  1. one of the weakest draft classes in recent history? maybe if you are talking college, but this is one of the best high school classes i can ever remember. now on to him not being arod or griffey how many are? and another thing, those guys were #1 overall picks. you are talking about taking a guy at 7. what kind of reasoning is it to say a guy isn't worth the 7th overall pick on a guy b/c he is not a rodriguez or griffey? the guy is arguably the best position player in the draft. you are nuts if you don't take him at 7 even if he may cost a little extra.
  2. you might think i'm crazy, but one of detwiler or moskos is going to be there and would be a very solid pick for the brewers. if scherzer re-enters the draft i will guarantee that one of them will be there.
  3. not colby, but i have heard he is having a terrible senior season. that will usually drop you pretty quickly.
  4. bumgarner and beaven at 18 and 19 with tim alderson ahead of them? yeah, good call keith. there is no chance josh smoker will be there at 29, and there is no way todd frazier is lasting until 66.
  5. franceour is the comp i have been using over on the cards message board. actually the comp is franceour with the ability to draw a walk. the franceour comp is probably more fair to frazier since braun is probably more of a pure hitter. i see frazier as a .260-.270 hitter with 25-30 homer pop if he reaches his potential. the sizes are also more comparable with franceour and frazier.
  6. colby i've been thinking the same thing about the braun/frazier comp for a while. they are both pretty athletic and played short in college (even though braun slid over to 3rd his junior year). they both have power and can steal some bases. they both project at third, but a lot of people think both of them will end up in right. they both had questions about their swings, people said braun had a hitch and might struggle in higher levels (good call on that one http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif ) and frazier's swing has been called long in the past and he strikes out quite a bit. i don't think frazier is as good as braun, but he is solid in every aspect of the game. darn brewers just swept the cards and now they are thinking about taking my guy at 7. i have been on the moustakas band wagon for the cards' pick at 18 for a while now, but its looking like he will be gone. i think he is the 2nd best hitter in the high school class behind vitters, but i think you might disagree with me and favor heyward. i guess that leaves my list for favorites for the 18th pick at mangini, dominguez, smoker, and frazier.
  7. Jimmie Lee Soloman announced the first round picks on the online show last year
  8. Colby, what can you tell me about DJ Jones? is it just me or does he sound a lot like Colby Rasmus? he is a little more physical than colby was as he weighs 190 lbs, compared to rasmus who was about 175 his senior year. they are both 6'1" lefty swingers and throwers who put up monster numbers as high school seniors in alabama and committed to play for auburn. according to pgcrosschecker's hot list he is hitting .460 with 14 homers and 26 steals. they also say he holds the state record for triples. colby showed more power his senior year hitting 24 homers and had a .484 average, but 14 homers is nothing to sneeze at and he DJ still has a little time to close the gap.
  9. i'll give him a break for being hit in the face, but those numbers are not very impressive for zimmerman. you talk about not taking mills' numbers too seriously b/c of the level of competition, but at least he is dominating the level. zimmerman supposedly has a 95 mph fastball and only has 32 strikeouts in 30.2 innings against D III competition? that is not very impressive. if he is really the 2nd best pitcher in the draft he should be putting up high school type numbers facing the level of competition he is.
  10. colby, i like the jay pick. he may not have much power, but he is a solid hitter and should fill the gaps with plenty of doubles. you can't really argue with getting a guy with his pure hitting skills with the last pick in the 2nd round. i think he'll snap out of his funk, but i am a little worried about his hitch in his swing being the cause of his problems. he recently struck out 7 times in a 3 game stretch and i am wondering if AA pitchers are pounding fastballs in under his hands and he is having trouble catching up. i know the cardinals are really high on him, and derrick goold who writes for the st. louis newspaper says some within the organization believe he could win a batting title. i don't expect him to be that good, but he should at least be a decent 4th outfielder and could be a starter in left if he starts stealing more bases.
  11. mine is that exact pick you were talking about, brett anderson. the cardinals took brad furnish 54th and brett anderson went to the d-backs with the next pick at 55. the cardinals message board was going nuts as soon as the furnish pick was made and we were all saying if you want to take a lefty why don't you take anderson and then the next pick there he goes. now i realize he got a little over slot, but when you can get a first round talent with your 3rd pick you pay the extra money. i guess if they would have spent the money there they wouldn't have been able to get guys like tommy pham, jon edwards, and others that they gave more than slot to in the later rounds, so we will have to see how that works out. i also thought we reached a little for ottavino, but he has been pretty good so far and i think he is better than people were giving him credit for at the time of the draft. chris perez is going to be a steal at 43.
  12. i think corey brown is officially out of his slump as he has hit 3 homers and a double in the last 2 days. on the season he is hitting .383/.503/.850 with 10 doubles, 5 triples, 14 homers, and 13 steals. he has struck out 35 times in 133 at bats, but the rest of his numbers are extremely good.
  13. they updated that list since i made my post. they had guys like burgess and jackson in it ahead of vitters before and i thought they were crazy. obviously they have corrected their mistake.
  14. So what do you think ..... A stud arm with the # 20 pick. i.e. Bumgarner, Smoker, Aumont, Porcello i'm calling it right now, bumgarner to the braves at 14.
