Final: @AZL Dodgers 8, AZL Brewers 7AZL Brewers box score An exciting but ultimately frustrating game. When the Dodgers scored two runs in the bottom of the 8th to go up 8-2, it looked like things were over, but the Maryvale Crew stormed back with five runs in the 9th before coming up just short. Skyler Crawford, who must have been injured because he hadn't pitched since 7/21, started and allowed a run in an inning. Then R.J. Johnson ran into some trouble, giving up five runs in three innings while walking four and fanning none. Big Greg Holle did post a good outing, two scoreless innings with two strikeouts and no walks. Kyle Dhanani had three hits, including a double, and stole a base. TJ Mittelstaedt and Steve Felix each had two hits. Tyler Roberts was 0-4 with a walk. Kevin Berard started his second game at second base. AZL Brewers play-by-play The exciting finish: AZL Brewers Top of the 9th Tyler Roberts walks. Steve Felix singles on a line drive to right fielder Chance Gilmore. Tyler Roberts to 2nd. Demetrius McKelvie singles on a ground ball to first baseman Tae-Hyeok Nam. Tyler Roberts scores. Steve Felix to 3rd. Demetrius McKelvie to 2nd. Throwing error by first baseman Tae-Hyeok Nam. John Bivens grounds out, pitcher Adam Dedeaux to first baseman Tae-Hyeok Nam. Kevin Berard walks. Final: Helena 14, @Idaho Falls 6Hit keep on coming from Brewers in win over Idaho Falls Helena Independent Record IDAHO FALLS, Idaho—The Helena Brewers picked up in Idaho Falls right where they left off in Casper, stomping the Chukars 14-6 Friday night. A night after putting up season highs in hits and runs, the Brewers again registered 20 hits. Helena now has 88 hits over its last six games, which include five straight wins. The Brewers jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the second inning, and even a six-run seventh by Idaho Falls never could get the hosts close enough to do any damage. Helena was just too hot at the plate, with three different players going deep. Catcher Brent Dean had a home run in the second, Franklin Romero Jr. added a solo shot in the sixth and Brandon Sizemore stroked his sixth long ball of the season in the eighth. Greg Hopkins, John Dishon and Rafael Neda all had three hits in the contest, and Carlos George led the team with a 4-for-5 performance. It was the shortstop’s second straight four-hit affair. Stosh Wawrzasek picked up his second win of the season, hurling a two-hitter through five frames and striking out seven. Ryan Bernal earned his first save of the year, giving up three hits over three innings. Jose Oviedo had the roughest night of Brewers pitchers, giving up five earned runs in just a single inning. But the Brewers offense provided all the fireworks for the 2,137 fans in attendance. Thomas Zebroski was the only one with more than two hits for Idaho Falls, going 3 for 4 with two RBIs. Helena box score Man, it's been an all-out assault on Chukars pitching the last couple days. Wawrzasek walked only one and posted a 6/2 GO/AO, so he had a great night. Helena play-by-play

Final: Clearwater 7, @Brevard County 4Brevard County box score Another tough loss for the 'Tees: they had a 4-1 lead, but twin three-run innings surrendered by Mark Willinsky and Dan Meadows torpedoed their chanced. Mike Ramlow did a fine job in a spot start, allowing one run in four innings. The first four batters in the BC order--Josh Prince, Pete Fatse, Erik Komatsu, and Angel Salome--all had two hits. Prince had a particularly good night, adding a walk and smacking a triple; he also stole a base, but was picked off as well. Juan Sanchez had the opposite of a good night, 0-4 with two errors at third base. Brevard County play-by-play

Final: New Orleans 10, @Nashville 3Sounds' win streak halted with 10-3 loss Nashville Sounds NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The New Orleans Zephyrs belted four home runs en route to a 10-3 win over the Sounds on Friday evening at Greer Stadium, snapping Nashville's four-game winning streak. The crowd of 6,397 on hand pushed the Sounds' seasonal attendance over the 300,000-fan plateau for the 10th straight season. The Zephyrs' four home runs on the evening matched their highest single-game total of the year. The bottom of the New Orleans order did the majority of the damage as the visitors' #5 through 8 hitters combined to go 11-for-19 with eight RBIs and seven runs scored on the evening. Right-hander Brian Lawrence (11-8) worked a quality start for the Zephyrs to pick up the victory, holding the Sounds to two runs on six hits over seven innings of work. New Orleans shortstop Brian Barden spotted the visitors a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning with a one-out solo homer to left off Sounds starter Marty McLeary. The Sounds loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the frame but were unable to score against Lawrence, as the