3, 2.10) to try and end the Monday jinx......... The Stars are 0-7 on Mondays. Two of Looie's losses were on Monday. Typical Looies losses, too. Six runs given up in 12 innings, but only two earned.......The Bay Bears send Roger Daego (4-2, 3.77), who earlier on May 9, was promoted to San Diego.......... The Stars were going to show off their road unis to the fans, since they were officially the "away" team in the suspended game, but seven pairs of pants needed extensive repair after the road trip to Birmingham and it's not surprising given the aggressive nature of this team on the basepaths. The Stars lead the league in stolen bases and attempts ---- by a long margin. -

San Jose (Giants) 3, High Desert 2 A possible explanation for 3B Froilan Villanueva's difficulties described below... High Desert Site Game Summary: SAN JOSE, CA ? The Mavs dropped their third straight game on their current six-game Northern road trip, losing to the San Jose Giants by a score of 3-2 on Sunday afternoon at San Jose Municipal Stadium. The Giants scored one in the seventh and two in the eighth as the Mavs dropped to just 1-4 on the current nine-game road trip that features one more in San Jose and three in Lancaster beginning Tuesday. The Mavs are now 12 games under .500 for the first time this year, at 22-34. Danny Kolb pitched six shutout innings, but was chased in the seventh as the first two Giants hitters reached safely. David Nolasco came out of the bullpen and allowed a one-out double to Justin Knoedler. With the Mavs leading 2-1, Nolasco retired the next two hitters, leaving the tying run at third and the go-ahead run at second. In the eighth, the Giants completed the comeback scoring a pair of unearned runs. Justin Backsmeyer (1-3) began the inning by getting Daniel Ortmeier to ground out. Juilian Benavidez then reached on an error by Froilan Villanueva, who was making his first appearance since suffering an injury on Wednesday and undergoing a root canal on Thursday. Bryan Carter then tripled home Benavidez to tie the game at 2-2. After a walk to Zach Strong, Bobby Bystrowski was called upon to get the final two outs of the inning with runners at first and third. Dan Trumble took strike three looking for the second out, but Knoedler drove in his second run in as many innings, with a ground ball off Villanueva's glove that was ruled an infield single. The Mavs threatened in the ninth, but Villanueva's two-out single went for not, as James Garcia earned his fifth save by striking out Brian Foster looking to end it. The Mavs took a 2-0 lead with two in the third, as Chris Morris doubled home Todd West, who picked up a one-out infield single. Mark Ernster then picked up his 24th RBI of the year with a sac fly, knocking in Johnny Raburn who also singled. Giants releiver Brian Burres picked up the win by tossing a scoreless eighth inning. Mavs starter Danny Kolb was fantastic, allowing just one run on five hits in six innings. Kolb struck out seven and walked just two. Jason Belcher and Raburn each had two hits for High Desert. The Mavs try to end their three-game skid by sending Jeff Robinson (1-0) to the hill on Monday afternoon against San Jose's Ryan Hannaman (3-2). Game time on Monday is 12:45. The Mavs then travel to Lancaster for three straight before finally opening up a three-game series against Lake Elsinore at home this coming Friday, June 6th. Wow, DHonks, you must have had a heck of a notepad going there. I'm sure the players will look at your "report" as objective, but of course, it only points to one game, so everything is magnified vs. a 140-game season. Those who had a tough day or a tough couple of plays will probably be a bit uneasy with your assessments but then again, these are our first on-site accounts of a High Desert game, so it's very much appreciated. Great job pointing out the positive, negative, and in-between. Have another great day Monday out in San Jose! -

Indy Site Game Summary: INDIANAPOLIS - Five Indianapolis Indians pitchers combined to hold the Ottawa Lynx (29-27) to one run on seven hits as the Tribe won 4-1 at Victory Field on Sunday afternoon. Shane Nance earned his first win in an Indianapolis uniform this season, and Jim Rushford picked up his first RBI for the Tribe in 2003 as well. The Tribe (20-34) scored runs in the second, third, and fourth innings to give a 4-0 advantage for starter Mike Buddie. Pitching in a spot start, Buddie threw 3.0 innings allowing only one hit before turning the ball over to Ben Ford to begin the fourth inning. Ford pitched 3.0 innings in his Tribe debut giving up five hits and one run on an RBI single by Steve Lomasney in the sixth. Ford also struck out three Lynx batters. After John Foster struck out two of the three batters he faced in a three-up-three-down seventh inning, Nance entered the game to open the eighth inning and faced four batters in his 1.1 innings of work striking out two to earn the win. Mark Budzinski, Rushford, and Pete Zoccolillo each had multiple-hit games for the Indians as Budzinski (3-for-5) scored twice including once on an RBI single by Zoccolillo in the third. Zoccolillo and Rushford each went 2-for-4 with an RBI apiece. Zoccolillo's lead-off triple off the wall in right field in the second got the Indians offense going and extended his hitting streak to six games. He also has driven in a run in each of those six games. The Tribe will complete the four-game series and eight-game homestand on Monday afternoon when they play the Lynx for a Business Day Special at 2 p.m. David Manning (3-2, 2.83) will face Rafael Pina (0-2, 5.11). The Indians travel to Toledo to play three games in three days against the Mud Hens starting on Tuesday before both teams return to Indianapolis for a two-game series at Victory Field on Thursday and Friday. -
