Snappers beat Rattlers in a walkoff in game two By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers http://www.milb.com/assets/images/8/6/8/127659868/cuts/5_May30_BrandonDiaz_WEB_1md5mwle_ktcp8wju.jpg Brandon Diaz went 3-for-6 with two runs and two RBI in Sunday's doubleheader at Beloit. (Wisconsin Timber Rattlers/Ann Mollica) BELOIT, WI - Trent Gilbert singled with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning to lead the Beloit Snappers to a 3-2 win over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers in game two of a Father's Day doubleheader at Pohlman Field. The Timber Rattlers (23-47) took the lead in the top of the third inning. Brandon Diaz doubled with one out to get into scoring position. Sthervin Matos knocked in Diaz with a two-out single to left for the 1-0 lead. Beloit (26-44) tied the game in the bottom of the fourth inning. Joe Bennie doubled with two outs. Jose Brizuela followed with a double to right to score Bennie with the tying run. The Snappers took the lead with a two out rally in the bottom of the fifth. Rattlers starting pitcher Devin Williams retied the first two batters he faced in the inning, but hit James Harris on an 0-2 pitch. Harris stole second with Gilbert at the plate. Then, Gilbert hit a grounder to first that was misplayed to an error to let Harris score the go-ahead run. Alan Sharkey singled to start the Wisconsin seventh and was at third base with two outs as the tying run. Diaz smacked a single to center to drive in Sharkey with the tying run. Diaz was 3-for-6 with two runs and two RBI in the doubleheader. Wisconsin went to Joshua Torres in the bottom of the seventh inning. He walked Justin Higley to start the inning. Higley stole second and wound up on third base after an errant throw. Torres walked the next two batters to load the bases. Gilbert ended the game with a clean single through a 5-man infield to give the Snappers a 3-2 win. The victory ended Beloit's eight game losing streak. The loss ended Wisconsin's bid for a three-game sweep of the Snappers to end the first half. The Timber Rattlers will be off for the Midwest League All-Star Break until Thursday, June 25 when they host the Clinton LumberKings at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium at 7:05pm. Thursday night is the first of two consecutive Peanut Free Nights hosted by the Timber Rattlers. Thursday is also Lego Night with the first 1,000 fans to attend the game receiving a special OYO Mini Figurine featuring former Timber Rattler and current Milwaukee Brewer Khris Davis courtesy of Elite Smiles Dental. A Miller Park made out of Legos will be on display, too. A 95.9 KISS-FM Thirsty Thursday means 16oz soda, beer, and Arty's Old Fashioned drinks are available for just $2. If you can't make it out to the game on Thursday, there are several ways to catch the action. Time Warner Cable SportsChannel will televise the game starting at 7:00pm. The radio broadcast is on AM1280, WNAM starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:45. The broadcast may also be heard on Tune In Radio and IHeartRadio. Subscribers to MiLB.TV can see the game that way. WP: Koby Guana (1-0) LP: Joshua Torres (0-5) TIME: 2:09 ATTN: 2,042 Wisconsin Game 2 Boxscore Dammit! The T-Rats needed a sweep here to go 6-6 on the road trip, that would have been a nice step for this squad. Regardless Devin Williams pitched well here, with the Williams and Zach Hirsch additions to the rotation I'm actually looking forward to the second half. Brandon Diaz was highlighted in the game story, Jose Pena (2-3) and Alan Sharkey (2-2,BB) had the multi-hit games for the Rattlers. Wisconsin Game 2 Recap

Timber Rattlers take game one in Beloit By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers http://www.milb.com/assets/images/0/8/8/118574088/cuts/Angel_Ventura_Article_Photo_zqt03vc9_xuiy982s.jpg Angel Ventura allowed one run over five innings and earned his third win of the season as Wisconsin beat Beloit 4-2 in game one of Sunday's doubleheader at Pohlman Field. (Wisconsin Timber Rattlers/Ann Mollica) BELOIT, WI - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers defeated the Beloit Snappers 4-2 in game one of a doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Pohlman Field. Angel Ventura allowed one run over five innings to pick up the win. Wisconsin (23-46) got on the scoreboard first. Brandon Diaz was at first with one out in the