right-hander induced a popout from Luis Cruz and an inning-ending groundout from Ray Olmedo. Nashville finished just 1-for-13 with runners in scoring position on the night. Zephyrs left fielder John Raynor made it a 2-0 game in the second when he led off with his second home run of the year, a solo shot to left-center off McLeary. Nashville again had its chance to score thwarted in the bottom of the inning after putting runners on first and third with one out. Adam Stern hit a tapper back to the mound and Lawrence threw to the plate to retire Norris Hopper as he attempted to put the Sounds on the board. The Z's tacked on a pair of runs in the fourth to up their lead to 4-0. Danny Richar and Bryan Petersen led off with back-to-back doubles before catcher Chris Hatcher bounced a one-out RBI single up the middle off McLeary. New Orleans continued to pile on in the fifth, plating five two-out runs against McLeary to chase the right-hander from the ballgame while extending the lead to 9-0. Richar and Petersen contributed RBI singles before Hatcher slugged a three-run longball to right, his second roundtripper of the year. McLeary (6-9) took a loss for the second straight start after he surrendered a career-high nine runs on 12 hits over his 4 2/3 innings of work. The veteran had allowing eight runs in an outing several times, most recently on June 23 at Memphis. Scott Cousins upped his hitting streak to 11 games for New Orleans in the sixth when he led off the inning with his 14th home run of the year, a line-drive solo shot to right off Sounds reliever Donovan Hand. Joe Koshansky put the Sounds on the board in the bottom of the sixth when he crushed his team-leading 22nd home run of the season, a leadoff solo shot off Lawrence. With the tater, Big Joe extended his longest hitting streak of the year to seven games. Nashville got another run back in the seventh when Stern doubled with two outs and scored in unearned fashion when Eric Farris followed with an infield single coupled with a throwing error by Barden at shortstop. Martin Maldonado made it a 10-3 contest in the home half of the eighth when he lifted a sacrifice fly to center to plate Cruz, who opened the inning with a single that greeted Z's reliever Brett Sinkbeil. Infielder Johnny Raburn closed out the contest with a scoreless top of the ninth on the mound for Nashville, making his second pitching appearance of the year. Raburn has posted three scoreless innings for the Sounds this season. Stern (3-for-5) opened the contest with a single for the Sounds to extend his longest hit streak of the year to 10 games, marking Nashville's seventh double-digit streak of 2010. The outfielder is hitting a PCL-best .375 since July 1st (48-for-128). The teams continue the series with 6:35 p.m. meeting on Saturday. Left-hander Sam Narron (8-7, 4.24) will man the bump for the Sounds and face New Orleans spot starter Scott Strickland (4-3, 4.30), who makes his first start of the year for the Z's. The Sounds' final fireworks show of the season will follow the on-field action. Nashville box score Wow, Brian Lawrence! Stern's third hit was also a double; good on ya, Adam. Raburn has now pitched 11 scoreless innings in his career. That's amazing! Mat Gamel was 0-3 with two walks. Nashville play-by-play

Final: Wisconsin 7, @Burlington 3Rattlers beat bees; secure winning road tripChris Mehring/Wisconsin Timber Rattlers BURLINGTON, IA – Chris Dennis homered and drove in four runs to give the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers a lead. Jon Pokorny protected that lead by getting the final four outs for a 7-3 win over the Burlington Bees on Friday night at Community Field. The Rattlers took two out of three games in the series with Burlington and is heading home from a seven game road trip after winning four of those games. Burlington (42-84 overall, 20-37 second half) scored first when Wisconsin starting pitcher Efrain Nieves uncorked a wild pitch with a runner at third base in the bottom of the second inning. Cutter Dykstra celebrated his return to the lineup in style. The Rattlers third baseman was activated from the disabled list in the afternoon. In his second at bat of the game, Dykstra delivered a two-out RBI single to score Dennis from second base and tie the game 1-1. Wisconsin’s bats got going in the top of the third inning. Kentrail Davis doubled to start the inning. One out later Khris Davis walked to put two runners on base. D’Vontrey Richardson was next and he doubled off the wall in right to score Kentrail Davis with the go ahead run. Then, Dennis launched a three-run homer to right-center and the Rattlers (55-73, 29-31) were in front 5-1. Dennis had a hand in the two-run rally for the Rattlers in the top of the sixth. His RBI triple drove in Khris Davis. Cameron Garfield followed with an RBI single and the Rattlers were up 7-1. Nieves stumbled a bit in the sixth