Sounds Fall To Chasers, 4-1 Nashville Sounds http://www.milb.com/assets/images/5/5/0/76118550/cuts/Sean_Halton_slides_2B_611_opponent_5_Large_i84d3483_opudw55o.JPG (MIKE STRASINGER ) NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Nashville Sounds managed only one run, striking out 13 times, in Tuesday morning's 4-1 loss to the Omaha Storm Chasers before a season-high Greer Stadium crowd of 9,889 fans on Education Day. Outfielder Sean Halton helped the Sounds out to a 1-0 lead in the team's final pre-noon start of the season by ripping a single into left field to score Irving Falu in the first inning. The Storm Chasers answered in the top of the second with a run courtesy of Melky Mesa's RBI-single, and took the lead in the fourth on Matt Fields' two-out RBI-double off of Sounds starter Ariel Pena (2-4). Pena celebrated his 25th birthday with a quality start, limiting Omaha to two runs on four hits over six innings of work. The right-handed Dominican took the loss, however, exiting the game after the sixth trailing 2-1. He fanned six batters and walked four. Reliever Kyle Heckathorn worked a 1-2-3 seventh inning, but surrendered a two-run home run to Omaha's designated hitter Carlos Peguero in the eighth, which gave the visitors the 4-1 advantage. Nashville received a two-hit performance from Eugenio Velez, while infielder Taylor Green extended his hit streak to a season-best five games with a single in the seventh inning. He holds the team's longest active hit streak. Omaha starter John Lamb (2-5) collected the win, his second, fanning seven Sounds batters and holding Nashville to one run on six hits through 5 1/3 innings. Spencer Patton got the save, his seventh. The Sounds will host a doubleheader with the Omaha Storm Chasers (AAA-Royals) on Wednesday at Greer Stadium. RHP Mike Fiers (6-1, 2.01) takes the start in the opener opposite RHP Sugar Ray Marimon (3-2, 2.41), while RHP Michael Blazek (0-2, 5.40) will start in the nightcap against Omaha lefty Ryan Verdugo (NR). Broadcaster Jeff Hem has the call on 102.5 The Game. Nashville Boxscore Can the Ariel Pena who started the season please come back? 16 strike outs against 3 walks in those first 2 starts... ohh what could be. I'm ready to cut ties with Kyle Heckathorn, he's not as bad as he's pitched this season but the problem is he's just not that good either. Eric Marzec went scoreless in his 2nd AAA outing, hopefully he sticks longer than last time. A pretty lackluster game from the offense even though they scattered 8 hits. Kane County earns split with 1-0 win over Rattlers Cougars outduel Wisconsin in game two By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Kane County Cougars split Tuesday's doubleheader with the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium with a 1-0 victory in game two. Ben Carhart drove in the only run of the game with a two-out RBI single in the top of the ninth. The game belonged to the pitchers, especially the starters. Barrett Astin made the start for Wisconsin and allowed two hits while striking out seven and walking none over seven shutout innings. Justin Amlung gave up three hits and struck out five without walking a batter as he match Astin with seven scoreless frames. Wisconsin (21-23) got a first inning single from Angel Ortega in the bottom of the first and he stole second with two outs. But, was left stranded by Amlung. Ortega was the only Timber Rattler to reach second base in the game. The other hits for Wisconsin were a one out single by Taylor Brennan in the fifth and a two out single by Johnny Davis in the sixth. Brennan was wiped out on a 6-4-3 double play. Davis was picked off in a rundown. Kane County (29-16) got their first hit in the third inning on a leadoff single by Cael Brockmeyer, but he was erased on a force play. Astin matched his longest outing and the most strikeouts in a single game as a professional with his performance on Tuesday. The bullpens took over in the eighth inning. Mark Williams put a zero on the board in the top of the eighth and James Pugliese tossed a perfect bottom of the eighth. Williams appeared headed for another scoreless inning in the ninth when he retired the first two batters. But, he walked Carlos Penalver on four straight pitches. Penalver stole second to get into scoring position on the first pitch to Carhart. Williams got ahead of Carhart 0-2. Carhart