  1. Final: Montgomery 2 Huntsville 0 Montgomery scored twice without the benefit of a hit and the Biscuits pitchers made those runs stand up in defeating the Huntsville Stars 2-0 Saturday Night. Huntsville got another quality start from Ariel Pena tonight, but it wasn't enough. Pena (5-4, 3.00) went 6 1/3 innings, allowing 2 runs on 3 hits and 4 walks while striking out 5. The odd thing about both runs allowed was both scored on wild pitches. Pena's wild pitch in the 1st and Dan Meadows's in the 7th. Pena threw 91 pitches over is 6 1/3 innings, 51 for strikes. His ground out to fly out ratio was 3-4. Pena kept Huntsville in the game when he didn't have his best stuff. Unfortunately, the bats were silenced tonight. Dan Meadows was brought in to try and get out of a jam in the 7th. Meadows, learning to be a sidearmer, struggled with control tonight. He walked a batter, hit another, and uncorked 2 wild pitches. It's a learning process for Dan, and on most nights, he's been good. Even tonight, with his struggles, he was able to bear down and get out of the inning without further damage. Casey Medlen came on to work the 8th and pitched a scoreless frame, giving up a hit and walk while striking out 1. Huntsville Box Score Huntsville was shut out for the 7th time this season, being held to only 4 hits. Of those 4 hits, 3 were for extra bases, so the Stars had their chances, but did not come through with the timely hits tonight. Offensively, they were led by their outfield. Right fielder Kentrail Davis. Davis went 2-4 with a double and triple. Kentrail has now pushed his batting average up to .282. Left fielder Brock Kjeldgaard also had a double tonight, going 1-3. Center fielder Rene Tosoni had the other hit, a 4th inning single. Mike Walker and Nick Shaw each drew a walk tonight. By going 0-3, Adam Weisenburger saw his 7 game hitting streak snapped. Team RISP: 0-for-7. Team LOB: 5. BASERUNNING CS: Shaw, N (2, 2nd base by Thompson, J/Thomas, M), Tosoni (4, 2nd base by Thompson, J/Thomas, M). There were chances, just not capitalized on. Huntsville Play By Play What turned out to be the game winning run. Montgomery Bottom of the 1st Kevin Kiermaier doubles (10) on a line drive to right fielder Kentrail Davis. Shawn O'Malley singles on a bunt ground ball to third baseman Mike Walker. Kevin Kiermaier to 3rd. With Mikie Mahtook batting, wild pitch by Ariel Pena, Kevin Kiermaier scores. Shawn O'Malley to 2nd. 2. Final: Montgomery 6 Huntsville 5 (Walk Off Loss) Huntsville jumped out to a 3 run lead, fell behind 5-3 and then tied it 5-5 in the top of the 9th, only to lose in a walk off tonight in Montgomery. Milwaukee Brewers 3rd round pick in the 2011 draft, Drew Gagnon, made his AA debut tonight in Montgomery for the Huntsville Stars. The 12th ranked prospect in the Brewers system had a bit of a rough go of it. Gagnon worked 4 innings allowing 5 earned runs on 6 hits and 2 walks while striking out 3. He also had a costly wild pitch that allowed the Biscuits 5th run to score. Gagnon had 2 good innings and 2 rough innings. 