  1. The only way this could be worse is if McGehee goes yard, I can take losing but I've grown to despise McGehee.
  2. Penny's 2nd hit of the year... this is getting comical in a hurry.
  3. The good news is that Gallardo only has 36 more pitches until RR pulls him.
  4. Around the all-star break I posted I didn't think there was anyway the Pirates would challenge the Brewers this season given all they've gone through. it never occurred to me that instead of hanging in the division race all season the Brewers would play their way all the back to competition for the last WC spot. Miami is only 4.5 back in the WC race which I find surprising. Pittsburgh is winning 2-1 in the 6th, Atlanta losing 0-1 in the 7th. Nice friggen pitch Yo, cripes... then he hangs a CB to McGehee that Gomez thankfully runs down.

  7. I've been meaning to get to this thread for a couple of days now. I think Seid's legacy depends on how one chooses to frame the argument. He did well finding MLB talent throughout the draft, but little legitimate impact talent. I'm certainly not an excuse maker so when it comes to the Arnett pick for example I'm not willing to excuse that away as "industry consensus". Industry consensus definitely has it's place but I'd rather the talent evaluators in the organization I root for were better than everyone else and seeing what others don't see. The Brewers have done better finding MLB pitchers, and something is absolutely better than nothing, but we're still woefully thin on impact pitching. Impact relievers are generally starters with plus stuff who couldn't stick in the rotation, and simply put we just don't have many stuff guys in the organization. If you fast forward to the 2011 draft there was plenty of talk on this forum how the top 3 pitchers may have been drafted in reverse order of their ceiling, as in Lopez>Bradley>Jungmann from an ultimate ceiling standpoint. I didn't know much about Bradley prior to the draft, there wasn't as much video out there as there is now, so it was difficult to comment on him, but I had plenty to say about what I saw from Jungmann and he's just not my kind of guy in the 1st round. I thought Seid's last 3 drafts have been much better, much closer to what I'm personally looking for; sprinkling as much upside as possible throughout the draft which ultimately gave the drafts decent balance between tools & production. I really don't care about college vs high school, I care about relative talent and upside. So while Covey ultimately became Jungmann, neither one was really the top of the rotation starter the organization has so desperately needed to produce internally. In that respect I don't see what diabetes in Covey's case or Jungmann's longer road to the majors really has to do really has to do with anything. If you're chasing upside pitching like I've been, it's just not there, and we've been woefully thin on lefties, so you were in wait and see mode with Seid; are any of these guys going to become impact players or pitchers? If you just want players to fill holes at the big league then you're probably very happy with Seid's drafts. As I've said many times I haven't been looking to replace with the 4 WAR or better players we had with 2 or 3 WAR players, we're losing ground that way... I wanted to replace impact players with younger versions of those same guys. I agree that DM and MA have unwittingly shot the organization in the foot by continually trying to patch the MLB roster via trades and the FA pitching signings. For successful organizations in professional sports the building process never really stops, they are always looking to cycle impact talent through making strategic decisions about whom to keep and whom to let walk, regardless of sport. I have a hard time believing the Brewer organization has been better off even in the short-term with their limited view on the "now" since 2006, but it is what it is at this point. It's often said that every organization likes their players the most and I think that was especially true in Seid's case. He had incredible passion for his guys and I think in some ways that led to the organization stalling out on the talent front. What I mean is that Seid could say that Jungmann had the potential to be a #2, he even probably believed it, but that didn't/doesn't make it so. I found Bruce to be extremely engaging and thoughtful in both the video and audio interviews he did over the years, as I said numerous times in the past I liked him on a personal level and I enjoyed how his draft process evolved through 2014. If some of the talented players from the last 3 drafts can become difference makers I think history will shine very favorably on him. If not, then his tenure would have largely been an exercise in futility. He did what he could, it's up to the players now.