top of the third inning. Tucker Neuhaus hit a grounder that looked to be a double play, but the ball was misplayed for an error and Diaz wound up on third base. Francisco Castillo drove in Diaz with a double for a 1-0 lead. Elvis Rubio followed with an RBI grounder and Wisconsin was up 2-0. Justin Higley got the Snappers (25-44) on the board of the bottom of the third inning as the leadoff hitter. The Beloit right fielder pulled a 3-2 pitch from Ventura over the wall in right for his second home run of the season Wisconsin got that run back in the top of the fourth inning. Diaz drew a bases loaded walk to force in a run and the Rattlers were up 3-1. Elvis Rubio doubled to start the Wisconsin fifth inning and he moved to third on a ground out by Dustin DeMuth. Jose Pena knocked in Rubio with a sacrifice fly and the Rattlers extended their lead to 4-1. Ventura allowed two hits with four strikeouts over five innings before turning the game over to Luis Ortega. Ortega retired the Snappers in order in the sixth. The seventh was a different story. The Snappers loaded the bases with one out on a pair of hits and a walk. Higley drove in a run with a fielder's choice to pull Beloit to within a run. Ortega got out of the inning by getting Andy Paz to flyout to right. The loss was the eighth in a row for the Snappers. HOME RUN: BEL: Justin Higley (2nd, 0 on in 3rd inning off Angel Ventura) WP: Angel Ventura (3-2) LP: Heath Fillmyer (0-8) SAVE: Luis Ortega (2) TIME: 2:12 Wisconsin Game 1 Boxscore My only nitpick of Angel Ventura would be that's it's silly to give up HRs to batters hitting .167 on the season... other that than, he continues to be filthy when he's around the plate. He also had another pick off in this game. Elvis Rubio (2-4,2B) and Natanael Mejia (2-3) had the multi-hit games for T-Rats. Wisconsin Game 1 Recap

Atlanta Gets Bronson Arroyo and Touki Toussaint
TheCrew07 replied to splitterpfj's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
I struggle with your scenarios because you rarely match up apples with apples. Tossaint was a HS draftee, already throws harder, and from what I've seen had one of the better if not best CB in the Midwest League. Jed Bradley had 1 successful half season at A+ as 24 year old, that's it for his career. Toussaint is just 19 holding his own in A ball. A similar Brewer scenario to what AZ has said would have been that they traded Odorizzi because they drafted Jungmann and Bradley. The Brewers piss away $10 million every year on aging and declining players, I would absolutely eat another bad contract to pick up a pitcher with impact upside, we don't have any in our current rotation, and have just 2 potential impact pitchers at any level of full season ball at this time. It's like I said when the Brewers acquired Wolf and the Reds went after Chapman, where is the $30 million better spent? I don't see how someone being completely objective can honestly believe that AZ having to pay Atlanta with Toussaint to take a bad contract will somehow end well for AZ. I have my doubts that Toussaint would have thrown enough strikes if the Brewers drafted him, but ending up in Atlanta is about as good as ending up in San Fran from a pitching development standpoint, time will tell. Moving to the SAL will be interesting (ATL's A ball affiliate is in Rome, GA), Toussaint will basically get to pitch against all of the best A ball prospects in one season by switching leagues. He's had 2 MiLB articles written on him recently: Toussaint finds focus, blanks Chiefs D-backs No. 4 prospect tosses six one-hit innings, strikes out five MWL notes: Toussaint continues to grow D-backs righty building on momentum from extended spring training -

AZ has traded away more young potential impact pitching than any other organization and it shows, they float around .500 chasing an extra couple of wins each year and on occasion will rise up and have a good season. Meanwhile the pitching they've traded away flourishes elsewhere. It's too bad the Brewers haven't managed to get one of those impact arms in a trade. The best we did was JDLR and he was already in AAA with a BB rate near 4. That Sexson trade was more about immediate wins and revamping a horrid roster but the Vargas/Estrada deal was just awful. JDLR had an interesting path... from ARI, to the Mexican League, to BOS, to ARI, to MIL in 5 years. -
Link Report for Saturday 6/20 - Play Ball, Maryvale!