43 of the 67 pitches Gagnon threw were for strikes. His ground out to fly out ratio was 3-5. So there was some good and some bad in there tonight for Drew. The Stars bullpen worked 4 scoreless innings to keep Huntsville close. Santo Manzanillo threw a scoreless 5th, allowing a walk while striking out 1. Next out of the pen was lefty Brian Garman. Garman had an excellent night going 2 scoreless innings, striking out 3 and retiring the other 3 via ground outs. Frankie De La Cruz made his Huntsville debut tonight as well, working a scoreless 8th inning, striking out 1. After Huntsville tied the game in the top of the 9th, De La Cruz (0-1) came out to work the bottom. He allowed a single and advanced the runner to 2nd on a wild pitch. A sacrifice bunt attempt turned into a bunt single to put runners on 1st and 3rd with no outs. A single into left drove in the winning run for Montgomery. Huntsville Box Score The Stars offense was once again led by catcher Adam Weisenburger. Weisenburger collected 2 more hits tonight, going 2-4 with 2 runs scored and an RBi. He hit a solo home run in the top of the 9th to cut the deficit to 1. Weisenburger is now batting .411 and pushed his hitting streak to 7 games. Right fielder Kentrail Davis was on base 3 times tonight. His 2 out, 2 strike single in the 9th drove in the tying run. He also walked twice to push his team leading total to 34 and stole his team leading 14th base. Joey Paciorek got the start at third base tonight and responded by going 1-2 with 2 walks and 2 runs scored. Second baseman Nick Shaw had 2 hits for Huntsville tonight and Mike Walker hit his 6th home run in the 2nd. It was Walker's 2nd home run in as many days. Brock Kjeldgaard reached base twice, a single and a walk. Rene Tosoni was the Stars only other base runner, drawing an eight inning walk. Huntsville Play By Play Huntsville grabbed a 3 run led in the top of the 2nd. All the runs scored with 2 out. Huntsville Top of the 2nd Rene Tosoni strikes out swinging. Robby Price singles on a line drive to left fielder Brock Kjeldgaard. Kyeong Kang scores. Riccio Torrez to 3rd. Game 2 of the series goes tomorrow night. Ariel Pena (5-3, 3.02) will look to shake off a rough last outing as he takes the mound for Huntsville (26-33). Game time is scheduled for 6:35 Central. Stars play by play man Alex Cohen will get things started at 6:20 with the pre game show.
  3. Final: Huntsville 2 Birmingham 0 (Game 2) After Stars pitchers allowed 7 runs on only 4 hits but 11 walks in game 1, Andy Moye shut out the Barons on 5 hits and 2 walks in game 2 to give Huntsville a split of the double header. Moye (3-6, 4.10) went all 7 innings, striking out 4. Of the 93 pitches he threw, 59 were for strikes. Moye's last 3 starts have all been quality starts. Andy had a 9-4 ground out to fly out ratio tonight. Huntsville Box Score Huntsville was limited to 4 hits but were able to have enough offense to produce a win. Second baseman Shea Vucinich had the big hit tonight, a 2 run double in the 4th that drove in the only runs the Stars would need tonight. Catcher Adam Weisenburger continued his hot hitting, going 2-3 with a run scored tonight. Weisenburger, generally regarded as the best defensive catcher in the Brewers system, is now hitting .404. Adam now has a modest 6 game hitting streak and is batting .476 over that stretch. Kentrail Davis was on base twice, a single and his team leading 32nd walk. Huntsville Play By Play All the scoring happened in the bottom of the 4th Huntsville Bottom of the 4th Brock Kjeldgaard hit by pitch. Miguel Gonzalez grounds out, third baseman Mike Walker to first baseman Jason Rogers. Huntsville (26-32) will begin a 5 game series in Montgomery against the Biscuits. Game 1 is scheduled for 7:05. This was Jimmy Nelson's spot in the rotation. Due to technical difficulties, I didn't hear the end of the game or the post game wrap up, so I don't know who will be starting for Huntsville. You can join Stars radio broadcaster Alex Cohen at 6:50 Central for the pregame show.