  9. Rattlers knocked out of playoffs in a heartbreaking loss Kane County tops Wisconsin 4-3 in thirteen innings By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers GENEVA, IL - The Kane County Cougars defeated the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 4-3 in thirteen innings on Thursday night at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark. The win gave the Cougars a sweep in the best-of-three first round Midwest League playoff series. The Cougars took the lead in the bottom of the first inning. Chesny Young doubled to right with one out in the frame. Jeimer Candelario followed with a double to right-center on the next pitch and Kane County was up 1-0. That was the only run allowed y Wisconsin starting pitcher Preston Gainey. Clint Coulter tied the game for Wisconsin with a leadoff home run in the top of the fourth inning. Coulter, who hit 22 homers during the regular season, blasted a 1-1 pitch from Duane Underwood over the wall in left-center. Wisconsin had the bases loaded with two outs later in the fourth inning. Jose Pena lined a 1-2 pitch from Kane County starter Duane Underwood to right field to drive in both Rafael Neda and Chris McFarland to give the Rattlers a 3-1 lead. Gainey protected the 3-1 lead, but left after walking Trey Martin with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning. Gainey left after allowing one run on four hits with five strikeouts over 6-1/3 innings. Trevor Seidenberger took over and struck out the next two batters to send the game to the eighth. Seidenberger hit Jeimer Candelario to start the bottom of the eighth inning. That brought Mike Olt to the plate. Olt, who hit twelve home runs in 72 games with the Chicago Cubs this season, cracked a 1-2 pitch over the scoreboard in left-center to tie the game 3-3. Olt, who hit a three-run homer in Game One of the series, a 7-3 Kane County win. The Cougars nearly won the game in the bottom of the ninth inning. They had the bases loaded with one out and Olt was due to bat, but the Cougars sent Danny Lockhart up to pinch-hit. Trey Martin broke from third on the first pitch to Lockhart on a suicide squeeze attempt. But, Lockhart missed and Martin was run down between third and home for the second out. Later in the at bat, Lockhart sent a liner towards left, but shortstop Angel Ortega made a spectacular diving catch to end the inning. Martin nearly won the game in the eleventh inning. He lined a pitch deep left with one out against reliever Luke Curtis and went into his home run trot. But, the ball hit off the top of the wall and dropped at the feet of Pena on the warning track. Martin tried to turn on the speed to get to second for a double, but was out on a strong relay throw from Ortega. Wisconsin's best chance to score in extra innings came in the top of the twelfth inning. Taylor Brennan walked with two outs and the Cougars went to the bullpen. Francisco Carrillo entered the ballgame and proceeded to walk the next two batters to load the bases. But, the Rattlers could not capitalize as Carrillo got the next batter to ground out. The end came in the thirteenth inning. Martin reached on an infield single against Brandon Moore to start the frame. Shawon Dunston, Jr. dropped a sacrifice bunt and a throwing error put runners at second and third. Moore walked Young intentionally to load the bases and Wisconsin brought Michael Ratterree in from right field to play as a fifth infielder with Candelario at the plate. Moore got ahead of Candelario 1-2, but the Cougars third baseman lined a clean single to center to drive in Martin with the winning run and end Wisconsin's season. HOME RUNS: WIS: Clint Coulter (1st, 0 on in 4th inning off Duane Underwood, 0 out) KC: Mike Olt (2nd, 1 on in 8th inning off Trevor Seidenberger, 0 out) WP: Francisco Carrillo (1-0) LP: Brandon Moore (0-1) TIME: 4:36 ATTN: 2,796 Wisconsin Boxscore Between the Badgers on Saturday, the Brewers all week, Bruce Seid's untimely death, Packers tonight, and the T-Rats getting knocked out tonight as well I really can't imagine a worse sports week. The Rattlers gave everything they had but the difference in this series was a rehabbing Mike Olt and it pisses me off. I really enjoyed this Rattler team, there's a ton of untapped potential on this particular club. As always the Wisconsin staff was fantastic, thank you to you all, especially Chris and Ann who's work I leaned on all season. Wisconsin Recap Wisconsin Gameday
