  1. Huntsville Site Game Summary: On a bizarre play in the 10th inning, Huntsville lost a heartbreaker to the Bay Bears, 3-1, on Wednesday night at Joe Davis Stadium. After a five-game winning streak, the Stars (4-3, 35-31) have lost three straight to fall into a three-way tie for first in the Southern League West second-half standings. First-half champion Mobile (4-3, 44-33) joins the Stars and Birmingham atop the division. The Stars? 10th-inning miscues spoiled a tremendous start by lefty Ryan Costello, who finished seven innings for the first time this season, equaling his season-high with seven strikeouts. Costello permitted just one run on four hits ? all but one were singles ? and two walks but got no decision. With two down in the 10th and the score tied 1-1, Bears leadoff hitter Marcus Nettles doubled to right-center. On a 2-2 pitch from Paul Stewart, who was working on 2 2/3 scoreless innings of relief, Ronnie Merrill hit a chopper toward second, where Rickie Weeks fielded the ball to his right. Weeks? errant off-balance throw short-hopped in front of first baseman Prince Fielder before he reached the bag, and the ball glanced off Fielder?s glove. Nettles rounded third and headed home, and Fielder recovered the ball quickly but threw wildly, pulling catcher Kade Johnson way off the plate. Nettles? alertly circled behind Johnson and reached back to touch the plate, scoring the go-ahead run. Josh Barfield?s double to right scored Merrill for a 3-1 Bears lead. Greg Sain?s run-scoring single put Mobile up 1-0 in the first, and Huntsville tied it by manufacturing a run in the seventh. Chris Barnwell led off with a single and Johnny Raburn laid down a sacrifice bunt. Bears starter Clay Hensley, who tossed seven strong innings of his own, elected to go to second, but Barnwell beat the throw. Kade Johnson sacrificed the runners to second and third, and Ozzie Chavez?s sacrifice fly scored Barnwell with the tying run. R. D. Spiehs (4-0) picked up his fourth win in relief, fanning one and allowing one hit over 1 1/3 scoreless innings. Stewart (4-1) suffered a hard-luck loss, permitting two unearned runs on four hits and no walks with one strikeout over three innings. Brad Baker notched his 21st save, giving up one hit in a scoreless ninth inning. Stars righty Dennis Sarfate (4-7, 4.46) meets Bears right-hander Mike Thompson (4-0, 3.49) in game two of the series on a Thursday Thirsty presented by WTAK at Joe Davis Stadium. Game time is 7:05 p.m.
  2. Indianapolis Star Game Story: Once again, Indians can't locate a run Farnsworth's strong pitching effort, several scoring opportunities wasted in shutout loss By Andrea Cohen andrea.cohen@indystar.com On Tuesday, the Indianapolis Indians won on a walk-off home run in the 12th inning. On Wednesday, the clutch hitting just wasn't there. One day after a two-run homer from Peter Bergeron produced what manager Cecil Cooper called "possibly the biggest win of the year," the Indians were shut out 3-0 by the Buffalo Bisons at Victory Field. Indianapolis stranded nine runners and squandered several situations with runners on base and no outs. "We had the bases loaded (in the second inning) and a chance to get something and we didn't get anything," Cooper said. "Then again in the fifth we had guys on first and second with nobody out. That's really kind of the ball game. We pitched well enough to win, but the hits weren't there." Indians starter Jeff Farnsworth (2-3) pitched his way out of two bases-loaded jams, giving up just one run in his five innings on the mound. That came in the fifth inning, when Ernie Young's bases-loaded single scored Grady Sizemore. Farnsworth won his first start of the season but struggled while working on adjustments with his mechanics through the middle part of June. He was the pitcher of record in a nine-run loss June 14 and a 10-run loss June 19. He won in his June 25 start, and Cooper said he was happy with Farnsworth's performance Wednesday. "It's a work in progress," Farnsworth said. "Today I gave up some bloopers and guys were fouling a lot of pitches off, which I don't want to see. But it's getting better." The seven-hit, one-run performance lowered Farnsworth's ERA by nearly a point, from 7.20 to 6.40. Indians reliever Ben Ford gave up a run in the seventh, and the Bisons sealed the deal with Jhonny Peralta's solo home run in the ninth off Clint Weibl. The Bisons' pitching was stingier, giving up just two hits in the last four innings. Buffalo starter Kenny Rayborn (5-2) went six innings, allowing six hits. Cliff Bartosh and Fernando Cabrera each handled a hitless inning, and Scott Stewart finished with a one-hit ninth for his first save. While he had hoped Tuesday night's dramatic win would give his team some momentum Wednesday, Cooper said the struggle to get clutch hits isn't new to the Indians. "For the last 25 games or so, it's been tough for us to score runs," Cooper said. "Naturally, yesterday was a big lift and you think you're going to come out and hit the ball around. We had the chances. We just didn't capitalize."