  4. Final: Birmingham 7 Huntsville 4 (Game 1) A nightmare 1st inning put the Stars in a hole they could not get out of as they fell 7-4 to the Barons in game 1 of Thursdays double header. Stars starter Arcenio Leon (1-4) faced 5 Barons and didn't record an out before being lifted from the game. He was charged with 4 runs on 1 hit and 4 walks. Leon only threw 4 pitches for strikes in 20 attempts. Mark Williams was brought in to relieve Leon. Williams walked 2 of the first 3 batters he faced. Together, Leon and Williams walked 6 in the first inning including 5 in a row. All 4 runs scored on bases loaded walks. Williams settled down and ended up pitching 3 innings, giving up 2 runs on 2 hits, 3 walks and struck out 2. Williams allowed a solo home run in the 3rd. Right hander Brooks Hall made his AA debut in game 1. Hall pitched 2 innings allowing 1 run on 1 hit and 3 walks while striking out 1. The walks came in his 1st inning of work, so it could have been a case of nerves, but he had a real nice 2nd inning on the mound tonight. Thunder Dan Meadows worked 2 strong innings of relief tonight. Meadows was the only Stars pitcher not to allow a run tonight. Over his 2 innings, Dan walked 1 and struck out 2. He did not allow a hit. Huntsville Box Score All 4 of the Stars runs in game 1 scored via the long ball. Centerfielder Rene Tosoni hit a solo home run, his 6th on the season, in the 2nd and third baseman Mike Walker hit 5th on the year, a 3 run homer in the 4th. The Stars were limited to 5 hits. Besides Tosoni and Walker, Nick Shaw, Brock Kjeldgaard, and Robinzon Diaz all had singles. Tosoni drew a walk for the Stars only other baserunner. Huntsville Play By Play That Birmingham 1st inning is just too much to show, so here is Walker's 3 run home run instead. Huntsville Bottom of the 4th Kentrail Davis flies out to left fielder Michael Earley. Jason Rogers flies out to right fielder Keenyn Walker. Rene Tosoni walks. Brock Kjeldgaard singles on a ground ball to center fielder Jared Mitchell. Rene Tosoni to 3rd. Mike Walker homers (5) on a line drive to right field. Rene Tosoni scores. Brock Kjeldgaard scores. Both games will be scheduled for 7 innings. Arcenio Leon and Andy Moye should be your starting pitchers for Huntsville. Don't forget to join Stars radio broadcaster Alex Cohen at 4:28 for the pregame show.
  6. Final: Huntsville 5 Birmingham 1 A night after Stars pitchers tied a season high with 12 walks, Taylor Jungmann and Greg Holle held the Barons to 1 run on 3 hits to lead Huntsville to the win. Jungmann (6-5) went 7 innings, giving up 1 unearned run, on 2 hits and 3 walks while striking out 5. This was Jungmann's 6th consecutive quality start. Over those 7 innings, Taylor threw 93 pitches, 57 for strikes. His ground out to fly out ratio was 9-3. Really solid night for Taylor. Holle made his team leading 23rd appearance tonight. Greg worked 2 innings and allowed only a hit while striking out 2. Holle also had a 3-1 ground out to fly out ratio. Huntsville Box Score Like last night, the Stars took an early lead. Unlike last night, the Stars pitching made it hold up. Huntsville was led offensively by catcher Adam Weisenburger. Weisenburger went 3-4 with a run scored and an RBI on his 2nd home run on the season. Weisenburger's batting average is now up to .388 as the Huntsville catcher group is really shining offensively this year. Rene Tosoni also carried a big stick tonight going 2-4 with a run scored and 2 RBI's. Tosoni hit his 5th home run on the season, a 2 out, 2 run shot in the 3rd that left a mark when it landed. Shortstop Hector Gomez put the Stars on the board in the first with an RBI triple. Gomez is now hitting .375 over his last 4 games. Shea Vucinich reached base 3 times, once on a single, once on a walk, and once on a hit by pitch. First baseman Jason Rogers drove in his league leading 45th run tonight. Every Stars hitter got a hit tonight except for second baseman Nick Shaw, but Shaw did draw 2 walks to tie Kentrail Davis for the team lead with 31. Game 4 will be played tomorrow evening. Right hander Arcenio Leon (1-3, 5.45) will get the start for Huntsville (25-31) against one of the top pitchers in the Southern League, Erik Johnson. Leon's last start was skipped due to the cancellation of a couple games last series due to rain, but he did pitch an inning of relief Sunday afternoon. Game time is scheduled for 6:43 Central with Stars radio broadcaster Alex Cohen starting things at 6:28 with the pre game show.
  7. Not officially announced yet, but mentioned in the Huntsville broadcast tonight, Jimmy Nelson moving on up to Nashville. Well deserved. Nelson has been one of the top pitchers in the Southern League all season.