inning by hitting the leadoff batter and giving up a one out single that put runners on the corners. Santo Manzanillo allowed one of the runners to score on a wild pitch, but he got the final two outs to keep Wisconsin in front 7-2. The Bees made the game interesting in the bottom of the eighth inning. Fernando Cruz stepped up with two on and two out and singled in a run to make the score 7-3. Manzanillo was touched for another single by Julio to load the bases. The call went to the bullpen for Pokorny. The lefty out of Kent State struck out Gerard Hall looking to end the threat. Pokorny went on to pitch a scoreless ninth inning to earn his seventeenth save of the season. The Timber Rattlers franchise record for saves in a season was set in 1995. John Thompson had 19 saves in the first season of existence for the Rattlers. Wisconsin begins a seven-game homestand with a game against the Kane County Cougars. This is the final Saturday night FOX 11 postgame fireworks display of the season. Saturday is also a Fruit Roll-Ups Fun Night. There will be Fruit Roll-Ups samples for fans 13 and up as they leave the stadium. Game time is 6:35pm and the Rattlers will send Del Howell (3-6, 4.92) to the mound. Kane County has Jonathon Joseph (1-5, 3.35) as their scheduled starting pitcher. If you can’t make it out to Time Warner Cable Field for the game, you can tune in to AM1280, WNAM for the broadcast starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:15pm. Wisconsin box score After Corey Koskie, I'm always relieved when a guy comes back from a concussion in short order, so it's great to see Dykstra healthy. How about Dennis with three triples in his last ten games and seven overall? He also walked; Khris Davis was on base three times as well with three free passes. D'Vo keeps the power stroke going. Scooter Gennett also doubled. Pokorny did walk a batter in the 9th but it's good to see him have a relatively smooth outing. Wisconsin play-by-play

Hawn heating up for Helena as playoff chase tightens Gordon Buchanan/Special to MLB.com Helena Brewers first baseman Cody Hawn knows his team is where it wants to be. They lead Great Falls by just a game in the second-half North Division standings but seem to be getting hot at the right time, winning seven of their last 10 games and the last four in a row. "Controlling your own destiny is where you want to be," said Hawn, a sixth-round pick in 2010 out of Tennessee. "We have to stay behind each other and keep doing the little things right." It's no coincidence that Hawn has also heated up of late. The reigning Player of the Week is hitting a remarkable .528 in his last 10 games (19-for-36) while adding 12 RBIs to his league-leading total of 57. His coach said he's been one of the driving forces of the team all season, and though he is not an extremely vocal leader, his actions speak louder than words. "He is top notch in that three-hole," manager Joe Ayrault said. "He does the little things and makes those routine plays. He's a Scott Rolen-type, the kind of guy who goes out there and works hard, and the other guys follow." It's the little things that Ayrault believes are the keys to his team's recent success. Hot on their heels, however, are the also-streaking Voyagers, who've won five in a row and have a shot to clinch both halves. The Brewers would still make the playoffs if the Voyagers clinch again, assuming Billings doesn't make up three games over the season's final two weeks. Right now, though, Ayrault believes all his team needs to do is continue what it's doing. "There's no reason for us to change anything we're doing," he said. "We have got a good thing going right now." The Brewers, who started the year with nine straight wins, fell off midseason when the routine plays seemed to become difficult and the starting pitching faltered. Now, Ayrault believes his team is getting back to it's hard-nosed philosophies. "We've been getting great starting pitching and just solid defense," he said. "I tell them everyday that they just need to go out and play hard and do the small things." "Everyone has figured out their roles," said Hawn, who leads Helena with 12 homers. "We are getting that big hit more often, and everyone is just clicking." http://www.minorleaguebaseball.com/images/2010/08/27/YHOiTrdh.jpg (Bill Mitchell/Four Seam Images) -

McCalvy: "Was told Scooter Gennett missed 5 days b/c of sore shoulder from a dive, not 'doghouse'" Could have been sustained on the pick-off play at second base he was involved in as a baserunner shortly before leaving the game on the 19th. -
No link, but I would guess it will be out soon enough. Bush was outrighted (to AAA, I assume), which means he's off the 40-man roster. EDIT: Bush has over three years of service time, so he would have the right to refuse an outright assignment and become a free agent. I don't know whether he's accepted it or not.