  3. Arizona Brewers Box Score: David Krynzel taking advantage again of those rookie league catchers -- his foot must be feeling good; while some of the Arizona kids have struggled and others are holding their own, this team continues to be an incredible two-man show; first baseman Carlos Gallardo and second baseman Hernan Iribarren have combined to hit .508 (30-for-59) -- only six of the hits have been for extra bases (two HR's by Iribarren Wednesday), and only five combined walks thus far -- so these two are finding holes in the defense for singles like there's no tomorrow; one downside here, none of the Arizona batters drew a walk today. Not surprisingly, the Texas Rangers and Oakland A's entries, along with the Cubs, far outpace the other teams in this league in walks -- those clubs really do ingrain that OBP notion (and sign such players) right from the start... Helena Box Score: Great night offensively -- baserunners everywhere -- the eight walks are as pretty as the 18 base hits; after 12 games, Adam Mannon is putting up MVP-type numbers, adding to his league-leading HR and RBI totals; only 11 team errors after 12 games -- that's unheard of in rookie ball, with the youth and field condition factors; other than Miguel Garcia's struggles, the pitching held up OK here... 6. Beloit Game Summary from the Burlington Site: Burlington, Iowa ? Chris Coughlin tossed the very first nine?inning perfect game in the 83?year history of professional baseball in Burlington as the Bees (4?3, 26?51) beat the Beloit Snappers (2?5, 40?37) 3?0 tonight at Community Field. The only other perfect game in franchise history came on July 20, 1975, thrown by Abelino Pena in a 2?0 win in seven innings against Cedar Rapids. The last Midwest League perfect game was pitched by Clinton's Scott Dunn on August 3, 2000 against the Lansing Lugnuts in Clinton. Tonight's game was the Bees' second 2004 no?hitter as Dusty Hughes and Jake Mullis combined to make history against the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers on April 12th. There have now been 15 no?hitters in franchise history. Ironically, Coughlin and Mullis were teammates in college at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington last year and both graduated together last May. The only threat to break up the perfection came in the top of the eighth inning. With one out, Vinny Rottino hit a popup into shallow centerfield. Chris Lubanski, who was playing deep, came racing in and made a diving catch to rob him of a hit. Adam Heether sent Lubanski back to the warning track to haul one in on the very next play. Coughlin (2?1) struck out a career?high eleven in just his fifth professional start and got the final out on Josh Murray who bounced out to Mitch Maier, who celebrated his 22nd birthday today, at third base. Eleven strikeouts are the most in a single game by a Bees' pitcher this year. Snappers' starter Dana Eveland (5?3) got help from his defense with three double plays and three runners caught stealing to hold the Bees scoreless through six himself. In the bottom of the seventh, Kenard Springer led off with a double, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Adam Donachie, and scored as he outraced the throw to the plate on a slow grounder to third off the bat of Walter Sevilla. The Bees added two insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI double by Brandon Powell and a sacrifice fly by Maier. The Bees have won consecutive games for the first time since sweeping a double?header at the Quad Cities on May 1st. Angel Sanchez had to leave the game in the top of the fifth inning after jamming his right hand into third base while stealing the bag in the bottom of the fourth. The Bees and Snappers complete this series tomorrow night at 7:00 at Community Field. RH Kahi Kaanoi (1?1, 2.93) will start in place of Ambiorix Burgos who was scratched because of a blister. RH Greg Moreira (5?4, 4.85) will start for Beloit.

  10. Indianapolis Post-Game Notes: The Indians were shut out, 3-0, in front of 8,072 at Victory Field Wednesday afternoon. Despite stranding twelve runners on base, a season high for Indians? opponents, the Bisons converted their second victory in Indianapolis and are 5-2 against the Indians in 2004. Buffalo scored one run on a bases-loaded single by Ernie Young in the fifth inning, one run in the second on a wild pitch by Indians reliever Ben Ford, and one run in the ninth off of Jhonny Peralta?s home run down the left field line. The Indians, who left nine runners on base during the contest, had a handful of chances to score but came up empty each time. The Indians loaded the bases in the second inning with no one out, but failed to drive a run across. In the ninth, the Tribe had runners on first and second with no one out, but pinch-hitter Alex Delgado grounded into a double play to end the scoring threat. After the game, manager Cecil Cooper commented, "It?s been tough to score runs. We have not executed consistently. We?ve been in a downturn lately but we?ll pick it up. Today, we had a chance to score but didn?t capitalize." Jeff Farnsworth, who had a rough outing in Buffalo, pitched reasonably well Wednesday, giving up one run on seven hits, walking two and fanning three in five innings. Thursday, the Indians sent right-hander Pedro Liriano (3-6, 5.22 ERA) to the mound at 7 p.m. as the Indians conclude their four-game series with Buffalo at Victory Field.

