  1. I bet they do nothing with him. He has proven that he is a 4A player. He kills pedestrian AAA pitching, but hasn't got a chance against Major leaguers. (edit: long quote --1992)

  10. I guess the Twins organizational theory of drafting the best athlete has proven to be wrong also. A rule of thumb they have followed for two decades. Generalizations make great bumper stickers though.
  11. Don't you think it give KC and Pitt another handy excuse for not succeeding. I can see the Royals using this to point out that even the draft is rigged against them. "We follow the slot recommendations and the big market teams ignore them so we can not even compete using the draft." If they lose Moustakas they will blame the system and not the fact they refuse to spend money. The said part is that the KC fans some of the best in baseball over the years are saddled with this ownership group.
  12. Something needs to be done. The Tigers are making a joke out of the slotting recommendations and also making it more difficult for other teams to hold the line with other picks.
  13. Coach32sm thank you. Hopefully some will allow facts to get in the way of their opinion. However, I doubt it. I am looking forward to seeing Angel in the big leagues. It is a shame that a young player has to lose 50 games because of ignorance, public relations and media driven paranoia. This is the 21st century and some folks want to pretend we are in the 19th. Pharmaceuticals are a huge part of our lives and will become a larger one. In most instances they have allowed us to live longer and enjoy a quality of life that folks even 20 years ago could never dream of. Everything is harmful if you abuse it or use it inappropriately. McDonald's Quarter pounders have done much more damage to teenagers than steroids or HGH.
  14. Ned had little choice with Weeks. However there is no difference between the horrendously slumping Weeks and Graffy & Counsell this year. Weeks OPS = 0.710. Graffy OPS = 0.722 & Counsell = 0.674. Weeks right now is hitting like our 3B platoon was for weeks on end. Weeks has picked the wrong time to go into a slump. If he would have done this in April, even though the games count the same amount, Ned probably would have given him more rope. Weeks works hard and he and Skaalen will figure it out in the batting cage in a couple weeks.
  15. The reason MLB warned them is because it is the type of pointless cheating that professional athletes do all the time. At the time of this incident I was having lunch with a collegue who couldn't understand all the fuss. He was a physicist and this pretty much summerized what he said at dinner that night. Including the effect of filling the bats with a viscous fluid like mercury or corn syrup (was his example). Some basic physics arguments WHen he was done explaining it to me my only reaction was how silly baseball players can be at times.
  16. You are not going to get a LH reliever for a "low level" OF. LH relievers maybe the most difficult and most overvalued players in baseball.
  17. Of our 3 spare OFs Mench is the only one who hits from the right side of the plate. At some point a decision has to be made on whether we keep Gwynn or Gross. Mench really cannot be moved unless you get a right handed bat back some how. Something tells me no one is going tog ive you a better hitter than Mench in a trade involving Mench.
  18. We knew that Estrada was a defensive liability behind the plate when we got him. The trade off was that he is a 0.300 hitter and switch-hitter. I thought we were getting a poor man's Ted Simmons. But I assumed he wasn't much of a defensive catcher.
  19. (1) Power bats. That appears to be the only tool that mattered to the Brewers. The system does have a number of toolsy speedy types but few power hitters. This draft is filled with big guys who the Brewers hope will hit some homeruns. That explains LaPorta also. They could care less if he will ever have a position if he hits HRs they will deal with it when the time comes. (2) There are a lot of projectable arms, those pesky HS pitchers. (3) There was a premium on LHP this year. (4) I like both catchers taken early and the one taken in the 40s of the draft. (5) The middle infielders all appear to be heavy on glove work but offensively limited. Again a bit of a shift from the projectable bats they lean toward. I am not convinced Brewer is going to be moved off SS soon.
  20. They picked up something. They were hitting good pitches. Low and outside slider right on the corner and some pretty good FBs in hard to handle spots. I admit I was watching on a TV so maybe Codero was throwing it down the middle but it looked like he putting the ball in good spots and they were hitting it.
  21. "Good pitching staff"? The lowest ERA among their starters was 6.35 before the series began. The "good pitcher" we faced tonight has an ERA of 6.35 and Whip of 1.67. The Detroit Tigers spent 3 days hitting this staff like it was batting practice in the pitchers park. Right now the Brewers are one of the worse offensive teams in baseball.
  22. Watched it on TiVo so had some idea about what had already occured when I sat down and watched it. However despite that, I enjoyed Gammons and to my surprise Phillips analysis, but overall thought the whole thing looked kind second rate. I mean it looked like the proceedings were taking place in an airplane hanger or warehouse. Next have it in a ballroom that has a little more class. I mean when you do these things you are representing the entire sport and your league. Does MLB have to do everything on the cheap. Radio City Music Hall might have cost them a few thousand more thatn that crummy hall in Orlando but it would have come off so much better on television. One of the reason kids prefer football and the NBA is because those sports know how to promote themselves and this is the perfect example of it. If you want to make the fan base younger you have to stop talking down to them, you have to excite them and you have to wear your best suit when in public.
  23. I hope your assessment is right for the Brewers sake and ours. However I didn't read it in one place or two but from a slew of sources that this was one of the weakest years in memory (a decade at least) for position players in the college pool. Agian hope that analysis is wrong, because if it isn't folks like bklynbrewscrew's sssessment of this draft might be dead on.
  24. I hope you are right. However, I still don't understand why some of you are 100% sure LaPorta is going to be any better? The SEC is OK amateur baseball but his competetion is about to become much better. Guys with gaudy college stats fail also. However too much of the attention has been on LaPorta. I think he was taken too early by the Brewers but he is the least of my concerns with this draft. I like Lucruy also and I think the LHPs as a group look interesting. So I don't entirely agree it is a lousy draft. However up to the run up I kept reading how this was a disappointing crop of position players in the college pool and I was just a little surprised by the number of guys we took in the first 20 rounds or so from college programs. Some of the scouting report are rather discouraging so I understand bklynbrewcrew's comments. Farris for example is a pick I simply don't get at all. There were signable guys with much more upside than this guy and yes I have seen him play. Even saw him last summer on Cape Cod. The guy screams utility IF.
  25. Tonight and Sunday are very important games. I know a baseball season is very long bu the Brewers are playing the worse team in baseball this weekend with a starting pitching staff that can be best described as dreadful to apocolyptic. To lose another game to this bunch is simplpy inexcusible for a "good" team. The vet players on this time need to start pulling their own weight. Mench, Estrada, Hall, Jenkins, Counsell, Graffy and etc.... It is time you guys start to contribute more than bad at bats. The "Young" guys are doing their part. The young team excuse might actually have somer weight if it were not the vets who are stinking out the joint.
