If Counsell + Stewart, then Hardy or Hall gone?
vacin8r replied to colbyjack's topic in Transaction Rumors & Proposals
Ive tried and ive tried, i cannot come up with a brewer/red sox/angels trade with manny that works. although for you nationals fans out there, id try this one: red sox get nick johnson, chad cordero, and ervin santana nationals get casey kotchman, jeff mathis, and chone figgens angels get manny ramirez and kevin youkillis maybe some cash from the sox as well. its not perfect but i think it gets all three teams what they want. the nationals continue to rebuild and dont really need a std closer at the moment so him and johnson net them a stud super utility guy and 2 high level prospects. the sox get their closer, their 5th starter, and the bopping 1st basemen they want. the angels get manny and some depth for what has been an iffy 1st/3rd base situation. now, heres where the brewers come in. the sox still want more bullpen help and a ss(even if they sign lugo, he can play 2b as well id assume). trade turbow(who for some reason i have heard they have interest in), jenkins(same comment as turnbow), and jj hardy for coco crisp(who they have soured on as much as we have in jenkins) and jon lester. i dont know if thats enough to get them to offer up lester, but the fact hes coming off an injury that may even cause him to miss the start of the season may lower his value as hardys injury has lowered his. we can then keep hall at ss, have crisp in cf, a mench/gross platoon in left, and hart in right. plus add a potential #3 starter like we did last year with bush. the sox now play jenks in lf, pena in cf, and drew(who im assuming they will sign) in rf with an if of nick jonson, lugo at 2b, hardy at ss, and hinske at 3b. not terrible with big poppy as dh. a rotation of shilling(barring retirement), beckett, papelbon, santana, and matsuzaka and cordero leading an improved bullpen should help them as well. the only team i see really balking at this may be the angels as they would be giving up a lot for manny, but that 3-4 or either manny vlad or vlad manny would have to make them think about it. sorry for all the rambling, it was late and i was bored but i thought id give it a shot. -Don -
Brewers Working on a Deal for Shannon Stewart?
vacin8r replied to brewerfan82's topic in Transaction Rumors & Proposals
Is this all part of doug melvins new master plan of carying 75 outfielders? I figure if we could get 3 who hit well against every starting pitcher in the NL central we should have a pretty solid super platoon going. With some probably being able to hit more than one, you may even be able to cut it down to 50 or 60 outfielders. It may take some creative use of the disabled list however. on a serious note, Im not sure I want to add any outfielder who isnt at least well better than at least 4 of the ones we have, at least until we can trim the current list to no more than 5 or 6. -don -
Gillick looking to move Burrell. Brewers interested?
vacin8r replied to brewers255's topic in Transaction Rumors & Proposals
The thought Ive heard is burrell to cf(ugly thought) and possibly trading rowand and a prospect to the chisox for a starting pitcher. although I see baltimore as the eventual spot for carlos at this point anyways. -Don -
"I don't think the Angels would. Their website seems to indicate Figgins will play full time at 3rd." I cant believe they wouldnt have an infield of quinlan/kotchman, kendrick, cabrera, izturis but maybe thats just me. perhaps statements as to figgins' ownership of the 3b job is an effort to increase his trade value as many here have speculated of the hall talk. The problem may be that they dont need davis. If i were them id stand pat with the rotation they have(assuming colon's health which is never a safe assumption). it would probably take a solid middle relief type guy and a young corner outfielder(garret andersons eventual replacement) to land chone. I like him, but I wouldnt trade Hart and Cappelan for him. Now if they would take Turnbow and Mench, Ill be more than happy to at least accept the charges for the phone call to discuss it. -Don
-
I know figgins isnt the best option in center, but even after his worst season, I feel he could equal dave roberts or brady clark in offensive production, and would be cheaper. Plus if we had infield injuries we wouldnt have to move hall out of what would be declared "his spot" in LF, and you could then plug gross in at CF. Now I dont know what the angels would be looking for in a trade (doug davis may even get it done as their batting lineup appears to be pretty set), but after chones worst year, I doubt it would take too much. -Don
-
We COULD, but I dont necessarily like the idea of bush, weeks, and a high level prospect for peavy after the year peavy posted in a pitchers park like petco last year. ok i still like his numbers, just not at that price. -Don

