  1. This is not-quite-officially Game 1 in the No More Excuses tour. Everyone they've played is great. We always see the other team's ace. Blah. Blah. Blah. Shut up and win. Please.
  2. Maybe we should have Dean Wormer hand out the grades, at least we'd get a laugh out of it. Mr Weeks. A 'D' and four 'F's. That's a .182 average. Congratulations, Weeks, you're at the top of the Brewers lineup.
  3. I think question is, where and how would all the DH talent be distributed if there were no DH rule in the AL? I have a feeling Boston would still have better players on their roster with or without the DH, simply due to revenue advantages and better management. I follow English soccer a bit, and as a Brewer fan this weekend I think I know how fans of the lowest level Premier League teams feel: once every few years, when they win promotion from the second division, teams like Derby and Reading and Hull and Watford get to play in the same league as Chelsea and Arsenal and Man U. Thanks to the antitrust exemption at least we don't have to worry about the Brewers being relegated to AAA after a bad season, though maybe the drama of a fight to stave off relegation would have provided fans with a few more meaningful games in Septembers past.
  4. Befoer the Brewers moved to the NL, I loved the AL game and *hated* the NL game. Now, though I don't hate the AL or the DH, I much prefer NL baseball. My parents have Twins season tickets so I go to a number of games there every season as well as getting down to MP, and I've found that the AL game just lacks a certain intangible flavor. It's not as simple as citing "strategy" or "tradition" or any of that: there's just something about the NL that I now prefer. I agree that the very existence of the DH is at teh root of certain fundamental differences (both subtle and gross) between the leagues, but I didn't see anything so unfair about this weekend.
  5. I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for Charter to fix you guys up with HD. If they ever get a deal done with BTN before August , I'd almost bet that the HD bandwidth is allocated there rather than FSN, and to wider-appeal channels before any sports channels. Charter has taken a beating in the sports niche, and I'm doubtful they sink any more resources into it than they have to. FSN production has certainly improved greatly in recent weeks.
  6. With Sheets and Gallardo at the top of the rotation, this was a team that you digured would probably never have any worse than a 4 game losing streak. As it now stands, one Sheets loss means thate is a pretty fair probablility that this team will be on a big losing streak, or go something like 2-8 over a given 10 game stretch. It's not even Memorial Day and I'm pretty bummed out about the prospects for the summer. Even as bad as the Brewers have been for a quarter-century that's saying something, and a combo gut punch/groin kick given the springtime expectations. Not giving up, but it's going to take something pretty special to turn this around. I guess that's the silver lining: any ultimate success from here on out will probably be pretty dramatic and provide memories for a lifetime.
  7. I'm really happy about Braun's deal. I just hope he doesn't end up being Milwaukee's Helton - a HOFer who only gets to the WS once due to a perpetually irrelevant team putting together a once-in-a-generation hot streak and benefitting from the dramatic collapses of all around them. Then again, seeing as I can remember 1982, and knowing how long ago it was, maybe just one WS for Braunie in Milwaukee is as much as I can ask for.
  8. Same record as, and more runs scored than, the New York Yankees at less than half the price!
  9. Looks like bad weather may be rolling in here. Going to the cellar and taking the Brewers with me.
  10. Weeks is really unlucky. He makes good contact and with a few breaks he could easily be hitting at least .205
  11. Woogie's sig makes me wonder if the Wisconsin Lottery could do one of their current radio promo songs about the Brewers. Comedic potential is off the charts.
  12. How much could this staff fetch on Ebay?
  13. Milwaukee Brewers, keep turnin' up the heat.
  14. I'd be a bigger fan if the suits could figure out a way to balance the schedule. That means getting rid of the every-year "natural rivalry" games, but I can live with that as many of the "natural rivalrys" are nothing of the kind. Since those games seem to be, in MLB's eyes, one of the prime reasons for even having IL play, I know it won't happen.
  15. Ten road games in the next 11 days, three in Boston, three in Pittsburgh and 4 in DC. What are reasonable expectations at this point? And, given that not every (for example) 4-6 road trip is created equal, what will make you happy? The Crew is tied with the Pirates right now at 20-21, and Pittsburgh is visiting the Cubs this weekend. Is just hoping to be ahead of the Pirates in the standings come Thursday evening enough? It's kind of sad, but at this point I think I would grudgingly accept the Brewers coming back to MP at 24-27. To a certain extent, I don't even care if they are behind Pittsburgh at that point, so long as it is due to the Pirates having a great weekend in Chicago, unlikely as that may be. (As an aside, just how many home games do the Cubs get to play?). If the Brewers come back home 25-26, I'll probably be pretty happy, no matter where the wins and losses come from, and regardless of how many losses are gut-punches. I have steeled myself to the probability that Brewer fans will just have to continue to deal with that kind of punishment, at least for a while, and maybe all season.
  16. Complain about the pitching all you want, but the offense should be ashamed to be outhit by Juan Pierre, no matter who is on the mound. Brewer hitters did little to help Parra or the pen after the early burst.
  17. This just won't be fun if the go-ahead run didn't get to the dish. If Pierre goes deep here, the police better man all the bridges in Milwaukee County.
  18. Yost was reading Ben Franklin's bit about hanging together or hanging separately before the game. It's the only explanation. This could be a watershed moment in the season.
  19. What is CV's WHIP on the season? Not doing himself any favors so far tonight. Penny is good enough anyway, but seems to be a particularly tough nut for the Brewers. Especially when guys do stupid stuff like trying to steal third on Martin.
  20. That's the kind of boringly efficient offensive output I'd like to see more of from Milwaukee. I don't need crooked numbers all the time to keep me happy.
  21. The guy who broke his leg on a foul ball like that was Jermaine Dye, when he was with the A's, right?
  22. Anyone find it odd that many on this board complain about 'Slappy' Gwynn, while at the same time complaining that too many guys are always swinging for the fences and not working the count enough? I understand that these two positions are not inherently contradictory, but the results of two of the last three innings (yeah, small sample size) provide some food for thought.
  23. The pickoff play was kind of a metaphor for the season prior to the post-Gallardo downturn. Take something good, screw it up, then somehow find a way to make things work out in the end. The difference the past ten days is that the good fortune the Brewers had in winning all those xtra inning games has worn off.
  24. No, but ask me again at the end of July.
  25. Today's boos weren't just about today. After last Sunday, Gagne was virtually guaranteed to be booed today. You can rationalize his outings all you want, but the position he's being paid $10M is probably the most result-oriented position on the team, and he's failing to get results. It may not be fair, but to an extent it is that simple, regardless of the ongoing, slower-motion failures of everyone else around him. The entire situation is a mess. I don't know what needs to be done, but I think that this situation absolutely requires a really futile and stupid gesture be done on somebody's part.