fouled off one two-strike pitch, took another, and fouled off one more pitch. Then, he sent a broken-bat liner to center and Penalver scored the run to put the Cougars up 1-0. Pugliese set Wisconsin down in order in the bottom of the ninth. Wisconsin was shutout for the first time this season in the second game of the doubleheader - their 44th game of the 2014 season. The nightcap of the twinbill was the fourth extra inning game in the last five games for the Timber Rattlers. Wisconsin is 1-3 in those last four games that have gone past regulation. The final game of the series is set for Wednesday night. Victor Diaz (1-1, 3.77) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Duane Underwood (0-1, 2.92) is set to start for the Cougars. Game time is 6:35pm. A player magnet featuring Timber Rattlers pitcher Taylor Williams will be given to the first 500 fans to attend this game. This is magnet number one in a series of four that will be given away during the 2014 season from Lamers Bus Lines. Enjoy Cher-Make hotdogs, Pepsi products, and Miller beer for $1 on a WIXX Bang for Your Buck Night on Wednesday, too. If you can't make it out to the ballpark, there are many ways to catch the action. MyNEW 32's Sports Showdown is set to televise the game beginning with their pregame show at 6:00pm. The radio broadcast may be heard on AM1280 or IHeartRadio starting with the pregame show at 6:15pm. MiLB.TV subscribers may tune in on the internet. WP: James Pugliese (2-0) LP: Mark Williams (0-2) TIME: 2:01 ATTN: 3,517 Wisconsin Game 2 Boxscore A sweep would have made my day but it wasn't in the cards this afternoon. Regardless it was quite the pitching affair in game 2 but thumbs down to the bats for going silent and wasting such a nice effort. Wisconsin Game 2 Recap Wisconsin Game 2 Gameday

Rattlers take game one from Kane County Wisconsin beats Cougars 11-1 By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers GRAND CHUTE, WI - Clint Coulter drove in four runs and Andy Moye made a solid start for the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers in game one of a doubleheader against the Kane County Cougars on Tuesday afternoon at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium. The Rattlers defeated Kane County 11-1. Chris McFarland and Coulter gave the Timber Rattlers an early lead. McFarland singled with one out. Coulter doubled to left on the next pitch and McFarland scored all the way from first for a 1-0 advantage. Coulter made it 3-0 in the bottom of the second inning with a two-out, two-run double. Kane County (28-16) got to Timber Rattlers Moye for a run in the top of the third. Ben Carhart singled and Will Remillard doubled to put runners on second and third with no outs. Jacob Rogers grounded out with one away to score Carhart from third, but that was it for the Cougars in the fourth. The Timber Rattlers (21-22) responded in a big way in the bottom of the fourth. Wisconsin scored five runs on five hits as they sent nine men to the plate to take an 8-1 lead. Johnny Davis started the inning with a one out single. McFarland tripled to right to drive in Davis. Coulter picked up his fourth RBI of the game when he singled through the drawn-in infield to send McFarland home. Jose Pena drew a walk and Michael Ratterree doubled down the line in left to get both Coulter and Pena home. Taylor Brennan capped the inning with an RBI single to center that scored Ratterree. Moye allowed a run on seven hits with four strikeouts and no walks in 5-1/3 innings. The Rattlers put the game away in the bottom of the sixth. Coulter drew a leadoff walk and Pena followed with a single. Ratterree doubled and Coulter scored. A wild pitch with Brennan at the plate let Pena score. Brennan finished off the scoring in game one with a single to drive in Ratterree. WP: Andy Moye (1-0) LP: Juan Paniagua (0-3) TIME: 2:22 Wisconsin Game 1 Boxscore Quite the offensive explosion in game 1 and welcome back Andy Moye. Chris Razo pitched well finishing the game off. Chris McFarland (2-4,2B) broke out of his slump while Clint Coulter (3-3,2 2B,BB), Jose Pena (2-2,2 BB), and Michael Ratterree (2-4, 2 2B) contributed multi-hit games of their own. Just a note that a PO is also recorded as a CS even though it was only one event. With Ben Carhart batting, Jacob Hannemann picked off and caught stealing 2nd base, catcher Clint Coulter to first baseman Rafael Neda to second baseman Christopher McFarland to pitcher Andy Moye. Regardless Coulter had his best all around game of the season. Wisconsin Game 1 Recap Wisconsin Game 1 Gameday