Rattlers rained out in Beloit on Saturday night By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers BELOIT, WI - Saturday's Midwest League game between the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers and the Beloit Snappers at Pohlman Field was rained out. The teams will play a doubleheader on Father's Day to conclude the first half. Game one of Sunday's twinbill is scheduled to start at noon. There will be approximately thirty minutes between the end of game one and the start of the second seven-inning game. The Timber Rattlers will start with Angel Ventura (2-2, 2.22) in game one and Devin Williams (2-4, 3.90) in the nightcap. Beloit has scheduled Heath Fillmyer (0-7, 8.50) and Junior Mendez (1-5, 5.12) as their starters for the doubleheader. Catch the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 11:40am. The broadcast may also be heard on Tune In Radio and IHeartRadio. -
Because you never say no athleticism... I'll use the Pirates as example. They have 3 outstanding athletes in the OF, all 3 were above average in CF in the minors, now they have outstanding defense which of course helps their pitchers tremendously. Having multiple prospects at a single position is not a bad thing, you can keep the one you like the best and trade off the rest for a position of greater need, or if they have good enough tools you can go the Pirates route and move CFs to the corners. I'd prefer to get impact pitching back, because I'm still personally chasing pitching, but on a macro level I'd say just get back the best talent you can. I don't care if that talent is in AAA, A, or even Rookie ball, just get legit talent.

I would be 100% thrilled to get Newcomb in any deal, 2 team, 3 team, whatever... I wanted him so badly on draft day last year... that's all I'm going to say. -
I doubt that as there's too much left to right and right to left movement in his delivery to ever have pinpoint control. His stuff isn't that great either, probably MLB average from what I've seen watching parts of all 3 games now. He could maybe be a #3 if his stuff improves but I think he'll end up like a Dave Bush type... very steady, 4ish ERA, around 6 innings per start. He's funky enough that it will take teams a while to get a book on him and then when they do I think you'll see him level off the same way Fiers did. He went from an exaggerated short stride in college to striding way across to his arm side and then rounding back towards 1st now. It's the most extreme example of pitching against the grain that I've seen in a long time, it's just weird to look at. I think if he simplified that delivery and allowed his body a much more natural and straightforward path to the plate his control would be much better and he'd legitimately be a 3 right now. I think that funk which originally helps pitchers eventually becomes their downfall when teams start adjusting, a name that everyone would know would be Dontrelle Willis. After that first year Willis had a harder time striking guys out and teams got better and better at avoiding his stuff out of the zone so by his 3rd full season his BB started ascending and by age 25 he was done as an effective starter. His decline was shockingly abrupt, it took just 2 years go from being an All-Star to a 5th starter, and he never threw more than 76 innings in a single season again. Those funky deliveries can create deception, but deception only gets you so far, and isn't a permanent plus. At some point pitchers need to be able to effectively mix their pitches for strikes, because batters will eventually adjust to a deceptive delivery.

Rattlers beat Beloit 5-1 at Miller Park By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers http://www.milb.com/assets/images/9/2/8/131787928/cuts/2015_Miller_Park_Game_Final_out_WEB_1h4jn3xo_nymssqf0.jpg David Burkhalter gets a strikeout to end the game at Miller Park on Friday night. The Rattlers beat Beloit 5-1. MILWAUKEE, WI - Kodi Medeiros took a no-hitter into the sixth inning and the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers offense provided plenty of support as the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers beat the Beloit Snappers 5-1 Friday night at Miller Park. Brandon Diaz put the Rattlers (22-46) in front with a leadoff homer in the third inning. The home run, the fifth of the season for Diaz, was the first hit of the game for Wisconsin. Wisconsin's offense added to their lead with three runs after there were two