Williams with his worst inning in a while (34 pitches) to start the game: Kane County Top of the 1st Chuck Taylor singles on a line drive to center fielder Brandon Diaz. With Ildemaro Vargas batting, Chuck Taylor steals (3) 2nd base. Ildemaro Vargas walks. With Cody Regis batting, wild pitch by Devin Williams, Chuck Taylor to 3rd. Ildemaro Vargas to 2nd. Cody Regis reaches on a fielder's choice out, first baseman Alan Sharkey to third baseman Dustin DeMuth. Chuck Taylor out at 3rd. Ildemaro Vargas to 3rd. Cody Regis to 2nd. With Marty Herum batting, wild pitch by Devin Williams, Ildemaro Vargas scores. Cody Regis to 3rd. With Marty Herum batting, wild pitch by Devin Williams, Cody Regis scores. Marty Herum triples (5) on a fly ball to right fielder Elvis Rubio. Colin Bray doubles (14) on a fly ball to left fielder Mitch Meyer. Marty Herum scores. Michael Perez pops out to first baseman Alan Sharkey in foul territory. With Henry Castillo batting, Colin Bray steals (14) 3rd base. Henry Castillo strikes out swinging. Interesting note from last night's game I forgot to share but one of the Kane County pitchers charting pitches and chatting us up noticed that the Rattlers were able to steal signs from the C. The runner at 2nd base would put his arm up for "breaking ball" and leave it down for "FB". After calling 10 pitches in a row from the stands based on what the Rattlers were doing out at 2B they tried to get the attention of the guys in the dugout but didn't have success. I was wondering why they just didn't walk over there and say something even though they were charting pitches, I would have thought charting pitches could wait... nice guys though. Today's KC starter Wei-Chieh Huang was working hard on his chart with his interpreter nearby, he looks like he's 14, hard to believe he's putting up video game numbers for the D-Backs.

Garza to DL, right shoulder tendinitis; Knebel recalled
TheCrew07 replied to trwi7's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
Tendinitis in a pitcher at mid season doesn't make any sense, the muscles and tendons are well conditioned by the end of spring training. Elbow tendinitis usually equals TJ surgery... there has a to a be a tear or loose body floating around in a joint to cause that kind of irritation in those well conditioned areas. Shoulder tendinitis... well that worries me. Shoulder inflammation worries me because shoulder repairs aren't anywhere near as successful as TJ surgery. -
Southern notes: Reed follows his own route Brewers outfielder breaking out with Biloxi after bypassing Ole Miss By Guy Curtright / Special to MiLB.com http://www.milb.com/assets/images/2/5/6/135052256/cuts/Reed_960_3vlmcpk8_lm31uzmk.jpg Michael Reed has five homers and 40 RBIs in 72 games for the Double-A Shuckers. (Kevin Pataky/MiLB.com) Michael Reed didn't follow his father's athletic path or end up at his dad's college. The Milwaukee Brewers are thankful for both. Reed bypassed attending the University of Mississippi, where he had a football legacy, for an over-slot bonus of $500,000, and the fifth-round choice in the 2011 Draft is working on a breakout season with Biloxi. The strong-armed right fielder started in the Southern League All-Star Game and had a .288 average and 22 stolen bases through 72 games while accumulating 22 extra-base hits and 40 RBIs. Reed, 22, had also walked 37 times, giving him a .376 on-base percentage to go with his .434 slugging mark. The Brewers' No. 17 prospect is having his best year so far, and there's a simple reason for it -- he's been able to stay healthy. Reed had hamstring issues in 2013, then missed time last year with an oblique strain before playing through a stress reaction in his left foot. "I put in a lot of work over the winter with a trainer and I think it has paid off," he said. "Sometimes you forget about working your soft tissue and small muscles. That