If you ask yankee fans im sure the trade will be melky cabrera and humberto sanchez for ben sheets. all kidding aside, we need to be careful to not be on the other spectrum of this. the yankees had the oppotunity to get better last year, but chose to keep phillip hughes. They may have wisened up that having a few minor league arms around for when the 15-20million dollar train wrecks blow out their arms. I doubt the yankees will be to quick to flip sanchez to another team. In the interest of fairness however, the question is what would it take? probably something like dave bush for sanchez and a minor league hitter. I cant see the crew making this kind of deal. -Don

"We let the Dodgers know we're interested in returning " doesnt really mean much. when have you ever known boras to exclude any team(especially one with dollars to spend) from the running on any of his players. From what I have heard, I would bet Drew is not a dodger next year. -Don
-
oh yes im sure they want to sign him. but my point in the previous post was to rebute the fact that they now need to sign him. the 40mil is not non-refundable. if anything in these posting deals, i think the advantage should be to the team more than the player. the teams choices are sign him or be out nothing. the players choices are sign or go back to playing in japan for peanuts. 2 questions also came to my mind though: 1)does the posting fee count against the luxury tax in any way? 2)if not, why dont the major market teams just acquire every big name japanese player. worst case scenario perhaps they could trade the signing rights to another team for something they actually need.(i actually have no clue if these rights can be traded, im just speculating) -Don
-
the way i understand it, if the winning bid team does not sign the player they get their posting fee back. what i wonder... with a bid this high(assuming the report is true) could the sox then lowball matsuzaka not caring if they sign him or not. worst case scenario they gave a no interest 30 day 40mil loan to the lions in exchange for guaranteeing that he wont be a yankee. -Don

Hard to know for sure what all of drews motives were, but i was listening to sports radio last night and the guy said drew opted out thinking he could get equal or better money elsewhere, and that drews wife hates living in LA. so it may be more that just the lure of a bigger payday. if the brewers were to want drew id think 4 years 50mil could get it done, or maybe 3 years 40mil, either way that is a huge chunk of change for a guy who(off the top of my head) has only had 2 healthy seasons his whole career. When i want the brewers to pony up this kind of bread, is for a legit #1 starter, or a consistant 850+ops hitter who doesnt have a ton of injuries. otherwise id rather just hold on to the cash and use it to buy out the arby and early FA years of whatever young studs DO live up to the hype. -Don

The $60 million dollar challenge. Build the '07 Brewers.
vacin8r replied to fleehaw's topic in Transaction Rumors & Proposals
yes, when sheets is healthy he is a top 10 pitcher, or at least top 20. but wait, schmidt is also a top 10/20 pitcher in the league. i suppose their interchangable really, but i chose to go with the vet at the top, especially with the number of innings he throws in a year. and your right, i bonked on who to platoon where, mench hart and derosa all hit lefties better, gross hits righties better, with hart at least close. have gross/hart vs righties, mench/derosa/occasionally hart vs lefties. -don -