outs in the sixth. Elvis Rubio was on third and Sthervin Matos on first. Matos took off for second and drew a throw, but stopped before he got close to the base. Rubio broke for the plate and stole home as the throw went to the backstop. Matos wound up at third on the play. Greg McCall continued the inning by drawing a walk. Then, Alan Sharkey doubled down the line in left to drive in both Matos and McCall for a 4-0 lead. Medeiros got a strikeout to start the bottom of the sixth, but a walk and an error put the next two batters on base. Medeiros picked up the second out of the inning on a flyout to left. Joe Bennie spoiled the no-hit bid with a two-out double to left-center that drove in a run for Beloit (25-43). Josh Uhen came out of the Wisconsin bullpen and got the final out of the sixth. Medeiros struck out seven, walked three, and allowed the one unearned run over 5-2/3 innings to earn his third win of the season. Wisconsin added to their lead in the ninth. Diaz reached on a bunt single with one out. Pinch-hitter Jose Pena doubled and Diaz raced home to make it 5-1. David Burkhalter closed out the game with two scoreless innings. He pitched a 1-2-3 eighth inning and worked around a two-out single in the ninth with his fourth strikeout to earn his third save of the season. The series between the Rattlers and Snappers continues on Saturday night at Pohlman Field in Beloit. Angel Ventura (2-2, 2.22) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Heath Fillmyer (0-7, 8.50) is set to start for the Snappers. Game time is 7:00pm. Catch the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:40pm. The broadcast may also be heard on Tune In Radio and IHeartRadio. HOME RUN: WIS: Brandon Diaz (5th, 0 on in 3rd inning off Joey Bagman, 0 out) WP: Kodi Medeiros (3-2) LP: Joey Wagman (2-2) SAVE: David Burkhalter (3) TIME: 2:40 ATTN: 4,507 Wisconsin Boxscore I was wondering if this game would be an exercise in offensive futility as these are the 2 worst teams in the league in nearly every statistical category. However the Rattler bats came through and put up another 5 spot, now 4 out of the last 5 games with 5+ runs. Dustin DeMuth (2-3,BB) and Brandon Diaz (2-4,HR) led the way offensively. This was the first time Beloit had faced Kodi Medeiros, and true to the past scenario this game went very much in his favor allowing just the 1 hit and 3 walks while striking out 7. He had a couple of 4 pitch walks, I don't remember the 3rd, I had buffering issues all night so I would lose the game about twice an inning. However he erased one with a pick-off and the other with a double play. Per Chris Kodi was working 91-93 and continues to be an enigma as he was missing regularly to both sides of the plate and wasn't piling on strikes, there were lots of deep counts. Chris mentioned in the 5th or 6th that Medeiros was about 50/50 with balls and strikes, but I didn't catch a final count from him, and of course the pitch counts aren't in the box. It's pretty interesting that even when Kodi isn't at his best he can put numbers like this, and it was a heck of bounce back effort statistically. After a couple of rough appearances David Burkhalter also bounced back nicely. All 4 of Burkhalter's strike outs were swinging, 6 of 7 Medeiros strike outs were of the swinging variety as well. Minor League Wages -- A Major Issue in the MLB Boom Era
TheCrew07 replied to Jim Goulart's topic in Brewers Minor League Talk
Baseball has so many issues that would be easily fixed, but by far this is the most troubling problem. Seriously, give players enough to pay for rent, utilities, and groceries during the season. Then give it a minor $500/month bump per level till they are on the 40 man roster. With a sport awash in money this is ridiculous. -
One note on the Pirates... it's not so much their pitching staff now, it's what they pitching staff will be when they have Cole, Taillon, Glasnow, and Kingham in the rotation... all homegrown for what it's worth. We're probably a year or 2 away on that depending on how Kingham's TJ recovery goes. Taillon just went 5 innings in extended spring training and will be ready to pick-up back in full season ball here shortly. If the Brewers aren't going to win the Central, and it looks like we're cycling down towards our valley then I'd like the Pirates to win it. I'm actually fond of the Pirates organization and have been for about 4-5 years now, it happened by accident and now I find myself wanting them to do well.