Final: @Nashville 7, New Orleans 3Sounds top Zephyrs, 7-3, win fourth straight Nashville Sounds NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Ray Olmedo was a triple away from the cycle in the Nashville Sounds' 7-3 victory over the New Orleans Zephyrs on Taco Bell Throwback Thursday at Greer Stadium in the second game of a five-game set. It was the seventh time in the last 14 games that Olmedo produced multiple hits, as the veteran left-fielder went 3-for-4 with a home run and a double while driving in and scoring three runs out of the leadoff spot. Nashville (70-62) has now won four consecutive games and eight of its last 11 contests, temporarily moving to 4.5 games behind first place Iowa in the PCL American Northern Division. The Sounds jumped on the board in the first inning to take an early 2-0 lead. After Adam Stern and Mat Gamel reached base, professional hitter Erick Almonte crushed a two-run double down the left field line to plate both runners as Gamel slid under Neil Wilson's the tag at home plate. In the next inning, Olmedo ripped a two-out double to center, stole third base, and then came home on an Eric Farris infield groundout that made it 3-0. New Orleans got to Sounds starter Chase Wright in the top of the sixth inning, as the Zephyrs tied the contest with three runs. After Mike Lamb walked, Wright surrendered three consecutive singles to bring home the first two scores, followed by a Bryan Petersen sacrifice fly to centerfield for the tying run. The Sounds went back ahead in the next frame at 7-3, scoring four runs off New Orleans reliever Matt Perterson. Luis Cruz smoked a line drive to center to reach base and advanced to second on a Norris Hopper walk. As Stern beat out an infield single with two outs, Cruz quickly rounded third and slid under the tag to score the first run of the inning. In the next at-bat, Olmedo blasted a three-run homer over the right field wall, his fourth long ball of the season and second in consecutive games played. In a no decision, Wright gave up three runs on six hits while fanning seven over 5 2/3 innings pitched. David Johnson (2-1) picked up the win after retiring one batter with three pitches for the second consecutive night, as Donovan Hand earned the victory last night on three pitches. Chuck Lofgren added two shutout innings, while Carlos Villanueva picked up his first career Triple-A save with a shutout ninth frame. In his third start for New Orleans this season, James Houser allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits with two walks over three innings. Jorge Sosa added two scoreless innings in relief. Petersen (3-2) was touched for four runs in one inning for the loss. The Sounds and Zephyrs will continue their series at 7:05 pm CT on Friday at Greer Stadium in the third game of a five-game series. The first 2,000 adults through the turnstiles at Greer will receive a premium Sounds T-Shirt, courtesy of Vanderbilt Sports Medicine. Veteran right-hander Marty McLeary (6-8, 6.82) will start for Nashville against New Orleans righty Brian Lawrence (10-8, 4.83). Nashville box score Listen to Almonte's two-run double here. Congrats to Olmedo; second near-cycle in a week for the Sounds after Cruz almost did it a few days ago. Lofgren handed out five free passes in his two innings but somehow kept the Zephyrs off the board; Villanueva helped, stranding the two men Lofgren walked to begin the 9th. Brendan Katin was 1-3 with a walk. Keep taking ball four, big man. Nashville play-by-pay

Final: Tampa 3, @Brevard County 2'Tees let one slip away Frank Longobardo/Brevard County Manatees VIERA, Fla. - It might have been the most important game of the season for the Brevard County Manatees and it literally slipped away from them as the Tampa Yankees defeated the Manatees 3-2 in front of 1,950 on Thursday night at Space Coast Stadium. With the Manatees up 2-0 after six innings, the Yankees tied the game on a two-run homer by Myron Leslie that was off of left fielder Brock Kjeldgaard's glove and went over the wall. One pitch earlier it looked as if Leslie did not check his swing to set up a 2-2 count with two outs, but the umpire ruled that he held up and he belted the home run on a 3-1 pitch. Tampa would go on to score one more run in the eighth on a RBI single from Bradley Suttle which was ultimately the difference in the 3-2 decision. The reigning FSL Pitcher of the Week, Brevard County's Dan Merklinger was the tough-luck loser as he went 7 2/3 innings and allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits, while walking one. Merklinger tied his career high with 13 strikeouts. He has now struck out 25 hitters in his last 15 2/3 innings pitched. Brevard County had one last chance in the ninth when Juan Sanchez singled with two outs. Josh Prince entered the game as a pinch runner and Peter Fatse ripped a liner to third, but it was snagged by Suttle at third to end the game. The Manatees scored first in the third inning on a RBI single by Erik Komatsu that scored Matt Cline. Brevard County plated another run in the fifth on a RBI ground out by Cline. Sergio Miranda was 3-for-4, while Sean Halton and Sanchez had two hits each. The loss now puts Brevard County 5 ½ games back with nine games to play. The Manatees will host their final regular season series beginning on Friday night against the Clearwater Threshers. The first 750 fans through the gates on Friday will receive a free Manatees hat, courtesy of Viera Hospital. Brevard County box score Merklinger! Wow, 13 K's again, and deserved a better fate. Brevard County play-by-play 10 of Merk's strikeouts were swinging. Tampa Top of the 6th Raymond Kruml strikes out swinging, catcher Sean McCraw to first baseman Sean Halton. Jose Pirela strikes out swinging. Bradley Suttle strikes out swinging, catcher Sean McCraw to first baseman Sean Halton. Tampa Top of the 7th Melky Mesa strikes out swinging. Jose Gil lines out to center fielder Erik Komatsu.

