  4. Toledo (Tigers) 4, Indianapolis 0 Indy Site Game Summary: INDIANAPOLIS -- The recently hot-hitting Indianapolis Indians offense cooled off on Friday night at the hands of a steady pitching performance from the Toledo Mud Hens (28-30), as the Mud Hens shutout the Tribe 4-0 at Victory Field. Chris Mears and a trio of Mud Hens relievers held the Indians to only three hits, and the Tribe constantly shot themselves in the foot by hitting into a season-high four double-plays. Mears (2-1) pitched five solid innings allowing only one hit, a one-out single to Keith Luuloa in the fifth inning, and watched as the Toledo offense plated three of its four runs with two outs. Brant Ust got the Mud Hens offense on the board in the top of the second inning with an RBI single off of Indians starter Ben Ford. Toledo touched Ford (0-1) for three runs on seven hits in 5.0 innings, although Ford struck out seven batters in his first start of the season for the Tribe. Cody Ross returned from a league suspension by blasting a solo home run, his seventh of the year, off of Ford with two outs in the fifth inning. Matt Anderson, Eric Eckenstahler, and Fernando Rodney pitched the final four innings allowing only two hits while striking out five Indians batters. Rodney faced only three batters in the ninth inning, striking out all three. The Indians (23-36) travel to Syracuse on Saturday to open a four-game series with the SkyChiefs. David Manning (3-3, 3.3http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/glasses.gif , the Tribe's Player of the Month for May, with face Mike Smith (4-2, 4.53) in the series opener. 5. Brian Rauch went 10-2 for the University of North Florida this spring: www.unf.edu/sports/baseba...stats.html
  6. That article mentioned two free agent signings of non-drafted players: The Brewers also signed a pair of non-drafted free agents. Right-handers Forrest Martin and Brian Rauch were assigned to the Arizona League. Guessing that Martin was a 5th year senior; looks like the Mariners signed him in May, but something must have happened there. Here's that press release: May 8, 2003 Southwestern's Martin signs with Mariners Senior pitcher Forrest Martin of Southwestern University signed a contract with the Seattle Mariners on Wednesday, May 8. He reports to Phoenix, Ariz., immediately after graduation for extended Spring Training. After the draft in June, the team will assign rookies to their lower level teams. Martin was a three-time All-SCAC performer, including his freshmen year when he was named the league's Pitcher-of-the-Year, and his sophomore season when he was named a DIII All-American. The last Pirate to sign a professional contract was Matt Gelotti '00. Matt Gelotti was a Brewer signing (no longer in the system). Injured High Desert LHP Pete Smart was an example of another 5th year senior sign. squarepusher, picture here: www.scac-online.org/baseball/
  7. FIRST FROM THIS GROUP SIGNED: TO HELENA: 32nd rounder Will Lewis - 2B - TCU - TX Good defensive 2B that also has a little bit of pop in his bat. Is a smart overall baseball player that has average tools across the board. If his power continues to develop he could be an above average 2B offensively with strong defense.
  8. TWO MORE SIGNED FROM THESE ROUNDS... Both to Helena... 27th rounder Dan McKenna - RHP - Rutgers - Camden - NJ Perfect pitcher's build at 6'4" 205. Served as Rutgers-Camden's closer this past season, and his fastball has been clocked in the mid-90s. With his size & stuff, he could be a steal as a 27th rounder if he develops more consistency & better secondary offerings. 30th rounder Robby Deevers - OF - U of Texas - Arlington - TX Strongly built OF prospect with average tools across the board except for one: A very strong arm. Displays good speed in the OF and has a little bit of pop at the plate. Needs to hit for a better average and exhibit a better eye at the plate overall.