is something we concentrated on." Reed doesn't have the height or bulk of his father. Benton, who is 6-foot-5 and played at 265 pounds, was drafted by the Miami Dolphins in 1986 out of the University of Mississippi and started three games at defensive end for the New England Patriots the next season. "I stopped playing football after my sophomore year in high school," said the younger Reed, who carries 200 pounds on his six-foot frame. "I knew my future was baseball." He looked like he was headed to his father's alma mater, though, until the Brewers convinced him otherwise. "I wanted to get started in pro ball as long as the offer was there," said the graduate of Leander High School in Cedar Park, Texas. Reed had always drawn a lot of walks and he led the Class A Advanced Florida State League with an on-base percentage of .396 last year. But his real breakout came this May, when he hit .380 with three homers, 17 RBIs and eight stolen bases in 23 games. That was while the Shuckers were still wandering through the Southern League on an eventual 54-game road trip that didn't end until June 6, when MGM Park in Biloxi finally opened. The Shuckers ended up winning the first-half South Division title anyway. "It's nice to finally call some place home, but we really bonded on and off the field those first two months," he said. "The chemistry on this team is like no other team I've ever been on." Milwaukee views Reed as a potential five-tool player, although the power has yet to come. "I think the doubles will eventually become homers," the right-handed hitter said. "The Brewers want me to stay with my line-drive approach." Milwaukee certainly likes his selectivity at the plate. Reed drew 71 walks in 2013 while in the Class A Midwest League and 78 last season with Brevard County. "I've always had a good eye at the plate," he said. "I think it came naturally, and it's a big part of my success." Although he didn't end up in the SEC, Reed finally is playing in Mississippi -- although at the opposite end of the state from Oxford. "This ballpark is great and I've got a ton of family in the state," he said. "There has been someone here almost every series. It's been a lot of fun." In brief Moving up: Chattanooga won the North Division first-half title with four of Minnesota's top seven prospects, but none remained with the Lookouts by the Fourth of July. Shortstop Jorge Polanco, batting .301 with 14 stolen bases, was the most recent to leave, joining right-handed pitcher Jose Berrios at Triple-A Rochester. Center fielder Byron Buxton and third baseman Miguel Sano -- the Twins' top two prospects -- made the move all the way to Minnesota. Berrios, the Twins' No. 3 prospect, led the Southern League with eight victories and 92 strikeouts. Polanco is ranked as the No. 7 prospect for Minnesota. Still streaking: Right-hander Steve Janas blanked Biloxi for 5 2/3 innings in his debut with Mississippi on July 3 to extend his scoreless streak to 28 2/3 frames. He allowed three hits, walked none and struck out three in the no-decision. Atlanta's No. 27 prospect was 5-0 with a 0.49 ERA in six starts for Class A Advanced Carolina but missed seven weeks after being shaken up in the Mudcats' bus crash in early May. Janas, 23, was a sixth-round pick by Atlanta in the 2013 Draft out of Kennesaw State University in Georgia. Canada bound: Tennessee will be without center fielder Albert Almora Jr. and first baseman Dan Vogelbach for much of July as they play for Team USA at the Pan Am Games in Toronto (full roster). Almora, the Chicago Cubs' No. 3 prospect, was hitting .249, while No. 13 prospect Vogelbach had a .284 batting average. The Pan Am competition is July 10-19, but players left their Minor League teams over the Fourth of July weekend. The other Southern League players on Team USA are pitchers Brian Ellington of Jacksonville and Jake Barrett of Mobile.