Final: @Mobile 3, Huntsville 2Huntsville box score Two pitching prospects acquitted themselves pretty well, but in between, Jim Henderson allowed two decisive runs for the loss. Amaury Rivas started and was effective, albeit unusually wild: 5 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 4 BB, 6 K, 4/3 GO/AO, 84 pitches, 43 strikes. Jeremy Jeffress entered in the 8th and lowered the boom, fanning all four batters he faced; 13 of his 20 pitches were strikes. Drew Anderson led the Stars with three hits and two doubles, and Anderson de la Rosa was 2-4 with a double as well. Brett Lawrie singled and walked in five trips, Caleb Gindl was 0-2 but walked twice, and Taylor Green was 0-3 but also drew a free pass. Final: @Burlington 10, Wisconsin 3Hayenga snaps two streaks as Bees top Rattlers Chris Mehring/Wisconsin Timber Rattlers BURLINGTON, IA – Burlington Bees starting pitcher Keaton Hayenga ended a pair of streaks in a 10-3 win over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers on Thursday night at Community Field. One streak was Wisconsin’s three-game winning streak and the loss put a halt on the Timber Rattlers charge into playoff contention. The other streak was a personal one for Hayenga, who had lost 12 straight decision, before holding the Rattlers to three runs on six hits over six innings. Hilton Richardson provided four RBI for the Burlington offense. Hunter Morris gave the Rattlers (54-73 overall, 28-31) a quick 1-0 lead. The Wisconsin left fielder launched a solo homer with two outs in the top of the first inning. That was the only point of the game that Wisconsin was in front of the Bees. Whit Merrifield singled to start the bottom of the first inning for Burlington. Alex McClure was next and his two-run homer to left off Wisconsin starting pitcher Maverick Lasker put the Bees (42-83, 20-36) in front 2-1. Burlington would score in each of the first five innings to keep adding on to that lead. Richardson chimed in with two-run single in the bottom of the second. In the third inning, the Bees scored three times. There were RBI singles by Jake Kuebler and Jose Bonilla. Deivy Batista grounded into a 4-6-3 double play with runners at the corners and no outs to plate the third run of the inning. The deluge against Lasker continued in the fourth inning when he gave up a two-out RBI single to Carlo Testa. Lasker lasted four innings on Thursday night. He allowed eight runs on 11 hits, threw three wild pitches, and took the loss. Hayenga had struggled to this point in the 2010 Midwest League season. He was 1-12 on the year. The last time that he had won a game was on May 19 when he tossed one inning of scoreless relief against Clinton. Since that night, he was 0-12 in 17 games. But, he was solid against the Rattlers. Scooter Gennett tripled to start the fifth and scored on an infield grounder off the bat of Kentrail Davis. But, the Bees responded with two runs off reliever Andy Sauter in the bottom of the fifth. It was Richardson who did the damage again with another two-run single – this one with two outs – to put the Bees up 10-2. Chris Dennis tripled to start the sixth inning and scored when he knocked the ball out of the mitt of Burlington catcher Jose Bonilla on a play at the plate after a fly ball to right off the bat of D’Vontrey Richardson. That was the last run off Hayenga and the last run in the game. The bullpens took over from that point to keep the score at Burlington 10, Wisconsin 3. The final game of Wisconsin’s road trip is Friday night. Efrain Nieves (3-4, 5.43) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Rattlers. Matt Mitchell (1-7, 5.18) is set to start for the Bees. Game time is 6:30pm. Listen to game broadcast on AM1280, WNAM starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:10pm. Wisconsin box score Lasker walked one and didn't strike anyone out. The game was such that Rigoberto Almonte's two perfect innings of relief earned him player of the game honors. Great to see Gennett back in the lineup, obviously. D'Vo had a single and a triple and didn't strike out. Khris Davis was 0-4, and Kentrail Davis was 0-3 with a walk. Wisconsin play-by-play