  8. Final: Birmingham 9 Huntsville 8 Huntsville jumped out to a 3-0 lead early but wasn't able to hold on as Montgomery stormed back to take game two 9-8 Monday night at The Joe. Stars pitchers matched a season high with 12 walks allowed and also committed a balk and uncorked a wild pitch. Ariel Pena started and went 5 innings tonight. He allowed 4 runs on 6 hits and 4 walks while striking out 7. Pena ended up with a no decision tonight. His outing was not as sharp as he's been recently. Still, he struck out 7. 50 of the 88 pitches he threw were for strikes. The 6th inning tonight really destroyed the Stars chances to win. Huntsville needed 3 pitchers to get 3 outs. Santo Manzanillo (1-2) started the 6th and worked 2/3 innings. He gave up 3 runs, all earned on 1 hit and 2 walks. He was relieved by lefty Dan Meadows. Meadows had a night to forget. He faced 4 batters and walked all 4. Combined, Manzanillo and Meadows walked 6 straight. Eric Marzec was brought on next and got out of the 6th. He also worked the 7th. Marzec's line was 1 1/3 innings, no runs, 1 hit, 1 balk. Starter Andy Moye worked an inning of relief tonight. 9. Final: Birmingham 5 Huntsville 1 Huntsville finally got back to playing Sunday afternoon at The Joe but were defeated 5-1 by the Birmingham Barons. After 2 consecutive rain outs, the Stars elected to start Jimmy Nelson on his normal rest. Nelson pitched well but was hurt by some unearned runs. Over 6 2/3 innings, Jimmy allowed 6 hits and 4 runs but only 1 was earned, walked 3, hit a batter and struck out 7. Nelson threw 105 pitches, 61 for strikes. His ground out to fly out ratio was 7-3. Nelson's record fell to 5-4 but his ERA dropped to 2.74. Lefty Brian Garman was brought in to face left handed hitting Andy Wilkins to get out of the 7th inning jam. Unfortunately, Wilkins took Garman deep for a 3 run home run. Garman's line was 1/3 inning, 1 hit, 1 run, 1 strike out. Arcenio Leon pitched the 8th inning and recorded 3 straight ground outs. Leon is still scheduled to start a game later in the series, but as he missed his last start due to the weather, and today is his normal bullpen session day, Manager Darnell Coles elected to use him in relief instead. Eric Marzec was called on to finish the game. In his 1 inning of work, Marzec allowed a walk and recorded a strikeout. 13. Final: Jackson 5 Huntsville 4 The Stars opened their series with the Generals Tuesday night with a 5-4 walk-off loss. Starter Jimmy Nelson was excellent again working a season high 8 innings for Huntsville. Nelson scattered 9 hits over those 8 innings, giving up 4 runs, only 2 earned, walked none and struck out a season high 10. Nelson (5-3) picked up a no decision while lowering his ERA to 2.89. Jimmy threw 104 pitches, 76 for strikes and posted a 10-2 ground out to fly out ratio. As pointed out in tonight's link report, Nelson did pitch 10 games last season in Huntsville and now has 10 starts in this season. Would not be surprised to see him get a bump up to AAA soon. After Huntsville tied the game in the top of the 9th, Greg Holle was brought in to pitch the bottom. Holle (2-2, 4.38) only was able to record 1 out before the Generals plated the winning run. Holle's line was 1/3, 3 hits, 1 run, 1 HBP. Huntsville Box Score Huntsville fought back from a 4-2 deficit to tie the game in the top of the 9th tonight. They were held to 7 hits, but 6 went for extra bases. Offensively, the Stars were led by third baseman Mike Walker. Walker was 1-3 with a walk, scored twice and drove in 2. 14. Final: Tennessee 8 Huntsville 6 Huntsville ended up on the down side of a back and forth game, losing 8-6 to the Smokies Monday night. Right hander Arcenio Leon struggled and was only able to work 3 1/3 innings tonight. He allowed 4 runs, 3 earned, on 5 hits and 4 walks while striking out 2. His error in the 1st inning led to the Smokies first run. It wasn't until the 4th when Leon really ran into trouble. He simply lost the strike zone and allowed 3 runs on 1 hit, 4 walks, and a hit batter. Leon threw 78 pitches, 48 for strikes. Leon's short outing snapped the Stars starters streak of quality starts at 8. Mark Williams was summoned with the bases loaded and one out in the 4th and managed to get out of it on a double play by third baseman Mike Walker. Williams pitched a scoreless 5th as well. Unfortunately, the rest of the bullpen didn't share Williams's success. Santo Manzanillo pitched the 6th and gave up a run on 2 hits and a walk. Santo did strike out 2. Dan Meadows was next. He gave up his first run of the year in the 7th on 2 hits. Stars closer Casey Medlen was brought in to work the 9th of a tied game. Medlen (1-3) allowed a 2 out, 2 run home run that gave the Smokies their winning margin. Huntsville Box Score The Stars offense was sharp with 11 hits, 6 for extra bases, and scoring 6 runs, but it just wasn't enough tonight. They were led by second baseman Nick Shaw. Shaw finished the night 3-4 with his 1st home run of the season. He also bunted for a hit and was credited with a sacrifice. Brock Kjeldgaard had a 2-4 night and temporarily tied Jason Rogers for the Southern League lead in home runs when he hit is 9th of the season in the 4th. That lasted until the 5th when Rogers hit his 10th homer and upped his lead leading RBI total to 42. Third baseman Mike Walker had a 2-4 night. Hector Gomez and Kentrail Davis both doubled and drove in a run. Catcher Robinzon Diaz, who had his hitting streak snapped yesterday started a new one tonight with a single in the 4th. There won't be a Huntsville broadcast tomorrow night as play by play man Alex Cohen need to tend to a personal matter. The Stars are going to try and stream the Jackson broadcast over their broadcast network. We'll make sure to make special note in tomorrow's Link Report about this as well and point to the correct link for those that are interested in listening in.