  10. I was saving this for my T-Rat summary post but on one of the episodes of Timber Rattlers Field Pass recently (I forget which exact episode without looking it up) I believe Johnny Davis said he was clocked multiple times at 6.0 in the 60... If that's true, and I have no reason to doubt him other than TWC was having a problem and the feed my DVR recorded was glitchy and hard to hear so I may have gotten it wrong. Equating that 60y time to a 40y dash which people are more familiar with is difficult because athletes spend more time at top speed in the 60y and have more time to accelerate but that 60 time is roughly equivalent to 4.20 speed in the 40, as in there are just a couple of guys in the game that fast. Harrison's speed roughly equates more to 4.4-4.5 type 40, as Colby said he'll be above average to plus depending on how he matures, but he's not Hamilton. Speed wise base stealing is mostly about initial acceleration and chances are he's extremely explosive out of the gate, which is exciting in it's own right as it means he's quick out of the box, will get great jumps on balls in the gap, have great success stealing bases, and so on. PG had Omar Garcia at 6.43 in the 60, and while he stole 44 bases this season he was caught 21 times as well, he was only successful 68% of the time in A ball. Davis stole 32 bases but was caught 21 times as well, just 63%. I'd much rather have explosive athletes than straight line speed, but I have a football/basketball/baseball background and was never a track guy. I want players who can change direction in a hurry and accelerate through corners when running the bases. That's why I personally talk about getting the organization to become more dynamic athletically and rarely talk about speed. That there is so much more to base stealing than just being explosive or fast, for example being able to read the pitcher and situation is at least important as anything else. My point here is that much like the Eric Farris conversations of year's past being a good base stealer doesn't necessarily make one extremely fast and being fast doesn't necessarily make one a good base stealer. I hope that made sense. Finally I would hope that Gomez is keeping CF warm for Tyrone Taylor, another explosive athlete, as Harrison will be in R+ next year while Taylor will be in AA. It would be awesome if Harrison progressed enough to start in A ball for his first full season like a similarly raw Denson did this year, but that's quite a projection to throw on him right now. Helena seems like a safer bet, especially with Diaz in front of him and deserving of a promotion to WI. CF is quickly becoming a position of strength with intriguing athletes up and down the chain... D'Vo, Taylor, Davis, Garcia, Diaz, and Harrison. Harrison could play on the same team as Diaz splitting time in CF but I don't see a good reason to push him right now, though he could certainly force the issue next year if his play in the spring is good enough.
  11. I'm surprised by that to be honest, I'm glad I never attacked him personally, though he probably took my comments about the farm system personally knowing now how close he was to his draftees. Oddly it makes me feel worse, even though I've always just given my honest opinion about the players, system, and organization. I've never disliked the people, just the tact the organization has taken over the years, and I hope that came across to him in my posts. Somehow that knowledge made this much more personal.

  15. Cougars grab game one 7-3 Timber Rattlers held to five hits By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers http://www.milb.com/assets/images/3/5/0/93019350/cuts/Sept3Game1_fq1ycg0v_rdlyqdl4.jpg The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers and Kane County Cougars pause for a moment of silence for Bruce Seid before Wednesday's playoff opener. (Ann Mollica/Wisconsin Timber Rattlers) GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Kane County Cougars defeated the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 7-3 on Wednesday night at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium. The game was Game One of the first round, best-of-three series in the Midwest League Playoffs. Jen-Ho Tseng, who was 6-1 during the regular season, picked up the win for Kane County. Kane County took the lead in the top of the second inning. Jacob Rogers and Cael Brockmeyer singled to start the inning and each moved on a base on a wild pitch. Carlos Penalver drove in Rogers with a sacrifice fly for a 1-0 lead. The Cougars got consecutive singles from Shawon Dunston, Jr. and Mark Zagunis to