Mattison Belts Game-Ending HR As Sounds Walk Off Against Omaha Green Drives In Three Runs For First-Place Nashville In 5-4 Win Nashville Sounds http://www.milb.com/assets/images/2/0/4/76067204/cuts/Green_05191_vovlaznl_2f9a7y8l.jpg (Mike Strasinger / Nashville Sounds) NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Kevin Mattison belted a one-out solo homer in the bottom of the ninth inning to power the Nashville Sounds to a walkoff 5-4 victory over the Omaha Storm Chasers on Monday evening at Greer Stadium in the opener of a four-game series. Mattison's game-ending blast, his third big fly of the year, came against Ramon Troncoso and gave the first-place Sounds (24-20) their second last at-bat win of the year. By opening the game with a pair of scoreless frames, Brad Mills extended his scoreless streak to 18 1/3 innings, surpassing Brian Meadows (18.0 IP in 2003) for the longest such streak during the Sounds' PCL era (1998-present). Omaha put an end to that streak in the third, however, by plating three runs to grab a 3-0 lead. Left fielder Melky Mesa (2-for-3) led off the inning with a line drive solo homer to left, his third of the year, to put the visitors on the board. Brett Eibner followed by drawing a walk from Mills, was sacrificed to second, and scored to double the Omaha lead to 2-0 on newly-crowned PCL Batter of the Week Jimmy Paredes' RBI single to center. Later in the frame, Paulo Orlando singled to center with two outs to bring home Paredes. The Sounds jumped onto the board in the bottom of the fourth against P.J. Walters. Hunter Morris singled with one out, moved to second on a Jeremy Hermida walk, and scored on Taylor Green's two-out single to center. Nashville pulled into the lead with a three-run outburst in the sixth. Caleb Gindl drew a leadoff walk and hustled to third on Morris' single to right before scoring on a Walters wild pitch to make it a 3-2 contest. After Justin Marks took over on the Omaha hill, Matt Pagnozzi bunted the runners into scoring position before Green (2-for-4) delivered again for the Sounds, slapping an opposite-field, two-run double to left to give the home team a 4-3 advantage. Omaha quickly tied it at 4-4 in the next half-inning as Mesa belted his second homer of the night, a two-out roundtripper to right that chased Mills from the contest. Jeremy Jeffress (1-1), who followed Mills with 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief, picked up his first win of the year as the beneficiary of Mattison's heroics. The teams continue the series with an 11:05 a.m. matinee on Tuesday morning. Right-hander Ariel Pena (2-3, 4.67) will make the start for the Sounds and face Omaha southpaw John Lamb (1-5, 4.97). Nashville Boxscore Part of me wishes this veteraness thing wasn't working out so well in both AAA and AA, but any walk off win is fun. Brad Mills came back down to earth a little bit but Jeremy Jeffress continued his recent nice stretch going scoreless for the 3rd successive outing. Jeremy's peripherals are not awe inspiring but he's been effective and only allowed 2 baserunners tonight. Hunter Morris (2-4), Taylor Green (2-4,2B), and Hector Gomez (2-4) had the multi-hit games for the sounds. Morris still only has 8 walks on the season against 36 strike outs in 147 (I think) ABs so far. Until Hunter learns to be more selective and force pitchers to consistently throw him strikes he's just not going to see pitches to hit in MLB even though he's adjusted enough to carry a decent AAA line. I finally got to see Wang pitch, his problems are all in his delivery, the rest of the tools are there. You just aren't able to fall behind MLB hitters and constantly be in predictable FB counts, the ATL hitters were sitting on and crushing FBs in those counts. It's a tough lesson to be taught in MLB, he wouldn't have seen that sort of thing for the most part until AA, his 93 MPH FB would have blown by most A ball hitters. If he could locate effectively he could be a decent MLB pitcher now but he doesn't and he didn't seem to be filled with a ton of confidence either as he wasn't letting those 90 MPH FBs go. I like the raw stuff, it just needs a ton of seasoning at this point.

