  1. The Tigers are having some troubles signing Cameron Maybin. Right before the draft, we heard some rumblings that Maybin may be tougher to sign than initially thought, and if he's asking for more than $3 million dollars (more than the money Humber got from the Mets as the 3rd overall pick in '04), I think it was more than just coincidence that he fell to the 10th overall pick. Last year Homer Bailey took a little longer to sign, as the Brewers opted for Mark Rogers, who signed quickly. Again, I don't think it's a coincidence that they passed on Maybin and Braun signed within a week or two. The Brewers under Jack Z. certainly like getting their draftees into camp as soon as possible, with Rickie Weeks being the only one of his first-round picks that didn't sign by the end of June. And since Phillip Humber's name was brought up, and since I didn't see this mentioned on the minor league forum or anywhere else, Humber is out for the rest of this year after having TJ surgery. BA's draft notes
  2. To be honest, I think you're thinking a little too deep into this subject. I doubt the Brewers go out of their way to draft, or not draft (and develop) switch hitters. It does seem as though there are less and less of them around these days. My brother and I were actually talking about this at the game last night (in regards to Jose Cruz Jr.) wondering why players that were significantly better from one side of the plate didn't just hit from that side all of the time. Maybe those switch-hitters are realizing that as well.
  3. Parra...that's not good. I've had this concern too many times before. I'd like to say there's always next year, but far too often, when the word shoulder + injury takes over, so does one's career. I wish Manny the best. I've seen him pitch, albeit in Beloit, but he resembled a MLB pitcher better than any other minor leaguer I've ever seen. Get well soon, and for good, Manny.
  4. Man alive, best birthday since when I got the Hoth action playset in like 1983... 1. I help a lone beer-lady move a half-barrel into her cooler...she gives me a free Sprecher. 2. My wife tells a nearby camera-man that it's my b-day, he takes interest in my hat (EC Bears) and shirt (you know about that) and tells me he produced the EC DVD about Hank Aaron and wants to swap links. 3. Dana Eveland comes in to pitch. 4. I cross paths with a guy that was in Friday's that saw me on TV and buys me a gigantic beer. 5. The Brewers not only come back to tie, but win...big. 6. Eveland wins his first big-league game. And that's just from about 8:00 on. Good day. http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y155/colbyjack/eveland3.jpg BTW, the shirt in question, to make a sale... http://prodtn.cafepress.com/0/14130350_F_tn.jpg
  5. Crack of the Bat-Craig Hansen signs The Boston Globe also has reported this info (they beat me Jim...http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif ). He could be up with the team by the end of the year for a playoff push.
  6. All indications are that Weeks has decided to play college ball. good luck whereever you go, Jemile How do you figure? There is still plenty of time to sign, and unless you're referring to something that hasn't been posted here, I can't see how you have jumped to that conclusion by what HAS been posted here.
  7. Some fun info on Weeks, who is playing with the Florida Bombers, most recently at the Perfect Game/WWBA Summer Championship: www.baseballamerica.com/t...tcobb.html Bombers middle infielder Jemile Weeks continues to show improvement, and the Brewers have undoubtedly taken notice. Milwaukee drafted the younger brother of their current second baseman, Rickie Weeks, in the eighth round this year. While he remains a work in progress?much like his older brother at the same age before he starred at Southern?Jemile has been impressive this week. He homered, singled and stole a base in two at-bats Thursday and has made all the routine plays up the middle, in part because of a completely different perspective he's taken into the summer. "It's definitely different," Weeks said. "Coming in here as a junior, all you wanted was to be seen and make a good impression, but now that everything is out of the way, you're so much more relaxed. There is not as much pressure." Weeks entered the tournament as the only one of the Brewers' first nine picks yet to sign. His performance might be giving the Brewers a little something more to think about before they watch Weeks walk off to Miami. "They've talked to me on a number of occasions, so nothing is settled," Weeks said of the negotiations. "I've talked to them, I've talked to my college coaches, who are all here watching me play this week . . . so whatever happens, happens."
