  1. I’d rather spend half the money on Santana. I’m still mad at the Mariners for not giving him a contract last year.
  2. CC probably changed his mind about retiring when he realized he can make more than his entire 13 year playing career from a 4 year managerial contract.
  3. That is still a thing???
  4. I think he would get 2-year contract offers from other teams, possibly for more money than we're willing to offer. Assuming he wants to continue rehabbing with the same organization, that should give the Brewers a leg up. Nobody is going to offer him a 1-year deal, including us, and he would be crazy to sign for anything beyond 2 years.
  5. 2-year makes so much sense for both parties that I can't see it not happening.
  6. I went down there to see the Bucks play Portland in 2020. It was an easy blowout win for the Bucks and Giannis certainly shined, but what I remember most about that game is how absurdly good Dame was. The ceiling for the Bucks for the next 3 years is equivalent to Shaq and Kobe together at their prime.
  7. The Hawks are certainly going to get better, but I LOLed when I watched some of the opener and saw Ryan Donato out there with Bedard and Hall. Clearly they have some work to do to build a team around their star. Nice to hear that the Badgers are doing well, I'll have to tune in if they are on BTN.
  8. I agree that they need to reduce off days in the postseason. Other leagues have figured out that you don't need to pre-schedule the entire postseason. There's nothing wrong with one league being ahead of the other if there are sweeps. The NBA often has games different rounds occurring simultaneously. They also need to start the postseason on October 1. If we've accepted that we're never going to drop below 162, then schedule a few doubleheaders.
  9. I don't care how big the playoff field is as long as they play 7 game series from the DS onward. It's far, far, far past time to make the division series best of 7. I don't really care about the wild card rounds, they can let as many teams in as they want as long as they stop letting the top teams get eliminated in 3 games. What Philly was doing in the early rounds was clearly unsustainable. Pure home run derby. Didn't they score something like 17 straight runs off of home runs? In a 3-game or 5-game series you can sometimes get away with that, but the D'backs to their credit starting pitching around the top heavy portion of that lineup and nobody else could pick up the slack. Especially when the pressure was on to get that last win. We got robbed out of PHI-ATL not being a 7-game series, things might have gone differently if that was the case. The Diamondbacks played better baseball, period. They had better at-bats, they manufactured runs, they played nearly perfect defense, and they had a huge, huge advantage at the back end of the bullpen. Paul Sewald throwing 8 scoreless innings with 6 saves is the type of postseason that we have dreamed about with either Hader or Williams. Making that trade at the deadline was undoubtedly the move that put them over the top. And Texas make a big effort to improve at the deadline as well, even if Scherzer hasn't done much. You need your Sept/Oct roster to be considerably better than your April/May roster.
  10. This is beautiful to watch, what a way for the cheaters to go out.
  11. Wait, is there a narrative by non-Astros fans that paints this guy as something less than a hero?
  12. New townhomes here in the Seattle area are going for roughly $500/sq ft. There are some near me that are $600K for 1200 sq ft which is the lowest price you'll find to purchase just about anything that isn't a dump within a 45 minute commute of downtown. They make really great starter homes. No yard but they usually have a rooftop deck which people like better anyway. There are plenty of parks, most people see a yard as more of a burden than a benefit anyway. The price was totally fine when rates were 3-4% so you could get that for somewhere around $3,000/month or even below that if you put some money down. Now it's more like $4,500/month which makes it really hard to afford.
  13. I mostly object to the amount of money. It's absurd. Seattle was in a nearly identical situation in 2018 and they signed a 20-year extension in exchange for $135 million in public funding. The suggestion that the Brewers somehow bring in $500+ million of economic benefit to the state is comical. Governments need to get out of stadium ownership entirely. The fact that the Brewers would not take AmFam field if it was offered to them for free tells you all you need to know. They are money pits. Unfortunately, cities like Milwaukee are a dime a dozen from the perspective of major sports leagues. There's always another one to threaten to move to. If the Brewers went to Nashville, the White Sox to Milwaukee rumors would start immediately and I would say the odds would be nearly 50/50 that the White Sox would be playing in Milwaukee within 10 years. Assuming the state once again offered a juicy package of public dollars of course.
