  1. I really can't see them trading a catcher. If they only have Lucroy or Maldonado, then he gets injured, we've got NO ONE -- probably even less depth than the SS predicament last year. To that I say, "NO WAY!" It's not remotely worth the risk!
  2. Yuck. That looks like a Brewers bowling shirt. The powder blue juxtaposed as a main color with the dark blue as paired "primary" colors takes points away, too (actually, about anything in the powder blue does that for me). The NBA is reaching new lows in good uniform design. This two-color shirt reminds me also of the terrible-looking two-tone Buffalo Bills jerseys they wore for about 10 years 'til last year. The whole business of different-color shoulder "yokes" should be confined to the NHL, and most of those I don't care for, either.
  3. If Hart can net you 2 solid pitchers (or 1 solid pitcher & 1 low-risk/hopeful pitcher), the savings would likely create some decent fiscal wiggle room if the payroll's really going to be around $80M as DM said (JSOnline over the weekend). Not saying it's an ideal move or a likely one, but moving Hart would have those ramifications.
  4. I like this move. 4.5 years in the bigs & respectable control is pretty darn good compared to most of the guys essentially ejected from last year's 'pen who are now seeking employment elsewhere (or hospitals that are open). I like the direction so far for next year's bullpen: Axford Henderson Badenhop Kintzler (likely)
  5. Fields, mostly. It seemed like half the bats are 1Bs, which at this point wouldn't do us any good. Mainly I find myself really hoping we don't lose Heckathorn, though if they rank him that highly on something like that, I'd guess the odds are pretty good he gets taken . . . though of course he'd still have to stick on the drafting team's 25-man or he's ours again.
  6. Span's hardly mediocre unless you never see him play. The greater issue with him over the past couple years has been staying healthy. When he's been healthy, he's been a very solid contributor. He's a plus-defender, a decent baserunner, & a pretty good non-power hitter. When he's struggled the past couple years, it's most typically been either when he's playing hurt or trying to re-find his groove after DL time.
  7. If Figgins could find his pre-Seattle form, he'd definitely be a step up from Bianchi, just a bit of a risk in terms of how SS-capable he'd be. If he couldn't find that pre-Seattle form, then Bianchi makes more sense. Figgins does have major history with Roenicke, too, which could be a factor, as well as the fact that his "game" is about speed -- just the type that Roenicke likes.
  8. Without having looked over the FA list recently, I have to think there are far better MIF backups available than Cody Ransom. Izturis & Counsell were also about totally worthless with a bat in their hands by the time their Brewer tenures ended, so I'd hardly consider them a worthy measuring stick for Ransom . . . and other than Ransom having a bit of pop (which virtually disappeared the last month or so) in the limited times he actually hit a ball into play. I say this each winter: I believe your top reserves (primarily the 4th OF & 5th IF) HAVE TO BE players capable of starting 100 games for you & performing at least nearly as well as you'd expect a starter to. Given the gaps we've had in the middle IF over the past 2 seasons, I think it's worth the investment to pay $2-4M/year for a starting-capable top IF reserve (think: Jamey Carroll) when the alternative is trotting out offensive "dreck" like Izturis, Counsell, & Ransom. (note: "offensive" in the last sentence meaning "pertaining to hitting a baseball," not "guilty of offending")
  9. Often that's correct, but some years work out like a couple years ago did when Renteria signed an absurd 2-yr. deal w/ the Giants ($18M total?), plus another guy or two signed big money early, and then the market proved that those contracts were the inflated/outlier ones, not the latter ones. Lots of small trades & two bigger-name guys signing today . . . I'm glad it's getting interesting -- also typical as the Winter Meetings are around the corner. One thing I've learned to trust Melvin on the vast majority of the time is that when we don't hear about much Brewers activity (esp. when most else is quiet), it seems to mean the Brewers are out there approaching the right guys but doing so sensibly, and also talking logically & realistically in trade discussions rather than fantasy-type moves. . . . in other words, he & the FO are doing diligent groundwork which could possibly lead to a good acquisition or two, and most likely NOT leading to knee-jerk or otherwise boneheaded moves.
  10. Ransom was so terrible: quite respectable in the field but completely worthless with the bat outside of a bit of pop. Striking out nearly 50% of his Brewers ABs and batting well below .200 = a good idea? I'm not sure it's a good idea at all even if 10 better/affordable options sign elsewhere. Heck, I'd still take Bianchi over Ransom every day of the week and I'm NOT in love with Bianchi being on the 2013 roster.
  11. Well, if we could get him post-waivers or on a reverse-Bill-Hall type of trade, he'd quite possibly be a good step up from Bianchi as a reserve IF, he could play all over the place including SS (I think), and be a "veteran presence" guy, the last point of which would hopefully preclude the idea of clogging the roster with another corner OF/IF reserve bat a la Kotsay/Ishikawa with Gamel & Green already logical candidates for those roster spots. I'm not sure he's the best option for the Brewers, but there are pieces of logic that work. Plus he's also had significant MLB success, albeit >3 years ago.