  9. SIGNED TWO MORE WITHIN THESE ROUNDS: Corporan to Arizona; Slack to Helena... 12th rounder Carlos Corporan - 1B - Lake City CC - PR Versatile switch-hitter that played SS in high school, was drafted as a 1B by the Angels in 2001, and played most of this season behind the plate. While technically drafted as a first baseman, the Brewers likely intend to keep Corporan behind the plate to take advantage of his potential. He was converted into a catcher in the fall of 2002, so he is going to need a lot of work. However, he has all of the tools to succeed defensively, with a strong arm, good footwork & soft hands. Shows nice power from both sides of the plate, as the ball jumps off of his bat. Possibly his best attribute is that he carries a strong desire to play the game with great enthusiasm. He's an extremely hard worker that has done a good job putting on muscle while at Lake City CC to get bigger & stronger while also learning a new & more demanding defensive position. Brother of Yankees' 3B prospect Elvis. 20th rounder Nicholas Slack - RHP - Lake City CC - FL Former walk-on that made the team as a freshman as a starting pitcher. Served as his team's closer this year as his fastball jumped from the mid-80s to the low-90s. Had 11 saves this season while striking out 54 & walking only 7 in 41.1 innings pitched. Does a good job throwing strikes as exhibited by his low walk total, and can also throw a curveball, slider, changeup & splitter. Fiery, competitive ballplayer that wants the ball at all times, and seems to get better the more work he gets. A player on the rise with a strong & durable frame & arm.
  10. SIGNED: To Arizona... 4th rounder Charlie Fermaint - CF - Jose S. Alegria HS - PR Strong, multi-tooled outfield prospect with a nice, intriguing collection of pure physical tools. Out of a fine collection of Puerto Rican outfield prospects, Fermaint ranks as the best pure hitter. Also is pretty fast, and has promising power potential as he continues to add strength with maturity. #6 Puerto Rican draft prospect according to Baseball America.
  11. Huntsville Times Game Story: Crank up the stereo... www.al.com/stars/huntsvil...096630.xml OK, so I'm tugging on my brand new Huntsville red road cap -- now where are those plane tickets? Squarepusher and others will provide links and updates over the weekend -- you might see me with some stuff later tonight, but otherwise, you'll be in good hands here and see you in Milwaukee!
  12. Joe Lawrence's Power 50 spot (# 37) is officially up for grabs.
  13. Thanks, Mike! Here's the Indy Press Release: www.indyindians.com/press..._0603.html
  14. Another dip into the independent leagues, for Indianapolis. With the previous signing of Doug Jennings, it seems it's time for two members of the Tribe to be concerned about their status within the organization, as room needs to be made. Camden, N.J. ? Camden Riversharks (Atlantic League) catcher Alex Delgado has been signed by the Milwaukee Brewers General Manager John Brandt announced today. Delgado will be assigned to Triple-A Indianapolis, where he will join the team immediately. This will be Delgado?s second stint at Triple-A this season after starting the year at Memphis where he batted .428 in five games for the Red Birds. Upon his release from Memphis, Delgado joined the Riversharks, where he was batting a team-best .333 upon his departure. In 22 games this season with Camden, Delgado collected 23 hits, scored seven runs, ripped six extra base hits and drove in 10 RBI. Delgado was also magnificent behind the plate as he committed just one error and threw out 33 percent of would be base stealers. ?This is what the Atlantic League is all about, moving players back into organized baseball,? General Manager John Brandt said. ?We wish Alex all the best in the Brewers organization and hope to see him back in the Big Leagues.? Delgado, 32 years old, had his only stint in the majors with the Boston Red Sox briefly back in 1996. I believe squarepusher will have a Player Index and career stats page in place for us by later today. - MB

  16. Two more added to the Helena roster: Comments from Brewerfan.net's Draft Coverage... 22nd round. Terry Trofholz - OF - TCU - TX Good overall hitter with a career. 381 batting average at TCU. Had a great junior campaign that made him a 2nd team All-American. Dipped a bit this spring as a senior, batting .328 with a .407 on-base percentage and a .446 slugging percentage in 192 at bats. Has pretty good speed, and is considered a pretty good defensive outfielder as well. Doesn't have much power, and is basically a gap to gap hitter. 24th round. Drew Anderson - OF - Nebraska - NE Anderson has a sweet lefty stroke and is rather accomplished as a hitter. Has a good idea of what he wants to do at the plate, and always has hit better with wood bats. Continues to get better while adding strength, which should allow him to add more over the fence power. Shows a good eye at the plate, and doesn't get fooled very often. He doesn't have many other promising tools other than his hitting prowess, similar to Mungle, so he probably is restricted to a corner OF spot, DH or 1B. #8 prospect in the Alaskan League in the summer of 2002. Not a surprise that the college guys, particularly any college seniors, are the first to sign...