Manatees' Magnifico magnificent on mound Brewers right-hander records first career complete game, shutout http://www.milb.com/assets/images/6/5/6/76026656/cuts/Magnifico_omuov0ew_lvjz63bg.jpg Damien Magnifico had not pitched more than six innings in a start this season before Monday. (Mark LoMoglio/MiLB.com) If you looked at the first few columns of Damien Magnifico's pitching line from May 13 for Class A Advanced Brevard County against Fort Myers, you'd think it was a decent start. He allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits in 5 1/3 innings. Then, you'd get to the walks. There were six of them, and that's where even Magnifico's analysis of his own outing went south. "Sometimes you just suck..." he tweeted afterwards. "Last time out, I got too ahead of myself," he said. "I was struggling to get anything into the zone, so I tried to slow it down a bit and focus on what's ahead of me a little more." The difference seemed to work wonders in his next outing on Monday. The 22-year-old right-hander scattered two hits and only walked one while pitching all nine innings in Brevard County's 1-0 win over Jupiter. It was the first shutout as well as the first complete game of his three-season Minor League career, which had spanned 38 appearances entering Monday's matinee. Thanks to his improved focus and control, Magnifico didn't allow more than one Hammerhead to reach base in any of his nine innings. A Viosergy Rosa single in the second, a Blake Barber walk in the third and an Austin Barnes single in the seventh were his only personal blemishes in the gem. (Barber also reached on an error by Manatees shortstop Yadiel Rivera in the sixth). "I was working with a fastball, slider and changeup," he said. "All three were pretty solid, but the changeup was pretty tough at first. It probably didn't really come around until the third. The slider was really good, though, from the beginning." With that three-pitch mix, Magnifico was able to keep Jupiter on the ground for most of the gem, recording 15 groundouts compared to four flyouts, five strikeouts, two pop outs and a lineout. "That came from the slider some, but we were focusing a lot on getting fastballs in," he said. "They just got on top of a lot of them, and that's what caused so many to get on the ground." Following the gem, the Brewers' 2012 fifth-round pick is 3-3 with a 2.37 ERA, a 1.14 WHIP and .215 batting average against through nine starts (49 1/3 innings). He has yet to give up a homer in that span. Those numbers resemble a different story than the one told by his first trip to the Florida State League late last season. After going 5-1 with a 3.83 ERA at Class A Wisconsin, Magnifico moved to Brevard County in late June but could never get his bearings at the new level. He gave up a combined 10 earned runs in his first three starts (12 2/3 innings), and a blister on his finger kept him from lasting longer than three innings in any start the rest of the way. He finished 0-2 with a 6.08 ERA in 10 FSL starts (26 2/3 innings). Now healthy, the right-hander hopes the longest outing of his career is a sign that last season -- and his previous start -- are both behind him for good. "Last year, I came here and felt like I had to prove something and forced it a little bit," he said. "After a couple of starts, the coaches came to me and told me to just trust my stuff more. Then, I had the blister, but that was something I carried into instructs and this season. "Now, it's just about keeping that focus, letting my arm travel more instead of forcing it. Those are things that seem to be working well." Reigning FSL Pitcher of the Week Scott Lyman (3-3) suffered the loss for Jupiter despite giving up only one unearned run on eight hits and a walk while striking out six in six innings. Left fielder Victor Roache, who finished 2-for-4, plated Tyrone Taylor with a single off Lyman in the sixth inning to give the Manatees the only run of the game.