start the third inning. Yasiel Balaguert singled with one out to drive in Dunston for a 2-0 lead. Johnny Davis cut Kane County's lead to a run. The Wisconsin centerfielder reached on a bunt single to start the bottom of the third. He stole second and went to third on a grounder. A pitch from Tseng trickled past the Kane County catcher and Davis raced home with the run. The Rattlers kept the game at 2-1 until the top of the fifth inning. Wisconsin starting pitcher Clint Terry issued a walk and gave up an single with one out to bring Olt to the plate. Olt, on a major league rehabilitation assignment for the Chicago Cubs, hit a 3-2 pitch to the Cougars bullpen in left-center for a 5-1 lead. David Denson hit an opposite field solo home run to left in the bottom of the sixth for the Rattlers final run off Tseng. The Taiwanese right-hander allowed two runs on two hits over six innings to earn the win. Kane County tacked on two more runs in the top of the eighth inning. Trey Martin singled with runners at second and third and one out to drive in both runners for a 7-2 advantage. Wisconsin managed a rally in the ninth. Clint Coulter drew a walk against reliever Tyler Ihrig to start the inning. Rafael Neda singled with one out. Michael Ratterree followed with a single to left to score Coulter for a 7-3 lead. But, Ihrig closed out the game by getting the next two batters looking at strike three. Game two of the best-of-three series is Thursday night at Kane County. Preston Gainey (5-9, 4.18) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. The Cougars have named Duane Underwood (6-4, 2.50) as their starter. Game time on Thursday is 6:00pm. If the Rattlers win, they force game three at Kane County on Friday night. If the Cougars win, Wisconsin's season comes to an end. Tune in for the broadcast on AM1280, WNAM or IHeartRadio starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 5:40pm. HOME RUNS: KC: Mike Olt (1st, 2 on in 5th inning off Clint Terry, 1 out) WIS: David Denson (1st, 0 on in 6th inning off Jen-Ho Tseng, 1 out) WP: Jen-Ho Tseng (1-0) LP: Clint Terry (0-1) SAVE: Tyler Ihrig (1) TIME: 2:50 ATTN: 1,070 Wisconsin Boxscore This Kane County pitching staff has been far and away the best pitching staff in the league all season. The team ERA ended at 2.85 and the WHIP 1.17, all done without the aid of a high strike out total. In fact there wasn't a single Cub pitcher in the top 20 in Strike Outs. Clint Terry isn't a stuff guy and Mike Olt isn't really good match-up for him, Chris said later in the broadcast that the commissioner had to approve MLB postseason rehab assignments to MiLB teams but that doesn't make me feel any better about it. The Rattlers managed just 5 hits but Johnny Davis (2-3) did put up the Rattler's only multi-hit game. Wisconsin Recap Wisconsin Gameday
  16. Parra upgraded the bench, which matters in small samples in the post season, but how many regular season wins does a move like that really add? It's like adding Lopez for the stretch run which proved inconsequential in the long run. If Gomez isn't able to come back this season is the drop off from Gomez to Parra really going to matter more than the drop off from Gomez to Schafer would have? Again I think the impact of these in season moves is grossly overstated. I'm not a huge DM guy but I'd rather he sat on his hands than make a bad trade for Morneau. 1B is incredibly thin all around baseball at the moment, that's just the way it is. It is far better to build depth up front than to try and constantly trade for it by acquiring temporary solutions. At some point we have to start plugging holes and quit patching them, that's the only way to truly get over the hump. Just because the team ran off to an unsustainable 20-7 start doesn't mean 2014 is a missed opportunity at a season of destiny. How many in season moves can a GM really make that are going to make a significant impact? Players performing like Sabathia did in 2008 post trade... that just doesn't happen very often and Sabathia hasn't been that hot as a pitcher since. That situation was truly lightening in a bottle, the Mets even collapsed for us to complete the story book ending, and if that has become the bar for mid season acquisition for many posters than the bar has been set unattainably high.

  19. You know I was sad with Garza in the game but somehow I actually felt worse when Estrada came in. He's gone from people claiming he was a legitimate 2/3 to being a white flag in less than a season. ... and Ramirez caught that with his boob, sweet.
