  1. That's sort of my point, too - of all of the "kids" Rickie seems to me to be the one who still has something to prove, and the one who we can most easily afford to lose. He may eventually play as good as he looks, but he hasn't so far, and it's not as if he hasn't had his opportunities. I'd extend JJ before I extended Rickie, at least as of now. And don't mention injuries, please - JJ has overcome that situation just fine, thank you.
  2. That's a pretty big assumption, briggs, and one that messes with an order that has been working nicely, thank you. You would sacrifice run scoring potential just to make Rickie more comfortable? JJ has fallen off his insane pace from earlier in the year, but I wouldn't mess with the first 4 in any way. I will say that of the big 5 homegrown kids, Weeks seems to be the one who has yet to demonstrate much consistency.
  3. I checked out northside this AM, and their thread about if they can even make the playoffs is almost as amusing as their IGT yesterday. And props to ender for his IGT contributions over there.
  4. In the Brewers front office wouldn't Ash be the liklier candidate to leave, given his past GM experience?
  5. I'm officially now in the "do nothing" camp - the lefties we would like to have in the pen may already, operative word may, be in the minors in Thatcher and/or Parra, and any big-bat OFer or starter is going to cost way too much in prospects at this point. Sorry, peavey, but I'd just as soon keep guys like Parra, at least until the offseason, when DM can likely get more for them. If somebody wants to give us another pen lefty for some of the guys mentioned, guys like Sarfate, Jackson or Gwynn, then I'd have some interest, but they are the "blocked" guys, not the others mentioned here.
  6. Griffey would be my ideal addition for the stretch run, but doesn't he have one of the most ironclad no-trades in the game? Would he agree to come to Milwaukee? In this sense, I agree with russ - another corner guy in the OF probably has more day-in-day-out impact than another reliever, and there are both major and minor league candidates to flesh out the pen already in the system.
  7. That's all true, but what would it take to add a "stud" starter, especially when almost everybody else also wants one? Is Buerhle, as an example, really better than any of our 3-4-5-6 guys? Is he this year's Don Sutton? I don't think so, hence it makes no sense to mortgage the future just to add a guy who doesn't necessarily improve the team. The more I think about it, the more I think that we should do nothing unless we can add another pen lefty on the cheap.
  8. That's not true - TBow's ERA when his 3 blowups are removed is under 2. As Ned and others noted in today's papers, TBow has had a helluva year, but too many folks are letting what happened last year color their thinking, at least IMHO. There isn't a team anywhere in MLB that has a better 8th/9th inning combo than the Crew this year, despite that karmic negative attitude that some here have about our pen.
  9. Do you have an ungodly chin and a bad beard, too?http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  10. Nothing more than Gwynn for a guy who is likely the hottest "name" pitcher on the market? Huh?
  11. I'm a novice here and hardly knowledgable, but there appear to me to be only two areas that could be of concern: a possible trade, an unlikely "biggie," for a right-handed power hitting OF, and another lefty for the pen as an alternative LOOGY to Shouse. Other than that, I don't see any other areas of concern, at least not at the likely price. And given the way Hart is now playing, it wouldn't bother me at all if Melvin did nothing other than finding/adding another LOOGY, but that guy may be Thatcher or Parra. If Griffey would welcome a visit to Milwaukee and we could make that work, I wouldn't mind. The way the NL looks now, who's a better candidate than the Crew for the NL berth in the WS?http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  12. Jackson has no value? What were you thinking with that one, Brian? As Al said, both Zach and TGJ have more value, even as trade chips, than you've given them here IMO.
  13. Just asking, adam, nothing more. I didn't say the experiment had failed, but rather was asking when, to use the vernacular, the sample size was large enough. And two years is way too long for a team that wants to be a serious contender IMO. Two years means that we still have potential problems in CF throughout two of our best chances, at least in terms of preserving the roster, for being serious pennant/WS contenders.
  14. Russ, I've come to trust your opinion, along with others here. I'm just curious as to when the turning point comes, the point at which this "experiment" has obviously failed? I realize that other than Gwynn there are few options presently on the roster, but after the almost-collisions last night and his major "oops" tonight, how much evidence is there that this is going to work? Like I asked earlier, isn't almost 60 games enough? It wouldn't be quite as bad if he was hitting in a fashion that resembled last year, and I know that his numbers project really well for the position, but at one point, Scott Kavanaugh was supposed to be the Badgers starting QB - a kid named Bollinger replaced him, and we all know what happened for the next 3 years?
  15. I've been quiet about the issue, but when does "small sample size" no longer apply to Hall as a centerfielder? It's almost 60 games now, and dumb stuff keeps costing the team runs, some of which could be costly. I was in favor of the experiment for a long time; now I'm not so sure!
  16. Now that's an answer that makes sense. I can't see any way that anybody can offer Melvin enough to make the deal without it getting into a realm that few could even suggest.
  17. The Milledge issues didn't stop when he got to the bigs - if anything it appears that they increased. Most NY-area fans that I know would just as soon he be gone for a big, "fooled you" return. No thanks.
  18. Milledge has excess baggage as well - no thanks! Folks seem to fall in love with prominent minor league/prospect names they've seen a lot. Milledge has done almost nothing at the major league level to justify that cost. Don't we already have the same sort of 5-tool guy in Hart?
  19. Is this really true, or just a reflection of the state of the system?: "Twice more Milwaukee showed itself less-than-patient with free-agent acquisitions. Outfielder-third baseman Mike Carlin was let go when Drew Anderson was demoted from Nashville and pitcher Luis Villarreal, who had been in independent ball since 2004, was cut when Luis Pena was promoted. ... Previously, catcher Max St. Pierre (since resigned to extended spring training as a pitcher) and outfielder Ulyses Davenport were released. ... " I don't quite get the less-than-patient comment within the context of how well all the teams in the system are doing. Why be patient when there are legit replacement candidates available?
  20. I'm not a stathead and don't follow every player, but given the way Abreu has played over the last season and a half or so, aren't we talking about trading for another Mench? Just asking.
  21. It may be a dumb question, but hasn't Spurling actually pitched pretty well over his last few outings? He's hardly a candidate for Obermueller status.
  22. Bringing up either Thatcher or Parra would make much more sense.
  23. I was convinced that this thread was a cosmic put-on until I googled his name!http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif How do 3 closers co-exist for the rest of the year? That's the one thing that would concern me. Do we really think DBow is going to be satisfied with being the 8th inning guy forever? I guess our odds of retaining Cordero aren't very likely.
  24. Is it time for a pool predicting when Cordero actually allows a run, or when his ERA goes above 0.00?http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  25. He's only at 94 pitches or so - he'll be back.
