  1. Final: @Brevard County 4, Jupiter 1 Manatees take series opener against JupiterFrank Longobardo/Brevard County Manatees VIERA, Fla. -- Led by seven shutout innings by starting pitcher Kyle Heckathorn, the Brevard County Manatees made it two wins in a row with a 4-1 victory over the Jupiter Hammerheads on Thursday night at Space Coast Stadium. Heckathorn - who went just five innings and allowed six runs in his last start - scattered six hits, struck out three and didn't walk a batter, to earn his fourth win of the season. Brevard County's bats provided run support early as back-to-back RBI doubles by Brock Kjeldgaard and Scott Krieger in the second, made it 2-0 Manatees. The Manatees (17-31) plated another run in the fourth on a double steal after a Shea Vucinich strikeout that saw Krieger take second and Khris Davis steal home to make it 3-0. The 'Tees tacked on one more run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Vucinich that scored Kentrail Davis. Jupiter (24-24) scored its only run in the eighth on a bases-loaded walk given up by Rolando Pascual. Evan Anundsen would get the last out of the eighth and Corey Frerichs shut the door in the ninth for his second save of the season. Kjeldgaard continued his hot hitting as he went 3-for-4 with a double, RBI and run scored. Khris Davis went 2-for-3 with a double, RBI and two runs scored and has reached base in 19 straight games. Brevard County will look to make it three wins in a row on Friday night beginning at 7:05 p.m. against Jupiter. Nick Bucci (3-2, 2.42) will take the mound for the Manatees, while the Hammerheads will send Edgar Olmos (2-3, 4.56) to the hill. Brevard County box scoreNice to see Heckathorn get his mojo back after a string of lackluster starts. He rang up a sterling 13/4 GO/FO and threw 96 pitches and 65 strikes to hit the magic 2/3 ratio. Khris Davis is now hitting .314/.397/.516, very close to last year's line for Wisconsin. It's very impressive that as a righty in Space Coast Stadium and the FSL, Davis hasn't slowed down at all. A slumping Scooter Gennett went 0-4 to drop his line to .272/.311/.304; he has one hit in his last five games. Logan Schafer was 1-4. Shawn Zarraga hasn't played since the 20th. 2. Final (game two): @Peoria 4, Wisconsin 1 (7 innings) Chiefs cool off RattlersChris Mehring/Wisconsin Timber Rattlers PEORIA, IL – The Peoria Chiefs used a four-run fifth inning to defeat the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 4-1 in the regularly scheduled game on Thursday night at O’Brien Field. Anthony Giansanti’s homer in the fourth put the Chiefs in front. Pitchers Hayden Simpson and Eric Jokisch made it stand up and the Chiefs moved past the Rattlers into second place in the Western Division of the Midwest League. Wisconsin (26-21) took the lead with an unearned run in the top of the first inning. The Rattlers had Nick Shaw at second and Robbie Garvey at first with one out and Chris Dennis at the plate. Dennis sent a grounder wide of first base and Chiefs first baseman Ryan Cuneo fielded the ball and fired to second to force Garvey. But, the return throw from shortstop Arismendy Alcantara to try and get Dennis for the inning ending double play was wild. That allowed Dennis to reach and Shaw score. Nelson retired the first 11 batters he faced in the game. Greg Rohan singled to right on an 0-2 pitch with two outs in the fourth, but Nelson retired the next batter to end the inning with the Rattlers still up 1-0. Peoria starting pitcher Hayden Simpson allowed the one run on two hits and struck out seven through five innings. The Chiefs (27-20) rallied in the bottom of the fifth. Micah Gibbs reached on an error on Greg Hopkins to start the inning. One out later, Giansanti lined a 1-0 pitch from Nelson to the grass seats in left field for a two-run homer and a 2-1 lead. Nelson walked the next batter on four pitches, but got the second out. However, the third out proved elusive. Matt Szczur doubled in a run. Then, a grounder off the bat of Pierre LePage went through the legs of