Final (game one): @AZL Brewers 4, AZL Indians 3AZL Brewers box score As MH mentioned, this was actually at the Indians' complex and was the completion of a suspended game from the 17th. Brooks Hall came on as the "starter" and went 3.1 innings, allowing two runs on four hits and fanning and impressive six while walking just one. R.J. Johnson had earlier (like nine days ago earlier) also posted a nice line, striking out three and walking one over three scoreless, hitless frames. The Indians got two in the 8th off Hall to make it close, but Jose Sanchez shut them down in the 9th. Tyler Roberts doubled and walked, and Nick Shaw and Kyle Dhanani each had two hits. AZL Brewers play-by-play The Baby Brewers rode a three-run 6th to victory: AZL Brewers Bottom of the 6th Kenneth Allison walks. Jason Rogers walks. Kenneth Allison to 2nd. Thomas Mittelstaedt doubles (8) on a fly ball to center fielder Henry Dunn. Kenneth Allison scores. Jason Rogers scores. Pitcher Change: Orlando Pereira replaces Enriquez Pacheco. Jeffress could see Majors in September Adam McCalvy/MLB.com MILWAUKEE -- Jeremy Jeffress, the hard-throwing Brewers pitching prospect who finished a 100-game substance-abuse suspension earlier this season, could earn a promotion to Triple-A Nashville in the next week or two and then a subsequent promotion to the Major Leagues in September. Jeffress is already on the 40-man roster. "We've discussed it," general manager Doug Melvin said. "We haven't made any decisions." The bigger decision could be coming this winter, when the Brewers will have to decide whether to keep developing Jeffress as a starter or move him permanently to relief. Jeffress has been working out of the bullpen since returning from his suspension for marijuana use, a move designed by the Brewers to keep him more focused on a day-to-day basis. "That will be a big offseason discussion," Melvin said. "The tough part is, with some of the power-type pitchers, where are they at in their pitch counts? Are they going to get you deep into games? The strike zone up here is tighter. The [hitters] are more selective." So far, Jeffress has displayed an excellent work ethic, club officials say. In his first nine games at Huntsville, he posted a 1.54 ERA in 11 2/3 innings and 11 strikeouts to only two walks.

Final: Helena 6, @Casper 2Helena box score Tyler Thornburg struck out five over five innings, allowing just a single run and hit. He did walk four, but all came in the last two innings; his previous high in innings pitched was three, so the wavering control is perhaps understandable. He allowed a homer and posted a 4/5 GO/AO. Rob Currie and Eric Marzec were very good in relief, the former fanning six and walking none in three innings, and the latter, as usual, tossing a perfect 9th with two K's. Carlos George and Franklin Romero were both 3-4, with George tripling and Romero homering; Romero was also hit by a pitch, so he was on four times. Shea Vucinich and Greg Hopkins added two hits. Cody Hawn was 1-5, and Rafael Neda was 0-4 with a walk. Helena play-by-play Thornburg's last two frames: Casper Bottom of the 4th Rafael Ortega walks. Brett Tanos walks. Rafael Ortega to 2nd. Final: @Nashville 2, New Orleans 1 Sounds win homestand opener, 2-1 Nashville Sounds NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Nashville Sounds kicked off their final homestand with a 2-1 victory over the New Orleans Zephyrs on Wednesday evening at Greer Stadium in the opener of a five-game series. Tim Dillard turned in an outstanding effort for the second straight start for Nashville, twirling seven innings of scoreless, three-hit ball but took a no-decision as the Sounds' bullpen was unable to protect his 1-0 lead in the late innings. Dillard, who has given up only one run over 15.0 innings in his last two outings, is 3-1 with a 2.86 ERA (11er/34.2ip) in six starts for Nashville this season. The victory was the Sounds' sixth in eight meetings versus New Orleans this season and the seventh win in the last 10 games overall for Nashville (69-62). Sounds right fielder Brendan Katin (2-for-3) spotted the home team a 1-0 lead in the fourth with a one-out, opposite-field solo homer to right. The blast, which came against New Orleans starter Wes Whisler, was the slugger's 19th roundtripper of the season. In the top of the eighth, New Orleans took immediate advantage of Dillard's departure by tying the game at 1-1 against Sounds reliever Mitch Stetter. The Z's loaded the bases as the first three runners reached bases before Mike Lamb blooped an RBI single to shallow right-center to bring home Scott Cousins