  12. He still allowed fewer hits than innings pitched and posted more than a strikeout per inning in the AL which has a DH. I'll live with some inconsistency. At 29 and another year removed from surgery, he's certainly a good buy low candidate for the simple reason that when right, he's a top of the rotation pitcher. If you over value consistency you end up with Suppans and Wolf's. Briggs, I tend to agree with you rather often. But just to cite a few of Liriano's stats doesn't do justice to the whole picture. 162 BBs in 291 IPs the past 2 years, most with a home park that's generally a "pitcher's park," an increasingly lousy ERA (5.09 & 5.34 the past 2 years -- think of a Suppan type of "progression") . . . it has nothing to do with just consistency, more with being consistently bad. Don't want Wolf? Then why sign another guy who's trending toward Suppan-like results faster than Wolf?
  13. Those of you who keep plugging Liriano obviously haven't watched most or all of Liriano's entire MLB career like those of us living in the Twin Cities area. Especially over the past two years, Liriano's been FAR more lousy than good. At best, he's inconsistent. More typically, he can't be trusted. At worst, he's beyond terrible. Million-dollar arm, 50-cent confidence. Rick Anderson's a good pitching coach. Liriano wouldn't change his approach or trust his stuff enough to make a meaningful difference when, had he done so, he could've punched his ticket to about anywhere as a FA. To my thinking, Liriano would represent a huge risk and he's not remotely worth it. Heck, the past 2 years, Shaun Marcum has been much more healthy and much more effective than Liriano, but most Brewers fans don't think it's worth it or realistic to re-sign him. Liriano's nowhere close to Marcum's level these days. Why would we want him? His 2011 perfect game? Manny Parra has one of those in his pocket, too (in AAA, but still! -- heck, so do Mike Warren & Phil Humber) and the Brewers aren't even convinced he's worth keeping in the bullpen or anywhere else in the team's future. Liriano's far closer to being a Manny Parra than a Shaun Marcum based on the past few years.
  14. Escobar is awful? I don't think so. Or did you mean their 2B incumbents?
  15. Sure, but don't discount the layers of "GM speak". On one hand, he's often proven very true to his word when he makes "forecasting" comments like that. But he's also made a bevy of "we're not motivated to trade him" remarks about guys over the years when he's also had total willingness if not even potential hopefulness to make a deal if it's the right deal.
  16. At least the Brewers actually needed a shortstop. Yes, theoretically the Brewers don't need another starting OF. However... Going into last winter, the Brewers still ended up signing Aramis Ramirez in spite of having McGehee (down year), Green (hugely promising AAA year & made post-season roster), & Gamel (huge bat & also a 3B but likely headed to 1B). I do love how the Ramirez signing worked out in hindsight, though I think Green kinda got hosed (by Ishikawa being kept) even after a great spring training & ended up w/ a very blah year in AAA. And McGehee netted us a should've-been-better-but-sometimes-alright power BP arm. I'd still guess that Hamilton's more likely playing for a team other than MIL next year. But Kahrl's logic is solid and I could see other dominoes falling after a Hamilton signing that end up addressing other team needs. ...All I'm saying is that just because things look a certain way now doesn't mean they'll necessarily remain that way. (...which could also lead to Melvin making moves to address other team needs from a position of reasonable strength.)
  17. That "new classic" concept looks like a Braves uniform. I don't want a Braves uniform. Count me out on any future Brewers uniform rooted in the Braves' look & color scheme. Yuck. Those belong to another team & organization who left Milwaukee nearly 50 years ago. I far prefer the current look -- or ANY Brewers look!!!! -- a thousand times over anything that remotely resembles the Braves. These are the Brewers, not the Braves. And NO MORE RED in MLB -- enough already! -- red became the 2000's version of the '70s powder blue or the '90s black (or, on a lesser basis, teal).
  18. The Red Sox weren't receiving revenue sharing money.
  19. Loria probably has someone go take it to the bank for him. What a terrible organization and a disgrace of an owner! Bud needs to nix the deal and oust Loria -- not because it's not necessarily a justifiable deal if the prospects are THAT good, but because it totally kills (again!) any hope for MLB succeeding in that market for the foreseeable future.
  20. I still think keeping Miguel DLS on the 40-man is no sure thing. Keeping Fautino DLS on the 40-man does seem more likely. Josh Stinson a possible DFA/outright guy, too? There are lots of guys out there like him already, too -- an abundantly replaceable commodity.

  22. Small detail, but per baseball-reference.com, 2014 is Gamel's 1st year of being arb-eligible. . . . . Probably helps make your point even better.
  23. Except that deal wasn't that simple: Twins got: Delmon Young, Brendan Harris, & Jason Pridie Rays got: Matt Garza, Jason Bartlett, & minor leaguer Eduardo Morlan
  24. Perhaps not many folks' ideal choice -- certainly not as "hot ticket" as Gennett -- but Taylor Green at 2B wouldn't be fundamentally screwy, either, since that's his "native" position. Not that Weeks is the 1st guy I'd look to trade at all. But somewhere along the way, they have to at least listen to see which vets might net the best return. If the return for Weeks is a blowout they can't refuse, there are other 2B candidates out there just like there was Aramis Ramirez at 3B last year. But, for the record, I'm one who believes Green deserves a shot at more than just a bench spot.
  25. I'm very anti-DH, and having it in only 1 league, while not my preference, sure is better than having it in both.