  17. Signed, sealed, and delivered to Helena: 16th round. Mitch Stetter - LHP - Indiana St - IN From Brewerfan.net's Draft Coverage: Nice sized lefty with pretty good stuff. Could be a sleeper pick if he has indeed fully recovered from his back injury. I'll let his coach Tom Warn do the rest of the talking: "An outstanding young man and a great talent. Throws four pitches for strikes, rarely ever gets hit. Opponents have a .198 batting average against him. Pitched in a limited number of games all in relief this past season due to back injury. Is fine now. He was freshman all-american his first year of school. 6'4" frame with potential to get even stronger weighing only 200 lbs. Has a great upside for the Brewers."

  22. From hdmavs.com: The latest move sees right-handed relief pitcher Greg Schaub officially announce his retirement from baseball. Originally drafted in 1995 as an outfielder, Schaub made the conversion to pitcher in 2001 and has been with the Mavs for the last two seasons. Schaub got off to a great start this year before soreness in his right arm landed him on the DL and eventually led to him calling it a career. I believe only Valerio de los Santos has been in the Brewers' system longer than the 26-year-old Schaub, a member of the 1995 draft class along with Geoff Jenkins, drafted in the third round, only two rounds after Geoff. We wish Greg well in his post-baseball life. Greg Schaub Brewerfan Player Profile Page: www.brewerfan.net/ViewPla...ayerId=209
  23. According to the minor league portion of the Brewers' web site (is there one? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif ), Palmisano has been placed on Helena's roster. Of course, that could change quickly in coming days or weeks....
  24. 38-year-old 1B Doug Jennings to Indianapolis: Central Islip, N.Y., June 4, 2003) ? Long Island Ducks team officials today announced that the Milwaukee Brewers have purchased the contract of first baseman Doug Jennings from the Ducks. Jennings will be assigned to the team?s AAA affiliate, the Indianapolis Indians. Jennings earned Atlantic League Player of the Month honors, as he led the league in batting average (.380), hits (33), runs scored (19) and on base percentage (.521) during May. He also led the team in doubles with 10 and tied for the team lead in RBIs with 20. ?Losing Doug is a blow to our squad,? said Ducks general manager Michael Hirsch. ?But we understand this is part of the equation and we?re happy for Doug. He certainly deserves it.? Jennings goes to Indianapolis just one hit short of 1,500 for his minor league career. In 5,051 career minor league at bats, he owns a .297 batting average, with 188 home runs and 902 runs batted in. You can listen to Jennings discuss signing with the Brewers in three very brief audio links at this link... www.liducks.com/cgi-bin/d...s.cgi?id=1 Doug Jennings Major League Numbers: www.sports-wired.com/mlb/...p?ID=13308 Not sure how this will affect the Indians' 23-man roster, currently full.
