Colby, any info on Cole Gillespie? The BF.net site won't work now - too busy. Thanks. No info on Gillespie, as I did not provide a profile for him. I have updated the scouting reports on the official draft pick thread, including comments from BA & MLB.com. He's a good hitter, and I remember hearing the stories of him hitting a bomb off of Lincecum despite having a sore shoulder. I like this pick for the simple fact that the Brewers seemed to take him for his bat.

There are some really good players flying off the board just ahead of the Brewers in round 3. Mike Murray (prep C, NJ) or Barfield's kid (big OF from TX) could be an option here...or Jared Hughes, I don't recall seeing his name being called. EDIT: I spoke too soon...

Oak Creek LHP Tony Butler off the board to the Mariners with the 5th pick in the 3rd round. Congrats Tony!

I'll be honest, I wouldn't mind the Brewer pick as much if the Brewers took a more polished pick in round 1. Jeffress & Brewer 1-2 is a lot like Rogers & Gallardo 1-2, except that Brewer (unlike Gallardo) was never really considered a potential first-round pick. Obviously the organization isn't changing their drafting philosophy with their new-found success at the big-league level. I don't mean to make this sound like a knee-jerk reaction, but so far I'm not impressed.

If the Brewers took Brewer in the 2nd round, Brewer playing football at FSU will not be an issue.

Brent Brewer, another Aflac All-American, with the next pick. Two high-risk, high-reward players with the top two picks. The aptly named Brewer is a centerfielder down the road.

Here are my first-hand observations on Jeffress from last year's Aflac All-American Classic (keep in mind, his velocity reportedly has been sustained in the upper-90s all spring, deep into ballgames): From the actual game: Jeremy Jeffress, whom the East were saving for the ninth, warmed up quickly and replaced Sullivan with two on and no outs. Pumping his fist into his glove repeatedly and getting big cheers from the crowd, Jeffress hit 94 on his first five fastballs, striking out Kyle Drabek in the process. He also threw an inconsistent but potentially dominant 79 mph slider. Unfortunately for Jeffress and the East, he never threw 94 again, as his velocity quickly declined to 91, 89 and 88 mph before settling at 87. The eighth continued to be a nightmare for the East, as Green reached on an error with a runner scoring, while another runner scored on a wild pitch. Shepherd then followed with a RBI single to right field, and Rapoport reached on yet another error. Bridges singled to left field on a good fastball by Jeffress to load the bases. Jeffress got Alcombrack to pop up to third base, but Chris Marrero dropped the ball in foul territory giving Alcombrack a new life (Marrero committed three errors in the inning). Alcombrack then walked in a run. Jeffress finally got a little bit of luck on his side, as he got a double play when Ryan Adams flew out to centerfield and the East threw to third base after Rapoport apparently had tagged and scored. The ump, likely tired due to the heat and length of the inning, called Rapoport out, even if the replay clearly showed he had tagged. With five runs scoring, the West seemed up for good, eight to four. From the scrimmage: While Betances has a quiet confidence on the mound, Jeremy Jeffress (South Boston, VA) definitely allows himself to show his emotions on the mound. Armed with a heater that has been clocked in the upper-90s this summer, he started in the 90-91 range before dipping to 85-87. This is a trend that also continued during the Aflac game itself, again, which I will also get to later on. He has a slurvy breaking pitch that could use some more consistency, but it definitely shows promise. Madtown, I can't come in the chat room. Begin the boos...while I'm not a huge fan of a prep arm, especially one in Jeffress, value-wise it is a good pick at 16, and isn't a surprise based on the reports I was hearing.

Baseball America hinted that Miller may have set his bonus demands so high in hopes that he falls to the Yankees or Red Sox, so don't be surprised if he slides right on by the Brewers. Scherzer could slide too.

I've tossed around a lot of ideas myself. The draft, at least round 1, needs to be televised. MLB is behind the game in that regard, although they do an excellent job with their web coverage. The compensation picks need to be re-vamped. Right now they just don't work in it's current format, although most of the frustration I have seen towards comp picks are from fans of teams that don't have many comp picks. The best teams always seem to have the most comp picks, and that seems to be because they do a very good job recycling free agents, often those obtained at the trading deadline the June/July of the previous year. I'm tempted to say get rid of compensation picks. Due to the arbitration process, most free agents don't even qualify for the draft-compensaton process. The draft shouldn't be limited to 20 rounds. That would eliminate the DFE process and penalize the teams that use the process as a way to improve their system. I could see the draft rounded out to 30-35 rounds, but 20 is way too few. I'm not a big fan of trading draft picks. I think it would actually deflate the importance of the draft as opposed to making it more interesting.