Rattlers win third straight with a walkoff in extra innings By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers http://www.milb.com/assets/images/9/1/6/135184916/cuts/7_6_Sharkey_Reaction_WEB_7r3yy9fd_58qz62cb.jpg Alan Sharkey reacts after scoring the winning run in the bottom of the eleventh inning on Monday night against the Kane County Cougars. (Wisconsin Timber Rattlers/Ann Mollica) GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers ended the ten-game winning streak of the Kane County Cougars with a 5-4 win in eleven innings at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium. Alan Sharkey homered, drove in three runs and scored on the game-winning infield single by Tucker Neuhaus to give the Rattlers their third straight win. Kane County (46-34 overall, 10-2 second half) took the lead in the top of the third inning. Victor Reyes doubled to start the frame. Chuck Taylor doubled off the wall in left with one out to drive in Reyes for a 1-0 lead. Wisconsin (28-54, 5-7) tied the game in the bottom of the fifth. Sthervin Matos lined a solo homer of the wall in center with two outs and evened the game 1-1. Greg McCall followed with a single and Tucker Neuhaus doubled to put runners on second and third, but Nick Baker got a strikeout to end the Rattlers rally. The Cougars would go back in front in the top of the sixth. Rattlers starting pitcher Zach Hirsch hit Cody Regis to start the inning. Regis moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and took third on a sharp single to left by Michael Perez. Wisconsin would go to the bullpen and call Zach Cooper in to face Joe Munoz. Cooper got Munoz to send a grounder in the hole at short, but the ball was misplayed. Regis scored on the play and Perez took third. Pinch-hitter Henry Bonilla was at the plate when Munoz took off for second and drew a throw. Perez broke for the plate and beat the return throw to give the Cougars a 3-1 lead. Kane County went up 4-1 when another grounder to short was misplayed to let Munoz score. Khris Davis, playing in his final game on a rehabilitation assignment from the Milwaukee Brewers, drew a walk from reliever Cody Geyer in a sudden rainstorm with one out in the bottom of the sixth inning. The game was halted after Davis reached first base to allow the tarp to be placed on the field. The delay lasted for 28 minutes. When the game resumed, Geyer lost the strike zone. Dustin DeMuth walked on four pitches. Elvis Rubio drew a walk to load the bases. Sharkey walked on a 3-1 pitch from Geyer to force in pinch-runner Gregory Munoz, who took over for Davis on the base paths after the delay. Sharkey brought the Rattlers back to even in the bottom of the eighth inning against Jose Martinez. Rubio drew a walk with one out and Sharkey had a 3-1 count again. The Rattlers first baseman lined this 3-1 pitch down the line in right and the ball stayed fair as it cleared the wall for a game-tying, two run home run. The homer, Sharkey's second of the season, was his first at home. Kodi Medeiros, who came on in relief in the top of the eighth inning, kept the Cougars off the scoreboard, allowed one hit, and struck out three over three innings. Luke Curtis tossed a 1-2-3 top of the eleventh and the Rattlers offense went to work in the bottom of the inning. Once again, it was Sharkey in the thick of the action. Sharkey drew a leadoff walk against Luis Ramirez. Sthervin Matos reached on an infield single and Greg McCall walked to load the bases. Neuhaus was next and he sent a slow roller up the first base line. Ramirez fielded the ball near the line and made a back-handed flip to the plate. The ball popped away from Perez at the plate and Sharkey scored the winning run to give Wisconsin its first walkoff win of the season. The teams wrap up Fox Cities portion of their series on Tuesday afternoon. Devin Williams (2-4, 2.92) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Kane County has pushed Wei-Chieh Huang (3-1, 1.51) back from Monday to Tuesday. Game time is 12:05pm. If you are one of the first 500 fans to enter the stadium for this game, you will receive a special noisemaker from 103.9, WVBO. Show your business card when you purchase a ticket and for $13.50 you will receive a box seat ticket, a beverage and your choice of brat or hot dog. The offer is also available to senior citizens (55 & older) courtesy of Baker Tilly, WVBO, and AM1280 WNAM. The broadcast may also be heard on Tune In Radio and IHeartRadio. Subscribers to MiLB.TV may watch the game on that platform. HOME RUNS: WIS: Sthervin Matos (7th, 0 on in 5th inning off Nick Baker, 2 out) Alan Sharkey (2nd, 1 on in 8th inning off Jose Martinez, 1 out) WP: Luke Curtis (5-1) LP: Luis Ramirez (1-1) TIME: 3:21 (:28 delay) ATTN: 802 Wisconsin Boxscore MPH for all pitchers while I was at the game previously posted. I took the college kid I've been working with and after watching Kodi Medeiros pitch all he talked about the rest of the night was "I've never seen a FB move like that"... so yea, his movement is even more impressive sitting behind home plate. Have I mentioned that Alan Sharkey is a pretty good 1B? If not I've done him a disservice because I've been meaning to discuss it. Kane County tried to challenge Dustin DeMuth but he made all of the plays, however Blake Allemand booted 2 rather routine balls at SS. It's too bad Sthervin Matos (3-5,HR) hasn't been able to find consistency because his tools are pretty good, his routes in the OF need some work though. Tucker Neuhaus (3-5,2B) had been in the midst of a horrible slump but had a slump busting game out of the 9 spot in the order. Wisconsin Recap

I've watched a ton of women's basketball since my dad coached it, my sister played through college, and now coaches herself... and it's come an incredibly long way in last 20-25 years. In some respects the women play a better brand of basketball, it's more team orientated, not a game of pure of athleticism and isolation like how the upper levels of men's basketball have been progressing. I'm not a soccer fan at all but I can definitely see how the women's game could be viewed as "more pure" for lack of a better term.

