  1. Indianapolis Media Notes for Monday: LHP Travis Miller your starter; I always confuse him with Trevor Miller, a LH reliever with Toronto... TONIGHT: The Indians return to Victory Field from a seven-game road trip that took them to Buffalo and Ottawa. The Tribe went 2-5 on the trip dropping all three at Buffalo before splitting a four-game set at Ottawa. The Indians won two of the last three games on the trip. The Indians scored just 13 runs and hit .178 (36-for-202) on the trip. The Tribe welcomes the Rochester Red Wings to Victory Field tonight for their only visit of the season. The Red Wings are in their first season of affiliation with the Minnesota Twins. Last year's Twins' Triple-A team in Edmonton won the Pacific Coast League championship and led minor league baseball with 202 home runs. The Indians were just 2-6 against Rochester last season when they were affiliated with Baltimore. The Tribe's two wins came at Victory Field. The Indians are 18-22 against the Red Wings since joining the IL in 1998 and have won the season series only once (7-1 in 1999). ROSTER MOVE: LHP John Foster has been optioned to Indianapolis from Milwaukee. He is expected to join the team later this week. Foster was 2-0 with a 4.50 ERA in 20 games with the Brewers. In 18.0 innings he allowed 26 hits and seven walks while striking out 12. YESTERDAY: The Indians split a doubleheader at Ottawa. The Lynx took game one 4-0 on the strength of a complete game shutout by Rigo Beltran. Beltran has tossed 17 straight scoreless innings. The Indians rebounded with a 6-5 win in the nightcap. Mark Smith was 2-for-3 with three RBI. His two-run homer in the sixth broke a 3-3 tie and put the Indians in the lead for good. Keith Luuloa was 2-for-3 with two RBI. He scored what proved to be the winning run after doubling in the sixth. DUROCHER ON REHAB: RHP Jayson Durocher is with the Indians on a rehab assignment. Durocher underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right elbow to remove bone spurs on March 8. Durocher has made five appearances working one inning each time. He allowed his first runs Thursday against Ottawa. Durocher pitched one inning in game one of yesterday's doubleheader. He is scheduled to pitch one inning tonight, working on back-to-back days for the first time. If all goes well, he is expected to rejoin Milwaukee tomorrow. ON THE MOUND: Lefthander Travis Miller makes his second start and fourth appearance with the Indians since signing as a free agent on May 11. Miller last pitched 10 days ago when he started against Pawtucket. He allowed just one hit over the first two innings, but left with the bases loaded and two outs in the third. A grand slam by Julio Zuleta allowed all three runs to score and tarnish Miller's line. The 2.2 innings was his longest outing of the year. Miller's last starts came in the 1998 season. LEAGUE LEADER: RHP David Manning ranks third in the IL with a 1.88 ERA. After starting the year with six relief appearances (0-0, 3.27), Manning has made six starts going 3-1 with a 1.53 ERA. TURNING UP THE HEAT: Jim Rushford is hitting .375 (6-for-16) over the last five games while Steve Scarborough is hitting .286 (4-for-14) in that period. ALL GOOD THINGS MUST COME TO AN END: Nearly all of Mark Smith's streaks came to an end on the road trip. Smith reached base safely in 23 straight games from April 26 - May 23 which ties for the longest streak of its kind in the IL this season. He hit safely in 15 straight road games from April 19 - May 22 which also ties for the longest streak in the IL. Smith had a 14-game hitting streak from April 26 - May 12 which ranks as the fourth longest in the IL. Smith still has one active streak. He has reached base safely in 12 straight home games dating back to April 26. That ties for the 10th longest streak in the circuit and the third-longest active streak. Smith leads the Indians with a .317 average, 24 RBI and 12 multi-hit games. He was the Indians Player of the Month for April. 'KOLB' AS ICE: Opponents are hitting a frigid .179 against Tribe reliever Dan Kolb. Kolb has recorded a 1.16 ERA in 17 games allowing three earned runs in 23.1 innings. Kolb has struck out 20 batters in his last 14.2 innings (9 G). ON THE BOARD EARLY: The Indians have scored a team-best 34 runs in the first inning. The Tribe has plated a first-inning run in 17 games this season, but is just 7-10 in those games. The ninth inning is the only inning in which the Indians have not scored in double figures (8). The Indians have scored just 32 runs over the seventh, eighth and ninth innings. UPCOMING PROBABLES: Tuesday vs. Rochester - RHP Adam Johnson (1-5, 9.22) vs. LHP Nate Teut (1-2, 3.18) Wednesday vs. Rochester - LHP Brent Hoard (2-3, 7.41) vs. RHP David Manning (3-1, 1.88) Thursday vs. Rochester - RHP Matt Carnes (0-0, 2.89) vs. RHP Dave Burba (2-5, 3.86)
