  1. Are others here as sick of hearing about this as I am? I live abroad, so I get my sports news in print over the internet - for baseball that primarily means ESPN, fangraphs and mlbtraderumors.com. I am so sick and tired of the constant "updates" that amount to little more than speculation, most of which has been upcycled from the previous day's speculation. I shouldn't have to say anything here about my disdain for ESPN, but why, on sites like mlbtr, do I have to sift through so much of this crap? Yeah, it's the off-season, low season for baseball news, but this level of "coverage" is ridiculous.
  2. 1. a wild sheep chase. not to be that guy, just sayin'. 2. if i recall, there was an audio book edition of consider the lobster by david foster wallace that he read himself that was supposed to be great. either way, those essays are worth a go. i'm currently immersed in the giant that is infinite jest. recently finished the milwaukee braves: a baseball eulogy by bob buege - great for a milwaukee/baseball nut, not great if you tire of minutiae and using the word whitewash in reference to a good pitching performance.
  3. having not lived in wisconsin for a few years, it's been a while, but... years ago i saw pharcyde in the basement venue they had open for a while, name escapes me now. it was a huge room, but the ceiling was low, which, combined with the hundreds of human bodies in the place killed the acoustics. i've also seen maybe a half dozen shows in the rave bar (ground floor, to the right as you come in). regarding the theme of this topic, i'd have to say the resounding message here is: don't get your hopes up. nothing about the rave/eagle's ballroom is especially enticing for the concertgoer. edit: heck, while i'm on the subject of shows in milwaukee, RIP globe east. it's been gone for years, but that was always my favorite place to see bands in milwaukee.
  4. while this is a good - local - place to start your search, i'd recommend trolling the messageboards at both fantasybaseballcafe.com and razzball. lots of veteran leagues seek owners on those two boards.
  5. If RonRo believed this religiously, I'd think batting yuni at #2 all year (to make his bat somewhat effective [yes, i know he's been hot lately]) would have made a lot of sense. But seriously, Lucroy should have moved up a long time ago. And the ghost of Taylor Green ought to start haunting that lineup.
  6. i know my brothers are going to the second game, one got "the company seats" - something like row 20 behind home plate. also, there's likely a group from the kettle of fish. they always have outings when the brewers are at citi.
  7. stumbled across this article while doing some research at work. this design professor regularly assigns his students the task of delineating the gameplay of baseball in a concept map. the article focuses on the process of creating concept maps, which is interesting enough in itself, but it also includes a number of images of student work. another fun-to-look-at meta tidbit.
  8. Brew, I live in Taipei, if you'd like to get a beer and/or see a CPBL game while you're on the island, PM me. Here are a few book recommendations: Pioneering in Formosa - WA Pickering. Oldie but goodie, 19th century Victorians roaming Taiwan and recording it. The Minor Arts of Daily Life: Pop Culture in Taiwan - Jordan, Morris, Moskowitz. An interesting look at some of the "Why?"s and "How?"s of Taiwan. Three Legged Horse - Ch'ing Wen Cheng. Some local short stories from the 1980s. Hope this is useful. For more options, follow this thread.
  9. Whoa, whoa, whoa. Who ever heard of playing Edward 40s hands with only one 40? This kid is just getting soft treatment on every level. Clearly.
  10. radman, check yr inbox. we need one to fill a second year dynasty league. 6x6, 25 man roster, 5 minors, $280 cap, march 20 auction. team with plenty of rebuild options, lots of overpaid players to drop and rebuild with (see below). pm me if interested! joe mauer c 42adrian gonzalez 1b 31placido polance 3b 6evan longoria 3b 47juan uribe 2b/ss/3b 1jason bay of 24curtis granderson of 24ben zobrist of/2b 22justin morneau 1b 28ivan rodriguez c 1orlando hudson 2b 1andruw jones of 1magglio ordonez of 1freddie freeman 1b 1adeiny hechevarria ss 1brett wallace 1b 1matt capps p 1francisco cordero p 8kevin correia p 1matt garza p 13edwin jackson p 6derek lowe p 3matt thornton p 6jason vargas p 1brad lidge p 1joe saunders p 6chris volstad p 2joel zumaya p 1noel arguelles p 1chris sale p 1
  11. i know i'm late to this party, and the link is actually a few years old. feast your eyes on this. it's new to me and i can't believe it. found via this amusing notgraphs post.
