  1. To be fair, $30 million is a lot to give for a guy who might not even end up being a starter. It's definitely fun watching him dial it up to 104 out of the bullpen, but the odds of him being able to do that while pitching 6 or 7 innings doesn't seem likely. He was walking 4.9 per 9 innings in Louisville. As a starter, that went up to 5.27 BB/9. I fully expect them to try him in the rotation next year, but I wouldn't be surprised to see him struggle once teams start to figure him out.
  2. Pregame graphic had "41" next to his picture. How about Narv Dog with the stick again? Got a kick out of this from Dave Cameron, Mariners/FanGraphs blogger: "If Chris Narveson was a Mariner, he would lead the team in on base percentage. Chris Narveson is a pitcher."
  3. Not sure I get why Yo was hitting for himself after throwing over 90 pitches in 5 innings. At this point, the more rest you can give him, the better.
  4. Actually a bit better than that... Baseball Reference says they're 41-38 since June 1. After May 19, the day the epic losing streak reached 9 games, the Brewers are 47-44. Just goes to show that outside of that huge slide, they've mostly performed at the level most of us expected.
  5. Haudricourt has yet to get team confirmation, but he's saying the three called up tomorrow will be Villanueva, Jeffress, and Gamel. I wonder if the current state of the bullpen means Jeffress could get more of a look out of the 'pen than originally planned. They desperately need fresh arms.
  6. Haudricourt doesn't seem to think Gamel will be the position player. THwitter: Doesn't mean Gamel won't be up eventually, but if it's about making sure Gamel gets his PT, I can live with it. It wouldn't be exciting, but TH is right about Gamel not playing anywhere if he comes up to Milwaukee right away on the 1st. Don't think it'll be Kintzler. He was named to the AFL yesterday, and while it wouldn't necessarily mean they wouldn't bring him up, I don't know if they would want him throwing so much this year.
  7. I remember Zaun being in the booth around the time he initially got hurt and thinking he was very good. Apparently he's been doing some studio work for TSN (Canadian ESPN, basically) while he's been out, too. I think he definitely has a future there if he wants it. Very insightful, articulate, and doesn't sound uncomfortable with a live mic.
  8. For those of you watching on Gameday, Homer Bailey is slower to the plate than Chris Narveson and isn't bothering to throw over on anyone. Helps that all of his pitches are either too high or too low for Hanigan to get a good throw off.
  9. Remember when we would all hold our breath when it came to Weeks turning a double play? I'll happily take the relative certainty these days. Two big double plays in the first couple innings...it doesn't look like Wolf has his best stuff going so far today, so I feel fortunate that the score is still tied. I still get the feeling this one will end up being a high-scoring game.
  10. Yeah, I understand that Sabathia is one of the most influential players in team history and that season-ending CG was huge in getting to the playoffs, but why not honor one of the players still currently on the team? The emotion on the Sabathia bobble is cool, but I think a bobble of this event from the same game would've been equally awesome, and less embarrassing: http://swamigp.files.wordpress.com/2008/09/d3d936fc-b1f2-4988-9f27-e1d5da7dc71a.jpg?w=500&h=366
  11. Actually, Manny got ejected for arguing the first pitch of a pinch-hit appearance with the bases loaded and the Dodgers trailing. Reed Johnson had to finish the AB and grounded into an inning-ending double play. Manny sure knows how to dramatically leave a town, that's for sure.
  12. Well, the Pirates had plenty to say about Miller Park after yesterday's game. Regarding Evan Meek getting hit by the Braun line drive: Guess you can't keep everyone happy, but for those wondering about other teams complaining about the daytime conditions, there you go.
  13. Call me skeptical, but I would say today's outburst had more to do with the fact that they were facing Charlie Morton than the reduced shadows. If it helps the team think they have more of a chance, though, I guess it's worth it. It'll be interesting to see what happens the rest of the season, since they only have 3 more games like this to try it.
  14. Far from it, especially when talking about second basemen. Weeks entered today with an OPS of .841, which is fourth among NL second basemen and 5th among 2B in both leagues. In the NL, Brandon Phillips is #5 at .801 and Jeff Keppinger is #6 at .743. Nice win for the Brewers today. Always nice to see a sweep, even if it is against the Pirates. Too bad this is the last we see of them this year.
  15. There's nothing wrong with giving a guy the day off when you're playing a day game the night after a 4-hour, extra inning game. Telly Hughes just said that's why Kottaras is in for Lucroy, and I wouldn't be surprised that's why Hart and Cain also have off. Every once and awhile you need to give guys time off to recharge their batteries a bit, and a Sunday home game against the Pirates is about the perfect situation to do it.
  16. Of Prince's 28 home runs this year, 8 have now come against the Pirates. The next highest total against a single team is 3 against Texas.
  17. Not really, because Duke made a mistake with a fastball in the HR at-bat, but made a good pitch with the bases loaded that caused Prince to inside-out a pitch out to left.
  18. Pretty sure Manny Parra could've done this. Or at least waited until the 6th inning to do this. Just saying.
  19. The guy who's second on the team in pitches per plate appearance can't control the count? I guess I'm confused about that one.
  20. Very much so. His foot hit first before the ball even started to disappear into the glove. No idea how they missed that call. But hey, isn't the human element great!?
  21. Not sure why they would make this move now. They just bumped Parra from the rotation the other day, and like others have said, September is just a few days away. I guess it's possible they want to bring up some guys who aren't on the 40-man and they need the room, but why not let Bush make his starts until you have to make that decision? Bush was by no means great this year, but he's still a decent enough #4/5 that I wouldn't have minded seeing brought back next season if the price was right. While something like this doesn't mean it's impossible, I would think it's a sign the club is ready to move on.
  22. Adam McCalvy with the statement Yo issued about an hour ago:
  23. According to Google Maps, there is a supermarket on the 1000 block of S Cesar Chavez Drive, "El Rey Market" -- link -- so it's still possible the initial reports of it happening at a supermarket could still be correct. Not saying that's where it happened, and I don't know Milwaukee very well, but that area doesn't look that bad. Then again, I've spent a lot of time in New York, so maybe my perspective is skewed a bit.
  24. Reports say that it happened outside a supermarket. It's not like he was out at a night club at that time, pulled a Plaxico Burress, or did anything to put himself in danger other than being at the wrong place at the wrong time. It's a scary situation, and thankfully no one was seriously harmed.
  25. It's a way to describe the position of a pitcher's arms as he approaches home plate. Here's a pretty extensive article on the Inverted W, with plenty of pictures and diagrams if you scroll down. It's somewhat of a controversial issue -- some people (like the one who wrote the linked article) think it's a huge factor in pitchers getting hurt, while others like to point out the flaws of the Inverted W argument. This is certainly disappointing considering how the Nats handled him, but I don't think there was much they could've done to prevent this, as it seems like this all happened after a single pitch. Pitchers get hurt, and luckily Strasburg is young enough that this doesn't seem like it will have a huge negative effect going forward. He'll be fine if he does get the surgery, Nats fans will just have to wait until this time next year to see him.