  2. David Weiser's Huntsville Update: May weather here has been the worst since 1991 that I can remember --- very wet and much cooler than normal. Fortunately, there hadn't been a single rainout this month, despite record rainfall amounts in this city......... While the weather was cool, the Stars stayed hot as they pounded the Diamond Jaxx once again --- 29 hits in 3 days, hitting .287 in this series. The Stars kept 1½ in first place as Birmingham beat Mobile, 4-2 on Sunday......... The Stars end the first half with this team and Birmingham, so it is no time to give an inch to either. I look forward to seeing a sweep tomorrow afternoon as Mike Jones takes the hill in a bid to win his 6th. The Stars continue to run rings around the Jaxx -- 14 stolen bases in 15 attempts and this series isn't over. That's far more bases and attempts this season off any opponent this young season. (They stole 8 bases in 10 attempts vs. Mobile, April 22-25)........ I'd like to see what the record is for a four-game series, but I won't have the time. That is something I'd like to look into, though. Ryan Gripp's starts for Huntsville are rare. He was a sub-par hitter for the Diamond Jaxx the last two seasons, hitting .232 last year, and was traded to Milwaukee for Paul Bako after he was passed over in the Rule V draft........ Hitless in 10 trips as a pinch-hitter, in his rare starts he makes the most of his opportunities. He came in hitting .250, .286 after this game........ He was clearly the hero in this game, doubling his RBI total, but it was another Ryan was the catalyst for two of the Stars' three rallies. Ryan Knox led off the game with a bunt single, then took second on a single to right by Dave Krynzel who continues to freely spray the ball ....... That extended Krynzel's hitting streak to 8 games........ J.J. Hardy's grounder moved Knox to 3rd, setting up the first of Ryan Gripp's four RBIs......... With two out, Gripp singled to score Knox. Richard Paz followed with a single to score Hardy as the Stars answered back the Diamond Jaxx' two runs. In the 5th inning, Knox once more led off with a hit --- a sharp single to center. He stole second and Krynzel walked. Hardy sacrificed them both to scoring position........ Corey Hart was intentionally walked so loser Jason Szuminski could try and get the double play grounder from Gripp........ Instead, he rifled a single to center, scoring two runs to break the 2-2 tie........ With Corey at 3rd and Gripp on 1st, the Stars pulled off the double steal, with Hart scoring on the throw to get Gripp.......... The Stars would seal the victory in the 7th against Eric Brown as Krynzel added another triple to his league lead of six to the right field corner........ J.J. singled him home and Gripp once more came through in an RBI situation, smacking a double over the head of Ray Sadler in center field......... Kade Johnson hit his first RBI single since coming up to Huntsville to make the score, 8-3. Hopefully, this will be the hit that breaks him out of this 2-for-28 start. He proved at High Desert that he really carries a big bat, but most hitters who come up to Huntsville find out there's a big adjustment to make. Once he does get in the groove, I think he will really help this club out. Derek Lee won his first game since May 8. The General pitched his 600th inning in the 3rd inning of today's game. He has pitched more innings and struck out more batters against the Diamond Jaxx than any other Southern League opponent......... He also has the best strikeout rate against this team (6.7 Ks/9IP). Since 1999, he is 5-7 with a 2.75 ERA against the Jaxx........ He ties Mike Jones (5-1, 2.73) for the club lead in victories....... Jonesy will have a chance to recapture it tomorrow as he faces John Webb (0-6, 4.82) in a noon game for Memorial Day......... Matt Childers battled through two innings to finish the game. He has 2 saves in 8 appearances and a 2.81 ERA this month........ The Stars will be adding another pitcher to their roster this week as 28-year old right-hander Ken Ray helps offset the absences of Ben Hendrickson, Ben Diggins, and Matt Hammons. He joins the team from High Desert, where he was 1-1 with a 7.71 ERA in 7 appearances for the Mavs, after being signed as a free agent on April 28..... Ray has knocked around the minors since 1993, starting in the Royals system, getting a taste of the majors in 1999. He pitched in the Indy leagues for Long Island and Yuma last year....... Former Star Jack Krawczyk, who was lost in the minor league phase of the Rule V draft last year, made his debut for the Lancaster Jethawks today, pitching a scoreless inning as the Jethawks beat the High Desert Mavericks Sunday, 7-4. The Jethawks are the California League farm team of the Arizona Diamondbacks...

  4. From the Brewers' site today: Speaking of Huntsville, Mark McCarter of the Huntsville Times pointed out that with Brian Adams and Corey Hart on the roster, Huntsville now leads the Southern League in '80s rockers. And where did McCarter read that the moment Brewerfan mentioned the Brian Adams acquisition? Sheesh...http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

  6. For those wondering, yes, the Beloit web site has been unavailable all weekend. They'll probably address this on Tuesday. I've been unable to properly load David Weiser's Huntsville web site, www.starsboxscore.com Monday morning. We'll try later on today, and cut and paste his update then.

