  1. I still don't understand why he was run out of Florida like he was, but this is the job he's wanted all along. Even though it's not a surprise, it's probably a good thing they're taking care of it this quickly. Now they can start focusing on other things, like figuring out how to get some offense from that outfield (not counting Heyward) and possibly looking for Chipper Jones' replacement.
  2. Boy, Tampa's bats have been dormant through the first two games of that series. If they're going to win that series, they'll have to make history -- apparently a #1 seed has never come back from an 0-2 deficit in the LDS. Edit: Probably worth noting that the fans that did stay all the way through are class acts. Apparently they spent the top of the 9th giving Carl Crawford nothing but cheers out in the outfield, knowing it's probably the last time they seem him. Good to hear.
  3. NO-HITTER! Very cool that Brian Anderson got to call the game, too.
  4. Picking Volquez to start Game 1 might've been a shaky idea, but I don't think there's a pitcher in the entire league that Dusty Baker could've picked that would have kept them in a game against Halladay (well, other than Cliff Lee today). I was surprised with David Price's rocky start in the first game of the day, but that's why the playoffs are a crapshoot.
  5. Wakamatsu would be an interesting idea, and Melvin surely would call up Jack Z and get an honest assessment of how he handles a team. By all accounts, Wak wasn't fired for being a bad manager, he just lost a clubhouse that was already toxic due to disgruntled veterans (Griffey, Bradley, Figgins, etc.). At the very least, he wouldn't be your typical retread manager, in my opinion.
  6. Yankees over Twins in 4 Rays over Rangers in 4 Phillies over Reds in 3 Giants over Braves in 4 Yankees over Rays in 6 Giants over Phillies in 7 Yankees over Giants in 6 Phillies seem too obvious to come out of the NL, so I think they get tripped up along the way. The Giants would be nice to root for, but this is a rare year where I can get behind a majority of the teams in the race. Totally wouldn't mind if the Giants, Braves, Rays, Rangers, or Twins win it all. Should be fun.
  7. Melvin just met with the media...some of the comments, as tweeted by Tom Haudricourt:
  8. I do think Macha is better suited to a veteran team that doesn't need as much day-to-day attention or interaction, and I do agree that he was dealt a bad hand from the start. Yes, the team went to the playoffs the year before he took over, but the team he got was far from the one that won the wildcard. The fact that the JS broke the story before Melvin could tell Macha shouldn't be held against the front office, in my opinion. It was just great reporting that got the information and got the story out before Melvin could make a call. If Macha felt wronged by it, I doubt he would still be going to his meeting with Melvin today.
  9. Definitely a sad day, even if the season was ultimately disappointing. Still plenty of good memories from 2010 to look back on.
  10. Yeah, I learned the hard way last night that Dish is in the middle of a dispute with Fox Sports, and dropped them as of midnight on September 30. Stinks that I have to miss the last few games of the season, but hopefully it gets ironed out in the offseason. Apparently, if nothing gets done by November 1, Dish may also drop FOX altogether, which would mean no Packer games for Dish subscribers. There's a website out there (obviously sponsored by Fox) that allows Dish customers to voice their displeasure, if anyone's interested: http://getwhatipaidfor.com/
  11. Last year, the Brewers played division champion St. Louis in the last series of the season, and won the series (swept them, even). The Cardinals went on to get swept in the NLDS. Two years ago, the Brewers played division champion Chicago in the last series of the season, and won the series. The Cubs went on to get swept in the NLDS. Hello, division champion Cincinnati. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  12. How exactly did sweeping the NL Central champion at the end of the season last year translate into momentum this year?I'd like to think the Brewers sweeping the Cardinals at the end of last year caused their poor NLDS showing, but that's just wishful thinking on my part. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  13. Well, now we can root for a Brewers sweep. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif The game notes pdf on brewers.com says that the Brewers are 1-2-0 all-time (swept one, been swept twice) in double headers against the Mets, so a split would be a first.