One last shot at this, im at least right around 60 this time: Resign: Tony Graffanino @ 2yr/$4mil Arby:Capuano $4mil Arby:Hall $4mil FA:Jason Schmidt 4 yr $52mil FA:Mark Derosa: 2yr $2mil Trade: Jenkins for whatever we can get without picking up salary. I think someone out there would take Jenkins and his salary if they didnt have to give anything up. Trade: JJ Hardy, Doug Davis, Zack Jackson, and Derrick Turnbow for Michael Young That gives us a roster and payroll of: C        Damien Miller        $3,750,000 C        Mike Rivera        $380,000 1B        Prince Fielder        $380,000 2B        Rickie Weeks        $500,000 3B        Corey Koskie        $2,000,000 SS        Michael Young        $3,500,000 IF        Tony Graffanino        $2,000,000 IF        Jeff Cirillo        $1,250,000 OF        Mark Derosa        $1,000,000 OF        Bill Hall        $4,000,000 OF        Corey Hart        $350,000 OF        Gabe Gross        $350,000 OF        Kevin Mench        $4,000,000 SP        Jason Schmidt        $13,000,000 SP        Ben Sheets        $10,000,000 SP        Chris Capuano        $4,000,000 SP        Dave Bush        $350,000 SP        Carlos Villanueva        $350,000 CP        Francisco Cordero        $5,000,000 RP        Dennis Sarfate        $350,000 RP        Matt Wise        $1,000,000 RP        Brian Shouse        $1,500,000 RP        Dana Eveland        $350,000 RP        Jose Capellan        $350,000 RP        Grant Balfour        $350,000         total payroll        $60,060,000 and a lineup of: Weeks Young Fielder Hall Koskie Mench/Derosa platoon Gross/Hart Platoon Miller Pitcher Perhaps 2 platoons in the corners isnt the best way to go, but it will keep us hitting until we can find a better solution(ie Hart becoming a legit MLB corner outfielder, some prospect steps up, a future FA signing or trade acquisition, etc) Our rotation would be awesome though with: Schmidt Sheets Cappy Bush Villanueva one of the best in baseball The bullpen isnt great, but could show some things and if the team is contending we can trade some propects(other than yo or braun) for relief help before the deadline. I think the trades will work, although in the cases of Jenks and T-Bow we may have to pay some cash out putting payroll above $60mil, but regardless, this is a contending team in my eyes. Of the multiple tries at this ive taken, i think this team is the best(as well as closest to the target payroll). get r done melvin.http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif -don -
Are we gonna make a Sexson like deal?
vacin8r replied to Weirdos19's topic in Transaction Rumors & Proposals
Well they are talking about either moving texiera or young. Obviously with prince our need for texiera is limited so we should be proactive and go after young. plus like i said before he is only signed for 1 more year. i think some pitching plus jj hardy should make the deal, although you may end up bidding against what others would offer for texiera and that could get expensive. mlbtraderumors.com seems to think the pirates could get texiera for ian snell and mike gonzalez though. maybe try jj, doug davis, zacjack, and throw in turnbow with us paying half derricks salary. who knows, i just think its probably the best fit of any allstar caliber player that may be made available as the free agent market is not very brewer friendly. -don -

vacin8r replied to Weirdos19's topic in Transaction Rumors & Proposals
Well the guys that get moved in this way are guys who will be free agents a year from now who you trade for then ink to an extension. the best FAs to be would be abreu, wells, a. jones, ichiro, and michael young. abreu wont be traded, wells wont come to milwaukee(i dont think), a. jones has been discussed here b4 and nixed, and ichiro wont be traded. that leaves michael young who is an intriguing possibility. we put jj hardy, davis or ohka, and a good pitching prospect(perhaps zacjack) and they may bite. we would just have to make sure we can work out an extension to keep him the brewer ss for years to come, and then we move billy to cf, have hart in one corner spot, we still have the mench/jenkins/who???? prob in the other corner though. -Don -

To them, trading teahan(although i think it makes more sense a year from now) is like us trading overbay last year. Its bound to happen unless he can move to the OF with shealy at 1b and gordon with his fielder like projections. I dont think however they would do it for just a couple meak prospects. they will be looking for a package similar to the overbay one. the one guy they need to trade is sweeney. way overpaid and getting a DH ahouldnt be too hard for way less cash. -Don -

Well the twins picked up the option on Hunter so their outfield is still packed. I could maybe see them trading Kubel, although if they did, it wouldnt be for an outfielder, especially an overpaid one.To be perfectly honest, looking at the twins lineup, I dont see the brewers as having anything that improves them at any position that id be overly excited about trading to them for a guy like Kubel. Now when they sour enough on him that they trade him for a mid-low level prospect, gimme the crew a call. -Don -