Almonte made national news a few weeks ago when he married a 30-year old woman. His exploits have been tossed around several times around these parts and I believe on the off-topic forum as well. He's taking part of an All-American game that includes several top draft eligible players from around the nation that is to be televised tomorrrow night. Almonte will be lucky to be drafted on day 1. His stuff now isn't as legendary as it used to be, and of course you have the character issues to deal with. Kiker's makeup issues are overblown if you ask me. 3) The Brewers never draft Colbyjack's favorite round 1 pick. Kiker isn't really my favorite, that was more of a prediction of who they will actually take. I'll tell you my favorites at a later point in time.

Callis also projects that Miller falls to the D-Backs with Hochevar going first overall and the Rockies taking Greg Reynolds 2nd overall.

Here's my last attempt at a mock draft as we enter draft day tomorrow. I'm sticking by my guns that the Royals will not take Andrew Miller... 1. Royals: Brad Lincoln Rumors have the Royals pick down between Miller and Lincoln. $5.5 million, or an easy $4 million pre-draft deal... 2. Rockies: Evan Longoria The Rockies have worked out Longoria extensively, and don't let the "surprise" pick at the top effect their plan. 3. Devil Rays: Andrew Miller Miller was a pick of the DRays out of HS, so he would have to give his blessing for it to happen again. 4. Pirates: Greg Reynolds The Pirates have been focused on college pitching all spring. 5. Mariners: Brandon Morrow Despite previous reports, the Ms aren't as hot on Hochevar, and will pass on local product Lincecum as well. 6. Tigers: Luke Hochevar The Tigers aren't afraid of dealing with Boras, and they're happy to have Hochevar fall. 7. Dodgers: Clayton Kershaw Surprise, surprise, a prep pitcher for the Dodgers. 8. Reds: Tim Lincecum Everyone has them pegged to take Stubbs, but they would be stupid to pass on a college arm. 9. Orioles: Billy Rowell The O's have been focused on Rowell for several weeks now. 10. Diamondbacks: Max Scherzer The two big Boras pitchers don't fall very far, as the D-Backs add a big arm to their talented system. 12. Rangers: Drew Stubbs Recent questions surrounding Stubbs causes him to slip a little to the in-state Rangers. 13. Cubs: Travis Snider The Cubs reportedly are all over the prep bats, and Snider's the best one. 14. Blue Jays: Daniel Bard If Snider is here, they'll take him, and Matt Antonelli is another favorite. 15. Nationals: Jeremy Jeffress Another local product for DC. 16. Brewers: Kasey Kiker The Brewers have liked Kiker's arm all spring, and he performed well at the recent pre-draft workout. 17. Padres: Brett Sinkbeil The Pads love college players, and Sinkbeil is one of the best relatively no-name arms. 18. Phillies: Kyle Drabek Some character quirks cause Drabek to fall about 10-15 picks further than he should. 19. Marlins: Chris Marrero Marrero is a local product, and a perfect match for the Fish. 20. Twins: Hank Conger Conger's switch-hitting power drops no further. 21. Yankees: David Huff The Yankees are happy to have this polished southpaw join their system to become trade bait by the 2007 deadline. 22. Nationals: Stephen Englund Another rumored pre-draft deal. 23. Astros: Joba Chamberlain Chamberlain has slid a little bit late in the season due to some shaky outings and earlier injury setbacks. 24. Braves: Brett Anderson The Braves taking a prep pitcher? Crazy. 25. Angels: Colton Willems The Angels aren't shy about adding prep arms early. 26. Dodgers: Kyler Burke One of the rising names in the draft, Burke's hitting prowess and overall athleticism are appealing to the Dodgers. 27. Red Sox: Matt Antonelli The Red Sox have taken a lot of college IF lately, but Antonelli is a local product. 28. Red Sox: Jared Hughes Two polished products for a team that prefers college players early. 29. White Sox: Stephen King The defending World Champs add an athletic middle IF to their system. 30. Cardinals: Brooks Brown Brown is the pick for a team expected to take a college arm. Ian Kennedy is a popular name here.