  15. How was Pena's first option season already burned? He was never on the 25-man, was he? Pena is on the 40 man. He was optioned out of spring training. He's actually used 2 option years as he was added to the 40 man by the Angels 11/18/11 (with Johnny Hellweg and Jean Segura). Los Angeles optioned him out of spring training in 2012 and Milwaukee optioned him in 2013. When cutting down from 40 to 25 to start the season, players, in most cases, are optioned to keep them in the system and not expose them to waivers. The standard is 3 option years. There are cases (Scarpetta and Rogers) where a player can obtain a 4th year usually due to extenuating circumstances.
  16. if i understand it correctly, only players previously optioned to the minor leagues can be recalled, correct? hand had his contract purchased . . . not recalled. i know the terminology can be confusing, so i'd appreciate clarification. Donovan Hand did have his contract purchased as he was not on the 40 man roster. If he were returned to the minors, he would be optioned.
  17. Because the starting options are either hurt or ineffective? Jimmy Nelson is really the only starter at the upper levels of the minors who is pitching well. Ariel Pena has been really good lately. He's already on the 40 man roster. Already used his option year for 2013 so there would be no concern there. His regular start day would be Wednesday though, not Tuesday. Jimmy Nelson's normal start day would be Tuesday, but since he's not on the 40 man, the Brewers would have had to purchase his contract. If he were to be sent back to the minors this year, he would burn an option year. Since he doesn't have to be added until after this season, and this is likely a spot start, better to wait than potentially lose an option year for 1 or 2 starts. I would guess they are thinking longer term with Nelson at this point.
  18. Final: Tennessee 5 Huntsville 2 Despite another quality start from Andy Moye, the Stars fell Sunday afternoon to the Smokies 5-2 in Kodak, Tennessee. Moye (2-6, 4.73) worked 6 innings allowing 3 earned runs on 7 hits and 1 walk while striking out 6. One of the hits was a 2 out, 2 run home run in the 2nd. Moye threw 77 pitches, 56 for strikes and had a 5-4 ground out to fly out ratio. Outside of the home run in the 2nd, Moye really only ran into trouble in the 4th, when the Smokies were able to rally to push a run across. All in all, a decent day for Andy today. Greg Holle was roughed up a bit today in his inning of work. Holle pitched the 7th and allowed 2 runs on 2 hits and a wild pitch. Canton, Ohio native Eric Marzec pitched a scoreless 8th, allowing a hit and striking out 1. Huntsville Box Score Offensively, the Stars were held to 8 hits and 2 runs today. They were led by first baseman Jason Rogers and pitcher Andy Moye, both delivering 2 hits and both doubling. Stars pitchers have a total of 3 hits all season. All 3 are Andy Moye's. Rogers also walked, stole a base, and scored one of the 2 runs with Brock Kjeldgaard scoring the other. Catcher Shawn Zarraga doubled and drove in a run. Rene Tosoni had an RBI on a sacrifice fly. 19. Davis, Jungmann Carry Stars to Victory By Alex Cohen / Huntsville Stars On Saturday night, the Huntsville Stars won their second consecutive game, beating the Tennessee Smokies by a score of 7-2 at Smokies Park. For the second game in a row, it was a pitchers duel early on. Through three innings, Stars starter Taylor Jungmann and Smokies starter Alberto Cabrera kept the ballgame scoreless and combined to give up just three hits. However, in the top of the fourth, the Stars began a streak where they would score at least one run in each of the next five innings. Huntsville third baseman Mike Walker got things started by delivering a two-out, two-run single to score outfielders Kentrail Davis and Brock Kjeldgaard make the score 2-0. One inning later, an RBI groundout from first baseman Jason Rogers put the Stars up by three. For Rogers, the run batted in was his league-leading 40th of the season. After Jungmann surrendered a two-run homer to Smokies second baseman Airsmendy Alcantara to cut the Stars lead to one in the bottom of