Cougars complete sweep of Rattlers Kane County beats Rattlers 2-1 in 11 innings By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers http://www.milb.com/assets/images/0/0/8/120693008/cuts/4_Apr26_Hirsch_gil85g58_91oo6n9n.jpg Zach Hirsch allowed one run on four hits over eight innings on Thursday at Kane County. (Wisconsin Timber Rattlers/Ann Mollica) GENEVA, IL - Zach Hirsch and Wei-Chieh Huang hooked up in a pitching duel on Thursday night a Fifth Third Bank Ballpark. But, both starters were gone when a pinch-hit, walkoff single by Michael Perez gave the Kane County Cougars a 2-1 victory in eleven innings to sweep the three game series. Huang, the Kane County starter, gave up a two-out single to Elvis Rubio in the top of the first inning. Huang retired the next twenty Timber Rattlers he faced in the game. Kane County (34-32) broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the sixth. Victor Reyes doubled on an 0-2 pitch to start the frame and break a streak of ten straight batters retired by Hirsch. Ildemaro Vargas bunted Reyes over to third and the Rattlers infield came in on the grass with Ryan Gebhardt at the plate. Gebhardt hit a hard grounder that shortstop Francisco Castillo had to dive to stop. There was no chance for Castillo to get Reyes at the plate and the throw had to go to first as the Cougars took a 1-0 lead. Hirsch tossed a professional single-game high of eight innings, walked none, and struck out four to keep the Rattlers (21-46) in the game. Wisconsin broke through against Huang in the eighth inning with a little help. Jose Pena singled with one out and Huang balked to move Pena to second. Alan Sharkey struck out, but the ball got away to allow Pena to take third and Sharkey to reach. Greg McCall hit a sacrifice fly deep to left to score Pena with the tying run. Huang allowed two hits, one run, walked none, and struck out eight over eight innings and got a no decision. The Timber Rattlers could not take advantage of leadoff walks in the tenth and eleventh innings and it would cost them. Gian Rizzo entered the game in the bottom of the eleventh after two scoreless innings from Scott Lieser and gave up a leadoff single to Ryan Hutchison. A bunt by Reyes moved Hutchison to second and the Rattlers elected to walk Vargas intentionally to set up the double play. Rizzo got Gebhardt to fly out to right for the second out. But, Perez came off the bench to end the game with a line drive to the gap in left-center. The ball dropped for a hit and Hutchison scored the winning run. The Timber Rattlers are 3-6 on the first nine games of their current 12-game road trip to end the first half of the Midwest League schedule. The Timber Rattlers will be at Miller Park on Friday night to take on the Beloit Snappers. Kodi Medeiros (2-2, 4.97) is the scheduled starting pitcher for Wisconsin. Beloit has named Joey Wagman (2-1, 3.12) as their starter. Game time is 7:10pm. Tickets for the game start at just $5 and may be purchased at this link, at the Miller Park Box Office or by calling the Brewers Ticket Office at (414) 902-4000 or 1-800-933-7890. The Miller Park parking lots open at 5:10pm and the gates to the stadium open at 6:10pm. If you can't make it out to Miller Park, you can catch the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:50pm. The broadcast may also be heard on Tune In Radio and IHeartRadio. WP: Nick Baker (4-1) LP: Gian Rizzo (0-1) TIME: 2:27 ATTN: 5,686 Wisconsin Boxscore Noooooo! In all honestly, the T-Rats were gifted their way back into the game but then Kane County just took it back in the end. Zach Hirsch... again not sexy but the young man can pitch, 4 hits and no walks in 8 innings is awesome. Zach missed some time so it's not like he's up there with the league leaders in IP but he's only walked 5 batters in 42.1 so far this season. We've had T-Rat pitchers walk that many in a single game... Rattler hitters managed just 3 hits in 11 innings, Elvis Rubio (2-4) was 2/3 of the offense in this one, which probably means being on the wrong side of another MiLB.com story as Wei-Chieh Huang has been fantastic since starting his season the end of last month. Gomez and K-Rod to Toronto idea
TheCrew07 replied to Matt Breen's topic in Transaction Rumors & Proposals
K-Rod may be an all-star this year, but that doesn't mean he has significant trade value. He netted Delmonico last he was traded and at that time he didn't cost as much as he does now, was a FA to be, and was younger. K-Rod might get us a thrown in, the real value would come from Gomez. As to the prospects... well the Jays have proven to be stupid about trading young pitching. Daniel Norris is an excellent target, and no he's not injured. BA had him as the 18th best prospect in baseball coming into this season: If they wouldn't give up Norris I'd take a shot a Hoffman now that he's back from TJ surgery: Pentecost is a good target, though he's on the DL, I didn't check what for. He wouldn't hit as well as Lucroy but could be a .280 AVE guy with 15ish HRs at his peak. If not Pentecost then target OF Dalton Pompey: Miguel Castro (Hammer) is another good target: I also like Hammer's idea of throwing in a lower lever guy or 2 who's not in there top 10 like Angel Perdomo. I'd take 1 each of the position players and pitchers mentioned above, and I like the idea of some low level pitching thrown in, some guys with zip to their FBs. 2 top 10 prospects and a couple of guys to dream on seems like a pretty fair deal to me. Edit. No idea why I didn't add in Pentecost's scouting report, doing that now. -
Not to side track the thread but Jorge Lopez' family could use that plan in the worst way right now, at least he's on tap for a 40 man addition though.