  20. Posted a 2 part summary of the Sounds season starting here.
  21. 2014 Nashville Sounds Season Review & Summary Part 2 Shawn Zarraga Age 25 Status: Huntsville Active Zarraga exploded back onto the scene in 2014 with a monster start to the season at AA but success with the bat didn't follow him to Nashville. He was drafted for raw power potential which has never really materialized. His defense has apparently been an issue for most of his career and unfortunately he's never been a good enough prospect to get written about by prospect evaluators, nor I wasn't there for any of the 21 games he caught when he was in Wisconsin so I don't have any first hand observations to offer. The surge in his numbers was attributed to rededicating himself to the sport over the most recent off-season but he did fade down the stretch. If he's back for 2014 he'd most likely be the "prospect" catcher in AAA. He's struggled offensively at the higher levels of minors but following the 2012 season BA rated him as the best defensive C in the Brewers' system, granted he didn't have much competition for that title given what I've seen come through WI but he has a solid defensive reputation none the less. Catchers don't have to hit much so if he's good enough defensively he could possibly carve out a niche as a MLB reserve someplace. Adam spent most of the season with the Stars but was promoted up to the Sounds starting on 8/8. He's had some okay years at the plate but overall is a below average hitter like most catchers. Ariel Pena Age 25 Status: Active Pena might be the most frustrating pitcher in the system as he has a legitimate FB and slider but isn't able to repeat his delivery enough to be able to consistently throw strikes. Even at his best he hasn't been efficient enough with his pitches to go more than 6 innings, his BB rate and SO/BB are not what I would expect from a legitimate starting pitcher. Long term I like him for a bullpen role though I was holding out some hope that he would find his groove as a starter. Ariel is also out of options for 2015 so he'll have to make the big club or clear waivers. Jimmy still has work to do with his location and 3rd pitch but he's a pretty safe bet to be a middle of the road MLB starter. With better control and a plus 3rd pitch he could be a #2 but I think that's a pretty steep hill for him to climb at this point. Regardless he should be in Milwaukee to stay. Taylor Jungmann Age 24 Status: Active Jungmann enjoyed his best season as a professional as his SO/9 jumped up over full 3 full points in a single season. I don't recall another pitcher in the Brewer system having that kind of jump in a single season. He was up and down in Nashville before closing the season on an extreme high note. He works primarily off a 90-92 sinker and has been working to improve his slider, change, and curve over his first 2 seasons. His command hasn't been great as a professional, occasionally causing him issues this season as well. He looks like a lock to return to AAA and be the first pitcher up to cover any issues in Milwaukee for 2015. Ultimately I'm hoping he's a #3 but he's a pretty safe bet to at least be a back of the rotation starter. He's bounced between AA and AAA for the Brewers now in both 2013-2014, I'd much rather someone like Suter get that role than continue with Leach as the swing lefty. Kyle posted a solid yet unspectacular 2013 and followed that up with a disaster in his repeat performance of AAA. He was still managing to hang on in the BA Brewer top 30 all the way to 2012 when he was the #29, but that's a more a commentary on the farm system than anything Heckathorn had done to warrant such consideration. As starter his velocity had dipped down into the high 80s at times, as a reliever he works 91-93 but doesn't have any one pitch which really stands out. As long as he's throwing strikes I don't think there's anyway he returns to the minor leagues again, which is wonderful for him considering the winding road he traveled back to the Brewer organization. Even the most casual Brewer fan is educated on Dillard and his AAA stint was positively awful. Tyler Cravy Age 25 Status: AZL Brewers Rehab Cravy is a low 90s sinker guy and mixes in a decent slider and curve. It took him a while to figure out how to locate but he exploded in BC last year and carried that through his campaign this year. Unfortunately he suffered a very bad oblique injury in his first start at Nashville and never made it back to AAA before the season ended. His season effectively ended on 6/22 but hopefully he's part of the AAA rotation in 2015. 22. 