the fifth, the Stars offense was able to get both those runs back in the next half inning. With runners at second and third and one out, Jungmann helped out his own cause by delivering an RBI safety squeeze to make the score 4-2. One batter later, an RBI fielders choice by second baseman Nick Shaw put the Stars back up by three. As for their final two insurance runs, Huntsville got a sac fly from Kjeldgaard in the seventh and an RBI single from Davis in the eighth to make the score 7-2. The hit for Davis was his fourth of the night, as he paced a Huntsville offense that cranked out double-digit hits (10) for the first time this series. En route to improving to 4-5 on the year, Jungmann gave up just two runs on three hits in six innings of work. For the Brewers second ranked prospect (per MLB.com), the quality start was his fourth in a row, and his six strikeouts on the night were a season-high. Aside from Jungmann, relievers Santo Manzanillo, Thomas Keeling and Casey Medlen each came through with a scoreless inning of work to close out the game. With the victory, the Stars have won the last two straight against the Smokies after dropping five of the first six games in their matchup this season. Huntsville will attempt to win their third consecutive series with a victory on Sunday. The Stars and Smokies will play game four of their five-game series at Joe Davis Stadium on Sunday. Huntsville will send RHP Andy Moye (2-5, 4.76 ERA) to the bump to square off against Tennessee LHP Eric Jokisch (3-3, 3.47 ERA). First pitch is at 2:00 PM (1:00 Central).
  20. Final: Huntsville 7 Tennessee 2 The Huntsville Stars received another strong start en route to a 7-2 victory Saturday night in Kodak, Tennessee. This time it was Taylor Jungmann giving the Stars another quality start. Jungmann (4-5, 4.82) worked 6 innings allowing 2 runs, both earned, on 3 hits and 3 walks while striking out 6. Of the 90 pitches Taylor threw, 56 were for strikes. Jungmann posted a 5 ground out to 5 fly out ratio. Both runs scored on a 5th inning home run. When Jungmann went on the disabled list, he was 1-4 with a 7.89 ERA. Since coming off, he's 3-1 with a 2.16 ERA. The rest seems to have really help Taylor out. The Stars bullpen put up 3 scoreless innings of relief tonight. Santo Manzanillo had the 7th and allowed nothing and struck out 1. Left hander Thomas Keeling was next, working a clean 8th while striking out one. Casey Medlen worked the 9th and also allowed nothing. Huntsville Box Score The Huntsville offensive attack was led by Kentrail Davis tonight. Davis went 4-5 with a triple, scored 2 runs and had an RBI. Davis has now scored 32 runs to lead the Stars and is 5th overall in the Southern League. The other big contributor was Mike Walker. Walker was on base 4 times, 3 times via base on balls, once with a single. His 4th inning single was huge. It came with 2 outs and with 2 strikes and it drove in the Stars first 2 runs on the night. Nick Shaw snapped an 0-14 skid with a single in the 3rd. Shaw also drew a walk, scored a run, and drove in a run. Catcher Adam Weisenburger was activated from the disabled list and had the Stars other extra base hit tonight, a double in the 9th. Jason Rogers, Hector Gomez, and Ozzie Chavez each collected a single as well. Brock Kjeldgaard reached base twice via walks, scored a run and drove one in. Stars pitcher Taylor Jungmann also helped himself out with a perfectly executed safety squeeze in the 6th to drive in a run. 21. Final: Huntsville 6 Tennessee 2 To answer the question in the thread title, yes, Ariel Pena can continue his string of strong starts! "Speedwagon" was tied up in a pitchers duel through his 6 innings of work. He gave up only 1 run, on a 2nd inning home run, on 4 hits and 3 walks while striking out 6. Pena (4-3, 2.77) seemed to get stronger as the game went on as he struck out 4 in his last 2 innings of work. Of the 98 pitches Pena threw, 63 were for strikes. Pena also posted a 4-2 ground out to fly out ratio. Ariel won't be happy to turn the calendar to June. In May, he's 3-1 with a 1.03 ERA (3 earned runs over 26 1/3 innings), 10 walks and 31 strike outs. Sidearmer Dan Meadows worked the 7th and despite a couple errors, worked a clean inning. Because of the errors, Meadows was credited with a 3-1 ground out to fly out ratio. 