shortstop Yadiel Rivera. Szczur scored on the play and the Chiefs were up 4-1. Jokisch came on in relief of Simpson and worked around a pair of walks and a pair of hits over the final two innings to pick up the save. The Rattlers continue their road trip by starting a four game series with the Kane County Cougars at Elfstrom Stadium on Friday night in Geneva, Illinois. Jameson Dunn (0-0, 3.00) is the scheduled starter for the Rattlers. Kane County has Yordano Ventura (0-0, 13.50) as their scheduled starting pitcher. Game time on Friday is 7:00pm. Tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or timberrattlers.com starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:40pm. Wisconsin box score (game two)Nelson's final line: 6 IP, 4 H, 4 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 BB, 1 HR, 8/7 GO/FO. Obviously starting an inning of with an error did him no favors, but I think it's reasonable to expect your pitcher to four outs without allowing four runs. In any case, we're still not seeing any real dominance from Nelson. Shaw, with an hit and a walk, was the only Rattler on more than once. Rivera went 1-3 to raise his average to .158; the error was his 4th. As MH detailed above, TJ Mittelstaedt left with a scary-sounding injury; hope he's okay. Wisconsin play-by-play (game two)
  3. Final (game one): @Peoria 6, Wisconsin 4 (7 innings) Chiefs hold on for win over RattlersChris Mehring/Wisconsin Timber Rattlers PEORIA, IL - The Peoria Chiefs scored six runs in the first three innings to take a 6-1 lead over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers. Peoria withstood a couple of late Wisconsin rallies and held on for a 6-4 win at O'Brien Field. The game, which started on Wednesday before being suspended due to severe weather, concluded on Thursday. The Rattlers (26-20) grabbed the lead on Wednesday on an RBI infield single by Chris Dennis that drove in Reggie Keen from third base. But, the Chiefs (26-20) responded in the bottom of the first against Wisconsin starting pitcher Charly Bashara. Cleanup batter Richard Jones doubled with runners on first and second to drive in a run and tie the game. Ryan Cuneo's flyball to left-center was dropped and allowed two runs to score. In the second, Peoria built their lead to 5-1 on a two-out, two-run home run to left by Pierre LePage. Severe thunderstorms and a tornado warning halted the game after the Rattlers were retired by Graham Hicks, Peoria's starting pitcher, in the top of the third on Wednesday night. The game resumed on Thursday with Brooks Hall taking over for Bashara to pitch the bottom of the third. An RBI single by Elliot Soto put the Chiefs up 6-1. Wisconsin loaded the bases with two outs against Peoria reliever Cam Greathouse in the top of the fourth, but lefty escaped without allowing a run. Nick Shaw pulled the Rattlers to within 6-3 on a two-run double. Dennis followed with a sharp single to right and Shaw rounded third to head for the plate. But, the throw home beat Shaw for the second out. Wisconsin did not score again in the fifth. The Rattlers would score again in the sixth. Greg Hopkins drove in a run with an infield single to make the score 6-4 against reliever Robinson Lopez. A walk to the next batter put runners on the corners and brought the lead run to the plate. However, Lopez regrouped get the final out of the sixth and to set down the Rattlers in order in the top of the seventh to record his first save of the season. Wednesday's game was scheduled for seven innings instead of nine because it was the first game of a doubleheader. Wisconsin box score (game one)Hall's final line: 4 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 2 K, 1 WP, 5/3 GO/FO. Not particularly dominant but at least he was effective. Hopkins joined Dennis with two hits, and Mike Walker singled and walked. Keen stole his 20th base. Wisconsin play-by-play (game one)
  4. If another GM needed Boggs for their MLB team, they would have claimed him on waivers one of the three times he's been on them this year.