  9. Awesome report, Madbad -- thanks! Beloit Game Summary (from the Kane County Site): Geneva, IL ? Brant Colamarino (3-for-5, 2 RBI) delivered a bases loaded two-out RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning, leading the Cougars (33-17) to a thrilling 4-3 victory over the Beloit Snappers (20-27). Chris Shank (5-0) picked up the win in relief, even though he gave up the tying run in the top of the ninth. Ryan Trytten (2-3) surrendered the final run to suffer the loss for Beloit. The rally in the ninth inning started on a walk to Marcus McBeth. With one out, Kory Wayment ripped a single to left field, advancing McBeth to third base. John Baker was intentionally walked, Jason Basil popped up to second base for the second out, but Colamarino followed with the game-winning hit on an 0-2 pitch. Leading 3-2 in the ninth inning, Travis Hinton delivered a one-out double scoring Steve Moss and forcing the game to the bottom of the ninth. The final result of the game overshadowed the great starting performance by Jared Burton. The right-hander, who was making his second start of the season, gave up one lone hit in six innings pitched. Burton walked two and fanned a season high six in the no-decision. Beloit scored two runs off Shawn Kohn in the seventh inning to cut the deficit to one. Hinton singled home Prince Fielder and Pedro Esparragoza reached on a fielder?s choice to plate home Moss. Colamarino began the scoring for the Cougars with a one-out bases loaded single in the first inning, giving the Cougars a 1-0 lead. Wayment scored his 33rd on the play, putting him as the team leader in that category. The Cougars added two runs in the fifth inning, knocking starter Luis Pena out of the game. Francis Gomez and Baker picked up the RBI?s. Beloit Box Score: Nice work by LHP Justin Gabriel in middle relief; still can't help but think that Luis Pena could have benefited from time in Helena and that there were other fifth starter options... 10. Lancaster (Diamondbacks) 7, High Desert 4 Mavs get swept by a combined score of 37-7 over the three-game series. Trailing 7-1 heading into the ninth, the Mavs batted around and got the tying run on base before Scott Candelaria lined out to the outfield to end it. The High Desert bullpen kept it within reach in the late innings, as the High Desert site game summary will detail later on. It's off to Northern California now for the Mavs, which has proven to be a very tough road trip the past couple of times out. There's no way that Reid Nichols figures out a way to bounce Manny Parra, Tom Wilhelmsen and Dennis Sarfate all past high-A next year. One maybe, but not all three. We may have to wait until then to see a Maverick starter excel, something we haven't seen since Ben Hendrickson was in the desert last spring. Don't want that to sound too harsh, as Hall, Saenz, Kolb, and Robinson may all contribute at AA next year, but the three converted Beloit relievers (Hall, Saenz, and Kolb) have all struggled in their high-A roles. High Desert Site Game Summary: ADELANTO, CA ? The Lancaster JetHawks remained in first place in the Cal League?s South Division, winning their third straight game on Sunday afternoon, beating the High Desert Mavericks by a score of 7-4 at Mavericks Stadium. The loss is the fourth straight for High Desert, and the first time they have been swept on their home field. Dan Uggla hit his third homer of the series and 11th of the year to break open a close game in the fifth inning. With the JetHawks leading 2-1 in the fifth, Uggla connected off Mavs starter Danny Kolb for a 5-1 lead. Uggla picked up another RBI in a two-run sixth inning as the JetHawks took a 7-1 lead. That lead looked like it would be enough, until the Mavs started to rally in the ninth. JetHawks closer Pete Sikaras was charged with three runs, while retiring just two men in the ninth. Carlton Wells came on and walked Jason Belcher with the bases loaded to put the tying run on base. Billy Biggs then came on and threw just one pitch to record his second save though, as Scott Candelaria lined out to center with the tying run at first base to end the game. The JetHawks took the early lead off Kolb (2-3), as Jay Garthwaite hit his sixth of the year in the second inning for a 1-0 lead. The Mavs answered in the third, as Belcher knocked in Ralph Santana who singled with one out, then stole second base. In the fourth, Garthwaite knocked in the go-ahead run at 2-1, with a fielder?s choice. Lancaster starter Justin Wechsler (5-2) pitched six innings, allowing just one run on five hits. Former Maverick Jack Krawczyk pitched one scoreless inning, in his first appearance against his former parent club. Mavs starter Danny Kolb allowed seven runs on ten hits as he took the loss. Justin Backsmeyer and Jeff Hundley combined to pitch 3.2 innings of scoreless relief. The Mavs were outscored in the three-game series 37-7, and were out-homered 12-0. The Mavs travel to Stockton on Monday as they face the Ports in game one of a three-game set. Jeff Robinson (1-0) will take on Ben Keiter of the Ports at 7:05 (9:05 Central). The Mavs return home on Friday, June 7th to face Lake Elsinore. High Desert Box Score: Pretty sure it's killing Brad Nelson that he can't be helping his teammates out right now... 13. Huntsville 8, West Tenn (Cubs) 4 Ryan Gripp a huge game with three base hits and four RBI; Kade Johnson a feel-good bloop base hit and RBI; Ryan Knox again with his recent hot bat; David Krynzel with yet another triple; Corey Hart still hitting the ball hard even if the hits didn't fall today; Hart did steal home on a double steal as the Stars continue to run wild this series; Jackson Melian's back at AA (from AAA Iowa) and did hit a HR; Derek Lee win #5, Matt Childers with nice work closing it out -- that's enough, Huntsville site update to be up before you know it...
