  1. corey brown continues to tear the cover off the ball for oklahoma st. tonight he went 3-5, hit his 11th homer of the year, scored 4 times, drove in 3, drew a walk, and perhaps the best part he didn't strike out. colby, i know he strikes out a ton, but he is showing some of the best power in the country and is a pretty athletic outfielder. how high do you think he could go?
  2. some of us cardinals fans think arrieta is going to be the cards' pick at 18 b/c of their preference for college righties. i am hoping they pass and take a bat, but it wouldn't surprise me at all.
  3. Julio Borbon made his first start of the year yesterday after several pinch hitting appearances and went 3-5 with a pair of doubles. Obviously the time off didn't hurt his bat. He's still not back in the field quite yet as he played DH in this game, but his ankle must be feeling well enough to run the bases.
  4. someone said on minorleagueball.com that clay buchholz did the same thing when he was in school. is this true? and if it is the red sox didn't seem to have a problem taking him in the first round.
  5. b/c you take the best overall player, and while i think braun will be very good, he hasn't proven anything at the major league level yet. you can always move guys later and you never know who will be on your team in 4 years when vitters will be ready.
  6. do you really think arrieta is good enough to go 7th overall? you said you didn't think detwiler was good enough for 7th overall, and personally i think he is better than arrieta. their stuff is similar and detwiler is a lefty, plus arrieta is maxed out physically and detwiler still has a ton of projection left in him. arrieta just doesn't have that elite stuff to go that high and he doesn't really have very good command for a guy that is more of a polish pitcher. i know you guys are tired of taking high school pitchers, but there is going to be a high school guy at 7 that has much better stuff than arrieta. i also think at least one of heyward and vitters will be there also and it will be very hard to pass on one of them to take a guy like arrieta who is at best a #3 starter.
  7. if i am not mistaken, i think most of donaldson's errors have come when he has played 3rd base this year. corey brown and josh donaldson are off to great starts, but what about the season kyle russell is putting together? he hit 2 more homers today and now has 13 for the season in only 89 at bats. he is not just hitting homers as he is hittin .393 overall. his one weak point, like corey brown, is that he is still striking out quite a bit with 23 and only 16 walks, but i think people will ignore that to get lefty power like this kid has.
  8. i was watching the TCU game, and they actually took a chance when they pulled arrieta. at the time he was pulled it was only a 1 run lead with the tying run on 3rd and one out. sam demel came in and struck out the next 2 batters then TCU scored all of their runs in the bottom of the inning. arrieta looked pretty good to me. he has a smooth and easy delivery and has good control of both 2 and 4 seam fastballs, a good slider, and a workable changeup. the only velocity reading i heard the announcers say was 93 on a fastball. he looks like a workhorse and should be a good innings eating #3 starter.
  9. that's too bad, the guy can't catch a break.
  10. how about the donnie hume, james simmons matchup tonight? hume took a no hitter into the 9th, but gave up back to back hits to open the inning and was taken out. of course the reliever let both score to mess up his line a little, but still a great game. simmons 9 innings, 3 hits, 1 run, 2 walks, 9 strikeouts hume 8 innings, 2 hits, 2 runs, 1 walk, 10 strikeouts i watched the game as they had it free on cstv.com and both guys looked good. simmons has very good control of both a 4-seam and 2-seam fastball and also has a really good changeup. something that may hold him back is he doesn't have much of a breaking ball. hume also commanded his fastball very well and was working with a pretty good change up as well. he dominated with pretty much just those 2 pitches until about the 7th when he started throwing his slider more and it also looked like a solid pitch.
  11. colby, how did jack rye look for FSU?
  12. i think i jinxed laporta, he struck out tonight against florida st, but hey 1 strikeout every 30 at bats isn't too shabby either. by the way he was 1-3 with a double
  13. LaPorta through 7 games: 27 at bats .481 avg 4 homers 5 walks 2 HBP 0 strikeouts 0 strikeouts in 27 at bats is very impressive for a power hitter like LaPorta. it looks like the power is back, you say he has improved his defense, and if he keeps making contact like he is now he will shoot right back up the draft board.
  14. cstv all-access has some free games and this is one of them. i think you have to sign up for a log-in, but its free. they also had the vandy game yesterday and it might be archived if you want to watch it. it would be a good thing to sign up for. i think they also have TCU for free next weekend so you can take a look at arrietta.
  15. ok its not just me. you do know you can watch that vandy/asu game for free don't you?
  16. is the gametracker not working for anyone else this weekend?
  17. cordero is the closer now
  18. not a brewer fan, but i think it is a good question. while we know that the rankings now will look nothing like the rankings when all of this gets sorted out, looking at your rankings, most of the guys are high school pitchers. after taking guys like rogers and jeffress recently, it would seem to make sense to take someone who would move faster. i don't think the brewers would really like the idea of taking another high school pitcher, so you may not be taking the "best player available" anyway. if fields dominates and stays healthy this year i would see nothing wrong with reaching a little bit to take him. you don't draft for need, but it seems like you guys are pretty much set in the rotation and have some very solid prospects on the way. you are also pretty young in the field. a guy like josh fields could be that electric 8th inning guy that puts you over the top.
  19. thanks for the info RC, i heard kiker had a workout with the cardinals is that true? and if so how did he do? also what is cory hearing about the draft and has he had any recent workouts?
  20. clemens and schilling pretty much get by on just a heater and a split. now i'm not saying that morrow is either of these guys, but he has similar heat its just whether he can have the same kind of control.
  21. this thread is pretty funny to me. i'm a cardinals fan and i am getting tired of us taking college pitchers in the first round b/c they seem to never develop for us. here are the college pitchers the cardinals have taken in the first round the last several years, tell me how many you see in the majors. 1999 Chance Caple Nick Stocks 2000 Blake Williams 2001 Justin Pope 2004 Chris Lambert (flew through A-ball, but really struggling in AA last 2 years) 2005 Mark McCormick (great stuff, no idea where it is going) now i know there is a difference between the back of the first round where caple, williams, and pope were taken and the supplemental round for stocks and mccormick, from #5 like mark rogers but just b/c they are college players doesn't make them a safer bet. you may say it is just b/c the cardinals have no idea how to develop talent and i would agree to an extent, but you would think they would have got lucky and atleast one of these guys would have made just based on sheer numbers.
  22. how would you compare kiker with travis wood?
  23. hunter is a pretty good comp, but i see him more as mike cameron. cameron, like hunter, has very good defensive skills and good speed, but i think cameron represents the type of hitter that stubbs is better. torii hunter actually hit .289 one year, and i don't think stubbs will hit for that high of an average (even though that isn't that high). cameron is more of a .260 hitter with 25 homers and 30 steals in his prime and i think stubbs is capable of putting up similar numbers.
  24. daniel bard throws a complete game shutout allowing 4 hits walking none and striking out 8. where did that come from? looks like he might be back to the form he had at the beginning of the year.
  25. looks like USC shouldn't have gone and retired Kennedy's number before the season started