  5. Hunter Morris will stay with the Stars awhile longer; from the team: Chattanooga, TN – The Milwaukee Brewers have made a few roster moves that will impact their Double-A affiliate Huntsville Stars prior to tonight’s game at Chattanooga. INF Sean Halton has been activated from the disabled list. Halton was placed on the DL back on May 20, retroactive to May 18. In 32 games with the Stars this season, the first baseman is batting .304 (38-125) with eight doubles and five home runs. He started every game at first base until May 11. In a related move, outfielder Chuckie Caufield has been placed on the disabled list, retroactive to May 24. Caufield is currently batting .265 (27-102) in 33 games with Huntsville. He’s belted three home runs and seven doubles with 16 RBI. With these moves, the Stars active roster sits at 24, the Southern League limit.
  6. Final: @Chattanooga 12, Huntsville 4 Huntsville box scoreWily Peralta gave up nine runs and ten hits in five innings. He's allowed 27 hits in 15.1 innings since having his an infected removed, which leads me to believe that his pitching ability was somehow contained within said molar. Hunter Morris clubbed a double and scored on Brandon Jones' two-run homer. Erik Komatsu went hitless in four at-bats but did draw a walk. Lee Haydel was 1-4. Huntsville play-by-playPeralta spread out the damage against him pretty evenly, only keeping the Lookouts off the board in the 2nd. A lot of ground-ball singles, but plenty of extra-base liners and fly balls too.
  7. Final: @Brevard County 6, Palm Beach 3 Manatees snap seven-game losing streakFrank Longobardo/Brevard County Manatees VIERA, Fla. -- Behind two home runs by Brock Kjeldgaard and a solid outing by Maverick Lasker, the Brevard County Manatees snapped a seven-game losing streak with a 6-3 win over the Palm Beach Cardinals, in front of 2,008 fans on Wednesday night at Space Coast Stadium. The Manatees (16-31) got on the board first in the second inning, first with a one-out solo homer by Kjeldgaard to right field and then scored again on a RBI groundout by Mike Brownstein, to make it 2-0. Brevard County would strike again in the third as Kentrail Davis RBI groundout scored Scooter Gennett and then Kjeldgaard deposited the first pitch he saw over the left field wall for a two-run home as the 'Tees took a 5-0 lead. It was the sixth time in Kjeldgaard's career - and fifth as a Manatee - that he homered twice in one game. The Cardinals (18-39) would get two of those runs back in the fourth, but that would be all that Lasker would allow in his 5 1/3 innings of work. Lasker struck out five, walked two and allowed four hits en route to his first win of the season. Brevard County would add one more in the seventh as Kentrail Davis tripled with two outs and was knocked in by Khris Davis to make it 6-2, in favor of the 'Tees. The Manatees will now welcome the Jupiter Hammerheads into town for a four-game series beginning on Thursday at 7:05 p.m. Kyle Heckathorn (3-4, 4.26) will get the start on the mound for Brevard County, while Jose Alvarez (5-2, 2.65) will take the hill for Jupiter. http://www.minorleaguebaseball.com/images/2011/05/25/r7xFoJZw.jpg Lasker (Dennis Greenblatt/Hawk-Eye Sports Photography) Brevard County box scoreGreat to see Lasker bounce back and have a good start; you'll recall that in his three previous starts he pitched a total of three innings while allowing 12 runs and 12 walks. He threw 77 pitches and 47 strikes. Solid work by Corey Frerichs and Santo Manzanillo in relief; Frerichs went 1.2 perfect innings with two strikeouts, and Manzanillo allowed a run on three hits in two innings but struck out three and walked none. Manzanillo has a 27/10 K/BB in 23.2 IP. Gennett was 0-3 with a walk. Logan Schafer was 1-4. Brevard County play-by-play
  8. Severe storm suspends Rattlers and ChiefsChris Mehring/Wisconsin Timber Rattlers PEORIA, IL – A storm with heavy rain, strong wind, and the threat of tornados forced the suspension of the first game of Wednesday’s doubleheader between the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers and the Peoria Chiefs at O’Brien Field. The game will be resumed on Thursday at 5:00pm. The Chiefs led the game 5-1 through 2-1/2 innings. Just after the Rattlers were retired to end the top of the third inning, the O’Brien Field grounds crew placed the tarp on the field. They got it on just in time. The storm forced the fans in the stadium to be evacuated to the area below the stadium for about 20 minutes. After the all clear had been given, the managers, the umpires, and the Chiefs front office held a discussion. The rain was still falling, not as hard as it had been during the height of the storm, but the decision was made to suspend the game and pick it up on Thursday. The game will restart at 5:00pm with Brooks Hall taking over on the mound for the Timber Rattlers. There will be a second seven inning game on Thursday as well. Jimmy Nelson will get the start for Wisconsin. Hayden Simpson is slated to start for the Chiefs. Additionally, since there was a doubleheader scheduled on Wednesday night, the teams will need to make up the second game of the twinbill when Wisconsin returns to Peoria for a series from June 14-16. Tune in for both games on Thursday on AM1280, WNAM or timberrattlers.com starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 4:45pm.