This isnt what Id actually do, but its fun to look at all angles: C        Damien Miller        $3,750,000 C        Mike Rivera        $380,000 1B        Prince Fielder        $380,000 2B        Rickie Weeks        $500,000 3B        Corey Koskie        $2,000,000 SS        Bill Hall         $4,000,000 IF        JJ Hardy        $380,000 IF        Jeff Cirillo         $1,250,000 OF        Kevin Mench        $4,000,000 OF        Kenny Lofton        $2,000,000 OF        Corey Hart         $350,000 OF        Gabe Gross        $350,000 OF        Gwynn/Nix         $350,000 SP        Chris Capuano        $4,000,000 SP        Dave Bush         $350,000 SP        Zach Jackson        $350,000 SP        Dana Eveland        $350,000 SP        Carlos Villanueva        $350,000 CP        Francisco Cordero        $5,000,000 RP        Dennis Sarfate        $350,000 RP        Matt Wise        $1,000,000 RP        Brian Shouse        $1,500,000 RP        Scott Proctor        $350,000 RP        Jose Capellan        $350,000 RP        Grant Balfour        $350,000         total payroll        $33,990,000 How acquired: If the Yankees want Sheeter so bad, they can trade us Proctor and Hughes for Sheets, Jenkins, and Turnbow taking on all the salaries of those guys. Sign Kenny Lofton to a 1 yr $2mil deal with a team option for 2nd year. Now I know this team looks bad, especially in the starting pitching department, but this is only part of the plan. We trade the lesser of hughes or gallardo in a package of prospects at the deadline to the cubs(who are out of it at this point) for Zambrano and call up the other of the two. We also have a contract extension already worked out for Zambrano as we do the trade. Hopefully one of zachJack, Eveland or Villanueva shows they can be a legit 5th starter giving us a rotation finishing 2007 and leading into 2008 of Zambrano, Cappy, Bush, Yo, Zac/Eve/Vil. And even if Zambrano gets 15mil per(which I think is a bit steep, 12 is more realistic, that still gives us only a 48mil payroll moving forward to sign a big bat(Andrew Jones perhaps, or maybe move hall to CF and sign Michael Young) after next season as well as lock up some of our young studs. -Don -

I just dont see TB giving up crawford for anything less than gallardo, and if its a 3 team deal, why would the chisox give up mccarthy for hall when they wouldnt give him up for soriano when they were in the middle of a playoff chase(which they lost). yes hall would be there longer then the rental of soriano, but i would think opportunities for a ring trump all. mccarthy will be in their rotation next year with one of their other starters getting dealt. -Don -

I was really bored at work but i put this together in an effort to appease everyone here(this is in absolutely no way based in reality although i tried to make trades i thought teams may accept. the brady clark one is contigent on the twins letting hunter go) here we go. the $70 million 2007 milwaukee brewers(sorry for the all caps): C        DAMIEN MILLER        3750000 C        MIKE RIVERA        400000 1B        PRINCE FIELDER        1000000 2B        RICKIE WEEKS        1000000 SS        BILL HALL        4000000 3B        MIKE LOWELL        9000000 IF        JEFF CIRILLO        850000 IF        VINNY ROTTINO        400000 LF        CARL CRAWFORD        4000000 CF        COCO CRISP        3500000 RF        COREY HART        400000 OF        GABE GROSS        800000 OF        LAYNCE NIX        400000 SP        JASON SCHMIDT        14000000 SP        BEN SHEETS        10000000 SP        CHRIS CAPUANO        4000000 SP        DAVE BUSH        1000000 SP        CARLOS VILLANUEVA        400000 RP        JESSE CRAIN        400000 RP        BRIAN SHOUSE        1000000 RP        JOSE CAPPELLAN        800000 RP        MATT WISE        1000000 RP        RAFAEL BETANCOURT        500000 RP        RICK HELLING        850000 CP        FRANCISCO CORDERO        6000000         TOTAL TEAM SALARY:        69450000 Trades include: TRADED GEOFF JENKINS AND JJ HARDY FOR COCO CRISP AND MIKE LOWELL TRADED YO GALLARDO, ZACH JACKSON, AND MIKE JONES FOR CARL CRAWFORD TRADED BRADY CLARK AND COREY KOSKIE FOR JESSE CRAIN TRADED DERRICK TURNOW AND KEVIN MENCH FOR RAFAEL BETANCOURT Signings include: SIGNED TO A 4 YEAR $52 MIL CONTRACT 1ST-14 2ND-13 3RD-13 4TH-12 I know no one wants to trade Yo, but sometimes you have to give up quality to get Quality.