  25. Indy Media Notes for Thursday: TONIGHT: The Indians and Mud Hens come to Victory Field after two games at Fifth Third Field in Toledo. The Indians swept the two games at Toledo for their first road series win of the year. The Tribe has won three straight road contests, and four of their last five games overall. The Indians took the season series 9-7 last year, including winning six of eight at Victory Field. Since joining the IL in 1998, the Indians have won the season series every year and are 50-34 overall against the Hens. YESTERDAY: The Indians had 15 hits in a 9-4 win over the Hens. Six Indians had two hits apiece while every Indians starter had at least one hit. Keith Luuloa tripled twice and drove in three runs to lead the attack. The Indians broke a 3-3 tie by sending 10 men to the plate in the seventh and scoring four runs. Toledo committed three errors and a passed ball which led to four unearned runs in the game. ON THE MOUND: Lefthander Travis Miller makes his fourth consecutive start and his 10th appearance of the season. Miller started the season with the Reds' organization and pitched four scoreless innings for Louisville before signing with the Indians on May 11. Following two relief appearances, he was moved into the rotation on May 16. Miller is coming off his best outing of the year. Last Saturday he pitched five shutout innings against Ottawa to earn his first win with the Indians. He allowed four hits and one walk while striking out six. PLAYER OF THE MONTH: RHP David Manning will be recognized before tonight's game as the Indians Player of the Month for May. Manning led the pitching staff with 27 strikeouts and 36.2 innings pitched while tying for team honors in wins (3) and starts (6). He also posted a 2.70 ERA which was the best among Tribe starters. He will receive a special watch from Windsor Jewelers. BULLPEN COMES THROUGH: With a starting rotation depleted due to an injury and a doubleheader last week, the Tribe's bullpen has answered the call. Including a spot start by Mike Buddie Sunday, the bullpen has pitched 29.1 innings over the last six games. The relief corps has allowed just five earned runs in that period (1.53 ERA). 'KOLB' AS ICE: Opponents are hitting a frigid .191 against Tribe reliever Dan Kolb. Kolb has recorded a 1.50 ERA in 21 games allowing five earned runs in 30.0 innings. Kolb has struck out 31 batters in his last 21.1 innings (13 G). ZOCK IT TO 'EM: Pete Zoccolillo has a nine-game hitting streak and has hit safely in 11 of his last 12 games (.350, 14-for-40). He has driven in 11 runs in his last nine games and has taken the team lead with 27 RBI. From May 27 through June 2, he drove in at least one run in seven straight games (10 total). OTHER HITTING STREAKS: Two other Indians are riding personal season-high hitting streaks. Bill Hall has hit safely in seven straight games while Steve Scarborough has a six-game hitting streak. Hall is hitting .310 (9-for-29) with five runs and five RBI on his streak while Scarborough is batting .611 (11-for-18) with four runs scored on his. LUULOA'S BAT STAYS HOT: Keith Luuloa, who hit .304 with 14 RBI in May, continues to swing a hot bat. In 10 games since May 25, he is hitting .314 (11-for-35) with seven runs scored and eight RBI. He has four doubles, three triples and two home runs for a .771 slugging percentage. ON THE BOARD EARLY: The Indians have scored a team-best 39 runs in the first inning. The Tribe has plated a first-inning run in 20 games this season, but is just 9-11 in those games. The first and second innings are the only innings in which the Indians have outscored their opponents. The Indians have scored just 45 runs over the seventh, eighth and ninth innings and are 2-29 when trailing after six innings. UPCOMING PROBABLES: Friday vs. Toledo - RHP Chris Mears (1-1, 4.06) vs. RHP Ben Ford (0-0, 3.00) Saturday at Syracuse - RHP David Manning (3-3, 3.38) vs. RHP Mike Smith (4-2, 4.53) Sunday at Syracuse - RHP Pasqual Coco (5-4, 4.78) vs. RHP Jason Arnold (1-2, 4.33) Monday at Syracuse - RHP Dave Burba (3-6, 4.70) vs. RHP Doug Linton (1-7, 6.60) Tuesday at Syracuse - LHP Travis Miller (tonight) vs. RHP Evan Thomas (tonight) EYES ON THE STARS: Double-A Huntsville is in first place in the Southern League's West Division with a 32-24 record. OF Dave Krynzel leads the SL with 21 stolen bases and 7 triples. He ranks second with 39 runs scored and eighth with a .321 average. Corey Hart is second in the SL with 43 RBI and ninth with a .320 average. On the mound, Luis Martinez is second in the circuit with a 1.84 ERA and 76 strikeouts. Ben Diggins ranks sixth with a 2.36 ERA, and Mike Jones is seventh with a 2.51 ERA. Kind of funny that the Indians are now including that "EYES ON THE STARS" feature.