As far the pitchers listed in the previous couple of posts, not one of them was a potential Ace. Top prospect pitchers sure, but not at the same level and Syndergaard is now. Scherzer as an example took years to grow into his role and early on in his tenure with AZ he was looking more like a #3 than the #2 that most people thought he was on draft day. Sometimes prospects are exactly what we thought they were, sometimes they get much better than expected, sometimes much worse, but that's why numbers matter. We can never really predict what will go on in any player's head, so we need more legitimate prospects to cover the full spectrum. For every Gallardo there is a Manny Parra and Zach Braddock; and while prospects carry risk, it's easy to mitigate the risk with numbers. A veteran player will carry a different kind of risk, for a much greater monetary investment, and it's not realistic to attempt to mitigate that risk through numbers, there aren't enough 25 man roster spots for that. If you were a GM would give up 6+ years of a 22 year old potential #1 pitcher for 2+ years of a 29 year old all-star catcher? I wouldn't, maybe there is a GM who would make that trade, but I doubt it, though I do agree that anything is possible. However, ATL doesn't doesn't have that kind of prospect, few teams do, so if they want Lucroy what's the best possible deal we could get? So really the question is this, "is a getting 6 years of 2, 3, and likely a 4-5" type starting pitchers worth 2+ years of Lucroy? My answer would be yes, if you can get some additional throw ins that could provide MLB value, the more the better. There will be Melvin's ideal trade, and then there are going to be the realistic trade offers that come through. Considering the fact that there are very few prospect pitchers who legitimately profile as #1s, there aren't going to be that many potential deals from the start, then those teams have to be willing to trade for the players he's willing to give up. I think getting back 3 pitchers from any organization with ultimate upsides of #3s or better is wonderful value to acquire. Much like the draft, I'm chasing a rotation full of #2s, I'm not looking to get "Aces". Finally if pitching was so easy to find, the Brewers wouldn't have floundered about with all of these averagish and aging FA pitcher acquisitions for years. Young impact is not easy to find, in truth there are maybe 2 or 3 deals for that kind of pitching in a given year.

I could see that but the flip side argument would be he obviously needs more innings to get more work on his command/control. How much is too much? I don't have the answer, I just find myself thinking it would be nice for him get around 100 innings this year since he needs the repetitions. Kodi is a pretty easy to kid to root for so I find myself getting impatient... if the plan was 80 innings or so, why not keep him in short season ball then? I really like this current Rattler rotation but I do get the health side, it will be interesting to follow.