  13. Helena Independent Republic Game Story: Brewers handcuff White Sox By KEVIN SHIVELY - IR Sports Writer The Great Falls White Sox weren't able to make the late-game comeback they did the night before, and the Helena Brewers beat them 6-1 Tuesday at Kindrick Legion Field in Helena. The White Sox, who won Monday's game with a ninth-inning grand slam, were only able to manage three hits on Tuesday. "They bounced back really well from two tough losses," said Helena manager Johnny Narron. "They fought hard and focused the whole game." Helena starter Alvaro Martinez took a few pitches to focus, but once he did, it was lights out. The 19-year-old pitcher out of Venezuela threw balls on his first seven pitches, walking leadoff batter Derrick McNeil and falling behind 3-0 on Ferny Alvarez before collecting himself. He came back to strike out Alvarez and throw five scoreless, hitless innings against the White Sox. Martinez, who collected his second win of the season, struck out three in his five-inning stint on the mound. Brandon Murray came in in the sixth and allowed one run and two hits. He also struck out four. Justin Wilson pitched the ninth, fanning two. The Brewer defense only had one error in the game, called against catcher Charlie Lozada in the ninth inning. "We don't count that one," said Narron. "Apparently the bat touched his glove on the swing." The interference call put a second baserunner on for the Great Falls club, but Wilson struck out two in a row for the last two outs of the game. At the plate, the Brewers had nine hits, started off by Gilberto Acosta, who took the first pitch of the first inning for a ride, hitting one of his two doubles in the game. Steve Sollman advanced Acosta to third on a line drive, and Tony Festa singled to drive him home. Acosta crossed the plate three times in the game, twice on RBI from Festa. "We hit the ball really well tonight," said Narron. "Especially with men in scoring position." Adam Mannon collected two RBI in the third inning, on a two-run homer over the left field wall, putting the Brewers up 3-0. Mannon was 2-for-4 for the night. Lozada also had two hits in the game; a double in the second, and a single in the third that allowed him to score on a squeeze play. The Brewers improved their record to 7-4 with the win and are in first place in the North. They will travel to Missoula today to face the Osprey. Josh Wahpepah (1-0) is expected to pitch for the Helena club. Photo by Jon Ebelt IR Staff - Helena Brewer Tony Festa, left, makes it safely back to first base after Chris Kelly of Great Falls bobbles the throw from White Sox center fielder Jhonny Rivera. Festa, who hadn't tagged up, was at second base when Rivera caught the ball and had to hustle back to first. Festa eventually scored on a two-run homer by Adam Mannon. http://www.helenair.com/content/articles/2004/06/30/sports_top/b01063004_01.jpg

  16. Mav wins wind-aided HR derby By DAMIAN SECORE, San Bernadino Sun Correspondent SAN BERNARDINO - The more High Desert's Travis Hinton swung the bat, the more it seemed like he was in the friendly confines of his home park. Precious few balls clear the wall at Arrowhead Credit Union Park, but the wind started blowing out and, well, Hinton, who plays in hitter-friendly Maverick Stadium, knows how that works. Down to his last out in the California League vs. Carolina League all-star home run derby, the left-handed Mavericks first baseman hit four consecutive homers, three onto E Street, to pass Potomac's Tony Blanco and grab the home run title. "This was a big advantage for lefties. The wind was blowing out and I think it's a little shorter to right (field),' said Hinton, the only left-hander in the contest. "I've hit a couple here so I know the park. "I got through the first round and I got tired, and I just tried to stay in my groove. This is awesome.' Hinton, third in the Cal League with 14 homers, improved on his first-round homer total of six with 10 in the final round to beat crowd-favorite Blanco, who hit nine and eight, respectively, in towering fashion in the two rounds. Inland Empire 66ers of San Bernardino outfielder T.J. Bohn was a late add to the eight-man derby and made it to the second round with a little help. As has now become customary with baseball all-star events, rules can change on the fly. The top four hitters were to advance to the second round. Bohn hit four, good enough for a tie for fifth, but he suddenly found himself among the top six going to the final round. "That was nice,' said Bohn, who will be promoted to Double-A San Antonio today. "It was a lot of fun. I did all right.' Hitters had 10 outs (every swing that didn't result in a homer was considered an out) to work with in the first round and five in the second. Preceding the long ball exhibition was an outfield accuracy contest. Six players had five throws each from left field to hit three pylons at home plate. There