  9. They drafted him in 2008, so I bet they would.
  10. Timber Rattlers game one suspended in the bottom of the 3rd; they'll pick it up tomorrow. The Rattlers trail 5-1.
  11. Greinke want big boom
  12. Per Tyler Barnes. Wilson has played mostly shortstop in the majors with some time at second and third; he also has a career ERA of 9.00 in three innings. He's hit .227/.280/.315 in 930 MLB plate appearances, so we're talking purely utility infielder material. Stats.
  13. Chris's postgame post notes that injured first sacker Cody Hawn coached first base after regular coach Dusty Rhodes was ejected.
  14. LaPorta and Brantley were used to acquire CC Sabathia, who almost singlehandedly brought the Brewers their first playoff appearance of my life. Escobar was part of the package for Zack Greinke, hopefully yet to write his own legend here. Even Inman, Thatcher, and Garrison were used to acquire Scott Linebrink, who begat Cutter Dykstra, who begat Nyjer Morgan, a useful fourth outfielder. Not to mention that it's too early to write off Gamel, likely our first baseman next year, and to a lesser extent Rogers and Green. It's harder to mentally judge the value of traded prospects, but it's unfair to broadly state that all of the above "flopped".
  15. Final: Wisconsin 10, @Peoria 2 Rattlers score seven in the fourth on the way to a big winChris Mehring/Wisconsin Timber Rattlers PEORIA, IL - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers put a big number on the board in the fourth inning, waited out a rain delay of over an hour, and cruised to a 10-2 win over the Peoria Chiefs Tuesday night at O'Brien Field. Reggie Keen and TJ Mittelstaedt each had two hits, two runs scored, and two RBI for the Rattlers. Mike Walker hit his ninth homer of the season and Brian Garman pitched five scoreless innings of relief for Wisconsin. Peoria (25-20) threatened first as they loaded the bases with one out in the bottom against Rattlers pitcher Tyler Thornburg. But, Thornburg escaped with a grounder back to the mound that turned into a force out at the plate and another force out to end the inning with the game still scoreless. Robbie Garvey started the Wisconsin second inning with a single and a stolen base, but he was still at second with two outs. Keen delivered a two-out, RBI single to plate Garvey with the first run off Peoria starter Su-Min Jung. Nick Shaw was next and he doubled off the wall in right to send Keen home. Mittelstaedt came through with another RBI single and the Rattlers were up 3-0. In the fourth, the Rattlers (26-19) sent 10 men to the plate and scored seven times as the steady rain intensified. Franklin Romero started the inning with a triple. One out later, Tyler Roberts doubled to the gap in left-center to send Romero home. Jung got the second out, but had trouble finding the third out for the second inning in a row. Keen doubled home Roberts. Shaw singled to send Keen to third. Mittelstaedt singled in Keen and sent Shaw to second base. Chris Dennis singled to drive in Shaw and that was all for Jung. Rattlers slugger Walker welcomed Peoria reliever Yohan Gonzalez to the game by crushing a three-run homer over the batting eye in center field. Walker's ninth home run of the season gave the Rattlers a 10-0 lead. A large streak of lightning flashed above O'Brien Field just before Thornburg was ready to throw the first pitch of the bottom of the fourth inning and the umpires called for the tarp to be placed on the field. The game resumed after a delay of 64 minutes. Thornburg did not return to the game on the restart. He scattered five hits and two walks over his three innings, but extended his scoreless streak to 10-1/3 innings pitched. Garman started the bottom of the fourth for the Rattlers and allowed two hits and struck out six over five scoreless innings. The Chiefs scored two unearned runs off Tom Keeling - thanks to three Wisconsin errors - in the bottom of the ninth, but they would get no closer than that. The Rattlers and Chiefs are scheduled to play a doubleheader on Wednesday