6'-8" righty Greg Holle pitched a scoreless 8th, allowing a hit and striking out 1. Lefty Brian Garman, who hadn't pitched in a game since May 15th, had things get a little interesting on him in the 9th, but was able to fight through to close out the game. Garman was touched up for a run on 3 hits. Huntsville Box Score Offensively for the Stars, the night belonged to Brock Kjeldgaard. Big Brock was 2-4 with both hits being monster 2 run home runs. One, the scoreboard got in the way of. Stars radio broadcaster Alex Cohen said the scoreboard was 397' out and Kjeldgaard's blast hit about 3 feet from the top! He also mentioned that Brock had family in attendance tonight. I say bring them with for the rest of the season! Kjeldgaard now is 1 behind Jason Rogers for both the team and Southern League lead in home runs with 8. Centerfielder Rene Tosoni got the Stars on the board with a solo home run in the 2nd, his 4th of the year. Ozzie Chavez had the other extra base hit with his 1st inning double. Mike Walker, Shawn Zarraga, Jason Rogers, and Kentrail Davis each had 1 single tonight. Davis also stole his 11th base on the season and drew his 29th walk on the season. The 29 walks is good for 3rd overall in the Southern League. Huntsville Play By Play Rene Tosoni being a 1 man rally Huntsville Top of the 2nd Rene Tosoni homers (4) on a fly ball to right field. Don't forget, these games against Tennessee are available on Milb TV.
  22. Final: Tennessee 2 Huntsville 0 The Stars came up on the short end of a pitchers duel in Kodak, Tennessee Thursday night as the Smokies defeated the Stars 2-0. Stars starter Jimmy Nelson (5-3, 2.98) was awesome tonight. The only blemish on his line was a 2 run 4th. Nelson's final line included 7 innings pitched, 2 earned runs on 4 hits, 1 walk, 1 HBP, 1 home run allowed, and 7 strikeouts. The 7 inning start was Nelson's longest of the season. Jimmy threw 98 pitches tonight, 68 for strikes and had a 7 ground out to 4 fly out ratio. He certainly deserved a better fate. Santo Manzanillo pitched a scoreless 8th, giving up a walk and striking out 1. The game time of 2:21 was the quickest 9 inning game of the year for Huntsville. It was also the 5th time they have been shutout in 46 games. Brock Kjeldgaard made another "web gem" type catch of a fly ball in the bottom of the 7th inning tonight. This is probably about the 3rd or 4th time this year he's made a catch similar to that. He's also had a handful of outfield assists this season. Considering he spent his first 2 years in the Brewer organization as a pitcher, the strides he's made as an outfielder, both offensively and defensively, makes you wonder where he could be had he started out there in the first place. Huntsville Box Score The Stars out hit the Smokies 6-4, but were unable to push any runs across tonight. Robinzon Diaz stayed red hot with 2 more hits tonight. Diaz now has an 8 game hitting streak which has seen him go 14-26 for a .538 average. He has been even hotter over his last 4 games going 9-14, a .643 average. Jason Rogers had the Stars lone extra base hit with his 9th inning double. Rogers now has 13 doubles on the year, good for 3rd best in the Southern League, to go with his league leading 9 home runs and 39 RBI's. Rene Tosoni, Mike Walker, and Shawn Zarraga had the other hits for the Stars. Huntsville Play By Play The Stars came close to breaking through in the 9th Huntsville Top of the 9th Pitching Change: Marcus Hatley replaces Brian Schlitter, batting 9th. Kentrail Davis called out on strikes. Jason Rogers doubles (13) on a fly ball to center fielder Rubi Silva. Rene Tosoni walks. Brock Kjeldgaard lines into a double play, second baseman Ronald Torreyes to shortstop Arismendy Alcantara. Jason Rogers doubled off 2nd. The Stars will look to get back on track tomorrow night as they send Ariel Pena (3-3, 2.95) to the mound. Pena will look to continue his magnificent May. Game time is scheduled for 6:15 Central. Don't forget to join Alex Cohen for the pregame show at 6:00.