That's a pretty short list considering the dearth of 1B prospects around baseball. Here's the BA list of the top 3B coming into the season. If you can find a player in there who is legitimately being by blocked for 2015 by someone in the majors there's your guy. There are some nice prospects in that list, but very few who will be ready for opening day 2015... Kris Bryant (Mike Olt), Maikel Franco (Cody Asche), Matt Davidson (Conor Gillaspie), and Garin Cecchini (Will Middlebrooks), I browsed the list again and unless Mike Olt can figure out how to hit again (besides HRs), there's not really any prospect on that list who's being blocked by a player at the major league level for 2015 worth taking a risk on who would be tradeable. Would we really want someone like Cody Asche from the Phillies? He's a capable defender but not really a power guy... he's certainly better than nothing and the team could control him for a while until something better came along. However his availability would depend on Maikel Franco getting going who's been horrible to start the year in AAA. The White Sox have Davidson, Gillaspie, and Marcus Semien capable of playing 3B, Semien has split his time between 3B and 2B for the Sox this year, but he's not really a power guy either. I don't see any option that I really like. Edit. I should add that Davidson hasn't been good to start the year either and isn't really forcing his way to Chicago. -

Sounds Win Sunday Pitchers' Duel, 2-1 Nashville's Nelson Collects 5th Win and 9th Quality Start Nashville Sounds http://www.milb.com/assets/images/9/7/8/75952978/cuts/Jimmy_Nelson_416_57_Large_dpudee05_sluxs7x2.jpg (MIKE STRASINGER ) NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Nashville Sounds outdueled the visiting Oklahoma City RedHawks by a narrow 2-1 margin in Sunday afternoon's series finale at Greer Stadium. Starting pitcher Jimmy Nelson (5-1) guided the Sounds defensively, recording his ninth consecutive quality start by holding the 'Hawks to one run on four hits over seven innings of work. The Brewers top prospect fanned five Oklahoma batters en route to his fifth victory of the season before reliever Brent Leach took over in the eighth. The Sounds offense was held hitless through the first four innings, but picked up three base knocks in the fifth inning to break out of a scoreless tie with a pair of runs. Outfielder Jeremy Hermida cracked a broken bat infield single to start the action for Nashville and came around to score on Taylor Green's double to the right-field corner. Green advanced to third on the throw to home plate and was driven home on Kevin Mattison's single into shallow right field. Pete Orr recorded Nashville's fourth and final hit in the eighth inning; both teams finished with four hits. Closer Donovan Hand logged 1 1/3 scoreless innings to notch his eighth save of the season, one shy of the PCL lead. Adron Chambers plated the RedHawks only run of the game, scoring on a groundout after leading off the sixth inning with a single up the middle. RedHawks starting pitcher and the Astros number four-rated prospect Mike Foltynewicz (3-3) took the loss, allowing two runs on three hits in six innings. The Sounds will begin a fresh four-game set against the Omaha Storm Chasers (AAA-Royals) on Monday night at Greer Stadium with LHP Brad Mills (3-0, 1.45) getting the start for Nashville opposite Omaha's RHP P.J. Walters (0-4, 9.10). Broadcaster Jeff Hem has the call on 102.5 The Game. Nashville Boxscore Well the pitching match-up certainly lived up to it's billing in this one. Jimmy Nelson's full final line 7 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 WP, 1 HBP, and 5 SO while throwing 69 of 108 pitches (season high?) for strikes. A pretty fantastic effort. Sweet sure does play the platoon advantage, he brought in Donovan Hand to replace Brent Leach only to make switch hitter Robbie Grossman turn around and bat left handed. Donovan got him to pop up to end the 8th. Hopefully with 2 consecutive scoreless outings Hand is starting to get his mojo back. Nashville Recap Nashville Gameday