  15. Don't be so sure. He has shored up his strike zone a little, but he still has holes in his swing, particularly the outside half of the plate, and can struggle to recognize breaking balls. He's doing a nice job this year, but really he should after such a bad season a year ago which followed a really good sophomore season. He's just outside my top 30 (I don't really rank past 30), which means he is a legitimate first-rounder, but don't forget that he is to be advised by Scott Boras. and corey brown doesn't have holes in his swing? now i know that brown is a toolsy outfielder and laporta is a short righthanded hitting first baseman, but the guy can flat out hit. update: i don't think you can pitch to laporta right now. he went 3-4 today with 2 more homers and now has 8 homeruns in his last 5 games. unbelievable. that brings the season totals to 97 at bats, .433 average, 13 homers, 8 strikeouts. colby, what do you think of pat burrell as a comparison for laporta? matt mangini had a good day today going 3-8 and homering in both ends of a double header. he now has 8 homeruns on the season, already surpassing his total from last year of 7. i know oklahoma st. is a hitter's park, but it looks like his power is coming along.
  16. i got to watch the watson newmann duel over the internet last night as the texas A&M website had a free video feed. watson was a lot more dominant than that line shows. he had 2 outs in the bottom of the 7th and let a couple of guys reach then hung a change and it was hit a long way for a 3 run homer. he was ahead in the count all night and keeping people off balance, but he did hit 4 guys on the night. i have seen him a few times the last couple of years and while i think he has a nice easy delivery, solid fastball, and very good change, but his absolute lack of a breaking ball (or maybe willingness to throw it) turns me off. i think his slider has a chance to be an effective 3rd pitch as he threw a couple pretty good ones, but he seems happy to just keep firing fastballs and mix in a change every once in a while. that's a recipe for getting crushed in the high minors. newmann got absolutely no help from the defense last night as the aggies committed 7 errors on the night. this is the 2nd time i have seen him this year and the story was the same, good stuff, not so good control. there was no radar gun, but it looked like newmann was throwing the harder of the two and his curveball is by far the best breaking ball. his change up is not nearly as good, in fact i can't even remember him throwing one. his delivery is also a little rougher than watson's.
  17. He's the high school version of Andrew Brackman, a big, strong kid with a frame and arsenal that makes scouts drool but he needs a lot of work with his mechanics and learning how to pitch. His arm works really well, as I know a lot of the PG scouts have been impressed by how loose he throws. if you are going to take a guy like that, wouldn't you rather get the guy who is 3 years younger that you can take the time you need to iron things out? that's why i don't like raw college guys at all. if you want to take the unrefined power arm, i would take the high school guy every time.
  18. how hot is matt laporta? 2 more homers tonight and 6 in the last 4 games. for the season he is hitting .419 with 11 bombs and only 8 strikeouts. colby, i know you just updated your top 30 and he wasn't in it, but i see no way he is not a first round pick come june. in other deja vu news, kyle russell hit a homer today. give him 17 on the year in a grand total of 108 at bats also known as 1 homer every 6.35 at bats. i know he is only a draft eligible sophomore, but unless he completly falls apart down the stretch, he has to go pro. i don't see how there is any way he can put up these kind of numbers again. after david price left the game tonight, vandy decided to let casey weathers pitch until the game was over and he did. he went 4.1 shutout innings on 2 hits, 2 walks, and striking out 7 to pick up the win over #1 south carolina.
  19. RHP Adam Ottavino and OF Darryl Jones of the Cardinals organization may return to the MWL. it looks like ottavino will be starting out in the FSL, but jones will be there. former first rounder tyler herron should be in the rotation along with blake king and possibly gary daley. jon edwards is also a possibility for the outfield.
  20. if i was the brewers picking at #7 this is how i would line up my draft board. 1. david price 2. matt wieters 3. daniel moskos (if you believe he can start) 4. josh vitters 5. jayson heyward 6. rick porcello 7. matt harvey i know you guys are tired of high school pitchers, but i don't think you can pass on porcello or harvey. some of you may want to move burgess up ahead of them, but i think he is going to have a problem with contact unless he tones that swing down. i can't believe pgcrosschecker doesn't have vitters in their top 10, he is going to be a stud.
  21. another guy on that UNC team to watch is dustin ackley. he has been absolutely murdering the ball so far this year. a freshman hitting .495 through 101 at bats is unbelievable. the comp i have made with horton in the past is adam kennedy. a guy that will hit .280 with about 10 homers and 25 doubles and play solid defense at 2nd. i think he will draw more walks than kennedy does, but maybe not steal 20 bases like adam did early in his career. do you think that is a valid comparison?
  22. matt laporta had a monster game today going 4-4 with a double and 2 homeruns. he is now hitting .412 with 8 homers and only 8 strikeouts. that is an albert pujols-like HR/K rate. he has got to be hitting himself back into the first round this year. zach cozart who has had a pretty down year also had a big game today going 5-5 with a homer, 4 runs scored, and 4 RBIs, and a steal. that should bump him up over .300. hopefully he can build on this and finish strong.
  23. what are your thoughts on a guy like daniel moskos who many believe could also be a starter? while you believe that closers are made, they are usually made from guys who have great stuff. moskos has great stuff, especially for a lefty, isn't he the type of guy that would typically be made into a closer?
  24. speaking of guys that could hit 25-30 homers, kyle russell went deep again today giving him 2 on the weekend and 15 on the year. what a power show he is putting on this year. last year's homerun sensation kellen kulbacki knocked a pair of homers today and now has 7 on the year.
  25. colby, you really think corey brown could be a top 10 pick? even with all of the homers, i just don't see someone taking him that high.