  14. Game One: Ottawa (Orioles) 4, Indianapolis 0 Game Two: Indianapolis 6, Ottawa 5 Indy Site Doubleheader Summary: OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- Mark Smith homered and drove in three runs as the Indianapolis Indians defeated the Ottawa Lynx 6-5 in the second game of a doubleheader Sunday. The win gave the Tribe (17-30) a split of the four-game series and a split of the twinbill. Ottawa won the first game 4-0. Smith, who has been the Indians top hitter all season, put the Indians on top 1-0 with his 11th double of the season in the first inning. He and Jim Rushford came around to score later in the inning as the Tribe took a 3-0 lead. Some defensive miscues by Indianapolis helped Ottawa tie the game in the second inning. Left fielder Joe Lawrence got turned around on a fly ball by Jose Leon that hit the wall and went for a double. Fletcher Bates and Napoleon Calzado followed with back-to-back liners down the right field line. Rushford had trouble tracking both balls down, and the triples plated two runs. A single by Steve Lomasney scored Calzado with the tying run. The Indians took the lead for good in the sixth. After Rushford drew a leadoff walk off of starter Eric DuBose (4-3), Smith belted his fourth home run of the season just inside the left field foul pole. Lynx manager Gary Allenson spent several minutes arguing with home plate umpire James Hoye, but the home run stood. Keith Luuloa, who was 3-for-6 on the afternoon, smashed a double into the gap in left-center. He later scored the Tribe's sixth run on a sacrifice fly by Cody McKay. Ottawa rallied with two runs in the bottom of the seventh, but Jason Childers got out of the jam to earn his second save and make a winner out of starter Pasqual Coco (4-4). "This was a good win for us," manager Cecil Cooper said. "We've been struggling, and for us to come back after having a lead and then losing it showed some character. Hopefully that's something we can build on as we come back home." Ottawa won the first game of Sunday's doubleheader on the strength of hurler Rigo Beltran. The lefthander, who had worked seven scoreless innings in his previous start, turned in another seven shutout frames against the Indians. He held the Tribe to four hits and three walks while striking out six to improve to 3-0. The Lynx got all the runs they needed in a three-run second inning off Dave Burba (2-5). Chris Lemonis singled home the first two runs then scored on a double by B.J. Littleton. The Indians return to Victory Field Monday to open an eight-game homestand with a 6 p.m. contest against the Rochester Red Wings. Indianapolis Game One Box Score: Yawn... 16. Kane County (A's) 2, Beloit 1, 12 innings Maybe if the Snappers activate Don Money -- can't complain about the pitching, though... Game Summary from the Cougars' Site: Kirk Nordness reached on a bases loaded two-out error by shortstop Chas Terni in the bottom of the 12th, plating Brant Colamarino, leading the Cougars (32-17) to a 2-1 victory over the Beloit Snappers (20-26). Manny Rodriguez (1-0) pitched a 1-2-3 12th inning to earn his first win. Gabe Mendoza (1-2) surrendered the unearned run in the Cougars final at-bat to suffer the loss. The victory for the Cougars was their fourth straight and their seventh consecutive win against Beloit this season. Kane County is now 4-0 in extra-innings and 21-4 against the Western Division. Both starting pitching pitchers were terrific during seven-inning stints. Cougars? starter, Joe Blanton yielded five hits, one run, and fanned six. Dennis Sarfate matched Blanton punch for punch, giving up just four hits (none after the second inning), one run and fanning five. The bullpens were equally tremendous. Cougars? relievers Edward Sierra, Jeff Muessig, and Rodriguez were scoreless in five innings. Bo Hall, Josh Alliston, and Mendoza allowed one unearned run in 4.2 innings pitched. For the first time in the series, the Cougars lit up the scoreboard first, plating home a run in their first at-bat. Francis Gomez and Kory Wayment began the inning with singles, and John Baker hit into a fielder?s choice to plate home Gomez. Beloit tied the game at one in the fifth inning. Travis Hinton blasted a solo-home run off Blanton. The home run was the first for Hinton and the fourth allowed by Blanton on the season. The two teams conclude their four-game series Sunday night at Elfstrom Stadium with ? game time is 6:00 PM. The pitching match-up features Jared Burton RHP (2-1, 2.81) taking on Luis Pena RHP (0-2, 3.86). 17. Lancaster (Diamondbacks) 16, High Desert 2 Not exactly wowing the home crowds this weekend, these Mavericks -- so much for the classic Brewer jerseys; this team has gutted it out for a while, but now just seems to be overmatched on a nightly basis -- it may be a long, long hot desert summer... High Desert Site Game Summary: ADELANTO, CA ? The Lancaster JetHawks established new season-highs in both hits and runs as they pounded the Mavs for a second straight game, winning on Saturday night at Mavericks Stadium by a score of 16-2. Kyle Nichols hit two home runs and Chris Snyder hit a grand slam as the JetHawks picked up 20 base hits against Maverick pitching. The JetHawks took a 2-0 lead in the second inning as Nichols hit his eighth of the year off Mavs starter Brian Mazone. They scored four more in the third to go up 6-0. A run in the fourth gave them a 7-0 lead before the Mavs got their first base runner. Matthew Henrie (3-5) was stingy on the hill, retiring the first nine hitters he faced, before the Mavs broke the ice in the fourth. Chris Morris singled to lead off the inning, then stole second. After a Johnny Raburn single moved Morris to third, Morris scored on a sac fly from Froilan Villanueva. After Scott Candelaria reached on a fielder?s choice, Jason Belcher doubled him home to cut the lead to five runs at 7-2. The JetHawks stockpiled runs in the next few innings, scoring two in the fifth, two in the sixth, one in the seventh, and finally four in the eighth, on Snyder?s first grand slam of the year. Maverick reliever David Nolasco gave up a one-out single to Mike Thiessen, then walked two straight before allowing Snyder?s sixth homer of the year, and third in two games. Mazone (0-5) allowed nine runs in five innings, while Nolasco gave up seven in three innings. Bobby Bystrowski pitched a scoreless ninth for High Desert. The Mavs have now allowed 30 runs on 35 hits in the last two games. Lancaster had six men with multi-hit games, led by Nichols and Mayobanex Santana who each had four hits. The Mavs look to break their three-game losing streak on Sunday afternoon, sending Danny Kolb (2-2) to the hill against Justin Wechsler (4-2) at 3:05 (5:05 Central). 