  8. Don't doubt the magic 8-ball.
  9. Some very nice and exciting promotions. Although all of them are tainted by Parra's move to the DL. I just hate to see that he is still having shoulder problems. Not good.
  10. As noted on other threads, Jack Z. and his staff have done a very good job signing their early draft picks. Other than 2002, no top pick has gone unsigned under Zduriencik's watch. Jemile Weeks will sign before the summer is over. Ryan Babineau on the other hand is probably the most likely of our top 20 picks to attend college. Hopefully the Brewers will do what it takes to get him in the fold.
  11. Josh Habel continues to deal without much pub. Great to see, as the Manatees have an impressive rotation right now with Habel, Taubenheim, Villanueva and Dillard all pitching well. Monday night the Sox play the final game of this six-game home stand by closing out their three-game series against the Brewers. Starters for the game are Carlos Torres (RHP) for Great Falls and Steve Hammond (LHP) for Helena. Game time is at 7:00 pm (8:00 Central). Hammond has been dealing lately, too bad there's no audio for this game, especially since the Brewers game will probably be over right around when this one is underway. Our Pioneer League affiliates have been a lot of fun to follow ever since Jack Z. took over as scouting director.
  12. Yeah, I saw what he did. I have to tailor my comments to avoid the "small sample" warnings http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif . Let's hope he keeps it up. I still believe in him. He started the season hot, and everyone loved him.
  13. Thanks for the Helena Brewers for providing a very fun game to listen to this evening, as Mass already talked about. Hammond was dealing, and EDR's boy Fermaint just added a 3-run blast to widen the gap. It won't take long until people start talking about Hammond like they do Taubenheim & Villanueva, even if it is at the rookie league level. Wooley got knocked around in the 2nd. There probably aren't too many, if any, pitchers in the system not named Eveland that I root for more, so here's to him getting his game back together shortly. The pitching in our minor leagues has been extremely fun to follow this season. Hopefully Hammond's early success is legitimate so we can another sleeper name to the top prospect list. ***Oh yeah, while Nelson Cruz' promotion was deserved, here's to Brad Nelson getting his confidence and swing back at the AA level. Maybe that demotion was just the spark he needed to get back on track.
  14. Carlos Hereaud signed. From Tom Flanagan: We signed our 9th rounder 3B Carlos Hereaud last night?it should be announced tonight. He?ll be heading to Arizona, and the ?fire league?.
  15. While the space needle is more intriguing to follow, John Habel came in and had another very fine performance. He is yet another one of those sleeper pitching prospects having a fine season in the organization, of which we seem to have more & more of this season. Who else is starting to get reallly concerned with Krynzel (if you haven't already)? While Hart keeps doing what he has always done (which is good) so is Krynzel (which isn't). From everything I've seen, heard and read, David is a really hard worker and a great guy, but he keeps striking out, he still is struggling on the basepaths, and he's just not hitting well, especially in a consistent fashion. It's been the same story ever since his brief stint at Beloit in 2001. I'm sure he'll have an amazing second half and prove me wrong, but his Jeckyll & Hyde impersonations are hard to swallow. ***EDIT: By the way, I think the Helena game in Missoula is being delayed and/or postponed. Not much in the way of a broadcast tonight, and weather.com shows some storms over most of Montana.
  16. I checked Hart's season stats and I was impressed by his walk total. He's maintaining that one BB for every 10 ABs, something I know many of us were concerned about. And, he smacks his 22nd double on the season. While the HR totals aren't gaudy, the extra base hits are there. The man just keeps on hitting.
  17. That's less than a HR every 11 innings. Hardly seems a problem. I'm not saying it's a problem, although that many HRs in the minor league level may mean more than that many HRs at the big-league level. If anything I was referring back to some earlier conversations talking about groundball pitchers & the amount of HRs they allow. They don't always coincide. Man, it's great to see Hart doing so well. Over .300 after starting the season so incredibly slow.