  15. Yes, Yo hit the 200 K mark right before the meltdown. His location just wasn't there the entire game. It just took a turn through the lineup before the Mets finally figured it out and started hitting him hard. It ends up being a disappointing second half of the season for Yo, but I'm still impressed at how poised he seems to be at just 24 years old. His season stats end up looking awfully similar to last year, but I still think he took a couple steps forward in his development. Can't wait to see him again next year, and hopefully he'll be able to hit the 200 inning mark he's shooting for.
  16. With those two first inning K's, Yo is now just 2 away from 200 for the second straight year. If he gets there, he'll join Teddy Higuera as the only Brewers to throw two 200-K seasons, and both would have done it in back-to-back years.
  17. Bummer to see Carlos Beltran as a shell of his old self. Used to be one of the most complete players in the game, but his knees are just gone now.
  18. The originally reported total is incorrect -- the Dallas Morning News reports that the deal is actually worth $80 million a year over 20 years. Still a big chunk of change.
  19. Haudricourt says that it's something that's been bothering him all year, but you have to wonder if getting hit by that pitch had anything to do with it. He was pulled for a pinch-runner after that and has only had 1 appearance as a pinch hitter after that. Seems weird that they would have him do outfield work if the toe was indeed bothering him all year. Rough year overall for Mat, but hopefully he'll be 100% by spring.
  20. Days like today are how you start to get recognized as a classy organization that treats its players well. I thought Macha did an excellent job of giving just about everyone who may not be back next year recognition, whether it was starting Counsell, pulling Prince for a pinch runner, or pitching Hoffman in the 9th. Hell's Bells for Trevor's appearance was also a nice touch. It's been a very frustrating year, especially for the home fans that saw the team only go 40-41, but doing things like that go a long way in making everyone feel good heading into the offseason. Kudos to the organization, the fans, and the players.
  21. Even though pitch f/x velocities run about 1 mph faster than most scouts' radar guns, that's ridiculous. It almost makes you wonder how long he'll be able to throw that hard before he hurts himself, but when I saw him pitch against the Brewers his delivery didn't seem herky-jerky or anything that would lead to problems down the road. Much like Jeremy Jeffress, he just makes throwing that hard look so easy.
  22. How is Loe going to get his nightly 2 innings in if all of those guys pitch?
  23. From the leaked documents, and linked to one of many articles: "The documents show that the Rays earned $11 million in profit in 2007 and $4 million in 2008" http://floridaindependent...-fight-for-a-new-stadium According to Cot's, in 2007, their payroll was $24 million. In 2008, their payroll was $43 million. This year, their opening day payroll was nearly $73 million. If their profits were that small when the payrolls were so low, it's not a stretch for Sternberg to say that they're not going to come close to making a profit with a payroll that's $30 million higher than it was two years ago. If anything, I would think the leaked documents prove his point about this season, but I'm not an expert on financial documents.
  24. As much as I've enjoyed the Brewers helping bury the Cardinals, I'm hoping it's not too much to ask to delay loss #82 for another night or two.
  25. Thought this might be of interest -- Stuart Sternberg, the owner of the Tampa Bay Rays, was quoted today as saying that no matter what happens this October, the Rays will be reducing their payroll from a franchise-record $72 million to below $50 million next season. According to Sternberg, the Rays "can't come close" to turning a profit this year, even if they win the World Series, and he's not optimistic season ticket sales will increase as much as they did from 2008 to 2009. Apparently, they needed to double that increase in order to keep payroll at its current level. To me, this is a shame, because unlike the previous ownership of that club, he's made an effort to be competitive and keep as many guys as he can. The fanbase just isn't supporting the team. Two things about this story jump out to me -- we're lucky to be a part of a fanbase that will put 20,000-30,000 butts in the seats no matter what the team's record is, and baseball won't be in Tampa for much longer.