2014 Nashville Sounds Season Review & Summary Part 1 Record: 77-67 Finish: 2nd American South Division Playoffs: N/A The Sounds were an extremely veteran ball club with few first timers in AAA. The 16 team PCL is split into 4 divisions of 4 teams each, the division winners advance to the postseason. Nashville's winning percentage was better than that of Omaha who won the American North with a 76-67 record by virtue of the fact Nashville played and won 1 more game. Nashville hadn't posted a winning season since the 77-67 record in 2010 and the 2013 season was just an awful 57-87 campaign which may have already sealed Milwaukee's fate with the affiliate coming into the season. The Sounds were 13th of the 16 teams in terms of OPS, and much of the year were near the bottom of the league in HR totals, but a flourish of HRs through August bumped those numbers significantly. It's extremely difficult for teams outside of the West to be in the top of league without the games in the extreme run environments of places like Colorado City, Reno, and Tucson. Nashville had the lowest run total in the league, just 4.40 per game, finished 12 in AVE at .266, and were tied for last in OBP at .325. The low team OBP shouldn't be a surprise given the construction of the ball club which was very similar to Milwaukee in that there weren't very many patient hitters in the lineup. Nashville did lead the league in ERA, edging out the Cubs affiliate in Iowa by .001, though most of the players whom contributed in large part to that stat were gone by season's end. Nelson, Fiers, Jeffress, and Mills had all moved up or on by August. The Sounds also took the SO and WHIP categories but were in the middle of the pack when it came to BBs. All in all the club did accomplish most of what it was built to do which was provide MLB depth and win ball games. Many of us also thought the roster was direct move to provide a winner for Nashville in hopes of retaining the affiliation with the team. From a prospect perspective they weren't exciting to follow as a team, though the pitching was extraordinary for a time. I wasn't thrilled with the roster construction as it started a logjam all the way through the system and I'd hope the news that the Sounds are looking to partner with a different organization for 2015 coupled with the success at the lower levels of the system would mean we'd see less of a veteran presence and more prospects on the team next year. Position Players (In order of total MILB PA.) Sean Halton Age 27 Status: Active Halton's AVE went up 20 points this season at the expense of his OPS dropping almost 40 points as both his OBP and SLG went down, I would rather the AVE went down but the OBP and SLG went up. He's become more versatile defensively but as he's limited to the corners he just doesn't have the offensive game to support a starting role on a MLB club. With the logjam in front of him he actually started the season repeating AA but worked his way up to AAA on 6/27 but was still one of this team's more intriguing prospects. He's not all that toolsy but is a decent athlete for his size, he's going to put up solid AB after AB as he competes, he definitely grew on me during his time in WI. I still think he fits best at 1B but playing at least a respectable 3B just increases his future versatility if he isn't able to stick as an everyday type player. It was nice to see him double in his first MLB AB earlier tonight. Playing in the favorable hitting environment of Tucson during his first 2 years of AAA for the Padres he was let go and picked up by the Mets who assigned him to AA Binghamton in 2014. Clark asked for and was granted his release in the middle of the summer at which time the Brewers picked him up and he posted the best numbers of his career. The extended hot streak directly led to a September call-up and his MLB debut last night in which he flied out to CF. He's definitely on the Brewers radar and between he and Jason Rogers may have made Hunter Morris expendable. Never a plus defender or toolsy Taylor has occasionally posted monster years at the plate including a .997 OPS in AAA as a 24 year old. That success didn't immediately translate to MLB, nor has his injury history helped him in that regard. This year's AAA campaign was bad enough he was demoted to AA in favor of Jason Rogers. Taylor only played 6 forgettable games before getting injured once again and not making an appearance the rest of the year after 7/3. "This is the not the Diaz you're looking for". Robinzon made the bigs at age 24 for Toronto and was trade to the Pirates that same season and played 41 games the following year but hasn't been back to the majors since. He didn't do much in a short stint with the Sounds and was ultimately bounced down to Huntsville where he finished the season. 23. The freaking Cubs have Mike Olt, yes that Mike Olt, playing against the T-Rats in this play-off series on a rehab assignment, that's just garbage. Predictably he hit a 3 run HR against the T-Rats last inning.
  24. Hitting is like pitching, if you become predictable, they you become easy to game plan against. I'm all for swinging at the first pitch if it's "your" pitch because I hate when a hitter arbitrarily takes a FB thigh high down the middle and then swings at crap. I'd rather the hitter take cuts at the best hitter's pitch he's going to see during an AB. However swinging at the first pitch, just to swing at the first pitch, is dumb.
  25. Jimmy Nelson is a 2014 Minor League All-Star for Baseball America.