  18. Only one fly ball out against Josh Wahpepah in his nearly-perfect five innings -- my life will be complete when I hear Bob Uecker say "Wahpepah" every fifth day a few years down the road... No kidding, he's dealing. Although given his extreme groundout to flyball ratio, he's another groundball pitcher like Carlos Villanueva & even Pedro Liriano that has given up his fair share of home runs (7 in about 80 innings of work now).
  19. Nice story on Braun from today's MJS: www.jsonline.com/sports/b...336680.asp I'd say the issues of him playing (or not playing) 3B has been blown out of proportion a little, probably similar to how Fielder was tabbed as a DH only when we drafted him. Good news on Aguilar as well. If he turned down $50K, I wonder how much he signed for.
  20. Great news. As pointed out, the Brewers have done a great job signing their early picks under Jack Z. I never really doubted whether or not lil' Weeks would sign. It's always good news to hear when they do sign though, so thanks for the heads up. Major props to Jack Z and his staff, and props to Mark A, who is obviously ponied up alot more $$$ than the Seligs did last year. Obviously ponied up a lot more $$$? Again as noted, the Brewers have never been stingy when it comes to signing draft picks under Jack Z. Mark A. hasn't changed that. It will be interesting to see how much Jemile has signed for, but I don't think he received that much more than slot value. He was slotted as a top 5 round pick, so nabbing him in the 8th isn't that big of a stretch. I do agree that he is very much like his big brother, who was also a little undersized coming out of high school. Hopefully Jemile has Rickie's work ethic as well. He and Carlos Hereaud could form an interesting infield tandem to watch as they move up. I'm guessing both, assuming Hereaud signs, will start in Arizona, as the Brewers seem to like starting their prep picks at the lower of the two rookie league affiliates.
  21. grant richardson not embarasing himself in A ball...sollman indeed heating up as well, but where the heck are the walks from he and festa??? those guys were freakin' machines last year Another example of why we shouldn't get excited about college guys in rookie ball. It's hard to call Sollmann at .250 as "heating up" two months into the season. Rasheed strikes out a lot. He's like the CF, stolen base version of Brian Opdyke, with a little quicker bat. I have a hard time seeing him as anything. What a weird comparison, where did that one come from? Even if you admit to comparing absolute apples to oranges, Rasheed at least has had some success as a pro, and has progressed since his frosh year at Lake City CC. Opdyke has done nothing.
  22. You mean Manny Parra's contract prevented the signings of others (Jarrod Page & Steven Kahn who didn't sign from 2002's top 10 picks)? Speculation on my part, but there were rumors just before the draft that they were contemplating a budget pick with their first-rounder (Khalil Greene was rumored to be their target for such a pick). Since it took $1.55 million to sign Manny, I think it's clear they didn't have the money necessary to sign Page, Kahn, etc., although they did land Moss on day 2 for a fair chunk of change. And yeah, recent history doesn't help Ryan Babineau given your examples of Hernandez & Bussiere, but hopefully this year they'll change that. Given the need for catching in the organization, especially since Babineau was the first (and most talented) catcher they selected this year, hopefully they'll do what it takes to get him signed.
  23. No one knows what the chances are, but just look at Jack Z's history signing early draft picks. Other than 2002 when Manny Parra threw the scouting dep't. a curveball, no other top 10 pick has gone unsigned. In fact, he has done an extremely good job signing draftees from the top 20 rounds. So, I'm optimistic that Weeks & Hereaud will be in the fold, and hopefully Babineau too.
  24. Other than lil' Weeks, Hereaud and Babineau, I'm guessing almost all of the other unsigned draftees are potential DFEs.
  25. I found a picture of Ryan Babineau in action from the Area Code Games last summer. Nothing special, but I thought I would share: http://calsportmedia.com/v-web/gallery/albums/Area-Code-Baseball-04/66377_G.jpg