night at O'Brien Field. Wisconsin has Charly Bashara (2-2, 4.45) and Jimmy Nelson (1-3, 4.50) are the scheduled starting pitchers for the twinbill. Peoria will send Graham Hicks (0-2, 2.45) and Cam Greathouse (2-3, 5.49) out as their planned starters. Game one will start at 5:00pm. Tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or timberrattlers.com starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 4:40pm. Wisconsin box scoreThankfully no Lord of the Rings references necessary tonight against Greg Rohan and the the Chiefs. How about Brian Garman navigating his way to a dominant performance! If you're wondering how a reliever managed to go five innings, Garman was absurdly efficient, needing just 55 pitches, 43 of them strikes. It also didn't hurt that of his nine non-strikeout outs, seven were on the ground. Thornburg threw a fair amount of strikes of his own, 31 in 49 pitches, but for whatever reason didn't miss bats today. Keeling walked one and uncorked two wild pitches. Dennis joined Keen, Mittelstaedt, and Shaw with two hits; Dennis and Mittelstaedt also walked once each. 16. Final: Palm Beach 3, @Brevard County 1 'Tees come up short again to CardsFrank Longobardo/Brevard County Manatees VIERA, Fla. -- For the third night in a row, the Brevard County Manatees' bats went cold in a 3-1 loss to the Palm Beach Cardinals on Tuesday night at Space Coast Stadium. Things got interesting early when in the top of the third with two outs, Manatees (15-31) starter Hiram Burgos hit Palm Beach's D'Marcus Ingram with a first pitch breaking ball. Words were exchanged between the two as Ingram was taking his base and both benches cleared and situation was diffused quickly. Yet home plate umpire Jonathan Bailey ejected both Burgos and Ingram, before any warnings were issued. Manatees pitching coach Fred Dabney was also ejected by Bailey. The ejection forced Brevard County to go to its bullpen early as Mark Willinsky came in and proceeded to give up two two-out runs to give Palm Beach an early 2-0 lead. Brevard County was able to cut the lead in half in the fourth as Cardinals (18-31) starter Joe Kelly walked the bases loaded to start the inning and Shea Vucinich grounded into a double play to score Kentrail Davis. A ground out by Mike Brownstein ended the inning as the 'Tees were only able to manage the one run. Even though Brevard County was down 2-1, the 'Tees were no-hit for 7 1/3 innings by Kelly as the no-no was broken up by a single by Scooter Gennett in the eighth. Logan Schafer then singled to put two on for the 'Tees. But again Brevard County would come up empty as Kentrail Davis flew out to right on a ball that almost got over the head of Rainel Rosario and then Khris Davis grounded into a force out to end the inning. The Cardinals would pad their lead in the top of the ninth, with a runner on second and one out, a routine grounder hit by Patrick Elkins to Brock Kjeldgaard turned into another run for Palm Beach as Kjeldgaard's flip to Efrain Nieves went past Nieves as Palm Beach plated another run. Considering the situation that they were put in, the Manatees bullpen performed admirably and kept Brevard County in the game, as the trio of Willinsky, Jon Pokorny and Nieves allowed two runs (one earned) in 6 1/3 innings. The Manatees will look to end their seven-game losing streak and salvage the series finale with the Cardinals on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. Brevard County box scoreGetting ejected for hitting a batter with a breaking ball is ridiculous. Pokorny had an interesting outing--four hits in two innings, but four strikeouts and no walks. Must have been around the zone a lot. Given his peripherals to date, I'll take it. Khris Davis walked twice; Kentrail did so once and was also hit by a pitch. Shawn Zarraga did not play for the fourth consecutive game. Brevard County play-by-playKentrail Davis was plunked in the bottom of the 1st--perhaps context for the ejection. Though why would Burgos wait until the 3rd, and the top of the order, to get even?