  14. My grandparents' old home in the Milwaukee area is owned by an investment company now. My parents get constant requests to buy their house for cash. Once the home is owned by one of those groups it is off the market forever, As they grow their power to purchase additional homes will only grow with time, as well as their ability to influence rental prices. They mostly work in markets with low housing prices like Milwaukee and especially in lower income neighborhoods like where my grandparents lived.
  15. This team will sleepwalk to 50 wins. They don't need to care about defense until next April. Until then they can get used to playing together with the new coach and having fun. Giannis and Dame are going to have a LOT of fun together.
  16. It's completely the opposite in many places, particularly large coastal cities. Cities tend to have the most housing growth because they can grow upward. Suburbs have exclusionary zoning and face resistance to upzoning and have nowhere to build (without causing traffic/infrastructure problems). At first this caused single-family home prices within cities to go through the roof because they have the most limited supply of all, but recently the suburbs have caught up, especially after there was added demand away from cities during the pandemic -- although people have obviously held onto their purchases even if they have moved back to cities.
  17. It turns out that spending big money in free agency does work, assuming you spend it on the right guys and compliment what you already have.
  18. It's tricky to speculate what rates will be like in 3-5 years, but I think we can be fairly confident that if rates do go down, housing prices are going to shoot up again. The nationwide housing shortage isn't going anywhere. The best time to buy is in the past and the second best time to buy is right now (if you can afford the monthly payments).
  19. They can get quite a bit worse and still make the playoffs. Presumably the Reds will be a hot pick to win the Central in 2023 but that's far from certain and the wild cards will be sitting there for the taking. Building a team with an upper-80s win ceiling isn't the worst idea in the world, especially if it depends on someone like Chourio coming up and having an immediate impact similar to Julio Rodriguez and Corbin Carroll. I'm still in favor of trading Burnes, I think can make the playoffs anyway.
  20. This isn't a pretty situation. They shouldn't offer Woody arbitration if he isn't going to pitch in 2024. But it would suck to release someone of his caliber who is rehabbing. I agree with the idea to offer 2/25. The Brewers have some leverage here so it might not even take that much cash.
  21. Yeah we were well-positioned for another NLCS run if we had drawn the Marlins. Unfortunately I think the NLCS was probably our ceiling after Woodruff went out and the inevitability of running into either the Phillies or the D'backs in the NLCS.
  22. Most of the complaints sound like whining from the big markets. Out of the 4 teams in the LCS, the Diamondbacks are the only one that are a true surprise to anyone paying attention, and the Dodgers put up such a pathetic performance in the NLDS that nobody in their right mind would expect them to have won a series of any length against the Diamondbacks. They cobbled together a pitching rotation and then failed to score off Brandon Pfaadt. The thing about playing 162 games is that it's been a long, long time since April and May. If you ask the Texas Rangers, I bet they would say it's been a long, long time since their inexplicable collapse in August. And the two defending league champions advanced, both of which returned basically the same teams that won the pennant last year. On what planet is either of those two teams winning an upset???
  23. Congrats!
  24. I think they have changed their approach at the plate in the postseason.
  25. My main issue is that the quality of the postseason baseball is really, really bad this year. It's little more than home run derby and most of the games have been blowouts. Phillies/Braves game 2 is the only DS game that was any good. The Brewers/D-Backs wild card were actually pretty good as well, but not a single wild card series even made it to the third game. I don't even think juiced baseballs are to blame -- it's just the natural response to bullpen optimization. Nobody will ever be able to string hits together, so everybody waits for the one mistake pitch that they can hit for a home run. Occasionally somebody comes in who can't pitch and you get like 4-6 runs scored in a span of like 5 minutes, then nothing for the next 2+ hours. The solution to this is to deaden the baseball, but nobody is ever going to allow that to happen.