18. Huntsville 13, West Tenn (Cubs) 9 And this one was billed as a pitchers' duel -- Pedro Liriano did do well... Huntsville Site Game Summary: Nice detailed account as always -- huge game for the top of the order; it mentions Matt Parker in relief here, they meant Ryan Miller... www.huntsvillestars.com/n...?newsid=75 David Weiser's Huntsville Update: RECORD DAY FOR DAVEWhatever Corey Hart and Dave Krynzel have been eating, they need to share their diet plan with the rest of the team. The Stars badly needed a purgative game like this, and it was a laugher until the Diamond Jaxx exploded for seven runs in the 6th inning off lefthander Brian Adams, making an unimpressive home debut....... As for Hart --- four hits! The second four-hit game by a Huntsville Star this year (Krynzel had the other one) and four RBIs!....... Man, he's been on a tear! 9-for-16 in his last four games and 16-for-31 (.516) in his last 9 games, making him a sure bet as league honors candidate at the end of the month....... In addition, 8 runs batted in and 6 doubles in his last 9 games....... In a single day, Corey boosted his batting mark from .298 to .313 --- his highest mark since starting the season 2-for-6. Dave Krynzel's day was no less remarkable. Four stolen bases --- tying a club record........ Stan Javier had achieved this twice during the 1985 season -- on July 3 and July 27 and Kerwin Moore repeated this feat on August 28, 1998........ That gives Krynzel six stolen bases in two days, which also ties a record held by Javier and Moore. After Ryan Knox reached first base to lead off the Stars half of the 1st inning, Krynzel hit into a force play, then stole 2nd and 3rd. He would score on Hart's single to left center, also scoring Richard Paz who reached on a walk...... Hart would score on Chris Barnwell's two-out infield single, as the Stars batted around in the first off D'Jaxx starter Angel Guzman, who did not have a pretty day. In the second, Knox doubled down the left field line, stopping at third on Krynzel's infield single. With the count 2-and-1 on Paz, Krynzel stole 2nd, but Paz could only bring in Knox on a fly ball to right. Krynzel would score on Hart's double to the center field wall........ By the third inning, Knox was up for the third time, striking out as the Stars took a 6-2 lead into the dugout on Barnwell's thunderous home run to left....... By the time the Stars came up in the 4th inning, Guzman had been spent. He had thrown 74 pitches. Pedro Liriano, by comparison, had expended 53 --- quite a few as Liriano went 2-and-2 and 3-and-2 several times on hitters....... In the 4th inning, Krynzel hit another infield single, this time to the right side and stole his fourth base. Paz went full and walked, setting up Hart's fourth RBI, another double, this one down the left field line scoring Krynzel, giving the Stars a 7-2 lead....... Dave had at least four more innings to break the club record, but he struck out in the 5th, 6th, and 8th innings off new hurlers........ At this point, D'Jaxx manager Bobby Dickerson came out with the hook and Guzman was a gone Guzman after 85 pitches. The Stars made it five straight scoring innings for the first time since August 6, 1999, in a big way....... Taking the advice of his coaches to drive more inside pitches, Brandon Gemoll got hold of an inside breaking ball and collared it over the wall in right-center for a grand-slam home run, giving the Stars a big 12-2 lead, the third grand salami hit by the Stars this season (Corey Hart has the other two)....... The inning started on a tense moment, though, when Ryan Knox was hit, it appeared on the hand, by a pitch from reliever T.P. Waligora. Knox was in obvious pain and the concern was magnified by the fact that Knox's left hand was broken late last May by a pitch and almost exactly a year before that at High Desert on a pitch in exactly the same place......... Fortunately the word came back later in the game that it was a bruised right forearm. Knox was taken out of the game and replaced by Chris Cosbey in the 6th inning. He may be day-to-day. Manager Frank Kremblas went to Brian Adams in the sixth, inactive for five days. He had come into this game with three scoreless innings in relief on the Stars last road trip, but this was not his day......... He loaded the bases on a single to left by Jose Velazquez and walks to Jackson Melian, the former Huntsville Star who returned today to the Diamond Jaxx, and Josh Arteaga, on eight pitches....... Casey Kopitzke hit a hard 1-and-2 pitch to Hart, always an adventure at third base, but Corey stepped on the bag to force Melian, allowing Velazquez to score, then whipped the ball on target to first for the only double play of the game. Five successive singles followed, however, and then a two-base throwing error on another hard hit grounder to Hart, when all he had to do was step on third, something that should have been instant recall, to force Johnny Powers for the third out....... As a result, two runs scored and the Diamond Jaxx were back in the ballgame again, trailing by three runs....... The Stars were saved, though. Ryan Miller got Melian to fly out to Cosbey to end the inning and he and Mike Adams combined to slam the door on the Diamond Jaxx. Adams allowed a pair of runners to reach base in the top of the ninth, the latter on a freaky single that hit the top of the bag at third base and arced over the head of Hart, but he struck out Kopitzke on an 0-and-2 slider to end the game. Props to home plate ump Ria Cortesio for showing the restraint I haven't witnessed from crew chief John Woods and Brandon Bushee....... When Knox argued a called third strike to end the 3rd inning, Cortesio simply walked away. And when Liriano hit Brandon Harris with a pitch in the top of the 1st, she didn't throw him out!...... Cortesio is the Southern League's first female ump. Ben Diggins traveled to Milwaukee, Saturday, to have an MRI....... He could be facing season-ending surgery for a partially torn ligament in his elbow, however they are going to try to rehab it.. If Diggins opts for surgery, and this would be Tommy John surgery, he would be out for the rest of the Stars' season...... Pitcher Matt Hammons will throw from the side for a couple of days, starting Sunday, then be ready before the end of the week. Sunday at 2 pm, Derek Lee (4-2, 3.25) will get his chance to throw his 600th inning as a Huntsville Star (he needs just three) as he goes to the mound against D'Jaxx righty Travis Anderson (1-1, 5.06). There will be a Christian concert following the game, followed by salvation for everyone. But bring your rabbit's foot just in case. Now are you ready for this........ I never liked "West Tenn Diamond Jaxx" as a name, which is why I name the team after the city, Jackson, and I'm forced to stomach the name "Diamond Jaxx" cause there's nothing left to call them after that, but for the stupidest nickname for a team, I present the Montgomery Biscuits. Yes, that's the fearsome new name for the Montgomery franchise that will replace Orlando next season....... I am not kidding....... Their web site, www.biscuitsbaseball.com is already up on the internet, so take a look for yourself....... The name was chosen by owners Tom Dickson and Sherrie Myers among more than 3,000 entries in a fan contest........ The announcement was made on the main stage of the Jubilee City Fest with more than 10,000 people in attendance. God knows what the reaction was at the precise moment. I'm going to have to get onto www.al.com to see the reactions on the Montgomery forum...... For myself, I was laughing too much upon first hearing it to realize this was the stupidest name for a team in all creation. I guess they'll be playing, oh the jokes are pouring now, in "The Oven", coming out of "the oven" instead of the dugout as they're introduced. "The Biscuit Basket Catch" ...... I realize it's a challenge coming up with a name to match Montgomery's tarnished identity, since their cultural, social, and political history is nothing to be proud of, but just what does a biscuit have to do with baseball? Please, can anyone tell me??........ Don Rizzardi, one of the Stars official scorers came up with the name "Capitols", which is excellent. Tell me, out of all those entries, didn't one person come up with that, and if so, why didn't it click? ....... The team's official colors are orange, yellow, and white. How gay!....... And the mascot, named Monty, is a biscuit character with a pad of butter for a tongue........ Oh well, Montgomery has to live with this, not Huntsville. I hope the players coming up in the Tampa Bay farm system have a good sense of humor. Can't wait for the comedy act to come to Huntsville next season. I'll have to ask David to check with Ryan Knox -- I thought I remembered that each of Knox's hand injuries the past two years involved plays on the basepaths, and not HBP's. A painful reminder for Knox, either way -- MassBrew Huntsville Box Score: GAME DATE: 5/24/03 WEST TENN 9 AT HUNTSVILLE 13 YTD YTD WEST TENN AB R H BI AVG HUNTSVILLE AB R H BI AVG R.Sadler CF 5 1 2 0 .295 R.Knox RF 3 2 1 0 .255 B.Harris 3B 4 2 1 1 .282 C.Cosbey RF 0 0 0 0 .207 J.Powers 2B 5 1 2 1 .500 D.Krynzel CF 6 3 2 0 .306 J.Dubois RF 4 2 2 2 .326 R.Paz 2B 3 3 1 1 .250 J.Velazquez 1B 4 1 2 1 .261 C.Hart 3B 5 2 4 4 .313 J.Melian LF 3 0 1 0 .333 B.Gemoll 1B 4 1 1 4 .237 J.Leicester PIT 0 0 0 0 .000 D.Clark LF 4 0 1 0 .235 F.Sanchez PIT 0 0 0 0 .000 M.Kremblas CAT 3 1 0 1 .129 J.Hamilton PH 1 0 0 0 .219 C.Barnwell SS 5 1 2 2 .242 J.Arteaga SS 4 1 1 0 .255 P.Liriano PIT 3 0 0 0 .077 C.Kopitzke CAT 4 0 0 0 .233 B.Adams PIT 0 0 0 0 .000 A.Guzman PIT 2 0 0 0 .071 R.Miller PIT 1 0 0 0 .286 T.Waligora PIT 0 0 0 0 .000 R.Gripp PH 0 0 0 0 .210 M.Dzurilla PH 1 1 1 1 .277 M.Adams PIT 0 0 0 0 .000 M.Dzurilla LF 2 0 0 0 .277 TOTALS 39 9 12 6 TOTALS 37 13 12 12 WEST TENN 2 0 0 0 0 7 0 0 0- 9 12 3 HUNTSVILLE 3 2 1 2 4 0 0 1 X-13 12 1 E--J.Powers, J.Arteaga, C.Kopitzke, C.Hart. 21. We'll start things off a little differently today by asking everyone to remember to visit the Alumni thread here on the Minor League Forum (because we work so hard on it http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/tongue.gif ) . It was just revised today (Saturday), and includes the following updates that we think fans and friends of the Huntsville and High Desert organizations will find particularly interesting as they learn where old friends and teammates are playing now: May 24th Updates: Check out Cristian Guerrero in the "Prospects of Particular Interest" section. RHP Jack Krawczyk, released by the A's organization, is back in the California League with Lancaster (Arizona) and, in fact, could face High Desert this weekend. RHP's Ruddy Lugo, Matt Yeatman, and Gerry Oakes, all traded as noted by their names within the Alumni thread, have had rough times thus far in 2003. Many alums have been promoted or demoted this month, and these changes have been noted by each player's name. Many more independent league players who have just begun or are about to begin their seasons have been added -- look for these names among others: Eliezer Alfonzo, Rodney Allen, Brant Brown, David Gibralter, Derry Hammond, Cedrick Harris, Chris McGee, Heath McMurray, Aaron Myers, Chris Rowan, Jeff Sparks, and Jude Voltz. You've got to give credit to the Independent League guys for sticking with it -- so few end up back in affiliated ball. Former Beloit pitcher Heath McMurray started out in indy ball in 2002, was picked up by the Reds' organization, and pitched pretty well for them, but finds himself among the independent ranks again in 2003. And don't think it's easy to find a spot with these teams. Former Ogden Raptor Jeremy Shorey (2000, 2001) had signed on to be the local boy with the Bangor (Maine) Lumberjacks this spring after not pitching in 2002. He was just released, and told to keep pitching in case someone goes down or doesn't do well. He had an excellent pre-season for them: 9 innings pitched, 12 K's, no walks, 4 hits, no runs. But they only keep 22 players and they have to keep five rookies and so it came down to a numbers game, again. There are strict limits on how many players with varying amounts of pro ball experience can make up each roster. By the way, we located RHP Doug Johnston (he of the infamous Ray King steal from the Cubs). He's pitching for the Lincoln (Nebraska) Salt Dogs in the Northern League. He doesn't appear on our Alumni list, which begins as of January 2001 for minor league players.

