  1. You forgot Alfred on the side of the good. Considering there's only like 4 non-white characters of any significance, Gordon, Selina, the new mayor, and the officer Martinez, I think people are making a leap. Gordon and Selina are pretty true to their characters in the comics. And Gotham has been notorious for corruption going back to the 70s.
  2. Does your friend watch Fox news? There's like one line in the film where Zoe Kravitz's Catwoman says something along the lines that the privileged don't care about the little people. And I suppose that the Riddler's plot evolves into QAnon territory. But, otherwise, it's basically the same type of gritty Batman story that they've been doing on and off in the comics since the 1970s, with heavy influence from Year One and The Long Halloween, with big doses of Se7en and Zodiac mixed in.
  3. I saw it in a theater at 10 AM on a Sunday opening weekend with people who knew what they were getting into. I thought it was great. People would probably complain that Excalibur is slow these days.
  4. FWIW, HBO Max is going to have 5 of the 10 BP nominees on the service in March. So, if you're curious to check them out, that seems like a good bet.
  5. And for something available now, I thought Soderbergh's KIMI on HBO Max was a refreshing throwback thriller combining REAR WINDOW, THE CONVERSATION, and BLOW OUT in a relevant story. Zoe Kravitz is very solid as the lead and I appreciated that it was a nice lean 90 minutes.
  6. DRIVE MY CAR is showing up on HBO Max on March 2nd. It gets my highest recommendation. WEST SIDE STORY is showing up on HBO Max and Disney+ early March as well. I think LICORICE PIZZA is the last Best Picture nominee without an announced streaming date.
  7. So, it's trying to do a modern version of RASHOMON. Interesting.
  8. It's probably on the bubble, but DRIVE MY CAR is playing at the Oriental and it's excellent. (Janus is distributing it, so it's likely to end up on Criterion ultimately.) LICORICE PIZZA is also still in theaters. As are WEST SIDE STORY and HOUSE OF GUCCI, although I can't imagine for too much longer. BELFAST is available for VOD rental, albeit at $19.99 I'm holding out for a bit. DUNE is my favorite blockbuster of the year. It's widely available for rent although it will probably be back on HBO Max before the Oscars. Same with KING RICHARD. CODA is on Apple+, although I think it's a long shot. Be aware that THE LOST DAUGHTER is not a thriller. And Olivia Colman/Jessie Buckley do things that makes the character unlikable even if you understand why. BEING THE RICARDOS, which I don't think works despite some valiant efforts, is on PRIME. I think AMC still does the Best Picture marathon thing.
  9. I watched THE POWER OF THE DOG this weekend. I understand what the hype is about. It's probably the best Cumberbatch has been in a film. And Campion's direction is immaculate. It's an ice cold slow burn, and delivers.
  10. So you're through all the "8" movies? lol I'm into the "A" movies, all my number movies have been viewed and reviewed. Kept some, dumped some, but I'm still chugging along. It will literally be years before I get through them all, but with retirement coming in June, I'll have the time... Did you skip the best of the 8 movies, 8 1/2?
  11. So, I had the opportunity to view an early screener of the Japanese film DRIVE MY CAR that's been showing up on a lot of Best of 2021 lists. It also show up on mine, right near the top. It is a quiet, character based drama that runs 3 hours. And the time just flew right along I was so wrapped up in the story.
  12. I'll just add that a lot of DVD players have inputs if you don't have room on the tv.
  13. Jungle Cruise is pretty much the definition of "less than the sum of its parts" movies. Especially as it's rather shameless about stealing from other better films. It's good enough to be worth a watch. But once the new car shine wears off, I don't know why you'd ever rewatch it when you have the likes of The African Queen, The Mummy, Romancing the Stone, Indiana Jones, and PotC right there for the picking.
  14. A much more energetic type of insanity certainly.
  15. While I wouldn't call it necessarily "must see", the final 30 minutes or so of Malignant are as bat guano insane as anything I've seen in years, if not decades.
  16. I guess we're mostly through what there is of the summer movie season, cut down by the Delta variant. And a string of movies that weren't that compelling. The Green Knight I thought was really terrific. If you're in English lit mode rather than action adventure mode. It's certainly deliberately paced, but gorgeous, well acted, and has a lot on its mind. I was only vaguely aware of the poem, but it makes me want to read it. I thought The Suicide Squad was a lot of fun. Perhaps a little too much reliance on swearing and shocking kills, but likable characters, a weird big bad, and just enough social/political commentary to engage with. Black Widow I thought was good, but clearly a lesser version of Winter Soldier with the main character kind of sidelined in favor of the new characters coming up. This also feels a few years too late. I enjoyed it, but it's definitely mid-tier Marvel. Luca deserved a theatrical release. I really enjoyed In the Heights, but I'd agree with the criticism that it's too long. Summer of Soul and The Sparks Brothers were super musical documentaries. Highly recommended.
  17. I've seen all but Minari and The Father and will probably try to catch at least one of those two before the Oscars. Of the nominees I've seen, I liked Nomadland the best. And Mank the least. But I don't have too strong a feeling if someone pulls an upset on Nomadland. I think this is a fairly typical set of nominations for a year when there's not a blockbuster contender. And I think the year was always destined to be that way as I have doubts about West Side Story. And Dune is likely too esoteric. I don't think any of the comic book movies or Bond was an awards contender. I suppose In the Heights may be. But, I think this was always going to be a year that resembled the Independent Spirit Awards. What disappointed me most was how conservative the Academy was in a year when all the usual rules were out the window. Why not the last theatrical hit, The Invisible Man? Or a clever funny film like Palm Springs? Or one of the drive in hits like The Vast of Night? The Oscar industrial complex just kept grinding away with no regard to the world around it.
  18. Judging by the tv thread, there are a bunch of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul fans on the site. I'd recommend that you check out Nobody when it hits your price point. Odenkirk is a surprisingly compelling action hero, and he elevates the material, which is at least partly about responding to emasculation. It's kind of the dark comedy version of A History of Violence with more than a dash of John Wick.
  19. I love the power of just ending a streaming service with a few clicks. I die a little bit every time I've had to speak with cable "customer service". Never has it been so hard not to give someone money.
  20. Last weekend was probably the weekend of the year with Palm Springs, The Old Guard, and Greyhound debuting on streaming and First Cow hitting digital purchase. Heck, I heard good things about The Relic as well. FWIW, Palm Springs is very good.
  21. Apparently Jurassic Park and Jaws were the #1 and #2 films at the box office over the weekend.
  22. Da 5 Bloods is very good. A sneaky genre film that's always about something and features a terrific ensemble. With Delroy Lindo being a particular standout.
  23. It probably needs to be said, but Watchmen couldn't have been timed much better.
  24. I was privy to a preview screener of Amazon's THE VAST OF NIGHT recently. I think it's a very effective genre film with great attention to time period and a lot of style. If you like something like The Twilight Zone of old radio drama science fiction, or heck just like Orson Welles' War of the Worlds, I think you'll like this a lot.
  25. I'm looking forward to the new Dylan album. He's been a ray of light just dropping new things in the last month.