Rattlers hang on to beat Beloit By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers http://www.milb.com/assets/images/1/0/8/134898108/cuts/Ponce_WEB_d94dt7xs_2dg2lare.jpg Cody Ponce, the second round pick of the Milwaukee Brewers in the 2015 draft, pitched four scoreless innings and struck out three for the Rattlers in his Midwest League debut. GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning against the Beloit Snappers Sunday afternoon at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium. It was enough. The Timber Rattlers beat the Snappers 3-2 for their second win in a row. Brandon Diaz started the Wisconsin rally with a walk and a stolen base. Khris Davis singled sharply to left with one out and Diaz could only make it to third base. Dustin DeMuth followed with a single to right to drive in Diaz and an error on the play allowed the ball to roll to the track. Davis scored all the way from first and DeMuth took third. Carlos Leal connected on a double to drive in DeMuth and the Rattlers (27-54 overall, 4-7 second half) were up 3-0. Cody Ponce, the second round pick of the Milwaukee Brewers in the 2015 draft, made his Midwest League debut on Sunday as Wisconsin's starting pitcher. He allowed one hit, walked two, and struck out three over four scoreless innings. David Burkhalter took over for Ponce to start the top of the fifth inning and he faced the minimum over his first three innings. Beloit (31-50, 5-6) got on the scoreboard in the top of the eighth. Iolana Akau hit a leadoff home run against Burkhalter to cut Wisconsin's lead to 3-1. In the ninth, the Snappers made it interesting. Burkhalter got the first out, but issued a walk and gave up a single to put two runners on base. Left-hander Tyler Linehan was summoned from the bullpen, but walked lefty Sandber Pimentel to load the bases. Linehan would strikeout left-handed Justin Higley for the second out before leaving in favor of right-hander Gian Rizzo who was called in to face Akau. However, Rizzo hit the right-hand hitting Akau on the first pitch he threw to force in a run to make it 3-2. That also brought left-handed Shawn Duinkerk to the plate with the game on the line. Rizzo fell behind Duinkerk 2-1, but got the Beloit right fielder to popout to third to end the game. Burkhalter allowed two runs on three hits with a walk and three strikeouts over 4-1/3 innings to pick up his second win of the season. The Timber Rattlers welcome the Kane County Cougars to Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium on Monday night. Zach Hirsch (2-4, 2.98) is the scheduled starting pitcher for Wisconsin. Wei-Chieh Huang (3-1, 1.51) is set to start for the Cougars. Kane County has won ten games in a row heading into Monday's game. Game time is 7:05pm. The first 500 fans to attend this game will receive a magnet featuring Milwaukee Brewers outfield prospect Monte Harrison presented by Lamers Bus Lines. This is magnet three in a series of four that are being given away this season. Purchase an entrée at any Qdoba location in Appleton, Neenah, or Oshkosh on Monday and receive a ticket to any Monday home game during the 2015 season. If you can't make it out to the ballpark, there are several ways to catch the action. MyNEW 32's Sports Showdown will televise the game starting at 7:00pm. The radio broadcast is on AM1280, WNAM starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:45pm. The broadcast may also be heard on Tune In Radio and IHeartRadio. HOME RUN: BEL: Iolana Akau (1st, 0 on in 8th inning off David Burkhalter, 0 out) WP: David Burkhalter (2-5) LP: Daniel Gossett (3-8) SAVE: Gian Rizzo (2) TIME: 2:44 ATTN: 2,781 Rattler Radio Postgame Post – July 5, 2015 A note on Khris Davis' rehab extending for 1 more day, Cody Ponce's interview was interesting for the first 2 minutes, if you want some nuggets on something other than Davis skip to the 4:20 mark of the Erickson interview, it will be worth your time. Wisconsin Boxscore Cody Ponce's debut was almost exactly what I expected and that doesn't happen much. He's gone 2, 3, and now 4 innings, Erickson hints at the innings plan for Ponce in his interview. I missed the game, I usually have other baseball commitments on Sundays but the Rattler bullpen hasn't exactly been of the shutdown variety lately, the 9th was nearly a disaster, but it worked out. David Burkhalter was OK, he's been better. Just 5 hits for the offense and no one had more than 1, but Carlos Leal (1-3,2B,BB) had a nice day and has pushed his AVE back up to .310. Leal takes some walks too, his OBP is a very nice .375, I'm still somewhat amazed at how productive he's been without a Rookie ball indoctrination. To step right into full season and perform at a high level... well that's been pretty rare for in the Brewer system of late. You won't find him on any leaderboards though as he doesn't have enough ABs to qualify statistically. A couple of weeks ago I was longing to get Leal and Greg McCall in the lineup together, Erickson has been doing much more of that lately. Wisconsin Recap