-
I get what you're saying about trying to bring back some resources, but the Brewers can bring up any pitcher they want at this point without it costing service time so why not one of our guys? We'll still have them for 6 more full seasons and if he's a replaceable part like a Cravy or Jungmann and someone is willing to flip us a B or B+ prospect I'd be alright with that. Isn't the that more straightforward and logical solution? To pickup a guy to hope he builds enough value to then spin him off for a C or C- prospect is a chain of events where pretty much everything has to go perfectly from the Brewer perspective for it to work out. Edit. I realize I've been posting about avoiding linear moves lately, but given the time frame I just don't think Chacin is a good target, but I'm down with the out-of-the-box mentality.
-
Well to be fair those of us who were initially confused didn't understand how much he was making, I was aware of the rule for MLB players but I didn't realize it applied to players sent back down to the minors as well. That was news to me and I've been following this stuff for quite a while, I had gotten to the point where I thought I pretty much had my mind wrapped around all the nuances in the rosters and contracts. Baseball is one extremely complicated animal.... That $300,000 revelation changed everything from where I'm sitting.

Some indirect praise of Gilbert Lara as well. Top Dominican Outfielders For July 2 June 18, 2015 by Ben Badler -
I don't really think most people have a problem with acquiring Dominguez, it's keeping around all the other useless dead weight and exposing Wang to waivers which many don't like. If it was just about talent, the move makes no sense, why risk losing a lefty who works in the low 90s? I could list a plethora of top prospects who have struggled for longer and turned out okay, Wang's start to the season was concerning, but not deal breaking. Hopefully he clears waivers and then it's all good and with that salary there's a good chance he won't be taken. A part of me is skeptical that isn't about talent or performance and is in fact just about trying to unload Wang's salary to save some money, the Brewers are sincerely hoping someone bites. The revelation about the $300K shed much more light on the subject.

Your 2015 Helena / Maryvale Brewers
TheCrew07 replied to Jim Goulart's topic in Brewers Minor League Talk
I just realized Denson isn't on Helena's preliminary roster, if he's not on that squad something else is going on because he wasn't bad enough to be demoted all the way back AZ because of game action. It's a good sign that Diplan was assigned to Helena, I'm very intrigued by him. -
Cougars wreck Rattlers rally with late comeback Kane County tops Rattlers 8-7 By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers http://www.milb.com/assets/images/1/4/4/129205144/cuts/6_June_6_Rubio_g3w9ow6k_ml1fqfmi.jpg Elvis Rubio had two doubles, scored a run, and drove in a pair of runs for the Rattlers on Wednesday at Kane County. (Wisconsin Timber Rattlers/Ann Mollica) GENEVA, IL - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers scored four times in the top of the eighth inning to take a 6-5 lead on the Kane County Cougars Wednesday afternoon at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark. But, Kane County rallied with three runs in the bottom of the eighth and held off Wisconsin in the ninth for an 8-7 victory. Wisconsin (21-45) got on the board first. Francisco Castillo singled to start the inning, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Brandon Diaz, and took third on a grounder by Elvis Rubio. Kane County starter Markus Solbach hit Dustin DeMuth to extend the inning. Sthervin Matos blooped in a single to drive in Castillo from third for a 1-0 lead. Kane County (33-32) countered in the second inning against Wisconsin starting pitcher Cy Sneed. Colin Bray tripled to start the frame. Chuck Taylor drove in Bray with a sacrifice fly to tie the game, The Rattlers answered back in the top of the third. Elvis Rubio doubled with one out. DeMuth put the Rattlers up 2-1 with a single to right-center that drove in Rubio. Marty Herum started the Kane County fourth with a single. Bray followed with a bunt single up the third base line and the throw to first was wild. Herum scored all the way from first and Bray wound up on third base. Taylor knocked in Bray with a grounder and the Cougars were up 3-2. In the