with the tying run. The Sounds escaped the no-out, bases-loaded jam with no further damage. Stetter struck out Mark Saccomanno and Danny Richar in succession before Donovan Hand was summoned to the mound. With Brett Carroll at the plate, the right-hander's 0-2 offering was in the dirt and briefly skirted Sounds catcher Martin Maldonado but the backstop recovered to toss to Hand to retire Bryan Petersen at the dish on a bang-bang play for the third out. Nashville pulled back in front in the bottom of the eighth with a run against Z's reliever Dan Meyer (1-2) as the left-hander hurt his own cause with inaccuracy on the hill. With one out, Erick Almonte drew a walk then Katin was hit by a pitch. After a Meyer wild pitch moved the runners to second and third, Luis Cruz lined a sacrifice fly to left to plate Almonte with the go-ahead run. Brandon Kintzler retired the Zephyrs in order in the top of the ninth to preserve the lead and notch his fifth save of the year for Nashville. Hand (2-0) was handed the victory following his three-pitch relief effort for the Sounds. Whisler matched Dillard's solid start with one of his own for New Orleans, limiting the Sounds to one run on six hits over seven innings in a no-decision. The teams continue the series with another 7:05 p.m. matchup on Thursday. Left-hander Chase Wright (7-8, 4.95) will toe the rubber for the Sounds and face New Orleans southpaw James Houser (0-1, 3.60). Nashville box score Wait, what? Is Greer Stadium no longer historic? Listen to Cruz's sac fly here. It was the usual Kintzler outing--perfect with one strikeout. Mat Gamel was 0-3 with a HBP. Nashville play-by-play -

BC powers past Yanks in first game Frank Longobardo/Brevard County Manatees VIERA, Fla. - Six runs in the third inning were all that the Brevard County Manatees needed in the first game of a doubleheader against the Tampa Yankees in a 8-3 victory on Wednesday evening at Space Coast Stadium. The inning was highlighted by two home runs from the Manatees. Erik Komatsu hit a two-run homer, his fifth of the season and Shawn Zarraga had a full count on him when he deposited a ball over the left field fence for a three-run homer. A six-run cushion was all that Manatees starting pitcher Kyle Heckathorn needed as he threw a seven-inning complete game allowing just one earned run on eight hits, while striking out five. Five Brevard County hitters had multi-hit games. Zarraga led the way by going a perfect 3-for-3, while Komatsu, Sergio Miranda, Angel Salome and Sean Halton all had two hits each. Both Zarraga and Komatsu drove in three runs. ============================ Tampa tops 'Tees in game two Frank Longobardo/Brevard County Manatees VIERA, Fla. - In the second game of Wednesday night's doubleheader, the Brevard County Manatees looked to pull to within 2 1/2 games of the first place Tampa Yankees. That did not happen as the Manatees fell 5-3 in the second game to split the twin-bill with the Yankees. The Manatees (61-68 overall, 34-26 second half) jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first, highlighted by a two-run homer from Sergio Miranda. But Tampa (73-52, 37-20) would put four on the board against Brevard County starting pitcher Cody Scarpetta in the second, chasing him from the game after just 1 2/3 innings. Unlike game one of the doubleheader the Manatees bats went cold, as they managed just two hits after the first inning of game two. Trey Watten pitched well in relief of Scarpetta as he went 3 1/3 innings and allowed just one unearned run and three hits. By splitting the doubleheader, the Manatees are back where they started Wednesday night - 4 1/2 games back of Tampa for first place in the North Division. Brevard County will try and pick up a game on the Yankees in the series finale on Thursday night beginning at 7:05 p.m. at Space Coast Stadium. The reigning Florida State League Pitcher of the Week, Dan Merklinger (7-5, 3.71) is scheduled to take the mound for the Manatees. The Yankees will counter with Graham Stoneburner (8-4, 2.52). Thursday night's game at Space Coast Stadium will be Military Appreciation Night and all active and retired military will get tickets for just $3! Military personnel who come to the game in uniform will get in free! It will be Thirsty Thursday, so start the weekend early with Thirsty Thursday drink specials - 20-oz Coca-Cola and 18-oz Budweiser