  17. That's not really fair. When we put together the last Power 50, Dennis hadn't yet been demoted.
  18. At Wisconsin, RHP Jimmy Nelson returns to the team from "Helena", while RHP Tyler Cravy goes on the DL, retroactive to yesterday.
  19. More reason for optimism regarding Evan Anundsen: Brandon Revels reports he was throwing 88 last night, which is about as hard as he's ever thrown (at least as a pro).
  20. Final: @Tacoma 15, Nashville 4 Sounds Drop Third Straight, Lose 15-4Nashville Sounds TACOMA, Wash. - The Nashville Sounds lost to the Tacoma Rainiers, 15-4, on the Tuesday afternoon at Cheney Stadium in the second game of a four game set.It was Nashville's (17-27) third straight loss and largest margin of defeat this season. Seven of the 15 runs were unearned, as the Sounds committed a season-high four errors. Tacoma starter Luke French (1-5) tossed a season-high 7 1/3 innings for a quality start, allowing three runs on six hits. Eric Farris put the Sounds on the board first with a solo home run in the top of the third inning. On the second pitch from starter French, Farris belted his third home run of the season over the left field wall. Tacoma quickly bounced back to take a 2-1 lead in the next frame. After Rainiers second baseman Dustin Ackley hit a leadoff triple to right field, Sounds starter Chase Wright got the next two batters out before giving up four consecutive singles to plate both Tacoma runs. The inning ended as Brett Carroll earned his PCL-leading 10th outfield assist gunning out Johan Limonta at home plate on the Sean Kazmar single. Tacoma tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to go up 5-1. The first two batters reached base as Wright walked Joe Yepez and hit Brandon Haveman. Ackley doubled the first run home before Matt Tuiasosopo brought home the second run on an infield groundout. Alex Liddi doubled in the final run of the inning. Tacoma plated four additional runs to extend the lead to 9-1 in the fifth against reliever Donovan Hand. Tuiasosopo singled home the first run of the frame, followed by a bases loaded, two-run double by Liddi. After Hand was replaced by Mike Fiers, the fourth run was scored during a missed catch error by Mat Gamel. Carroll accounted for the other two runs in the top of the sixth inning. After Edwin Maysonet singled to lead off the inning, Carroll's crushed a two run homer over the wall in left field. The long ball was Carroll's fourth of the year. Tacoma unloaded six unearned runs in the next inning that made it 15-3, beginning with RBI hits from Yepez and Liddi that removed Fiers from the game. Reliever Mark DiFelice then came into the contest and offered up a grand slam to Mike Carp, which was Nashville's third in the last five games. The Sounds gave up three all of last season. The Sounds scored their fourth run in the top of the ninth inning off a Maysonet RBI single. Farris extended his hitting streak to nine games. Taylor Green went 0-for-4 to end his season-best five-game hitting streak. Wright (1-4) allowed five runs on eight hits with two strikeouts in 3 1/3 innings for Nashville. Hand surrendered four runs (three earned) in 1 1/3 innings. Fiers gave up five runs (zero earned) in one inning pitched. DiFelice added 2 1/3 innings, allowing one run on two hits. The Sounds and Rainiers continue with the third game of a four-game set at 9:05 pm CT on Wednesday evening at Cheney Stadium. Right-hander Amaury Rivas (3-3, 3.73) will start for Nashville against Tacoma right-hander Blake Beavan (1-1, 5.76). Nashville box scoreTerrible.