fifth, Victor Reyes started the inning with a slow grounder to the right side of the infield. After brief confusion as to who would field the ball, second baseman Tucker Neuhaus took the ball and flipped the ball from his glove to Sneed covering first base. The play appeared to be in time, but Reyes was ruled safe. Cody Regis followed with a triple to right-center to drive in Reyes for a 4-2 lead.. Joe Munoz started the Kane County seventh inning with a double off Sneed and the Rattlers brought Tyler Linehan out of the bullpen. Reyes singled to center off Linehan and Munoz scored for a 5-2 advantage. Tucker Neuhaus, who had singled earlier in the game to extend his hitting streak to ten games, singled to start the Wisconsin eighth against reliever Steve Hathaway. Jose Pena followed with a double. Then, Alan Sharkey singled to center to score Neuhaus. Hathaway got the next two outs before giving way to Luis Ramirez. Diaz dropped a hit in behind the mound to allow Pena to score and the Rattlers were within a run. Rubio completed the comeback when he sent an 0-2 pitch from Ramirez just fair inside the line at third base for a two-run double and the Rattlers were up 6-5. But, the Cougars had a rally of their own. Linehan got the first out of the frame, but gave up singles to Taylor and Michael Perez. Munoz followed with a single to left to score Taylor with the tying run. Perez and Munoz each moved into scoring position on the throw to the plate. Wisconsin elected to walk Reyes intentionally to load the bases, but set up the double play. However, Linehan hit Regis to force in the go-ahead run for Kane County. Zach Cooper was summoned from the bullpen and had a 3-1 count on Ildemaro Vargas when he balked to allow Kane County's eighth run of the game to score. Cooper escaped the inning with no more damage. Neuhaus started the Wisconsin ninth against Cougars close Zac Curtis with a single, his third hit of the game. Pena bunted Neuhaus to second and Sharkey drove in Neuhaus with a hit. Sharkey's third hit of the game made it 8-7. Greg McCall was next and his deep fly to left died on the warning track for the second out. Castillo kept the game alive for the Rattlers with a single, but Curtis collected his thirteenth save of the season with a strikeout of Diaz to end the game. Curtis is 5-for-5 in save opportunities against the Timber Rattlers this season. The Rattlers collected a season-high 17 hits in the game and went 6-for-17 with runners in scoring position, but could not stop themselves from falling to a season low 24 games under .500. DeMuth joined Neuhaus and Sharkey with three-hit games. DeMuth also reached base on a hit batsman and a walk on Wednesday. The Timber Rattlers conclude their three-game series with the Cougars on Thursday night at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark. Zach Hirsch (2-3, 2.98) is the scheduled starting pitcher for Wisconsin. Kane County sends Wei-Chieh Huang to the mound. Game time is 6:30pm. Catch the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 5:40pm. The broadcast may also be heard on Tune In Radio and IHeartRadio. Subscribers to MiLB.TV can follow the action that way. WP: Luis Ramirez (1-0) LP: Tyler Linehan (1-1) SAVE: Zac Curtis (13) TIME: 3:00 ATTN: 7,787 Wisconsin Boxscore Man, another game this young T-Rats squad basically gave away... a 2 run error, a mix up on a ground ball to the right side, and a HBP and Balk to allow runs in the 8th. Cy Sneed wasn't as sharp as he's been, but he was good enough here with better defense. I will say this though, the Rattlers are gradually becoming a much more resilient team. They took it on the nose yesterday only scoring 2 runs, but over the last couple of weeks they've started to battle back from multiple run deficits and compete for 9 innings. I know that's not reflected in the record, a loss is still a loss, but progress is being made. There are still games with stretches of prolonged offensive futility, as in 9+ guys making in outs in a row, but make no mistake that slow and steady progress is being made. In fact Wisconsin has scored more than 5 runs in 3 of the last 4 games, the pitching and defense has suddenly fallen apart which has been disappointing, there haven't been many games where all 3 phases were in sync. The 3 hit days were highlighted above, Elvis Rubio's day was captioned underneath the photo, and Francisco Castillo (2-6) had the final multi-hit day. Wisconsin Recap