also was a catcher accuracy contest five catchers had five throws each from home plate, aiming at the same pylons at second base. Lancaster outfielder Jarred Ball, added to the All-Star Game as an alternate after Conor Jackson was promoted to Double-A El Paso, hit the stack on 2-of-5 attempts to win the outfield throwing event. "I guess it's pretty good,' said Ball, drafted by Arizona in the ninth round in 2001. "It's real fun. My family is in town so I probably would've been with them (had I not been here). We'd probably go to L.A., go to the beach or something.' The catcher accuracy event went to two playoffs before Myrtle Beach's Brian McCann beat out Modesto's John Suomi in a sudden-death playoff. Both players hit the pylons on 4-of-5 attempts in Round 1 and 2-of-5 in Round 2. Sixers catcher Rene Rivera was 1-of-5 and Rancho Cucamonga's Mike Napoli 2-of-5. "Going to the last playoff was kind of interesting,' said McCann, a second-round pick by Atlanta and rated the No.7 prospect in the Braves organization. "I wanted to get in the home run derby. I got snubbed.'
  17. Wonderful news here -- San Bernadino Sun coverage: All-star performance Mavericks' Hinton steals show By MICHELLE GARDNER, Staff Writer SAN BERNARDINO - High Desert first baseman Travis Hinton might be one of the best kept secrets in the California League. He has solid statistics, but plays for one of the worst teams in the league. Playing in remote Adelanto doesn't lend itself to getting recognition either. But Hinton's contribution loomed largest as the California League downed the visiting Carolina League team in the eighth annual all-star game Tuesday in front of 4,765 fans at Arrowhead Credit Union Park. The victory pulls the California League even in the series, 3-3. There have been two ties. Hinton made his first all-star appearance an unforgettable one, going 3-for-4 with two RBI, scoring a run and stealing a base, earning Most Valuable Player honors for the host team. Earlier in the day, he won the home run hitting contest that was the highlight of the skills competition. ``I'm glad to have had a good day,'' Hinton said. ``We had a pretty bad first half so it was good to have fun playing baseball again.'' The California League squad never trailed, getting two in the first off starter Rich Gardner of Potomac. Rancho Cucamonga's Erick Aybar and 66ers' Juan Gonzalez rapped back-to-back singles and both scored on a single by Hinton. It stayed that way until the fourth. Hinton again was in the middle of the action, leading off with a single and scoring on a double by Lancaster's Jarred Ball. Ball later raced home on an infield groundout by San Jose's Dan Trumble. The visitors broke up the shutout against Lake Elsinore's Jon Huber in the fifth inning. Wilmington's Darren Fenster walked and eventually scored on a single by Potomac's Chris Denorfia. The Carolina League team got three hits in the seventh on three hits off Bakersfield's Brian Henderson, but managed just one run after a nifty double play to get out of the inning. Hinton's Mavericks teammate Callix Crabbe tripled home the game's final run in the seventh. ``We both came through,'' Hinton said of his teammate's hit. ``Maybe this will get us going in the right direction for the second half.'' Rancho Cucamonga's Steve Shell got the victory, pitching scoreless ball in the third and fourth innings. Visalia's Mike Cosgrove got the save. Sixers right-hander Bobby Livingston was the biggest contributor of the host team's five representatives. He started for the California League team and tossed two shutout innings, retiring six of the seven batters he faced. The only batter reaching against him was Kinston's Ryan Garko who was hit by a pitch. Livingston struck out one in each of the innings he worked. ``It's really an honor to be able to start the game,'' the Texas native said. ``I love starting. I'm comfortable starting and being able to do that against the best in another league is a thrill.'' The Sixers three position players all started. Gonzalez played second base and went 1-for-2, scoring a run in the second. Catcher Rene Rivera went 0-2, grounding into a double play. And T.J. Bohn, who will leave for Double-A San Antonio today, started in right and struck out in his only at bat. Right-hander Felix Hernandez did not get in the game. He pitched seven innings Saturday and is slated start in San Antonio Thursday. Pitcher Justin Wechsler of Lancaster was the only player on the California League squad who did not get in the game. Sixers manager Daren Brown said he was going to split the last inning between Wechsler and Cosgrove, but Wechsler said he had pitched a lot of innings recently and was alright with not getting in the game. ``It was a pretty good game all things considered,'' Brown said. ``You have a lot of guys not used to playing together but it all went well. All-star games are always fun but it's even better when you win.