Perfect tenth gives Rattlers extra-inning win at Peoria Wisconsin scores six runs in tenth inning to beat Chiefs 7-1 By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers PEORIA, IL - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers offense was silent for most of the game on Sunday at Dozer Park. Peoria took a 1-0 lead to the ninth inning, but it was the Rattlers who would triumph in a 7-1 decision that took ten innings. Peoria (25-17) scored a run in the first inning. Jimmy Bosco doubled with one out. Juan Herrera followed with a single to drive in Bosco for a 1-0 lead. Chiefs starter Arturo Reyes took a no-hit bid into the top of the seventh. Rafael Neda broke up the no-no with a two-out double down the line in right. Chiefs reliever Brandon Lee came on to get the final out of the seventh to preserve the 1-0 lead. Wisconsin received a fine pitching performance out of starter Taylor Williams. The right-hander pitched 6-1/3 innings, struck out seven, and allowed five hits. But, the one run in the first inning had him on the hook for the loss. Michael Ratterree changed that with a long home run to left field in the top of the ninth. Ratterree, who had struck out his first three times at the plate, blasted a 1-0 pitch from Brandon Lee out of the stadium with one out to even the score 1-1. Wisconsin (20-22) had lost the last two games to the Chiefs in this series in extra innings. That streak would not reach three straight extra-innings losses. Johnny Davis started the rally with a one out walk and a steal of second. Chris McFarland was next and his grounder back to the mound should have been the second out of the inning. But, reliever Jeff Rauh saw Davis too far away from second and tried to get the lead runner. The speedy Davis eluded the rundown and dove safely back into second base to give Wisconsin two runners on base with only one out. Clint Coulter made Peoria pay. The Rattlers designated hitter sent a sinking line drive to left. Kenny Peoples-Walls made a dive for the ball and missed. The ball rolled to the wall. By the time the ball was retrieved, Davis and McFarland had scored and Coulter rumbled to third with a triple that gave Wisconsin a 3-1 lead. Jose Pena made it 4-1 as he lined a single through the drawn-in infield to get Coulter home. Later in the inning, Neda and Paul Eshleman delivered RBI singles to pad Wisconsin's lead to 6-1. The Chiefs brought position player Jake Stone on in relief of Rauh and one of his first pitches was wild to allow Neda to score from third for a 7-1 lead. Tyler Alexander, who came on in relief of Williams in the seventh inning, pitched 3-2/3 innings of perfect relief to earn his third consecutive win. Alexander struck out five, including the final batter of the game to finish with a flourish. The Timber Rattlers return home to face the Kane County Cougars on Monday night. Barrett Astin (4-2, 3.21) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Kane County will counter with Juan Paniagua (0-2, 4.50). Game time is 6:35pm. The first game of the three game series is a Qdoba Q*Monday. Purchase a lunch entrée at either Qdoba location in Appleton (3813 E. Calumet Street or 4343 W. Wisconsin Avenue) on Monday before the Rattlers host the Cougars to receive a ticket to any regular season Monday home game during 2014. If you can't make it to the ballpark, you may catch the action several ways. MyNEW 32's Sports Showdown will broadcast the game on television starting with their pregame show at 6:00pm. The radio broadcast will be available on AM1280, WNAM and IHeartRadio starting with the Miller Lite Pregame Show at 6:15pm. Subscribers to MiLB.TV may watch the game that way. HOME RUN: Michael Ratterree (7th, 0 on in 9th off Brandon Lee, 1 out) WP: Tyler Alexander (4-3) LP: Jeff Rauh (0-1) TIME: 2:51 ATTN: 4,167 Wisconsin Boxscore Finally beat the Cards! I won't lie, I was concerned for a while there, but this young Rattler got over the top and finished off an extra inning game against Peoria. I didn't tune in until the 2nd so I missed Chris' call of the first inning but Taylor Williams was solid the rest of the way, reaching the mid 90s with his FB as I mentioned earlier and scattering 3 hits before being lifted after a walk and sacrifice bunt to open the 7th. Erickson went for the lefty-lefty match-up bringing in Tyler Alexander with the runner in scoring position. Mehring said multiple times that today was the best Alexander had looked all season as he was effectively mixing his pitches and keeping the hitters off balance. For the Cards Arturo Reyes was a 40th round pick last year but he's been really solid since joining the organization. Damn those redbirds do well in the later rounds of the draft... and I was feeling really good about Taylor Brennan being a 37th round pick and performing reasonably well so far this season. Since the Rattlers only had 1 hit until the 9th Rafael Neda (2-5,2B) ended up being the only T-Rat with an multi-hit game, but that 10th inning barrage sure was fun. This is Neda's 3rd trip through the Midwest League but he's making the most of it, if Houle would have been healthy one has to wonder if he would have even gotten the chance? So Rattlers have 2 hits, a double and Ratterree just hit a HR out of the stadium to tie the game in the 9th, and now Brennan doubled as I'm typing this. So now just 3 hits in the game, but all for extra bases, and only Neda's double off Reyes.