  24. Final: Lancaster (Diamondbacks) 14, High Desert 1 High Desert Site Game Summary: ADELANTO, CA ? The Lancaster JetHawks connected on a season-best seven home runs, as they crushed the High Desert Mavericks on Friday night at Mavericks Stadium by a score of 14-1. Sergio Santos tied a California League record by hitting three home runs on the night. Dan Uggla and Chris Snyder chipped in with two each as the JetHawks ended a two-game losing streak. The JetHawks scored one run in each of the first three innings against Mavs starter Dan Hall (4-4). Dan Uggla connected for his ninth of the year in the first and Santos hit his second of the year in the third to make it 3-0. The Mavs got their only run of the game when Chris Morris walked with one out in the third, then scored on an RBI single by Johnny Raburn. The Mavs were never offensively in it, collecting just three hits on the night against JetHawks starter Lance Cormier (5-3), who got the win, going six strong innings. The JetHawks added a run in the fourth and then blew it wide open in the sixth, scoring six times. Chris Snyder hit his fourth of the year, a two-run shot to make it 6-1. Sergio Santos hit his second on the night, to cap the inning and make it 10-1 after six. Snyder homered again in the seventh to make it 11-1. Uggla and Santos each blasted another in the eighth. Uggla finished the night with three hits and two RBIs. Snyder finished the night with four hits and three RBIs Santos had the best night, with six total RBIs to go along with his three bombs. Hall took the loss, allowing eight runs in 5.1 innings. Kenny Ray was hit hard, allowing six runs, including four homers, in just just 2.2 innings. Justin Backsmeyer came on and worked a scoreless ninth for High Desert. The Mavs send Brian Mazone (0-4) to the hill on Saturday night, as he faces Lancaster?s Matthew Henrie (2-5) at 7:05 (9:05 Central) in game two of the three game series. The Mavs will be wearing 1980?s Milwaukee Brewers jerseys, which will be auctioned off after the game courtesy of McDonald?s. 25. Everything you could possibly need to know about the Huntsville victory -- Huntsville Site Game Summary: www.huntsvillestars.com/n...?newsid=74 David Weiser's back after some rain-induced days off: ROBBEDAll's well that ends well, but getting there sometimes is hard on the eyes....... Early signs were telling me this was going to be the same ol' same ol' as the Stars endeavored to break their 5-game losing streak. The bad breaks kept coming. In the 2nd inning, with runners on the corners after a leadoff double in the alley to right by Corey Hart, Chris Barnwell bunted the first pitch he saw, straight up in the air where catcher Lukas McKnight was waiting, ending the inning......... In the top of the 3rd, Josh Arteaga hit a routine fly ball to Dave Krynzel in center that was routinely caught. But in transferring the ball to his hand to throw it back in, he dropped it. Third base umpire John Woods impulsively gave Arteaga second base. I couldn't believe this! Krynzel did not try to, in one motion, catch and throw the ball back in to the infield. Why would he have any reason to? Arteaga was the leadoff hitter........ It was a snap call --- an impetuous, impulsive, spurious call that cost the Stars their first run......... On the next play, Lukas McKnight hit a fly ball, again to Krynzel. This time Krynzel squeezed it before he threw, but perhaps in anger, he overthrew the ball to third base, over the head of Hart, allowing Arteaga to reach third, doubling his entire error total for the season on one play......... Arteaga would then score on a pitch that went through Kade Johnson's legs. The Stars, always a never-say-die bunch during this bad spell, scored three runs in the 3rd, highlighted by J.J. Hardy's long drive over the Papa John's sign (the third tier of billboards) in left for a 2-run HR. But more of the same hair-trigger reaction from this crew led by John Woods continued in the 4th inning....... With one out and nobody on in the top of the 4th, Luis Martinez was ejected from the game after his high, inside, first pitch grazed McKnight in the shoulder....... Martinez, robbed from getting the winning decision in this game, was thumbed by home plate ump Brandon Bushee without a warning, which I thought would have been the customary thing to do for an ump, a professional one, anyway....... Manager Frank Kremblas came out to protest, at huge risk given the record of this umpiring crew, to no avail, of course......... Stay tuned, Stars fans. This is a three-game series and the men (and woman) in blue are just getting warmed up. Matt Parker, who was scheduled to be one of the starting pitchers in the Greenville series, continued his perfect streak in May --- 13 2/3 innings this month without allowing an earned run, in relief of Martinez, holding the 3-1 lead........ Nervous enough with just a two-run lead, and bad luck still hounding the Stars, the uneasiness continued when Hart overthrew Gemoll on ground ball by Mike Dzurilla to lead off the 7th....... Just an inning before, Hart had made a fine play after dropping a liner hit by Jason Dubois. Hart picked up the ball on the bounce and rocketed the ball to 1st base, where Gemoll made a fine play on the other end, making the big stretch to catch Hart's bullet......... With the hit-and-run on, shortstop Nick Ortiz knocked the first pitch to him beautifully between first and second, allowing Dzurilla to go to third....... Reliever Matt Childers was able to strikeout Arteaga on a 2-2 pitch, and get McKnight to fly to shallow center. Diamond Jaxx manager Bobby Dickerson had Dzurilla running and he was almost caught in a rundown, but the ball by Krynzel was overthrown and only Gemoll, who kept the ball in play, kept the runner honest and he was chased back to third........ Just as it looked like the Stars would get out of the inning, newly-acquired pinch-hitter John Powers, a former Mobile Bay Bear, lined an 0-2 pitch to left, scoring Dzurilla to make the score, 3-2. The Stars, however, put together the insurance runs in the 7th....... With one out, Krynzel walked then stole his 2nd base of the night. Kicking the ball out of the glove of Nick Ortiz, he scurried and slid safely into third. Hardy, recovered from his lower back strain with all that rest the Stars got thanks to Mother Nature, dropped a single that fell between Josh Arteaga, the right fielder Jason Dubois, and 1st baseman Dzurilla in shallow right field. That scored Krinkles, and on the throw to the plate, Hardy took second. With two out, Hardy would score on Gemoll's single to short....... After that, six of the next seven Jaxx hitters were retired to end the game. So, all's well that ends well. The Stars snap their 5-game losing streak and even better, leap over Birmingham back into first place. The Barons were shutout by Mobile, 2-0 at Hank Aaron Stadium....... Luis Martinez (2.08 ERA in May) continues his streak of having never given up more than two earned runs per start...... A bigger oddity, though, is the number of unearned runs on his ledger....... Only 8 of the 17 runs he's given up have been earned. In the history of the Huntsville Stars, only one pitcher has had more than 40% of his total runs given up, unearned --- Weston Weber in 1991, who pitched 34 games, all in relief. He gave up 23 runs, but 43.5% of them were unearned........ So far this season, 52.9% of the runs given up by Martinez have been unearned....... Says something about our defense, doesn't it?....... Tonight the Stars committed 4 of the 7 errors in this game. That makes 61 errors in 44 games........ The seven errors is the most in a game since April 13, when the Stars played Jacksonville. Mike Adams, who picked up an easy save #5, has now allowed only two earned runs in 7 2/3 innings over his last seven appearances....... Krynzel doubled, singled, and walked in three plate appearances against his former high school teammate from Green Valley High in Henderson, Nevada, Mike Nannini. Krinkles and Nannini are not, per se, close buds, but they do keep tabs on each other and have since they began their pro careers. Nannini, in fact, was the more highly regarded and sought after of the two out of high school. The Astros grabbed him in the 1st round of the 1998 draft and a year ago, was the #17 minor league prospect in the Houston organization........ Feasting on Nannini put Krinkles over .300 (now at .305) for the first time this season. He's 11-for-23 on his current 6-game hit streak, and .343 for May....... There is, however, that 57.7% stolen base success rate and he's within aim of the club record of 20 in one season, owned since 1985 by Luis Polonia. Dave has 11. Add the five from last year, and he's 16th on the Stars' all-time list, tied with a host of four other former Stars....... Corey Hart equaled his April total of six doubles tonight....... Luis Martinez nearly hit his first fair ball tonight. On a 2-and-1 pitch, he hit a ball, actually swung at it, taking one hop fair inside the baseline on the 3rd base side, before going foul. He could have beaten it out if it had stayed fair. He wound up striking out as he always does, and is now 0-for-13 on the season, all of them strikeouts. Saturday, they're giving tote bags away to the first 1,500 adults...... Goody. I can add to my tote bag collection. In the trunk of my car....... Pedro Liriano (3-4, 2.74) will start for Huntsville. Angel Guzman (0-1, 3.18), who is one tough cookie, will go for the Diamond Jaxx. He's the #1 pitcher in the Cub organization, and the #2 prospect overall behind Hee Seop Choi, who's already in Chicago. Some Cub officials believe he's on the same track Mark Prior was, and could go up just as quick. The Stars did not see him on their trip to Pringles Park........ Liriano is 2-1 with a 1.63 ERA in four starts this month. He averages 3.32 runs of support/9 innings, but has had no runs in back of him in his last two starts. Bucky Jacobsen homered in Friday night's game against the Lookouts, helping Tennessee to a 7-4 victory and giving the former Huntsville Star, the HR leadership in the Southern League.