  19. Beloit Game Summary from the Burlington Site: The Burlington Bees (3?3, 25?51) beat the Beloit Snappers (2?4, 40?36) for the first time this year as Jeff Barry's walkoff home run in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted the Bees to a 7?5 win at Community Field tonight. The win evened this series against Beloit, although the Snappers have still won five of six on the year. The Snappers scored first in the top of the third inning on an RBI single by Lou Palmisano, but the Bees evened the score in the bottom of the inning on an RBI double by Angel Sanchez. In the top of the fourth, the Snappers got a leadoff triple from Adam Heether and loaded the bases with one out before Bees' starter Chris Goodman's wild pitch brought Heether in to make it 2?1. Goodman got out of the inning when Terry Trofholz flew out in foul territory down the right field line and Bryan Graham threw out Steve Moss at the plate trying to tag and score. The Snappers added a third run in the sixth on a leadoff double by Heether followed by a sacrifice bunt and an RBI double to center field by Manuel Ramirez. Those were the only runs allowed by Goodman, who worked seven innings and left the game with a chance to win because the Bees got one run back in the bottom of the sixth on a solo homer by Mitch Maier and took the lead in the bottom of the seventh with two more runs. Bryan Graham tied the game with an RBI double to center and scored on a sacrifice fly by Sanchez to right. The double knocked out Snappers' starter Brian Montalbo and Sanchez drove in the go?ahead run against reliever Tim Dillard. Montalbo allowed four runs on seven hits in 6.1 innings. Dusty Dossett took over for Goodman in the eighth and gave up two runs. With one out Moss walked and Ramirez doubled. Moss scored on a groundout to second and Ramirez came in as Trofholz ripped a single up the middle that ricocheted off Dossett's glove that put the Snappers up 5?4. The Bees tied the game in the bottom of the eighth when Kila Kaaihue blasted a home run the opposite way to left. It was Kaaihue's seventh homer, tying him with Chris Lubanski for the team lead. Dossett (3?4) worked a scoreless ninth and then in the bottom of the ninth, Dillard (1?4) walked Walter Sevilla to start the inning and after a strikeout, Barry laced a 1?0 pitch over the wall in left for the game?winner. It was Barry's first homer of the year and the first Bees walkoff homer win in at least six seasons. The Bees and Snappers continue this series tomorrow night at 7:00 at Community Field. RH Chris Coughlin (1?1, 8.53) will start for the Bees against LH Dana Eveland (5?2, 3.75) for the Snappers.

  25. Indianapolis Post-Game Notes: Peter Bergeron lifted a two-run homer to right field in the bottom of the 12th inning Tuesday night as the Tribe came from behind to defeat the Buffalo Bisons, 3-2. Ben Hendrickson pitched nine innings, the most this year from any Indians pitcher, to keep the Tribe in the contest as the two teams ended regulation at 1-1. Hendrickson gave up one run on five hits, did not walk a hitter and struck out nine. Hendrickson dueled with Bisons starter Kyle Denney, who gave up a run on two hits in seven innings. In the 12th, Russell Branyan connected on his 18th homer of the season off Matt Childers to give the Bisons a 2-1 lead. In the bottom half of the frame, Bisons reliever Kane Davis struck out Chris Coste, then walked Matt Erickson. Davis then struck out Steve Scarborough before giving up the game winning homer to Bergeron, his second of the season with the Tribe. Indianapolis halted a three-game losing streak with the victory and improves to 37-39. Buffalo falls to 42-36. QUOTE: Ben Hendrickson on his pitching performance: "I felt like all three pitches were working tonight," Hendrickson said. "I worked the fastball in very well. I threw a lot of changeups for strikes. We played good defense and I had confidence in my teammates." Peter Bergeron on game winning home run: "I?m going up to the plate 0 for 5," Bergeron said. "I was just trying to hit the ball hard. I just got a little bit lucky. Just the effort our pitchers put in tonight would have been difficult to lose this game. " NOTES: Following Wes Helms? return to Milwaukee, Jeff Liefer was outrighted by the Brewers on Saturday and has been designated for assignment with Indianapolis. Liefer will join the Tribe on Wednesday. The 29-year-old played in 16 games for Milwaukee and hit .214 with one homer and five RBI. Prior to his promotion, Liefer led Indianapolis in many categories including hitting (.339), home runs (11) and RBI (44). Indianapolis is now 19-18 at home and 3-4 in extra innings.