products are just $2.00! Final: Wisconsin 7, @Burlington 4Rattlers win third straight Chris Mehring/Wisconsin Timber Rattlers BURLINGTON, IA – The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers continued their late season roll with a 7-4 victory over the Burlington Bees on Wednesday night. Michael Marseco drove in three runs and Adrian Rosario go the final four outs to nail down Wisconsin’s third consecutive victory. Marseco started the scoring for the Rattlers (54-72 overall, 28-30 second half). The bases were loaded with two outs in the top of the second and the shortstop snuck a single through the middle of the diamond to score a pair of runs. Later in the frame, Kentrail Davis drew a bases-loaded walk to force in a run for a 3-0 lead. Wisconsin added to their lead with a pair of runs in the third inning. Austin Stockfisch doubled in a run. He scored from third later in the inning when Marseco beat out an infield single and Wisconsin had a 5-0 advantage. Burlington (41-83, 19-36) chipped away with a single runs in the third and fourth innings against Wisconsin starting pitcher Hiram Burgos. But, the Rattlers got both of those runs back with two runs in the top of the sixth. D’Vontrey Richardson doubled to start the inning. Kentrail Davis tripled Richardson home. Then, Hunter Morris singled to knock in Davis and the Rattlers went back up by five runs. Burgos had two outs and a runner at first in the bottom of the sixth, but gave up consecutive RBI doubles to Jake Kuebler and Ben Theriot to let Burlington back to within 7-4. The Bees got a leadoff single in the bottom of the seventh off Burgos and Wisconsin went to the bullpen. Reliever Matt Costello entered and got Fernando Cruz to hit into a double play on the first pitch he threw. After a walk, Costello got the final out with a strikeout. In the eighth, the Bees got the leadoff man aboard on an error. Costello got the next two batters to ground into force outs at second. But, he would walk Theriot to bring the tying run to the plate. Rosario, who got the final three outs of the combined no-hitter in Cedar Rapids on Tuesday night, came out of the bullpen again on Wednesday night and did the job. The righty struck out Jose Bonilla to extinguish the Burlington threat in the eighth. Then, Rosario pitched a 1-2-3 ninth with a pair of strikeouts for his second save in as many nights. The series continues on Thursday night at Community Field. Maverick Lasker (7-4, 3.86) is the scheduled starting pitcher for Wisconsin. Burlington will counter with Keaton Hayenga (1-12, 6.75). Game time is 6:30pm. Tune in for the play-by-play action on AM1280, WNAM starting with the Miller Lite Pregame show at 6:10pm. Wisconsin box score Burgos only struck out one, but walked none; he also posted an excellent 12/4 GO/AO. D'Vo, Ke. Davis, and Chris Dennis all had the power/patience game going with a extra-base hit and a walk (two in Dennis's case). Dennis even stole a base for fun, his eighth. Khris Davis was 0-4 with a walk and three punch-outs, and of course the Scooter Gennett watch continues. Adrian Rosario has quietly (well, until yesterday, maybe) been pretty good in relief for the Rattlers. Wisconsin play-by-play -

Final (game two): Tampa 5, @Brevard County 3 (7 innings)Brevard County box score It's already detailed above, but neither birthday boy Cody Scarpetta nor former Brewers farmhand Josh Romanski pitched well. Trey Watten came on for Scarpetta and Wattened up the place: 7/1 GO/AO in 3.1 innings of work. Sergio Miranda cracked a two-run homer, and Erik Komatsu was 1-3 with a walk. Juan Sanchez threw out a runner at home, just as he did in the first game. I'm guessing Sanchez misplayed this ball initially, and though the outfield assist did prevent the inside-the-park homer, the play as a whole probably cost the 'Tees a run. Given the fielding adventures that bookended it, must have been a frustrating stretch for Watten: Tampa Top of the 4th Trent Lockwood grounds out, second baseman Matt Cline to first baseman Sean Halton. Raymond Kruml reaches on fielding error by first baseman Sean Halton. Raymond Kruml to 2nd. Jose Pirela triples (13) on a line drive to right fielder Juan Sanchez. Raymond Kruml scores. We have a Periard sighting! Started tonight for the Arizona Brewers and gave up four runs while only recording one out, but hey, at least he's healthy enough to go. -