Rattlers rally to beat Beloit Victory ends six-game losing streak By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers http://www.milb.com/assets/images/7/9/2/134788792/cuts/7_4_Diaz_WEB_5q2pshy9_dufimbrw.jpg Brandon Diaz went 3-for-5 with 3RBI on Saturday night against the Beloit Snappers. (Wisconsin Timber Rattlers/Ann Mollica) GRAND CHUTE, WI - On Saturday night, the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers had an early lead and lost it against the Beloit Snappers for the third night in a row. But Wisconsin rallied to retake the lead late and held on for an 8-5 win over their in-state rivals at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium. The victory ended Wisconsin's six-game losing streak. Brandon Diaz, who would figure into Wisconsin's rally in the seventh inning, started the Rattlers half of the first with a single. He would score later in the inning on single by Carlos Leal. The Rattlers (26-54 overall, 3-7 second half) plated two more runs in the bottom of the second. Alan Sharkey reached on an error and Sthervin Matos singled. Diaz and Blake Allemand followed the first out of the inning with consecutive RBI singles and Wisconsin was up 3-0. Sharkey delivered a two-out triple in the bottom of the fifth to drive Leal home from first base with two outs and Wisconsin was up 4-0. The Snappers (31-49, 5-5) were quiet for the first five innings against Wisconsin starter Angel Ventura as they had just four hits. That changed in the sixth. Ventura allowed a single to Joe Bennie and walked the next two batters to load the bases. Justin Higley was next and he singled to drive in a pair of runs to cut Wisconsin's lead in half. Higley's single also knocked Ventura out of the game. Luke Curtis entered the game for Wisconsin and struck out the first batter he faced, but a single by Shawn Duinkerk loaded the bases. Tim Proudfoot knocked in the tying runs with a check-swing, bloop single to right just inside the line. The hit also moved Duinkerk around to third base. James Harris gave the Snappers the lead with a sacrifice fly to right-center that was deep enough to score Duinkerk. The Rattlers responded in the seventh inning. Elvis Rubio blooped a popup to shallow right that was just out of the reach of a diving Duinkerk. Rubio saw the ball deflect back towards the infield and hustled into second with a double. Sharkey drew a walk and that was all for Beloit reliever Cody Stull. Dominique Vattuone entered and walked Sthervin Matos on four pitches to load the bases for Tucker Neuhaus. Neuhaus slapped a 1-0 pitch from the side-arming right-hander into left field to drive in Rubio with the tying run. That would bring Diaz to the plate. Diaz lined a single to center to score both Sharkey and Matos and the Rattlers were back in front 7-5. Curtis, who had worked a scoreless top of the seventh, got the first out of the eighth and made way for Tyler Linehan. The lefty retired the next two batters to let the Rattlers try to add on a run in the bottom of the eighth. That is exactly what happened as Dustin DeMuth lined an opposite-field homer to left to start the Wisconsin eighth. DeMuth's fifth home run of the year gave the Rattlers an 8-5 lead. Linehan worked a 1-2-3 ninth to close out the Wisconsin victory. Diaz went 3-for-5 with a runs scored and three RBI to pace Wisconsin's twelve-hit attack. Sharkey was on base five times on Saturday night as he reached on an error, three walks, and the triple. Khris Davis, in game four of his five-game rehabilitation assignment with Wisconsin from the Milwaukee Brewers, went 0-for-5. Davis is scheduled to play again on Sunday for the Timber Rattlers in the last game of his rehab. The final game of the series is Sunday afternoon. Cody Ponce, the 2nd round pick of the Brewers in the 2015 draft, will make his Midwest League debut as the starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Beloit has named Daniel Gossett (3-7, 5.42) as their starter. Game time is 1:05pm.