  12. ok. if we're getting into it to this extent, let's speculate on what reyes might cost. he'll be 28 this season, and he's making $11M (per cot's). star players have been demanding longer and longer contracts in recent off-seasons. i'll take a shot and say that as long as reyes has a solid season in 2011, he'll ask for 7 years at $100M (just under $15M per), divide that up however you like. thoughts?
  13. message sent. need one more for second year dynasty league ($60) if anyone else is looking. pm me for info.
  14. we recently adopted two kittens - a gray/black tiger with a white belly and a black and white button tail - and they're tons of fun. we're going to need a bigger apartment soon.
  15. mlbtr also has it that several teams have inquired on aaron miles. he's not my favorite option, but he has been a consistent 280 stick and he's played 800+ innings of shortstop with a serviceable (see: better than betancourt) UZR. plus, it would take a notorious brewer killer off the market and give us another utility guy who can play all over the place.
  16. in a short interview on milb.com, brett lawrie tells robert emrich: and so the lawrie-position-roulette wheel continues to spin. could make some sense since jose bautista could become a free agent after 2011 and i read somewhere that he hopes to be playing right field in '11. still wish the kid the best, hope for his sake that the old adage 'that bat will play anywhere' works out for him in the end.
  17. chris jaffe has a fun read over at the hardball times - 15 worst endings ever to regular season games. your hometown milwaukee brewers appear twice, once as winners and once as losers, but i won't say more about it than that. what can be said (perhaps not enough) is that the cubs' futility and proclivity for crapping the bed is made note of.
  18. tomorrow i'm going to start amulet by roberto bolano. anyone else a bolano fan? read anything besides 2666 and savage detectives? this is my first foray into his slightly less heralded stuff.
  19. have to agree here. when you consider even the most surface elements - figgins' off year (or at least his horrific start) and the likely maturation of smoak - the mariners' offense won't be worse than last year. then again, there's no real guarantee that it will improve all that much.
  20. i don't. i'm studying chinese, but i don't know any japanese. i'm sure there must be japanese sources for ebook downloads, each country in the region out here seems to be pretty self-sustaining in terms of making literature available in the local language, including amazon and a number of asian companies offer book deliveries. i'll poke around and see if i can turn anything up. brewtacular - happy to offer info on taipei.
  21. 2 points here. 1) as i think i mentioned, the pavilion is a downhill run of morose psychology. but it's good. mishima keeps it mostly believable and certainly does well to ponder various angles of the human condition. stylistically and tonally, it is very classically japanese. if you like murakami, you ought to give mishima a shot. 2A) i'm also a murakami fan. has the japanese version of norwegian wood hit theaters in america yet? it's here (i live in taipei), but there seem to be no english subtitles anywhere. really frustrating, been waiting for this movie since last year, enduring the delayed release dates. i'll probably have to download it later. 2B) did you know that murakami has a new novel? again, it's been translated into chinese, but it isn't yet available in english. the title is 1Q84 and apparently it's the first of a trilogy. murakami is big all around the region, and the book seems to be making a splash here. english version due in september 2011.
  22. good looking out on bumping this thread, tom. if i had my (dorky) way, it'd be as busy as the beer thread. i'm currently reading two books, a trend that i have occasionally picked up over the past year or so. i'm almost finished with yukio mishima's the temple of the golden pavilion and i'm not too far into fitzgerald's this side of paradise, two very different titles. this is my first mishima, i'd been being stingy because it's hard to find used copies of his stuff, especially living in a non-english speaking country. the book is good, a classically japanese examination of a fixated psyche, but something of a snowball of morose ideas. this side of paradise is a breeze to read and it's been ages since i've read some musty old american aristocracy. other recent reads: netherland by joseph o'neill, the shadow of the sun by ryszard kapuscinski and invisible cities by italo calvino. i'm sure i've whored this before, but i'm on goodreads. at worst it's a good resource for finding new material and remembering what you've read, at best it's a great forum for discussing books. anybody else?
  23. AOL Fanhouse is reporting that the Brewers are dangling Cain. (via MLBTR)
  24. just in case jeter does change area codes, here's a little primer of what it might look like (throws up in mouth a little bit).
  25. kaelin is apparently from nicolet. read this interview with him, in which he says the brewers need to go out and get tim lincecum. yeah, he's one of those brewer fans.