  23. At Huntsville, right hander relief pitcher Mark Williams was activated from the 7 day DL to take the spot on the roster after Alan Williams 50 game suspension.
  24. Final: Huntsville 11 Montgomery 7 The Stars string of quality starts continued as Arcenio Leon (1-3) limited the Biscuits to 2 runs over 6 innings as Huntsville won 11-7 Tuesday night at The Joe. Leon, coming off his best start of the season, worked the deepest he has into a game this season by going 6 innings. Over those 6 innings, Leon allowed 2 runs on 2 hits and 4 walks while striking out 2. Leon also balked and threw a wild pitch, as it was not a completely errorless evening. Leon had a 10-4 ground out to fly out ratio and threw 50 of his 88 pitches for strikes. Unfortunately, for the Stars, the bullpen was not as sharp as they've been in the past. All 3 relievers used tonight were touched up for runs. Eric Marzec worked an inning allowing 2 runs on 2 hits and a walk. Greg Holle allowed 1 run on 3 hits over 1 inning. Thomas Keeling saw his streak of 9 consecutive appearances without allowing a run come to an end. Working the 9th, Keeling gave up 2 runs, 1 earned on 2 hits while striking out 2. Huntsville Box Score Fortunately, for the Stars, the offense stayed on the attack all night, scoring in 7 of 8 innings. First baseman Jason Rogers led the attack with another big night at the plate. Rogers went 3-5 with 2 runs scored and drove in 5. Rogers hit 2 home runs, giving him 9 on the season. The 5 RBI's pushed his season total to 39. Both totals now lead the Southern League. Designated hitter Robinzon Diaz had 3 hits, all doubles in 4 trips to the plate and scored a run. Kentrail Davis went 2-3 with a walk, scored 3 runs and both tripled and homered. Brock Kjeldgaard singled twice in 4 at bats. The only Stars hitter not to get a hit was Nick Shaw, but he still contributed 2 RBI's on 2 sacrifice flies. Huntsville Play By Play Lots of fun reading in here tonight. Skip the 3rd inning, that the only inning they didn't score in. Fast start in the 1st Huntsville Bottom of the 1st Nick Shaw flies out to left fielder Todd Glaesmann. Hector Gomez singles on a line drive to left fielder Todd Glaesmann. Game time Thursday is scheduled for 6:15 Central with Stars Radio broadcaster Alex Cohen's pregame show starting at 6:00. This series will also be available through MiLB TV, for those of you with a subscription.
  25. Final: Huntsville 3 Montgomery 0 Andy Moye turned in the best performance by a Stars starting pitcher tonight, leading Huntsville to a 3-0 win Monday night. Moye (2-5) worked 8 scoreless innings, allowing only 5 hits and no walks while striking out 2. 61 of Moye's 88 pitches were for strikes. Moye was up to 95 on the radar tonight according to the Stars videographer. Tonight's performance continues a nice trend of very good starting pitching for Huntsville as of late. And with the pitching comes the wins. After winning their 1st series of the season, the Stars lost their next 6. Now, they have won 2 series in a row. Moye knocked a run off his ERA with tonight's work going from 5.79 to 4.76. Nice! Real nice!! Stars closer Casey Medlen worked a clean 9th recording a strikeout for his 7th save on the season. Huntsville Box Score It looked for a while like the Stars might waste the efforts of Andy Moye as they were being held off the scoreboard as well. It wasn't until the 8th inning that the Stars broke through. Rene Tosoni's clutch 2 out 3 run double gave the Stars all the runs they would need. Tosoni finished 1-2 with 2 walks and those 3 RBI's. Kentrail Davis singled 3 times tonight and Hector Gomez added a single and double, going 2-4. Robinzon Diaz and Shea Vucinich each singled for the Stars other hits. Team RISP: 2-for-10. Team LOB: 8. If not for Tosoni's hit in the 8th, it could be very likely we'd be pointing to these numbers again and wondering what might have been.
